SUCCESS.

Entertainment – two of our very own accomplished musicians

The profit was $974.37, or for the sake of simplicity, let's call it a whopping

$1,000. WOW!!!!!!

Ascension will again be supporting Operation Christmas

Child (OCC) this year through Samaritan’s Purse. You will

have the opportunity to fill shoeboxes for

underprivileged children throughout the world. Samaritan’s Purse also spreads the word of the Gospel to

these children. What better way to be the hands of Jesus?

Our goal this year is 140 boxes from Ascension.

Step 1: Select how many boxes you are going to fill

Use your own shoebox (“standard size”), plastic container, or boxes we get from

Samaritan’s Purse. Children like to receive the plastic containers (with removable lid)

because they use them to transport water to their house. They have to be about the same

size as the OCC shoeboxes (11.5”L, 6” W, 4.25” H). If you use your own box and wrap

it, you have to wrap the lid separately (they inspect the boxes).

Step 2: Decide on a boy or a girl for each box and the age range

Labels will be provided to place on each box.

Step 3: Shop

You don’t have to spend a lot of money. Most items can be purchased at the Dollar

Store.

Step 4: Pack your box

Step 5: Include $7 donation for each box if you wish.

You only need to do one donation even if you’re doing multiple boxes.

Place the envelope with your donation in one of your shoeboxes. Make your

check out to “Samaritan’s Purse.”

You can also donate online and print a barcode that you can attach to your box and

you will get an email telling you to what country your box was sent.

Step 6: Include a letter to the child if you like.

If you put your name and address on it, the children may write back.

Step 7: Put one or two rubber bands around the box.

Step 8: Pray for the child or children that will be receiving your box(es).

Pray that they will receive Christ into their hearts after hearing the Gospel.

Step 9: Bring your box(es) to church

You can start bringing in boxes November 8th. Last day to bring in boxes is Sunday,

November 22nd at Noon.

Two tables will be set up in the Narthex—one for supplies, one for box drop-off.

Recently the youth has just finished a study based on K-LOVE radio about grace. What the youth has gotten out of this study was that everything God does for us we don't deserve, it is all unmerited. We also learned that we are forgiven in His eyes because He died on the cross for us and paid the punishment that we should have paid. On behalf of the youth, we would love to thank Mrs. Saffa for doing this study, and we had an AMAZING time. We look forward to the next studies to come.

Matthias Tassotto, Youth President

SPIRITUAL GROWTH AND FELLOWSHIP The next Education Hour study will be God's Light in Gotham's Darkness. It will be held from October 18-November 29 and will be led by Rick Maas. Thank you to Cheryl Saffa for leading the first session!

Next Youth Group Meeting: Monday, November 2 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM.

Teen Quest: November 13-15. Those who have signed up for the retreat should meet at church on Friday (November 13) at 5:15 PM. Please eat dinner before you come. An email will be coming out to let you know what you need to bring. We will return to church around 3:00 PM on Sunday afternoon (November 15).

LCMS Youth Gathering: If you haven’t turned in your $100.00 deposit, LCMS permission slip and ALC permission slip, please bring them to the November 2 meeting.

SERVICE We will be assembling packages for the “Any Soldier” project which gives packages to soldiers who don’t normally receive anything from home. Thrivent Action has approved this service project and will be providing T-shirts for the youth who participate and a $250 gift card to buy supplies. Thanks Thrivent!!

FUNDRAISING The Greeting Card Sale is still going on and will continue until all boxes of cards have been purchased.

Thanks to all who attended the Premier Designs jewelry party. We raised $200 for the youth group.

The flea market youth table at the Pumpkin Fest raised $85 for the youth group.

The November fundraiser is going to be a Gift Card Sale. This is an opportunity for you to buy gift cards to places you frequently shop. A portion of each card (when it is used at the store) will be given to our Youth Group. Youth will be in the Narthex after a service in November to take your orders. Youth will also be given a form to take orders from family and friends outside of the church. Jennifer Ciccone is heading this project and can answer any questions you may have. Thanks Jennifer!!

Sunday School Mission Project: The Sunday School has

chosen Sunbeam Kids International as their mission project for this year. Christian and Alison Taylor are personal friends of

Lora Koontz and they are involved in the Rock House Students Center in Cambodia where the Bible is used in English classes

and Sunday morning church and community outreaches are all

part of their ministry. They are also involved in Human Trafficking Prevention. They are reaching into the city and

remote areas to prevent human trafficking before it starts.

Below is a thank you note received from Shirley Derbis of the Greater

Pittsburgh Literacy Council, a group that uses our facilities:

Barb,

I wanted to take this time to say thank you for all your

support – and that of the church as a whole – for the past

years of my efforts at GPLC. I will be retiring on

December 22nd after 20 years of service—probably about 19

with collaboration of Ascension Lutheran. I will miss the

collaboration, but I hope the support will continue long after I leave. I cannot

begin to tell you how this has enhanced the program serving the North Hills!

Thanks again. Please pass my gratitude along to the Pastor, Board and

congregation.

“In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard” (Gen 4:2). Why did the Lord not have regard for Cain and his offering, but did regard Abel and his offering? Was it because Abel’s offering was better intrinsically than Cain’s? No. The Book of Hebrews tells us: “By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts” (Heb 11:4). The thing that distinguished Abel’s offering from that of Cain’s is faith. By faith, Abel offered a more acceptable offering. Faith and giving are inseparable. They are two sides of the same coin. It is faith in the promises of God that leads us to give. By faith we trust that God will do what He says. By faith, we receive everything God gives as a gift from His divine mercy and goodness. For what do we have that we have not received (1 Cor 4:7)? Nothing. Everything we have comes from the Lord. By faith we give to others because God has first given to us, and by faith we trust that He will continue to provide for us all that we need for this body and life. And when by faith we give, God accepts our offerings and commends us as righteous. For by faith we are accounted righteous before God on account of Christ. Giving is a spiritual issue. But there is a flip side to this two-sided coin: Cain didn’t give an offering to God by faith. His offering did not come from faith but from someplace else. And since it didn’t originate with faith in God and His promises, it was not regarded by God. And he was not accounted righteous. This is a warning to us. Pay attention to your faith and your offerings, and from where they come. From where do your offerings come? Like all good works, offerings acceptable in God’s sight flow from faith in Christ. They are given in response to the gifts God has given to us, especially the gift of forgiveness of sins in Jesus Christ. And since they are given by faith, they will be the target of Satan’s attacks to ruin the church, do damage to the gospel of Christ, and to weaken your faith in Him. For sin is crouching at our doors, and the temptation to sin in giving is great because of the fallen world and our sinful flesh. But Jesus is greater than our hearts. Jesus has overcome the world. And by faith, so have we. By faith, we rule over them.

Synod youth set goal to provide

half-million meals at National Youth Gathering

They have the energy, the opportunity and the mission. And they are using a new tool to raise funds so it can happen.

LCMS youth are heading to the LCMS Youth Gathering again in 2016 — and this time they’re upping the ante on how many meals they’ll package for those in need.

In 2013, LCMS youth packaged more than 322,000 meals for distribution around San Antonio and other places across the country. In 2016, they want to serve even more. They invite you to help them reach a bold 2016 goal of providing 500,000 total meals for those who suffer from hunger in New Orleans and around the world.

We already have 400,000 meals covered through $50,000 of Gathering registration fees and another $50,000 matching grant from LCMS mercy ministries. We’re almost there!

Here’s how you — the most influential friends and shapers of our treasured young people — can help:

In a partnership with Wheat Ridge Ministries, a new WeRaise crowdfunding campaign is live now through November 30th. You can help by pledging any amount you desire toward a $25,000 fundraising goal that will underwrite their packaging of the final 100,000 meals.

Visit thelc.ms/youthfeedingchildren to pledge your support today. Together, we can stand alongside our young people as they serve Christ and His people around the world and grow in faith as His disciples.

So Many Options, So Many Reasons

Charitable giving offers a surprising frontier of options that help express generosity in our hearts. Being generous is what Christians have done for millennia.

The process of gift planning isn’t new. However, many people haven’t considered how it can help them experience joy in life.

You may be a person who loves supporting the Lord’s mission because it gives joyful satisfaction. You may find it challenging to accomplish generous thoughts because it seems like an either-or proposition. How can giving benefit your life or your family’s? Perhaps you welcome more thought on ways to give to your family in an appropriate way, that helps them rather than hinders. How is this best designed?

You may look to support specific ministries or to contribute your fair share. In these cases, it may be helpful to know the various avenues available to make this fun and efficient.

Gifts can be given from various assets that haven’t been considered. Some trigger tax benefits that enhance a person’s position. Appreciated assets can be given with less cost than cash. Portfolio property can be turned into a plan for generosity in ways that bring about surprising financial benefits as well.

The Government has established gifting methods that can allow donors to give away assets that are highly appreciated and avoid the tax on the appreciation. In addition, such gift plans can be established to ‘split the interest’ or pay income to a donor for a term or for lives. These ‘give it twice’ agreements offer donors a way to create income and then retain the ultimate distribution to family and ministry.

Gifts can be given and controlled to fund our generosity once our earthly lives are complete and we no longer depend on the property.

Want to explore more joy? Consider a conversation with Robert Wirth, LCMS Foundation Gift Planner at [email protected] or 716-863-4427.

“Fear Not !” Advent Devotions

Advent begins on November 29, 2015. In “Fear Not!”, Lutheran Hour Ministries’ 2015 Advent devotions by Rev. Wayne Palmer, the reader is reminded that though our lives are uncertain, God in Christ has conquered whatever might unsettle and disturb us—this includes all our stresses during the Christmas season. Following the Gospel narrative of Luke 1 – Luke 2, the reader will see that though Zechariah and Elizabeth, along with Mary and

Joseph, experience hesitation and concern at the foretelling of their sons’ births, it is faith in God’s care and compassion that steadies their trepidation. Copies of the devotions will be available on the table in the Narthex or upon request by emailing or calling Barb at [email protected] or 412-364-4463.

Working families are waiting to purchase a car; donate your car to Community Auto! Do you or a

family member have a car you don’t need or want? No matter what the condition, your old vehicle can

help a working family! Consider donating it to Community Auto, a program of North Hills Community

Outreach. Community Auto accepts vehicles in any condition, has them repaired, and sells them at below

market value to local working families who need them to get to work. Last year 36 families purchased

cars from Community Auto, and 96 more cars were sold at auction to support our program. You could

change a life and get the maximum tax deduction. FREE pickup, towing and notary! Call 724-443-8300

or visit www.communityauto.org.
