INTRODUCTION

Cassava starch is a substance with high colour

(whiteness) low dirt and fiber content that

possess a strong firm, good water holding

properties and stable viscosity (Frost et al, 1997).

The word refractory means hard to fuse. It is a

material which can withstand higher temperature,

resist action of corrosive liquids and dust – laden

current of hot gases. This refractory material

consist usually a mixture of oxides obtained from

naturally occurring materials capable of resisting

load at higher temperature (Chester, 1986).

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

T

• Produce refractory bricks using cassava starch as the binder;

1• Determine the effectiveness of

producing a refractory bricks using cassava starch as the binder; and

2• Determine some of the

properties of the refractory produced.

3

This project is aimed at investigating suitability of

cassava starch as a binder for the production of

refractory bricks.

Specifically, this research will

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study involves the investigation of the suitability of

cassava starch as a binder for production of refractory

bricks and as such it entails:

Obtaining cassava starch and the refractory material

(Calcium Oxide);

Production of refractory bricks from cassava starch;

Ascertaining its suitability by carrying out physical

test analysis like its porosity, permeability, crushing

strength, abrasion resistance, erosion resistance and

linear shrinkage etc.

PROPOSED METHODOLOGY

The proposed methodologies are:

•Sample Collection;

•Crushing and Grinding;

•Sieving Analysis;

•Pre – treatment;

•Mixing;

•Moulding;

•Drying;

•Firing;

•Drop Number Test; and

•Porosity Test.

JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDYBecause of the demand and cost of refractory materials for Nigeria

industries to thrive better, there is a need to source for refractory

binders’ locally like the cassava starch to reduce the cost of obtaining

refractory for such process. This then calls for a research to

investigate the suitability of cassava starch as binder for production

of refractory bricks. It will also at the end of this research reveal

weather cassava starch can act as a good binder or otherwise.

The choice of methodology is based on the fact that cassava starch is

a substance with high colour (whiteness), low dirt and fiber content

that possess a strong firm, good water holding properties and stable

viscosity which will at the end of this research weather cassava can

act as a good binder or otherwise

PROGRESS MADE

The chapter one and two have been written

and submitted to the supervisors. Samples

has been collected and is being prepared for

the production of refractory bricks using

cassava starch as a binder.
