We have been named Merseytravel’s Charity of the Year for 2013 – and now public transport is set to become even more accessible to people with a learning disability.

Merseytravel staff will be doing lots of fun activities to raise money for our charity, helping us to support members to use public transport.

Mencap Liverpool Chief Executive, Sarah Jones, said: “Some of our members travel independently – but for others public transport is the first crucial hurdle in accessing work, leisure, volunteering and friends.

“Merseyside has so much to offer, and the support provided by Merseytravel will allow us to help more people with a learning disability access those opportunities for themselves.”

The Charity of the Year award includes a £2,000 grant for an accessible arts

project with our ‘Access to Heritage’ programme.

We have also been given Saveaway tickets to help our members get out and about – our first trip was to Speke Hall, on Thursday 21st March, to take part in the sensory objects workshop.

Volunteer Jeff Harrop is doing a project all about transport on Merseyside to help other members learn all about it. And we’ve already helped George to learn a new bus route so that he can buy plants for his allotment from a local nursery.

We are delighted to welcome our new Fundraising Manager, Sarah Lee, to the Mencap Liverpool team.

Sarah said: “We are pulling together a calendar of activities with which supporters can get involved, including the Wirral Coastal Walk, Manchester to Liverpool Cycle ride, Liverpool to Chester Cycle ride, Liverpool Cathedral Abseil, Mersey Tunnel 10k and the Liverpool Santa Dash.

“If you want to have fun and adventure while raising money for Mencap Liverpool then I’m sure we can find something to suit you.”

Sarah Lee: About Me Hi, my name is Sarah and I am joining the Mencap Liverpool team to ensure funding is always there for the

charity to continue its great work. Here are 3 interesting facts about me:

1. I have worked as a fundraiser for charities

big and small in the North West.2. I am really looking forward to getting to know everyone at Mencap Liverpool!3. I love music, reading, cooking and pilates.

4 Men 4 Mencap LiverpoolA group of four well-known local musicians recently put on an evening of great music in aid of Mencap Liverpool – raising just under £1,800 for our charity!

I huge thanks to Ian MacNabb, Brian Nash, Ian Prowse and Grant Walker for playing on the night. Thanks also to the staff at Zanzibar Club (which kindly let the musicians have the space for free) – particularly owner Tony, who came to our office to meet our members and deliver the cheque.

If, like 4 Men 4 Mencap Liverpool, you would like to help raise money for our charity, why not join a fundraising group?

Whether you want to organise fancy dress parties, quiz nights, golf days, dinner parties, or anything else that you enjoy doing, it is easy to set up a group.

To get involved or to share your fundraising ideas with us, please contact Sarah Lee on 0151 707 8582 or email [email protected].

Empowering our carersOur carer members continue to be empowered and supported thanks to a series of themed workshops run by Mencap Liverpool.

The weekly sessions cover a range of key issues, from understanding benefits and direct payments, and activities you can do in your local area, to hands-on matters such as giving First Aid.

The workshops have been well-attended and feedback from our carers has been very positive. One carer commented: “I have really enjoyed coming to the Carers Workshops as they have been informative, friendly and fun. And I feel a lot

better in dealing with issues like direct payments now.”

The workshops finished on 26th March with a session on Wills and Trusts. We will be starting more sessions after Easter and also hope to run some sessions in the evening, for those carers who work.

If you would like to attend future workshops please get in touch with Janet on 0151 707 8582 or email [email protected].

Arty members display crafting talentsWe’ve been going crafting crazy at our exciting weekly workshops! Our members have made Christmas cards, Easter baskets and other great treats for their family and friends.

If you would like to join in the fun contact Janet on 0151 707 8582, or email [email protected]. It costs just £1.50 to take part.

Sessions are held each Wednesday (11am to 12.30pm).
