In his letter to Mr Trump, Mr Zahawi said Muslims living in the UK enriched their local areas and contributed much to society. Mr Zahawi could not be contacted by the Midweek yesterday, Monday, but defending his comments that he would welcome Mr Trump on a visit to the UK he told BBC Sunday Politics at the weekend: “I think this is a real opportu- nity to show him what Coventry, Strat- ford-on-Avon, Birmingham, and London look like, we are a most diverse community. “I was born in Baghdad, I came here and couldn’t speak English, I am now the Member of Parliament for Stratford- on-Avon, that’s what I’d like to demon- strate to him so that he realises that the videos are really fake, and they are ter- rorist porn, as some have described them.” Back in January, Mr Zahawi was caught up in the travel ban controversy following Mr Trump’s now-overturned decision to ban all people from certain terrorism-prone countries from entering the United States. The text of the order did not name the countries, but a White House official said they were Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia. In his letter on the President’s latest controversial move, Mr Zahawi wrote: “I am writing to register my strong dis- content over your decision to retweet three videos posted on Twitter by Jayda Fransen, a convicted racist and deputy leader of Britain First, an extreme right- wing and hateful political organisation. “The videos you have chosen to dis- tribute to your 43.6million Twitter fol- lowers seek to conflate all Muslims into one skewed and twisted stereotype in the hope of inciting religious hatred towards the Islamic community. “Whether the videos are valid or not. Both the UK and the USA have worked tirelessly to eradicate such groups in the Middle East, and at home both our countries continue to root out domestic terrorist activity and combat the radical- isation that leads to it. “I fear that your actions have put in jeopardy some of the hard work done by our state bodies, making it easier for ter- rorist groups to portray our countries as their enemies and stoking the flames of radicalisation further. “This is precisely what groups like Daesh want, and this makes it so much more vital that we do not now allow our actions to play into their hands. “You are soon due to visit the United Kingdom. When you are here I believe you would find enlightening the experi- ence of visiting our beautiful cities like Coventry, Birmingham, Manchester and London. In them you would see how our Muslim communities live peaceably alongside others, enrich their local areas and contribute so much to society. They are so far removed from the stereotypes that the videos of Britain First try to por- tray. “In June 2016 a British Member of Parliament, Jo Cox, was viciously mur- dered by a right-wing extremist as she arrived for an advice surgery she was holding for her constituents. “Among other acclamations, the mur- derer shouted ‘Britain first’ as he attacked Jo, words that correspond to the name of the organisation you have given a platform to on Twitter. “I know you take your role as Presi- dent very seriously. Kiss It Better for ChristmasTHE UK’s first ever student-led hair andbeauty salon in a hospital is appealing formore volunteers to help keep the servicerunning over the Christmas holidays.

The Kissing It Better Hair and Beauty salon, atWarwick Hospital, is staffed by Warwick Collegestudents and supported by their tutors and mem-bers of the Kissing It Better team.

To keep it open over Christmas, the charity islooking for local hairdressers and beauty thera-pists.

Jill Fraser, of Kissing It Better, said: “A fewhours of your time would be incredibly appreci-ated. At this time of year, visitors come from farand wide to visit a loved one in hospital. They

have made the effort to travel and it is naturalthat patients want to look their best to receivethem.”

Since it opened last year, the salon has provedto be a big hit with Warwick Hospital’s patients, visitors and staff, and also with the college stu-dents, who appreciate the chance to make such apowerful difference to people’s hospital experi-ence.

“The joy and delight patients feel after a treat-ment is incalculable,” says Jill Fraser. “Howmany of us, having felt poorly for a few days, make the effort to get up and have a shower andwash our hair, then feel so much better. The salonexperience offers so much more, giving patientsone-to-one attention and the chance to bond and

share stories in a lovely environment. It’s incred-ible to watch the transformation.”

South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust’sChief Operating Officer, Helen Lancaster, hasbeen a keen supporter of the project.

She said: “Feeling like yourself is essential forany recovery and something as simple as havingyour hair or nails done can help this,” she says.

Jill Fraser added: “If you could give a fewhours of your time it will be greatly appreciated. You will be supported all the way and thepatients, their relatives and the staff will owe youenormous thanks for making this Christmas spe-cial.”

Investigation leads tosub-letting prosecutionA FORMER Warwick District Council tenant has beenprosecuted for illegally sub-letting his council home.

Warwickshire Magistrates’ Court heard how MarkSkinner vacated the council-owned home in 2014, butinstead of informing the council, he allowed a tenant tomove into the property and sublet from him to avoidbeing placed on a housing scheme waiting list.

The conviction, believed to be the first of its kind inWarwickshire since the introduction of the Preventionof Social Housing Fraud Act 2013, was made followinga six-month investigation by the council’s Fraud Team.

Warwick District Council’s portfolio holder forhousing services, Cllr Peter Phillips, said: “I very muchhope this conviction sends a stark warning that illegallysub-letting or any other act of fraud against the counciland our residents will not be tolerated.”

Groups invited tobid for green fundsCHARITIES and communitygroups in Warwickshire arebeing invited to apply for up to£2,000 of funding through theE.ON Energising CommunitiesFund, available for the secondtime this year.

To be eligible for funding organisa-tions must submit a request whichsupports activities that help bringabout a reduction in their own energyuse, help generate energy from arenewable source, or provide energyefficiency advice for local people.

Applicants are encouraged to gettheir funding requests in now, aheadof the application deadline ofMonday, 29th January, 2018.

Groups can apply for funding of upto £2,000 which may cover the full or

partial cost of energy-relatedimprovements and activities.

Suzanne Doxey, Community Rela-tions Manager at E.ON, said: “We’rereally excited to be offering ourE.ON Energising Communities Fundfor the second time this year to givemore local community groups andcharities the opportunity to apply forfunding.

“At E.ON we understand thatheating bills can account for a largepart of the running costs for a com-munity group or charity and so theirneed to become energy efficient andsave on costs is really important.

“With our Energising CommunityFund we’re able to support commu-

nity groups and charities who wouldlike to become more sustainable butdon’t necessarily have the availablefunds to be able to progress withtheir plans.

“Since launching our fund in 2013,we’ve distributed over £140,000 toalmost 85 community groups nation-wide to fund energy-related projectsand it’s been great to hear the bene-fits that the funding has had, not onlyon the groups and charities them-selves, but the wider community whouse the facilities. We look forward toreceiving the applications and sup-porting more successful communitygroups with the fund.”

WARWICK School has welcomed its newest recruitin the form of Rosa, its very own therapy dog.

Meg Harper, head of counselling at Warwick, said: “As part of our continuing innovativeapproach to well-being, Warwick School has intro-duced Rosa, a Portuguese Water Dog, a hypoaller-genic dog breed renowned for their friendly andhappy disposition. A dog introduces a calming andwelcoming atmosphere, an ice-breaker if you like.

“Just being with her will provide students withwarmth and unconditional comfort, encouraging theopportunity to talk through concerns and difficul-ties.

“Her presence is also helpful in exploring a rangeof different issues.”
