ZFV High-Speed Inspection SensorApplication Guidebook
Affordable Easy-to-Apply Quality Inspection Solutions
Simple Feature DetectionWhy Choose Omron’s ZFV Sensor? It's simple…to set up, operate, and changeover. Use ZFV to verifyeverything is in place to improve your quality and reduce waste. Thisbreak-through sensor gives you access to high-level vision systemfunctionality without complex setup or programming. Start inspectingin minutes: just Target, Teach, and Go!
Value Makes the DifferenceOmron's ZFV combines the simplicity of installation and operation you expect from a photoelectric sensor with the basic inspectioncapability of a vision system. Compared to conventional visionsystems, ZFV sensor is far easier to implement and less expensive.
While photoelectric sensors solve many inspection problems, somepattern matching tasks are beyond their range of capability. Also, properly aligning multiple photoelectric sensors increases installationtime and leads to long-term maintenance issues.
The ZFV gives you the best combination of capabilities for quickinstallation, reliable operation and minimal maintenance.
ZFV Advantages• Inspects a wide range of part features • Simple setup… no machine vision training or experience needed • Ultra fast inspections at up to 10,000 parts per minute • Reliable pass/fail results • Built-in display allows real-time monitoring • No PC needed for setup
About this GuidebookThis guidebook shows the range of application capability built intoOmron's ZFV inspection sensor. For installation and operationdirections, refer to the ZFV Users Manual, Z207-E1-01. It is availableonline in PDF format at www.knowledge.omron.com then type ZFVinto the search tool.

Existing Problems:Surface mount applications require precise positioningof all components due to the small size of leads and the pitch. These delicate leads bend and break easily.
ZFV Solution: Lead presence is verified by counting the number edges found across the part’s length. Lead separation can be confirmed by pattern match.
Additional Applications:
Surface mount components are the standard of the industry. These components require 100% inspection prior to automatic insertion.

Existing Problems:Diffuse type photo sensors used for this application are not able to resolve the new smaller components and position on the conveyor can vary.
ZFV Solution: The ZFV cannot only resolve the new components size, but it also compensate for varying positions on the conveyor.
Additional Applications:
The ZFV is shown a good part and the region of interest is selected. The teach button is pushed and the ZFV is ready to inspect!
Position of pin 1 is critical for automatic insertion machines. This part is found to be OK!
This part has been rotated 180 degrees and is found to be NG!

Existing Problems:Because of the variance in the position of the label, photoelectric sensors may not be in the correct position to detect the label. In addition, the contrast between thelabel and background may not be resolved using conventional photoelectric sensing.
ZFV Solution: The ZFV can scan within the region of interest to look for the promotional label.
Additional Applications:
The ZFV detects the presence of a promotional label. These labels may not be applied properly on the product or may be misapplied.

Rotational Alignment Using Bar Code Pattern Search Function
Existing Problems:Pre-positioned products are needed for packaging and also for additional labeling processes.
ZFV Solution: The ZFV uses pattern recognition and sends a signal to stop the rotation when the pattern is in the region of interest.
Additional Applications:
Packaging and labeling can sometimes require the product to be positioned in a predefined rotational location prior to the next process.
