ZIONEWS August 2017 Zion Lutheran’s Monthly Newsletter
"Wittenberg to Salzburg to Savannah: The Reformation Comes to Georgia", presented by Susan McArver of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. As we approach the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, we will take a look back at how Luther’s impact reached all the way to colonial Georgia in the story of the Salzburgers, who fled religious persecution in 1733 to settle in Rincon. The lecture will be held on August 20, 2017 from 3-5 PM at Jerusa-lem Lutheran Church, 2966 Ebenezer Road Rincon, GA 31326.
For more information, call or email Pastor Steve Plonk, 912-667-7844, [email protected]. Sponsored by the Ebenezer Conference of the Southeastern Synod.

LWR School Kit bags are ready to be filled!
Thanks to our Quilting Angels, once again, we have School Kit bags to fill with school supplies for children who otherwise would have to start school without the basics. A list of the required sup-plies as per Lutheran World Relief is in each bag. Bring your filled School Kit bag back by Sunday, August 13th to be blessed during the worship service, and we will send it on its way in the LWR truck. Somewhere in the world, a child will thank you!
Items needed to fill the School Kits: Four 70-sheet notebooks of wide - or college - ruled paper approximately 8” X 10½” (no loose-leaf paper) One 30-centimeter ruler or a ruler with centimeters on one side
and 12 inches on the other
One small pencil sharpener
One blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)
Five unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers (secure together with a rubber band)
Five black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink) (secure together with a rubber band)
One box of 16 or 24 crayons
One 2½” eraser.
Please inform Pastor Dave in writing or by phone of any 1) upcoming medical interventions in which you would desire
pastoral prayers and/or visitation, 2) changes to the prayer list, or 3) announcements for the bulletin.
Pastor Dave can be reached at his home at (912) 232-6215 or on his cell at (912) 596-5466.

It’s Almost Time to Celebrate our 145th Anniversary! Sunday, September 24th, 2017
Each September, we gather with family and friends of Zion’s congregation to celebrate the blessings God has bestowed up-on us. As is our tradition, we will begin our celebration with worship at 11:00 a.m. Our service will be a time to thank God for the many years of service that this church has provided to the community and beyond. It will be a time to pray, sing, hear God’s word and share in the Lord’s Supper. After wor-ship, we will continue the celebration in the Fellowship Hall with a buffet luncheon (provided). Please join us for a special day of remembrance as we rejoice in the past and look for-ward to an exciting grace filled future.
Get ready to serve! “God’s work. Our hands. Sunday”
September 10, 2017
On Sunday, September 10th, Zion will join nearly 10,000 congre-gations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in a spe-cial day of service. We will put our faith into action by serving and sharing God’s love. We ask those who have them to wear their official “God’s work. Our hands.” T-shirt. You can also wear your Thrivent shirt. If you need a Thrivent Shirt you can contact Emma Lee Dasher or Mary Lou Thomas. On Sunday, September 10th, everyone is asked to bring a sack lunch to eat following worship. Our Social Ministry Team is researching a really great service project, and we will let you know what they have decided in the September Zionews. Whatever we do, there will be plenty of work for all ages and abilities. Mark your calen-dars and join your ELCA family for this special day of service!

Sometimes remaining the same seems like an option, but the re-ality is that time is always moving forward. There are times in our lives when in order not to go backwards, we have to put forth extra effort to keep moving forward. Such a time is when you are trying to go upstream on the Savannah River. The flow will naturally push you back down the river when you want to go upstream. If you want to make music with a musical instru-ment, you will need to regularly practice with that instrument. If you want to live a Christian spiritual life, you will need to exer-cise your faith. Physical muscles that do not get exercised tend to weaken and that is why even senior citizens can benefit from simple and easy physical exercises to keep some tone in their muscles. Zion's spiritual fitness center is open on Sundays starting at 9:45 am with spiritual fitness classes for various ages and then group spiritual fitness gathers together at 11:00 am. Growing in the Christian faith can help you improve your daily living.

Benevolence Money Reaches Around the World
For several decades, a year long internship has been a re-quirement for those persons graduating from an ELCA semi-nary with a Masters of Divinity degree a requirement for or-dination . More recently the ELCA began the Horizon intern-ship program which connects seminary students with interna-tional internships. Dione Miller did a year long internship in Bangkok, Thailand. Her biggest takeaway? Being able to take a step back and recognize and understand my own faith while respecting and seeking to understand the faith of other people that varies and is different than mine, Miller said. The Hori-zon internship program receives some of its funding from be-nevolence money given by congregations.

Senior Citizens!
There are many, many scams out there these
days. Sergeant Ramsey Mannon from the Sher-
iff’s Department warned the 42 folks at our July meeting about the big variety of scams going on. If you receive a
suspicious phone call just hang up without giving out any
personal information. Do not use door to door contractors
who come in from out of town or out of state. They may
do a poor job, and then be gone with your money. Check
with the Sheriff’s Office if you are suspicious of folks knocking at your door.
Thank you to Charlie & Melinda Heidt and Rebecca Foote
for preparing a delicious meal. Thank you also to all who
brought food to share and/or helped clean up afterwards.
For our next meeting, Dr. Randy Shearouse, Superinten-
dent of Effingham Schools, will be updating us on the new
school year. You don’t want to miss “being in the know.” Plan to join us on Wednesday, August 23rd, starting at
11:30 a.m. and enjoying a delicious meal at noon. Come and
bring a friend with you!
