For beginners With so many different digital cameras to choose from, it may be difficult to decide which camera is right for you. Generally, the lowest priced cameras have the fewest fea-tures, thus making them the easiest for the be-ginner to use. Cameras with high-end features are often slightly more difficult to learn to use and will cost considerably more. Choose your camera based on what the primary use will be. If you’ll just be using it casually for travel or photographing family and friends, choose a less-expensive camera. For those looking to capture wildlife close up or take pictures at sporting events, a high-end camera will fit the bill.

E-Series The E-Series Canon camera is designed with the budding photographer in mind. The Power Shot E1 is the only camera in this se-ries. This camera is a point and shoot camera with zoom and an easy-to-use control menu. It retails for around $199 and is available in three colors: white, blue and pink.

A-SeriesThe next level of Canon cameras for begin-ning photographers is the A-Series. These cameras have a few more features than the E-Series, including a customizable menu. Popu-lar features for this camera include red-eye correction, face detection technology and a 6x optical zoom lens. This camera also offers a mini-movie mode. The price range for the cameras in this series range from $99 to $299.

ELPH SeriesThe ELPH Series Canon digital cameras are for more advanced users. They offer the same features as the A-Series cameras, plus a few more advanced features. These cameras have high-resolution megapixel CCD, ISO controls for managing low-light conditions and large LCD screens for shooting and playback. These models also have the print and share buttons which allow for direct printing and downloading of photos and mini-movies. The price range for this series is $99 to $399.

High End SeriesThe high end digital camera series from Can-on are designed for the advanced or profes-sional photographer. These cameras, such as the SX10 IS, offer a 20x optical zoom, 10-megapixel resolution with high performance face detection and red-eye correction. In ad-dition, these models have self-timers, contrast correction and longer movie modes. This cam-era can use optional filters as well, making it perfect for professional photographers to use. The cameras in this series are heavier than other Canon digital cameras, but they were designed for frequent use. The price range for this series of cameras is $240 to $500.

SLR vs. Point and Shoot For most new photographers, all they require is a point and shoot camera. These cameras require little, if any, adjustment. The image you see and the one you will have once the camera captures it will vary slightly, although not enough to be noticeable to be-ginner photographer. This is because a point and shoot camera uses two lenses. One lens is used to view the image while the other actu-ally captures the image. A SLR camera uses one lens to view and capture the image. Generally speaking, what the photographer sees is what they get. The photos taken by a SLR camera usually have better resolution as well. A SLR camera al-lows for lens changes too, such as the addition of telephoto, panorama and wide-angle lenses.

Try Before You Buy Before buying any new cameras, try them out at a local camera store or retail store that carries a variety of both point and shoot and SLR cameras. You’ll be able to examine the many features to see which one fits your indi-vidual needs and budget. ________________________________________Initial Author:Charlotte Gerber Recent Contributors: Danahinders
