There have been ups and downs along the way; but if the forefathers of Zion UCC could have the faith to persevere and build the current building during the Great Depression, surely we can endure any problems to be faced now and in the future. What will that involve? We have a very caring Pastor who is a great preacher and teacher. He conducts meaningful Bible study classes weekly, supports youth activities, visits shut-ins and takes them communion and tries to keep in touch with all parishioners. He counsels, prays, calls, sends "care cards", makes hospital calls, etc., etc., not to mention cooking, cleaning, laundry, and all the other duties of a single parent. We have talented musicians who share their talents at the piano, the organ, in the choir and the praise band, and provide special music. We have many faithful members who serve the Lord in cleaning, maintaining the buildings and grounds, visiting the sick and shut-ins, providing food for funerals, sending cards, sharing resources with the needy, providing technical support during services, and countless other unseen ways of serving silently in the background or praying for our church family. All of these are signs that our church is growing in faith and thriving. However, our church will not thrive if we get caught up in our concerns or activities that take Christ and the church out of our Sunday or U out of our CH_RCH. Did you get upset when the committee chose the wrong napkins or tablecloths for the Mother & Daughter Affair? Did someone hurt your feelings by something they said or did? Did the church council spend money on something you questioned? Did you feel slighted if you weren't spoken to or recognized for something? Most of us can probably think of times when we have acted in an unChristlike way over something that may have been pretty trivial in the big picture.

The Test of Time - 180 Years and Counting How has Zion withstood the test of 180 years? We have taken a look back from time to time at the hearty souls who came before us, enduring many hardships in order to make the journey to the United States by ocean vessel, river boat and wagon to get to Shelby County and surrounding areas. We have to keep our eyes on the "prize" if we are to move forward. lf we have con-cerns, what should we do? TALK about them-not at the Rays Crossing or Manilla "Forums", not on the phone to another parishioner to "gripe", not behind the Pastor's or the church council's backs! Talk FIRST to the person with whom you have a concern. Kindhearted criticism is usually tolerated by most people. lf more discussion is necessary, then approach the council president or the pastor parish ministry team. Communication is the key to most misunderstandings.

It is exciting to see some new members and younger members getting involved! However, some who are more conservative or traditional in their thinking may feel uneasy with seeing things differently or changing the status quo. We need each other, evervone in our church family, and without compromising our Biblical values, we need to put petty issues aside or work toward a satisfactory resolution. Again, communicate, communicate! Regular attendance in church can make your week start off with a positive tone! Recently, a member had to miss three Sundays in a row because of surgery. She relates that this left such a void in her life, because of missing the inspiration of the service, the love and support of the church family, and just missing being in the house of God. So think about attending more regularly if U are one who is missing on occasion. The stresses of life can certainly leave you in need of a lift! Worship and Christian fellowship can brighten your day and give your strength to face the week ahead. Come and count your blessings! Children desperately need to be taught the lessons of the Bible during their formative years, so they can make good decisions when they become teenagers. Think about what is important in your child's life. Are they learning Bible truths and how they relate to our lives today? Sunday School can help your child learn how to treat other people in the way Christ taught His followers. lf you have a fire, you don't want all the firemen to be taking the day off. lf your child gets sick, you hope not all the doctors are playing golf that day. We have to make choices, but the choices about our Eternal Life should be a priority. God sent His one and only Son who paid the ultimate sacrifice to be our Savior. How can we not give back just one or two hours a week to give praise and thanks for that great sacrifice? Please pray about it! From the Pew Matron, Kathy Wright

Perhaps the greatest human question of all is the questioning of suffering: If God is good, why does He allow so much pain in the world? This is a question not often talked about in church but Acts of God addresses it head on and doesn’t offer trite an-swers. This study will offer insight and hope as Pastor Bob Russell uses the biblical story of Joseph to explore how, in the face of personal pain or the suffering of those we love, we can trust in the Lord at all times. You will not want to miss this ser-mon series during Sunday morning worship services or bible study on Wednesdays at 11:00am and 7:00pm.

180th ANNIVERSARY OF ZION UCC

You are invited to attend one more Sunday celebration of our 180th year as a church. Save the date of October 9, 2016 for an inspirational service, plus a

food and fun filled day for all. There will be an old fashioned Octoberfest pitch-in after the service with German style brats and drinks furnished. The History Ministry Team hopes that you will bring a dish from the new cookbook or the

one printed in 1976 for our 140th anniversary. The CHALLENGE is for you to use a recipe that YOU did NOT put in the book. Try something new! We will

have a sign-up sheet in September so that we don’t have all the same dishes.

The History Team also hopes you will bring pictures, scrapbooks, memorabilia and artifacts to have on display that day. The Church history books will be on

display again for your perusal. Banks and cookbooks will be available for those who missed the first distribution. Some cookbooks may be available for

purchase for friends and non-members. Dressing in period costume is optional but can be an interested touch.

So the History Ministry Team hopes you will make a sincere effort to come,

bring your family, invite friends and former members for a day of fellowship, memories and possible another surprise!

YOUTH KICK-OFF EVENT All youth grades 6-12 are invited to

join us at Zion UCC beginning September 25 from 6:00-8:00pm for our annual kick-off event. We will

be having a hot dog roast with chips, drinks and desserts as well as a

hayride. So come out and enjoy a great evening with friends!!

THANK YOU!! Thanks to all of our Zion family for

your thoughts, prayers, cards and other acts of kindness during Kathy’s kneecap repair surgery and recovery. Your continued thoughts and prayers

will be appreciated during Mike’s cancer evaluation and treatment.

Sincerely,

Mike & Kathy Wright
