The ZMCB also thanks...

The ZCMB - A Brief History

Zanesville flourished with performing arts activities in the late 1800s, and the John Bauer Band was among them. The band was organized before 1880 and averaged 15 to 20 members. When the

band leader died in 1912, his ensemble was taken over by the American Rolling Mills Company, and became known as the Armco Band.

The 7th Regiment and Armco bands held their concerts locally, in McIntire Park and Putnam Park. By 1923, the two bands had merged,

taking the present day name of Zanesville Memorial Concert Band.

Today, funds for the concerts are raised by individual and corporate contributions. An endowment fund has also been established for

anyone wishing to make a donation towards the ZMCB.

The band’s current home is Zane’s Landing Park, along the eastern banks of the Muskingum River in downtown Zanesville. Concerts are

performed on five Sunday evenings through the summer.

Concerts remain free to the public, thanks to the generosity of our supporters.

QUILTERS is the story of, Sarah, a pioneer matriarch and six women, who are called her daughters, as they face frontier life. The musical is present-ed as a series of short tales and tableaux matched with musical numbers,

each presenting an aspect of frontier life or womanhood. The patches or blocks represent “girlhood, marriage, childbirth, spinster-hood, twisters, fire, illness and death.” The various patches are ultimately

assembled into one glorious, brilliantly colorful quilt, the effect is both breathtaking and magical.

My fellow Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to

pass with success thus far. And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer:

Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our

civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity. Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their

hearts, steadfastness in their faith. They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the

enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph.

They will be sore tried, by night and by day, without rest-until the victory is won. The darkness will be rent by noise and flame. Men’s souls will be

shaken with the violences of war. For these men are lately drawn from the ways of peace. They fight not for

Mrs. Schmelzer Bock is a native of Bremen, Ohio, and received her Bachelor of Music Education and Master of the Arts degrees from Ohio State Uni-

versity. As a member of the Ohio State University Marching Band, she became the first woman to dot the “i” in the

famed “Script Ohio” marching maneuver in a single-script at a home football game in Ohio Stadium. Schmelzer Bock also has been a member of the 122nd Army Band / Army

National Guard, stationed at Beitler Armory in Worthington. When not wielding the baton in front of the ZMCB, you will

find her playing tuba for the band.

MEET OUR CONDUCTORSSunday, July 3rd, 2016 / Secrest Auditorium

Steve has been an active performer since adolescence in various capacities, from acting in dramas and musicals to

concert performances as both soloist and chorus member. Over the years Steve has performed with organizations from Meadowbrook Theatre and Meadowbrook Music Festival in

Michigan to the Oregon Bach Festival in Eugene, Oregon as well as numerous collegiate and community groups. Locally, you may

have seen and heard him in various productions at Zanesville Community Theater. He is delighted to have the opportunity to perform with this terrific organization. When he isn’t on stage

or in rehearsal, Steve works at the David Crist State Farm agency and has enjoyed his “temporary” position there for the last 10+ years. He is also currently working online toward a Bachelor’s

degree in Information Technology. None of this would be possi-ble without the exceptional support of his AMAZING wife Jolene,

and his loving daughters, Jadyn, Cadence and Alonna who play their roles as audience participants with aplomb. Steve and

Jolene celebrated 14 years of wedded bliss this Spring, and he is so grateful to her for being the real reason for anything that

could be called his success!

JEFFREY L. ROQUEMOREARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Jeff retired from Zanesville High School after serving 16 years as band director and music department coordina-tor from 1988-2004. Previously, Jeff held band director

positions at Philo High School, Hamlin (W.Va.) High School, Fort Frye High School, and, most recently, Custer County High School in Westcliffe, Colo. Jeff earned a Bachelor’s

Degree from Ohio University in 1974, a Master’s Degree in Music Education from Marshall University in 1981, and a

Master’s Degree in Public School Administration from Ohio University in 1992. He has served the Ohio Music Edu-

cation Association (OMEA) as district secretarytreasurer, president-elect, and president. Jeff was also director of the Muskingum College Spirit Band from 2004-06. He also plays

flute and piccolo for the band.
