From the Zone III Chairman: The GCA Annual Meeting comes to Zone III in 2015

Zone III will be hosting the GCA Annual Meeting in May 2015. That may seem a long way off, but the planning has already begun. We are thrilled to announce that it will be held in Rochester, NY. The Co-Chairs are Margy Richardson, Rochester GC, Ruby Morse, Allyns Creek GC, Marilyn Donahue, LGC of Rye, and the Vice Chairman is Angel Morris, Rye GC. Zone III hosts this prestigious meeting every 12 years, as there are 12 Zones in GCA, and we all take our turn. We last hosted the meeting in 2003 in Rye, NY. Before that, it was held in NYC in 1991 and in Rochester in 1979. Believe it or not, there are members of our fabulous Steering Committee who attended the Rochester meeting, and we are all thrilled it will be there again. The venue has been booked, and we are in the process of getting committees put together. Many of you have let me know what committees you feel you or your club would be best suited to help with. Thank you! If you have not yet had a chance to let me know, please do so as soon as possible. Marilyn Donahue Zone III Chairman

Communications Committee

I was so happy to have had the opportunity to attend the GCA Annual Meeting in Indianapolis last month. If you are ever invited to one, please say “yes” and go — you will be both inspired and impressed by the incredible accomplishments of other GCA clubs, the national com-mittees and the GCA medalists and honorees. National Communications Committee (ComCom) Chairman, Crissy Cherry awarded the GCA PR Award to Stony Brook Garden Club , Zone IV, for their “Going Green” conservation booklet (this is the same award that we were all so proud to have Bedford win last year). As you know, this will be the last national PR award as we have replaced it with a zone communications award—stay tuned for some exciting news on that score!

I have enjoyed my two years as your PR/Communi- cations Rep immensely and have learned much about the GCA national organization and our own Zone III clubs. I’ve also acquired a whole range of new skills in my efforts to enhance the effectiveness of our communi-cations. It has been a challenge for me to keep up with the fast moving pace of technology and change that characterizes today’s communications environment. But the effort has most definitely been worth it!

Colleen Fogarty, from the GC of Orange and Dutchess Counties, will be taking over my responsibilities for the zone. I know she will enjoy her job as much as I have and you all will enjoy working with her as well. I will be staying on the ComCom as Vice Chairman of Web documents so will continue to be in touch with many of you. All the best for a sunny summer and hope to see many of you at Millbrook’s zone meeting later this month. Cindy Willis Zone III Communications Rep

A description of the Zone Communications Award may be found on page 15 of the GCA Awards Manual.

Bulletin Committee

It is hard to believe that two years have passed since I assumed my duties as your Bulletin Representative. Throughout the past two years, I have had the opportu-nity to work with a terrific group of ladies from all twelve zones and to learn what goes into producing our won-derful GCA Bulletin. I certainly have gained an appre-ciation for the skills and organization required to provide our members with this incredible publication.

During this time, the Bulletin Committee has faced many challenges on the national level. With the resignation of Sally Squire and the sudden closing of our trusted print-ing firm, our path was a little rocky at times. The dedica-tion and determination of Jennie Reynolds, Sally Barnett and Brenda Smith led us through these uncertain times with confidence and grace. I am so proud to have been a part of such a strong and resilient group of ladies. Now, with the introduction of the new Communications Committee and the appointment of our new editor, Beth Bostian, the Bulletin Committee can look forward to even more exciting challenges.

On the Zone level, I have only great things to report. The clubs of Zone III are simply fantastic. They are very active and more than willing to share their experiences and accomplishments. Over the past two years, I have submitted 28 articles from Zone III and 10 from GCA Committees. Of that number, 35 have appeared in the GCA Bulletin. Leaving only 3 articles for me to hand over to your new Zone III Bulletin Representative, Suz-anne Kingsley. Suzanne will be a terrific Bulletin Repre-sentative. She is very efficient, extremely competent and you will have great fun working with her.

In closing, I would like to express my appreciation to all of you for giving me this wonderful opportunity to serve as your Bulletin Representative. It has been a joy and pleasure working with all of you and I want to thank you again for your support and cooperation. Carolyn Fadden Zone III Bulletin Rep

We are extremely fortunate to have these outstanding individuals and Marin GC as members of GCA. You can re-read more about them in the February newsletter. It has been a joy for me to serve on this committee and I will miss it. Libby Smith, North Suffolk GC, will be our new representative, and she is looking forward to July 1

st when her term

begins. Thank you Zone III for being the BEST!! Margy Richardson Zone III Admissions Rep

Garden History and Design

The Garden History and Design Committee has had a busy spring. In March the Committee went to California where we learned about many new things on the horizon for GH&D. Stay tuned! In April many of you came to our GH&D Meeting at Headquarters in NYC. Our speaker was Lorella Brocklesby who showed us the influence of the English gardens, both past and present on our American gardens. After her lecture many people wanted to hop on a plane to England to see all the amazing gardens that she showed us. After lunch we had a workshop using the CD created by the Archives of American Gardens at the Smithsonian entitled “A History of the GCA Collection: Creating a Garden Legacy: Sirius: In Search of a Garden: Working Toward a More Perfect Archive. This is a wonderful learning tool for your clubs at a GH&D meeting. Many ladies requested a copy of the CD at the end of the meeting. In closing I am sadly leaving this great committee at the end of June. I can’t thank you enough for all your support during my two year term. I leave you know-ing as I said earlier there are many new and exciting things to come for GH&D. So keep on documenting, or if you have-n’t so far, give it a try! It’s fun and truly rewarding and so important. Anne T. Unger Zone III Garden History & Design Rep

Horticulture Committee

Coming soon: The Plant Exchange at the zone meeting. This year’s theme is the genus Spiraea. Results will be published in the next Zone Newsletter. In 2012, we will celebrate Viburnums.

Update from the Horticulture Committee: In consideration for the environment, when exhibiting stems in a flower show “plastic wrap for wedging is discour-aged.”

Summer Reading: The Brother Gardeners & The Founding Gardeners, by Andrea Wulf, and Prodigal Summer, a perennial favorite, by Barbara Kingsolver

Save the Date! Saturday, November 5th

: The seven Long Island clubs & the New York Committee co-venture with the New York Botanical Garden for a Tree Symposium and box lunch celebration of the mid-point of the GCA Cen-tennial Tree Program. The event features such speakers as Eric Sanderson, author of Mannahatta, a Natural Hstory of New York, forest tours and the planting of a the newest American chestnut hybrid. All GCA members, family and friends are welcome. Chris Murray Zone III Horticulture Rep

Flower Show Committee

In the two year period from Spring of 2009 until now, 20 of the 22 garden clubs in Zone III have had at least one club or GCA Flower Show and some have had 2 or 3 shows. September and June are notoriously busy months in Zone III for our shows, keeping judges and exhibitors running from north to south and places in between. The outlook for September 2011 has three GCA shows on the calendar again this year, a harbinger of things to come!

In the last two years we have reviewed all the bases of flower shows from new design styles, to horticulture

grooming and nomenclature, photography guidelines, bo-tanical jewelry, conservation and education exhibits, schedule writing and successful public relations for our shows with two meetings at HQs and information in the newsletter The Show Must Go On.

It has been a delight to serve as your FSC Rep and share in the joyful enthusiasm Zone III exudes for Flower Shows. Laura Haley Zone III Flower Show Rep

Judging Committee

At the recent Judging Committee meetings in Pasadena last month, the Judges Selection Committee advanced Cathy Westerfeld, of Allyns Creek GC, to Approved Flower Arrangement Judge. At the same time, Phyllis Heerwagen, Fort Orange GC was accepted into the Judging Program as a Candidate in Flower Arrangement. Congratulations to Cathy and Phyllis. The ZIII Judging Roster will be richer for having them. Susan Detjens Zone III Judging Rep

Looking for a low cost no cost program for next year? Have your president and or delegate take photos of all of the flower arrangements at the upcoming zone meet-ing flower show. Try not to include the entry cards in your photos but do take down judges comments and note how the arrangements placed in their classes. When you are back home arrange the photos into a slideshow have your members guess how the arrange-ments in each class placed and read the judges com-ments — fun and very educational.

A New York State of Mind, a Challenge Class Photography and Flower Arrangements for 2013

2013 is right around the corner, and so is the momentous occasion of GCA’s 100th anniversary.

Zone V is hosting this special 2013 Annual Meeting and planning has been underway for some time. In addition to a GCA Flower Show, there will be a special division Challenge Class. Each Zone is to submit one blue ribbon winning photograph (photo must reflect the original mission statement of GCA and be indicative of our zone) which will then be interpreted by a flower arranger. The photo and arrangement will be judged separately. To adequately produce a photograph to the specific guidelines necessary, Zone III is holding a Photography Show at the President’s Council Meeting on November 17 at GCA Headquarters. The schedule and information (suggested 12 megapixels and portrait orientation) will be sent directly to each club President and Flower Show Chairman in Zone III very soon. Entries are due by 11/1/11 and all clubs are expected to submit at least one photograph. Please register by 9/15/11 with Cathy Westerfeld at [email protected].

New York Committee

The New York Committee has three new unique projects in the beginning phase. The First is plan-ning and installation of a serenity garden on the 6

th floor terrace ad-

joining the patient recreation area at Memorial Sloan Kettering can-

cer center in New York City. Our hope is to provide a gar-den oasis that promotes a healing atmosphere for body, mind and spirit.

Secondly, we have been asked to assist in the replanting of the historic gardens at the Mount Vernon Hotel on East 61 Street. (former home of Abigail Adams). The Colonial Dames of America have secured all the funding for this project but need our help planting. (get your garden gloves out, please!!)

Thirdly, we are beginning an association with noted ro-sarian Stephen Scaniello, and the project he founded con-cerning historically correct heritage rose plantings in upper Manhattan. Our proposed plan is to assist in the planting

of the garth, a small garden enclo-sure within the compound of the Church of the Intersession, at 155th Street and Broadway. The garth is a microclimate of sorts as it is entirely protected creating all kinds of excit-ing growing possibilities. We would also like to begin a program there introducing local children to the wonders of gardening. As you can see we have our work cut out for us and welcome all volunteers.

A belated thanks to all who participated in the November flower arranging workshop we hosted with Tomas De Bruyne in New York City. Our heartfelt thanks to Laura Haley for all she did to bring this idea to fruition. It was an amazing success in every way and we are planning a simi-lar event for April of 2012. Have a great summer in your gardens !! Cindy Mullin New York Committee
