Futsal, played in more than 120 countries worldwide, is an indoor and outdoor version of association football, and forms part of the FIFA organisation. The word is derived from the Portuguese futebol de salão and the Spanish fútbal sala/de salón. All Brazilian soccer players start off with futsal from a very young age – some of the ‘graduates’ of this game include well-known Brazilian soccer players Ronaldinho, Robinho, Rivaldo and Juninho as well as Portuguese soccer star Christiano Ronaldo. The game differs from soccer in that instead of eleven players there are only five on a side, and the space it is played in is equal to the size of a netball or tennis court. The Academy has already kicked off their training programme with under-9 and under-11 SUSPI Aca- demy teams already practising their newly acquired futsal skills at the DF Malan Hall at Coetzenburg. It is the first time that this sport will be played formally on South African shores. The man to head the coaching and teaching at the SUSPI Academy is Jose Cabral, a former futsal player himself. Cabral, who has been in South Africa since last year, says he was quite surprised to see that futsal was not played in a single school in South Africa. “In Brazil, futsal is played in every primary school, and it forms part of the sports curriculum. All the Brazilian players play futsal, as it not only develops your agility, creativity and technique, but also what we call the ‘football brain’.” He says futsal has almost the same rules as soccer, and because it can be played on a netball or tennis court it makes it easier for schools that do not have the resources for a soccer field to introduce the game to the learners. “The maintenance of a soccer field is expensive, but what people don’t realise is that one soccer field is equal to 14 futsal courts. It is cheaper to build and maintain futsal courts than to have a huge soccer field. Futsal could be the way for South Africa to leave a legacy in 2010 and even after the World Cup. How can you develop and prepare the skills of your future soccer players if so many schools do not offer soccer as a school sport, or simply do not have the resources for a big soccer field? Futsal could be the answer.” SUSPI recognises the importance of this sport, not only in the light of the 2010 Soccer World Cup to be hosted in South Africa, but also because of the value it adds to the community. It is with this in mind that SUSPI has identified twelve schools in the Stellenbosch area whose teachers will attend a coaching course where they will be introduced to the rules of futsal. After this introductory course (on 27 and 28 June) they will be able to introduce the game at their respective schools. Cabral is very excited about this prospect, and says that the University has already committed itself to this pilot community project by donating goalposts, players’ bibs and balls to the twelve schools. When asked about the safety factor of futsal, Cabral responds by saying as with any sport you cannot say a sport is 100% safe. “It’s a contact sport and the players are more in contact with the ball due to the smaller playing surface, but as in soccer we have strict rules and we spend a lot of time going over the rules so that everyone is aware of them.” The twelve schools that will take part in the pilot project are Rieten- bosch Primary, Cloetesville Primary, Pieter Langeveldt, Idas Valley Pri- mary, Brückner de Villiers, Kayaman- di Primary, Lynedoch Primary, Vlottenburg Primary, Weber Gedenk Primary, Stellenbosch Primary, Pniel Primary and Groendal Primary. For further details contact Mrs Marita Snyman at [email protected] or 021 808 4563. - LIEZL SCHOLTZ Dr Anne Detjen, a German paediatri- cian and postgraduate tuberculosis (TB) researcher currently working at the Desmond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC), Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, was recently awarded a prestigious Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to continue her research at Stellenbosch University (SU). Feodor Lynen Research Fellow- ships are awarded to postdoctoral re- searchers from Germany to carry out a long-term research project (6-24 months) in cooperation with an academic host at a research insti- tution abroad. The host must be an academic working abroad who has already been sponsored by the Humboldt Foundation. The University has a longstanding history of collaboration with the Humboldt Foundation, mainly through the faculties of Theology, Arts and Social Sciences and Law. As there are no so-called Humboldtians in the Health Sciences Faculty, Prof Naas Swart of the Practical Theology and Missiology Department at the Theology Faculty at SU, and cur- rently a holder of a Von Humboldt Return Fellowship (Rückkehrstipen- dium), will act as academic host to Dr Detjen. Holiday periods always remind me of my school days, especially that lastday before the June or December holiday officially started. That was theday that the clock seemed to move slower than usual and the anxiety aroundgetting your report card had less to do with your results than with the un-bearable excitement of wanting to burst through the classroom doors andtaste freedom. The freedom to do absolutely nothing if you so desired, toread and play the hours away, to sleep late and spend time with friends andfamily.

To be honest, the excitement levels have not subsided now that I amolder. As a matter of fact, I think it may even have increased! Today, when I lock up my office and mentally wave goodbye on my way to holiday, Iunderstand why back in the day the grown-ups around me seemed a lotmore excited about those June and especially December holidays than Iwas.

However, when the adult me closes the door on another semester I, likethe rest of the staff on this University’s four campuses, get to close thatdoor with the knowledge that six months into the University year, we havemanaged to overcome some challenges, have embarked on new initiatives,extended and broadened our knowledge and have achieved small victoriesalong the way. This is what makes the university environment so excitingand vibrant.

Talking about exciting, SUSPI recently launched its Futsal socceracademy modelled on the likes of similar academies in Brazil that producedsoccer stars such as Ronaldinho, ‘Kaka’ and Ronaldo. A soccer trainingprogramme for u/9 and u/11 soccer teams already on offer at the DF MalanHall, where Brazilian soccer coach Jose Cabral from SUSPI is offering thetraining. Read all about this on page 1.

A new addition to the Stellenbosch family is South African cricket playerRoger Telemachus, who will fulfil the role of cricket coach to the Maties

Cricket Club. Liezl Scholtz speaks to him on page 1.

Also read about the Centre for Teaching and Learning’s (page 3) recentannual conference that focused on themes such as postgraduate teaching, e-learning, the teaching of first-year students and classroom research.

On page 4 you can read about all the activities at the military academy –one of the University’s four campuses – in Saldanha. Kampusnuus spoke toProf Theo Neethling and Dr Abel Esterhuyse about a conference theyattended in Moscow, which focused on Africa’s politics, economy andsecurity, as well as a number of visits by staff and students from inter-national military education institutions to the Faculty of Military Sciences.

On 12 June a vibrant group of youngsters descended on the University tocelebrate Youth Day at this institution. Read (on page 4) all about theinsightful contributions the University received from the youth whoattended the Youth Day celebration entitled ‘Is the struggle continuing?’

Tradisioneel is navorsing en onderrigas die twee kerntake van ’n universi-teit beskou. Meer onlangs het ge-meenskapsinteraksie se rol ook toe-nemend belangriker begin word,sodat Suid-Afrikaanse universiteitehulleself vandag in terme van veraldrie kernfunksies beskryf: navorsing,onderrig en gemeenskapsdiens. Aan’n navorsingsintensiewe universiteitsoos die Universiteit Stellenbosch(US) is daar voortgaande debatte oordie relatiewe status van die driekernfunksies, en veral oor die hoërstatus van navorsing teenoor onder-rig. Sulke debatte is egter nie baienuttig nie, omdat hulle onderrig ennavorsing teenoor mekaar stel, ennie genoeg klem lê op die belangrikeknooppunte en interaksie tussenhierdie aktiwiteite nie.

Universiteite is primêr kennis-organisasies wat kennis ontgin, oor-dra en toepas, en hierdie aktiwiteitebehoort mekaar te versterk. Goeieonderrig word deur die aktiewe be-trokkenheid van die dosent by navor-sing en kennisontginning in sy/haarvakdissipline onderlê. Die goeie na-vorser dissemineer navorsingsresul-tate onder andere deur onderrig aanstudente, en dra so ook by tot die

opleiding van die volgende geslagnavorsers. Navorsing en onderrigwerk dus kruisbestuiwend op mekaarin, en dit lei tot beter gehalte in albeifunksies.

Wat hier bo beskryf word, is dieideaal. In die praktyk het navorsingegter steeds aan die meeste universi-teite wêreldwyd ’n hoër prestige-waarde, en word dit beter beloon asonderriguitnemendheid. Die vraag is:Word onderrig as minderwaardiggesien aan die US, of kan dit op die-selfde status as navorsing aanspraakmaak?

Na aanleiding van ’n aanbevelingvan die Hoër Onderwys Gehalte-komitee se institusionele ouditver-slag is daar ’n projek vir die bevor-dering van die statuur van onderrigaan die US van stapel gestuur, engoeie vordering is met verskillendeinisiatiewe in hierdie verband ge-maak. Dit sluit in die beskikbaar-stelling van finansiering vir navor-singsprojekte oor onderrig en leer,geleenthede vir die dissemineringvan navorsingsresultate (soos dieonlangse Konferensie oor die Aka-demieskap van Onderrig en Leer),sowel as erkenning vir uitnemendeonderrig (soos die Rektorstoeken-

nings). Kriteria word ook tans ont-wikkel waarvolgens goeie onderrigbeoordeel kan word, terwyl verderestrategiese bestuursaanwysers wat oponderrig en leer betrekking het, ookbinnekort beskikbaar sal wees.

Die rol wat onderriguitnemend-heid in aanstellings, bevorderings endie toekenning van prestasiebonussespeel, is egter in die meeste fakul-teite gering. Professionele ontwikke-ling van akademici as dosente(onderriggewers) geld ook nie as ’nvereiste by aanstellings of bevorde-rings nie.

Op nasionale vlak is voorbeeldevan goeie praktyk vir onderrig enleer ontwikkel (HEQC, 2004), maardit het nog nie sistemies ’n invloedgehad op die verbetering van diegehalte van onderrig by universiteitenie. Buiten verenigings soosHELTASA (Higher Education Learn-ing and Teaching Association ofSouth Africa) en SAVNOHO (Suid-Afrikaanse Vereniging vir Navorsingen Ontwikkeling in Hoër Onderwys)bestaan daar nie op nasionale vlak ’nliggaam wat op sistematiese en ge-struktureerde wyse die verbeteringvan onderriggehalte bevorder nie.Het dit nie tyd geword dat Suid-

Soos ’n mensouer word, word dit duidelik dat mure nie vir teken is nie– dit is nou as jou tekeninge nie as goeie graffiti geklassi-fiseer kan word nie en nog minder vir estetiese doeleindesaangevra word – maar wel vir die kunsstuk wat ma of pateen die muur wil hang.

Hier in Matieland doen ons dinge natuurlik anders. Ons verkies om soos driejariges op die borde wat as rig-tingaanwysers dien, die snaaksste dinge te doen. As ’nletter nie afgekrap word nie, besluit een van ons slimstudente om ’n letter of twee by te voeg of om sommer

die hele bord weg te dra. Ek wonder net wat gebeur met studente wat betrap

word en of daardie studente se vonnisse nie bekend ge-maak kan word nie om as afskrikmiddel vir studente tedien wat laatnag en in die vroeë oggendure met hierdiekattekwaad besig is. Is daar enigeen by die Universiteitwat hierdie vraag kan beantwoord? En hoe en waar rap-porteer ’n mens sulke vandalisme?

Die Universiteit van Kaapstad het die “Jammie Bus”wat studente klas toe karwei. Die blou busse is ’n

welkome gesig vir menige Kaapse student, en ouers hetook die gemoedsrus dat daar aan minimumvereistesrakende veiligheid, spoed, ensovoorts voldoen word.

Kan ons nie dalk ’n AKKER-busstelsel of so iets opStellenbosch instel nie? Dalk aan die begin net vanaf diestasie kampus toe en terug, en dit mettertyd uitbrei naSomerset-Wes (vanaf Somerset Mall), Bellville (vanaf dieTygervallei-inkopiesentrum) en dalk Brackenfell en Paarl?

Openbare vervoer in Suid-Afrika moet nog baie by dieres van die wêreld leer – hoekom sal ons nie ’n oplossingprobeer vind nie? Dit blyk nie of ons studentevervoer deeluitmaak van die 2010-sokkerbeplanning nie!

Stellenbosch se parkeerplekke raak al hoe minder –selfs teen die rivier is daar deesdae verfraaiing en pale watingeslaan word om voetpaaie te verseker.

According to Dr Brenda Leibowitz,Director of the CTL, one of the mainreasons for this kind of conference is to“celebrate teaching and to giveteaching its pride of place on campus”.She goes on to explain: “We want toencourage the sharing of ideas aboutteaching and learning and look atscholarly approaches to these twofields by encouraging people to starttheorising around that which they aredoing. Teaching is a private affair andthis is also one way to share what wedo in the classroom and open it up tocritique and debate.”

Guest speakers invited to the con-ference, says Dr Leibowitz, are inter-national or national experts with some-thing valuable to share. “We invitefigures who have something useful toshare about teaching and learning andwho will bring new ideas into theinstitution,” she says.

During the conference, academics

debated educational issues, networkedand were exposed to new and practicalideas for teaching innovation andresearch.

The conference started with a key-note address by Prof Roger Moni fromthe University of Queensland inAustralia. Prof Moni’s talk, Reinven-ting undergraduate education througha focus on inquiry learning, focused onhis own perspective of how under-graduate curricula across all disciplinescould benefit from a focus on inquirylearning both as a process and as anoutcome. He emphasised four mainpoints that could contribute to thescholarship of teaching: the need forproactive educational reinvention; theneed for a better understanding of howinquiry learning, teaching, assessmentand disciplinary research could belinked effectively; case studies fromthe biomedical sciences; and the valueof broadening the definition of the

impact of the scholarship of teaching,assessment and learning within andacross disciplines.

The keynote address was followedby three parallel sessions of innovative,creative and scholarly presentations bySU academics, concluding with a paneldiscussion. The discussion, entitledTransdisciplinarity in teaching andlearning, was chaired by Dr Leibowitzand led by Prof Usuf Chikte(Interdisciplinary Health), Prof Wikusvan Niekerk (Mechanical Engineering),Mr John van Breda (School for PublicManagement and Planning) and ProfKaren Esler (Conservation Ecologyand Entomology).

On the second day, Prof Albert vanJaarsveld – former Dean of the Facultyof Science at SU and now with theNational Research Foundation –chaired a discussion on Transdisci-plinarity, postgraduate training and thepower of transferable skills. This was

followed by more parallel sessions anda panel discussion with Prof YusufWaghid, (Dean of the Faculty of Edu-cation), Prof Sandy Liebenberg (PublicLaw), Prof Magda Fourie, (Vice-Rector: Teaching) and Dr NokwandaMakunga (Botany and Zoology) onThe meaning of a pedagogy of hope forteaching and learning at SU.

During the course of the two days,three judges – Prof Moni, Prof JanBotha (Senior Director of InstitutionalResearch and Planning) and Dr Lu-dolph Botha (Senior Director ofAcademic Support) – attended theshort-listed sessions to determine thewinner of a grant to participate in anoverseas conference on teaching andlearning. The short-listed presenterswere Prof Dana Niehaus, Dr JohanDempers, Prof Razeen Davids, ProfMariana Visser, Prof Hendrik Bosman,Mr Len Steenkamp and Mr RoelofBaard, Ms Samantha Prigge-Pienaar

and Prof David Holgate.“The judges were spoilt for choice

and, in the end, decided to award twogrants. The winners were Prof RazeenDavids from Internal Medicine and MrLen Steenkamp and Mr Roelof Baardfrom Accounting,” said Dr Leibowitz.

The conference ended with twopost-conference workshops. The first,facilitated by Dr Karen Moni, alsofrom the University of Queensland,and Dr Hanelie Adendorff from theCTL, focused on assessment. Thesecond, facilitated by Dr FrancoisCilliers from the CTL, focused oneducational research.

In just a couple of years, SU’s ownconference on the Scholarship ofTeaching and Learning has earned itsplace on the University calendar – and is continuing to grow. The con-ference organisers are already lookingforward to welcoming all SU academicstaff again at this special event in 2009.

Celebrating the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning“The interdisciplinary dialogue that the conference encourages inspires and is veryexciting.” This is how one of the delegates who attended the second annual Scholarship ofTeaching and Learning conference, which extended over a day and a half, described theexperience. The conference, held recently at the Protea Hotel at Technopark, wasorganised by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL). It attracted 120 participantsfrom all 10 faculties of Stellenbosch University (SU). Thirty-nine academics presentedpapers dealing with various themes, ranging from postgraduate teaching to e-learning, theteaching of first-year students and classroom research.

Die Afdeling INB staan onder lei-ding van prof Jan Botha, en rapporteeraan die Viserektor: Onderrig, prof Mag-da Fourie. Die doel van die samevoe-ging van hierdie afdelings is om opti-male en kundige dienslewering aan die

Universiteitsgemeenskap te bevorder. Volgens prof Botha word die term

‘bestuursinligting’ doelbewus nie meeraan slegs een spesifieke afdeling gekop-pel nie. “Bestuursinligting bestaanimmers uit ’n wye verskeidenheidinligting wat binne verskillende omge-wings aan die US in stand gehou enbenut word, byvoorbeeld finansiëleinligting, personeelinligting, navor-singsinligting en studente-inligting.”

Die Afdeling INB se verantwoor-delikhede sluit ’n hele aantal sake in.

“Dit bied advies aan die US-bestuurten opsigte van hoëronderwys-beleids-aangeleenthede; koördineer die US seakademiese beplanning, met anderwoorde die sake wat met akademiesebeleid, organisasie-eenhede en -struk-ture, kwalifikasies, programme enakkreditasie verband hou; onderneem

navorsingsprojekte oor die US; produ-seer inligtingsverslae, byvoorbeeld diefeiteboeke en beplanningsinligting, enverskaf deurlopend inligting oor die USaan die bestuur, departemente, steun-dienste, studente en ander belangheb-bendes,” verduidelik prof Botha.

Die Afdeling hanteer ook die Uni-versiteit se HEMIS-indienings op grondwaarvan die US se staatsfinansieringbepaal word; koördineer die Universi-teit se inskrywingsbeplanning en -be-stuur; koördineer die US se ge-halteversekeringstelsel ten opsigte vanakademiese sowel as nie-akademieseomgewings, wat die periodieke institu-sionele gehalte-oudits insluit; tree op askantoor vir die US se skakeling met dieDepartement Onderwys, die Raad opHoër Onderwys, statutêre liggame, dievereniging van rektore van Suid-Afri-

kaanse universiteite (HESA); enverteenwoordig die US op verskillendeforums van die Cape Higher EducationConsortium (CHEC).

Dr Gert Steyn dien as Direkteur:Institusionele Navorsing, en mnr NeilGrobbelaar is die hoof van die HEMIS-kantoor in die Afdeling INB. Met dievestiging van die INB is twee vakanteposte gevul toe me Junay Adams ashoof van die Gehalteversekerings-kantoor, en mnr Leon Eygelaar asassistenthoof van die HEMIS-kantooraangestel is. In die Gehalteverseke-ringskantoor word me Adams deur mnrAndré Müller bygestaan. Me AdriBecker hanteer die skakeling met dieeksterne liggame.

Institusionele Navorsing en Beplanning gerig op kundige diens

With the onset of the seventh frame-work programme (FP7) of theEuropean Union (EU), the DRD hasgreatly increased its focus on sup-porting the University in its FP7 acti-vities. It has therefore appointed DrMeese, who has had more than 10years’ experience in framework pro-grammes during his time at the Councilfor Scientific and Industrial Research.He was one of the first South Afri-can/EU national contact points (NCPs)and is an EU expert evaluator.

Following Dr Meese’s appointment,a service was established that alerts re-searchers to upcoming FP7 calls, thatadvises on partner-search mechanismsand budgetary structures and that assistsin securing support from the Departmentof Science and Technology (DST).

“When it became known that DrMeese was moving to the WesternCape to retire, we grabbed the oppor-tunity to benefit from his expertise inthe EU’s framework programme andthe successes that he previously hadwith getting researchers involved in FPcollaborative programmes, which led toenhanced international collaboration.I’m delighted that we’re already

benefiting from Dr Meese’sendeavours,” says Prof Piet Steyn,Acting Senior Director of Research(Natural Sciences).

In order to support the University inits FP7 activities, according to DrMeese, it has become especially im-portant to ensure that Stellenbosch usesa consistent approach in developing itsproposals specifically with regard tocosts, the financial model used andeven the legal address.

“Researchers are also encouraged tobecome EU evaluators, thus serving onevaluation panels reviewing FP7 appli-cations from around the world. This isone of the most effective ways of learn-ing how the EU process operates andthe key elements that make project pro-posals successful,” explains Dr Meese.

The EU is the biggest public funderof research in the world, with its frame-work programmes being the maininstruments supporting science andtechnology in the EU’s 27 membercountries. Its first framework pro-gramme began in 1984. South Africajoined the programmes in their fourthcycle, that is, with the onset of the FP4.The current FP7 runs from 2007 to

2013 and has a total funding of €50billion.

Through the framework pro-grammes, international partnershipswith countries outside the EU (so-calledThird Countries) are encouraged and allthese international partners – includingSouth Africa – are eligible for funding.South Africa, along with China andRussia, has become one of the mostsuccessful of the Third Countries, withmore than 120 projects in the FP6. Thishas been due particularly to the supportof the DST and its creation of a systemof NCPs that act as FP informationproviders. The NCP concept was de-veloped by the EU and South Africawas one of the first of the ThirdCountries to emulate the concept.

The FP7 collaborative research armfocuses on 10 themes: health, food,agriculture and biotechnology, infor-mation and communication technolo-gies, nanosciences, nanotechnologies,materials and new production tech-nologies, energy, the environment (in-cluding climate change), transport(including aeronautics), socio-econo-mic sciences and the humanities, spaceand security.

“Proposals are consortium-driven,and coordinated and submitted by EUpartners. They’re submitted in responseto narrowly defined project callspromoted within each theme andtypically appear once or twice a year.Framework programme projects areusually three to four years long andoffer tremendous opportunities,”explains Dr Meese.

These opportunities include thedevelopment of expertise bases, theincrease and strengthening of humanresource development and the estab-lishment of valuable networks. Suc-cessful projects are about 60% fundedby the EU, while the DST contributesabout 50% of the resultant shortfall inthe South African partner’s budget.

Other smaller FP7 programmes,such as Marie Curie, support activitieslike researcher mobility. This pro-gramme includes support for the move-ment of research fellows between theEU and countries such as South Africa,and a recently introduced action toencourage co-operation between Euro-pean institutions and institutions incountries outside the EU in broadlydefined areas of expertise that allow

the gradual development of projects.“Since the start of the FP7 and since

Dr Meese’s appointment, StellenboschUniversity has experienced a sharp risein FP7 applications, and researchers areenthusiastic about the possibility ofparticipating in the programme,” saysMs Riana Coetsee, Coordinator forInternational Research Funds.

Kort voor die Moskou-besoek hettwee groepe wat uit fakulteitslede enstudente van verskeie buitelandsemilitêre opvoedkundige instansiesbestaan, ook die Universiteit Stellen-bosch (US) besoek. Die groepe hetaan werksessies deelgeneem wat gesa-mentlik deur die DepartementSosiologie, die Instituut vir Toekoms-navorsing en die Skool vir Veiligheid-en Afrikastudie in die FakulteitKrygskunde aangebied is.

Volgens prof Neethling was diehoofdoel van die Moskou-konferensie

om referate aan te hoor en samespre-kings te voer oor ’n verskeidenheidaspekte rakende die politiek, ekono-mie en veiligheid van Afrika. “Dieoorgrote meerderheid konferensie-gangers was navorsers aan die Insti-tuut vir Afrikastudie, elkeen ’n analisin eie reg met ’naktiewe belang-stelling in diegeskiedenis, hedeen toekoms vanAfrika en sy mense.Daar was ook grootbelangstelling ommeer van ons, asmense van Afrika,te leer oor gebeureop die kontinent. Ons het dan ookelkeeen referate oor belangwekkendeveiligheidkwessies in Afrika gelewer,”verduidelik hy.

“Meer as driehonderd referate isoor ’n verskeidenheid interessanteonderwerpe gelewer, waaronder Afrikaen die veranderende internasionale

energiesektor; Afrika en die internasio-nale oliemark; internasionale investe-ring in Afrika; Afrika se integrasie bydie globale ekonomie; die RussieseFederasie en natuurlike hulpbronne inAfrika; indrukke van Afrika in die oëvan jong Russe; die beeld van Afrika

in die hedendaagse openbare media;strategiese risiko’s en bedreigings inAfrika; die Russiese Federasie enSuid-Afrika: gister, vandag en môre;en die probleme van Afrikastudente inRussiese instellings van hoër onder-wys,” sê prof Neethling.

Wat die besoek egter heel beson-

ders gemaak het, sê prof Neethling, isdat hy en dr Vreÿ met hulle aankomsop die lughawe deur senior studenteaan die Russiese Staatsuniversiteit virGeesteswetenskappe ontmoet is watAfrikaans en Swahili as universiteits-vakke neem. Dié jongmense het hulle

tydens hulle besoekdeurgaans bygestaanom oor die stad heenhulle pad nabestemmings te vind– alles in Afrikaans!

Die besoek deurfakulteitslede enstudente van verskeiebuitelandse militêreopvoedkundige

instansies aan die US het afgeskopmet die aanbieding van ’n werksessieop 7 Mei aan ’n groep van die VSA,die US Industrial College of theArmed Forces (ICAF). Die werksessiehet spesifiek op die privatisering vanveiligheid gefokus. ICAF vorm deelvan die National Defence Universityin Washington DC.

Prof Lindy Heinecken van die De-partement Sosiologie het ’n aanbie-ding oor die effek van privaat veilig-heids- en militêre maatskappye op dieorganisatoriese en professionele aardvan weermagte in die algemeen, enSuid-Afrika in die besonder gedoen,terwyl dr Vreÿ oor die privatiseringvan veiligheid deur oliemaatskappyein die Golf van Guinee gepraat het.

Op 14 Mei het ’n groep senioroffisiere van die Nederlandse Ko-ninklike Weermag se LeergangTopmanagement Defensie ook dieFakulteit besoek. Lede van hierdiegroep word deur die Nederlandse De-fensie Academie voorberei vir be-vordering tot generaal- en vlagrang indie Koninklike Weermag. Prof

Heinecken het ’n aanbieding oortransformasie in die Suid-AfrikaanseNasionale Weermag gedoen, terwylprof Neethling, wat ook by hierdiegeleentheid betrokke was, oor Afrikase politieke ekonomie en die soektogna vrede en ontwikkeling gepraat het.

“Die besoeke van hierdie groepe isvan besondere belang as dit teen dieagtergrond van die groot moondhedese hernieude militêre strategiese be-lange in Afrika-veiligheid beskouword. Dit het spesifiek te make metdie hernieude belangstelling vanChina en die VSA. Die VerenigdeState het ook onlangs die sogenaamdeUS Africa Command (AFRICOM)gestig. Dit het tot ’n hele nuwe reeksvrae oor die belang en toekomsrol vanAfrika vanuit ’n geo-strategiese pers-pektief gelei. Daar kan verwag worddat hierdie hernieude belangstellingvan die Verenigde State as die toon-aangewende lid van NAVO tot ’ngroeiende militêre belangstelling inAfrika deur al die ander lede vanNAVO sal lei,” het dr Abel Esterhuysevan die Skool vir Veiligheid- enAfrikastudies gesê.

Albei groepe was geïnteresseerd inSuid-Afrika se rol in Afrika, en veralin die bydrae van die Suid-AfrikaanseNasionale Weermag tot die uitbou vanvrede op die vasteland. Dr Esterhuysehet ’n aanbieding aan albei groepe ge-doen oor Suid-Afrikaanse verdedi-gings- en strategiese denke sedert1994. Prof André Roux het ook oorverdedigingsbesteding in Suid-Afrika,en veral oor die impak van die soge-naamde vredesdividend op die Suid-Afrikaanse en streeksekonomieë gesels.

In line with a decision taken in 2006by the University to celebrate pre-deter-mined public holidays through variousevents and activities on campus, aYouth Day event focusing on the theme“Is the struggle continuing?” was heldin the Fismer Hall on 12 June.

A framework for the celebration ofpublic holidays was made public byProf Julian Smith, Vice-Rector: Com-munity Interaction and Staff in 2006. Inthat same year, the first institutionalcelebration of a public holiday was heldon 14 June to celebrate Youth Day. Ayear programme, indicating the numberof days as well as which days will becelebrated officially, is compiled andthen approved by the Rector’s Manage-ment Team each preceding year.

According to Prof Smith, theUniversity tries to create opportunitiesthrough these events to promote nationbuilding and communication betweendifference races in South Africa.

Speaking at the event on 12 Junewere three youth leaders – NaomiBruwer from Hoërskool Stellenbosch,Sherlin Barends from Lückhoff HighSchool and Ezethu Saleze from Kaya-mandi High School – as well as theDean of Students, Mr LlewellynMacMaster, who was involved in the1976 protest actions in the WesternCape, and Mr Rich de Almeida, SRmember for Unity and National Affairs.

Sixty-five learners and twelve teach-ers from nine schools across Stellen-

bosch, as well as various Universitystaff, deans and members of manage-ment attended the event. The Youth Daycelebration was organised by the Unitfor Community Interaction.

The learners who attended the eventwere unanimous in their belief that thestruggle for true freedom and justice forall is still a very pertinent topic in post-Apartheid South Africa. While thechallenges that the youth face todaymay differ from the ones that sparkedthe 1976 Soweto uprisings, newchallenges such asteenage pregnancies,drug abuse, severepoverty and brokenfamilies are majorfactors that under-mine the youth toreach their full poten-tial, the three youth leaders said. Theold challenges of unemployment, ine-quality and the lack of access to basicresources such as health care, food andhousing were also discussed.

Mr MacMaster, who was the first tospeak, shared his personal experiencesof Apartheid as a young boy and stu-dent. He told of how he and other farmchildren who lived on a farm in theEastern Cape, a farm where his ownmother grew up, were chased by dogsthat the farmer’s son let loose on themfor his own amusement. He also spokeabout his memories of separate entran-ces and separate seating areas in

cinemas in Cradock. Mr MacMastersaid that while he was always aware ofthe injustices happening around him,1976 was the “beginning of (his)political awakening”.

“This was not only a struggle againstoppression and suppression, againstexploitation and dehumanisation, andeverything that prevented black peoplefrom becoming what God intendedthem to be, but it was also a struggle forthe ideals of a democratic, non-racial,non-sexist and just South Africa. It

served as our dream, our vision for thekind of South African society wewanted to see, where we wanted to liveand where we wanted to raise ourchildren,” Mr MacMaster continued.

Mr MacMaster was followed by MrDe Almeida, who said that while manythings have changed in South Africasince 1994, the struggle to have basicneeds provided for still continues formany South Africans. “Half of ourpopulation still lives in immense po-verty,” he said. “But not enough isbeing done to relief the plight of thesepeople. And this frustration is starting toshow itself in the form of xenophobic

violence. A lot of people are frustratedabout things like the price of petrol, theEskom fiasco, crime and violence,corruption in government and the JacobZuma debacle. These are all validcomplaints.”

However, hewarned that the youthshould not look togovernment and lea-ders of the day toprovide the answersto these questionsand to solve these

problems. “It is up to us to tackle theseissues, to fight for what is ours. It is ourcountry after all, we are the ones whoare going to live here, work here, raiseour families here and make our fortuneshere.”

“Our struggle is to safeguard demo-cracy, to look after our freedom, tomake sure that the ideals that the stu-dents of 1976 fought for were not invain and are not lost. Our struggle is tolive up to that legacy.”

Mr De Almeida’s sentiments wereechoed by Ezethu, who shared some ofthe reasons why she believed that thestruggle still continued. “Allow me to

say that yes, the struggle does indeedcontinue as long as the majority ofSouth Africans are still living in povertyand are unemployed,” she said.

According to Ezethu, the struggleencompassed a much wider scope todayand included, among others, “classstruggles, socio-economic struggles, thestruggle for resources, food struggles,health care struggles, educationstruggles, as well as struggles for accessto higher education,” and the effects ofHIV/Aids on society.

Naomi, a matric learner, said thatwhile the youth of today, who were tooyoung to remember Apartheid,struggled with fully grasping the effectthat this system of governance had oncertain groups in society, she didbelieve that it remained uppermost inthe minds of young South Africans upto today. This meant the struggle fortrue freedom for all was still importantto the youth.

“If we are struggling for something,it means we still feel something and itmeans that we care enough to want tomake things better. This is why I do notbelieve that we should ever stopstruggling.”

Youth Day celebration focuses on newand old challenges faced by youngstersYouth Day, 16 June, has become synonymous with Hector Peterson, the 13-year-old boy who wasgunned down in the prime of his life while protesting against the use of Afrikaans as an enforcedmedium of instruction in black schools. Although the Soweto uprising of 1976 is but a memory to-day, the youth in South Africa is still engaging with issues both new and old in a bid to become right-ful, equal citizens in a country where the focus is on this generation to become agents of change.

Bronwyn Bock-Jonathan, die eerstepersoon van kleur om Suid-Afrika opnasionale vlak in netbal te verteen-woordig, sal vanaf Julie 2008 haartuiste hier op Stellenbosch – in haarhoedanigheid as oudstudent, dosent enkoshuishoof van Nemesia – vir Aus-tralië verruil. Vra jy vir Bronwyn hoekom sy juisnóú Suid-Afrika vir die Aussies ver-ruil, lag sy en sê dat dit seker maar tydis – in totaal is sy al 14 jaar aan dieUniversiteit Stellenbosch (US)verbonde. Sy is al sedert 1994 by dieUS toe sy as eerstejaar haar BA-graadin Sportwetenskap en Sielkunde beginhet. Nadat sy dié graad voltooi het, hetsy ’n honneurs in Sportwetenskapvoltooi en daarna ’n meestersgraad inSportwetenskap behaal. In Desember2004 het sy vir nog ’n honneursgraadgeregistreer, hierdie keer in Sielkunde,en dit met ’n PhD-graad in Sport-wetenskap opgevolg. Haar doktors-tesis was getiteld The effects of parti-cipation in movement programs on the

movement competence, self-esteemand resiliency of adolescent girls.

Sy vertel dat sy veral die studente,die diversiteit in mense by die Univer-siteit, die mooi Stellenbosch-omge-wing en die winter gaan mis. “Ek gaandefinitief die winter mis. Daardielekker stormagtige en reënerige dae.”

Maar vir eers gaan sy en haar man,Marvin, ’n nasionale bofbalspeler, enhulle tweejarige seuntjie Jordan DoerOnder aanpak.

As jy luister na hoe Bronwyn oorhaar jare as jong netbalspeler praat, isdit duidelik dat hierdie Suid-Afrikanerweet hoe om ’n uitdaging op ’n rea-listiese manier aan te pak. Sy sal dieeerste wees om prontuit te sê dat al-hoewel die kwotastelsel en haar talenthaar ’n plek in die o/21-Suid-Afri-kaanse netbalspan in 1994 versekerhet, sy nie glo haar kundigheid genoegontwikkel was om op daardie stadiumop nasionale vlak mee te ding nie.

“Ek was genooi om aan proewedeel te neem omdat ek een van dienasionale spelers by die Netball Asso-ciation of South Africa (NASA) was.Dit was die begin van ’n aantal eerstesvir my – dit was my eerste keer op ’nvliegtuig, my eerste keer in Bloem-fontein en ’n groot kultuurskok, want

dit was ook die eerste keer dat ek tydmet persone van verskeie agtergrondedeurgebring het,” verduidelik sy.

“Maar,” voeg sy by, “ek was vandie begin af eerlik oor my vermoënsen bekwaamhede in daardie stadium.”

Alhoewel die kwotastelsel Bron-wyn ’n geleentheid gebied het om opnasionale vlak mee te ding, bieg sy datdit harde werk en opofferings geverghet om tot op internasionale vlak tevorder.

“Die jaar 1994 was ’n moeilike tydvir my in terme van my akademieseloopbaan, die geleentheid om op diehoogste vlak netbal te speel, maar metdie wete dat ek nog nie gereed is nie,en die ‘crash course’ in netbaloplei-ding wat ek aangepak het. Dit was ’nmoeilike tyd in my lewe en ek het myma elke dag in trane gebel, maar aandie einde van die dag het ek geleer omte oorleef. Binne ses tot agt maandewas ek gereed om op nasionale vlak tespeel en om ’n beduidende bydrae temaak.”

Dit is hierdie deursettingsvermoëwat sy tot vandag toe in haar lewe toe-pas.

“Alles wat ek doen, doen ek na diebeste van my vermoë,” sê sy. “So ookin my werk as dosent. Ek het ’n goeie

werksetiek en ek geniet my werk metstudente. Dit is ook wat my gedryf hetom aansoek te doen vir die pos askoshuishoof van Nemesia-vroue-koshuis.”

Oor die jare heen het Bronwyn opén af van die netbalbaan ontwikkel. Sysien die pos by die Netball ACTAcademy as net nog ’n geleentheidom haar loopbaan as afrigter ensportwetenskaplike te ontwikkel.

“Ek dink netbal was maar net eenvan die sportsoorte wat bedoel is omin my lewe te gebeur. Dit was altydmaar die konnektiewe weefsel in mylewe vanaf skoolvlak,” vertel sy met’n breë glimlag. “Dit is ook een vandaardie sportsoorte wat oor die heleSuid-Afrika heen gespeel word, vanafdie informele nedersettings tot inConstantia.”

En gaan sy nou vir altyd die landvan die Springbokke vir die Wallabiesverruil? “Niks in die lewe is perma-nent nie,” antwoord sy. “Vir eers wilek daarop konsentreer om die skuif soglad as moontlik te laat verloop, endaarna op die pos wat ek moet vul.”Wat wel duidelik is, is dat die besluitom Suid-Afrika vir eers te verlaat eenvan hierdie Bok se moeilikstes totdusver was.

Suid-Afrika het ’n groot tekort aaningenieurs. Nie alleen kies te minstudente ingenieurswese as loopbaannie, maar baie leerders en onderwysersis nie bewus van die belang vanWiskunde en Fisiese Wetenskappe viringenieurstudie nie. Boonop behaalleerders nie altyd goeie slaagpunte inhierdie vakke wat noodsaaklik virtoelating tot ingenieurswese is nie. DieFakulteit Ingenieurswese het in diesoeke na ’n oplossing hierdie dilemmaop ’n vindingryke manier getakel.

Sedert die begin van 2008 bied dieFakulteit ’n module getiteld Same-lewing in Perspektief vir finalejaar-studente in Chemiese Ingenieursweseaan. Die teoretiese sy van die module

dek onderwerpe soos kultuur en teg-nologie, ingenieurswese in ’n multi-kulturele samelewing, waardestelselsen etiek, die funksionering van dieinformele sektor en nasionale, maat-skaplike en ekonomiese uitdagingssoos armoede en MIV/vigs. Diepraktiese sy van die module behels datstudente in die eerste semester eenmaal per week in die middag tutorialein Wiskunde of Fisiese Wetenskappeaan graad 10-, 11- en 12-leerders bytwee nabygeleë skole, Lückhoff Sekon-dêre Skool en Hector PetersonHoërskool, aanbied.

Die uitreikprogram het sommer nogvoor die afskop reeds vrugte afgewerp.Hester Jacobs, Wiskunde-onderwyser byLückhoff, sê party leerders het, toe hulle

gehoor het van die ondersteuning watgaan kom, dadelik van WiskundigeGeletterdheid na Wiskunde oorgeskakel.

En wat sê die studente van hierdienuwe onderneming waaraan hulle so ’nreuse-aandeel het? Een wat baiepositief is, is Louise van Zyl. “Ek isabsoluut mal daaroor! Ek het my heleskoolloopbaan aan gemeenskaps-projekte deelgeneem en vind dit baienuttig. Die leerders was met die eersteles baie stil. In die tweede week hethulle heeltemal ontdooi. Nou lewerhulle meer kommentaar, vra meer vraeen is meer interaktief. Een groot strui-kelblok is egter dat baie leerders ’nleemte het wat die vaslegging vanwiskundige beginsels betref. Ek reken

hierdie soort intervensie behoort reedsin graad 4 te begin.”

In die eerste semester het 32 stu-dente as tutors vir 300 leerdersopgetree. Die Fakulteit Ingenieurswesehoop om met hierdie ondersteuning

leerders bewus te maak vaningenieurswese as beroep, hulle ook tehelp om goeie slaagpunte in Wiskundeen Fisiese Wetenskappe te behaal, enom op lang termyn meer ingenieurs virdie land te werf.

“This double mentoring offers anopportunity to add new faculties to thenetwork. Upon her return to Germany,Dr Detjen can become a mentor forfuture Humboldt Fellows herself,”Prof Swart explained.

“Through these endeavours, DrDetjen and I aim to enhance the colla-borative network that already existsbetween the SU Faculty of Theologyand the Faculty of Theology at theUniversity of Berlin,” Prof Swart said.In addition, they wish to strengthen ahealth care focus in the programmesthat are jointly offered.

Back in Germany, Dr Detjen worksat the Department of Paediatric Pneu-mology and Immunology at theCharité University Hospital of theHumboldt University in Berlin. “WhileGermany is a country with a lowincidence of TB, it lacks experts in thefield, especially with regard to child-hood TB,” said Dr Detjen.

Dr Detjen came to the Centre inJanuary 2007 to broaden her ex-perience in the management of child-hood TB and HIV and do research onchildhood TB.

“Children, especially young chil-dren (under 1 year) have an extremelyhigh risk of developing tuberculosisafter infection. The risk of TB de-

veloping in HIV-infected children is atleast eight-fold higher than in immune-competent children. However, thediagnosis of TB in children isparticularly difficult and the IGRAs(interferon-gamma release assays) thatI focus on may offer a more sensitiveand specific diagnostic tool. Data onthe use of IGRAs in children in areashighly endemic for TB and HIV isextremely scarce, especially in thisvulnerable high-risk population,” ex-plained Dr Detjen.

The Fellowship will allow her toestablish a network in her field ofresearch and to build an ongoingcollaboration between her institution inGermany and SU. With the help of theFoundation she will also be able to

return to South Africa in the future.Prof Beyers said the Centre had a

strong research team who would sup-port Dr Detjen in her endeavours.“During her few months’ stay in SouthAfrica, Dr Detjen has proved herselfas a dedicated, hardworking re-searcher. I am confident that she willadd valuable, much-needed data onchildhood TB to the scientific commu-nity through this study,” Prof Beyersconcluded.

Me Yolande Brink het die prys virdie beste nagraadse student met ’n na-vorsingskwalifikasie ontvang vir haarMSc in Fisioterapie cum laude. Sy hetal internasionaal gepubliseer enverskeie voordragte gelewer. Haarnavorsing het tot samewerking met die

Fakulteit Ingenieurswese gelei en maakdeel uit van ’n ooreenkoms met dieWes-Kaapse Onderwysdepartement(WKOD) wat behels dat US-navorsersas konsultante optree in skole waarrekenaartoerusting in gebruik is.

Die onlangse navorsingskapasiteitsbou-werksessie wat deur die Afdeling Na-vorsingsontwikkeling (ANO) virnuutaangestelde navorsers op die kam-pus aangebied is, het wye belangstellinggelok oor hoe navorsers ’n navorsings-loopbaan hier kan ontwikkel.

Hierdie werksessies word jaarliksaangebied om jong navorsers – navor-sers wat vir die eerste keer met navor-sing begin of wat nuut tot navorsing indie universiteitsomgewing is – ’n breëoorsig van navorsing aan die UniversiteitStellenbosch (US) te gee, asook om diedienste van die ANO en ander universi-teitsnavorsingstrukture aan hulle bekendte stel.

“Omdat navorsing ’n eensame taakkan wees, is hierdie werksessies ook ’ngeleentheid vir navorsers om netwerke tevorm en om vrae te vra oor navorsing bydie Universiteit. Hierdie dag is ook deelvan die jaarlikse navorsingskapasiteits-bouprogram vir personeellede,” het meFran Ritchie van ANO verduidelik.

“’n Verskeidenheid werksessies wordregdeur die jaar aangebied – meestalgratis – om navorsingskwessies te be-spreek en om geleenthede te skep omnavorsingsvaardighede, byvoorbeeld dieskryf van artikels, die skryf van navor-singsbefondsingsvoorstelle, nagraadsestudieleiding en aanbiedingsvaardighedeby konferensies, in te skerp,” het sygesê.

Prof Arnold van Zyl, Viserektor:Navorsing, het die groep toegespreekoor hoe hulle deur middel van hul eienavorsing ’n bydrae kan maak tot dieUniversiteit se uitnemendheid. Hy hetook verduidelik hoe hulle hul navor-singswerk relevant kan maak tot diePedagogie van Hoop en die instelling seVisie 2012.

“Die idee is om kritiese denke te be-vorder en om vanuit verskillende dissi-plines met mekaar in gesprek te tree. ’nPedagogie van Hoop beteken dus dat diekennis wat hier gegenereer word, ’n by-drae kan lewer om die wyer gemeenskapte omvorm,” het hy verduidelik.

“As jong navorsers het julle ’n ver-

antwoordelikheid en ’n plig om te rea-geer, om ’n bydrae te maak om die rea-liteite van armoede, haweloosheid,sosio-ekonomiese uitsluiting en wan-hoop in Suid-Afrika aan te pak. Aan dieander kant moet die navorsingsuitsetteook dien om die industrie meer inter-nasionaal mededingend te maak.”

Hy het aan die navorsers gesê dathulle ook bevoorreg is om ’n “labora-torium in hulle agterplaas” te hê. Hier-mee het prof Van Zyl verwys na dieunieke plante, rotse, diere en oseane watin en om Suid-Afrika bestaan en dieverskeie kulture en tale wat in die landfigureer. Uitdagings soos die breë voor-koms van Fetale Alkoholsindroom, MIVen vigs asook tuberkulose bied ook grootnavorsingsgeleenthede. Verder is Suid-Afrika histories ideaal geleë as ’n deur-voerroete van die Weste na die Ooste,maar ook vandag as ’n deurvoerroetevan die Noorde na die Suide.

“Ons moet verseker dat die akti-witeite van die Universiteit sodanigsaamgesnoer is dat ons kan fokus ophierdie uitdagings en ’n verskil kanmaak,” het hy gesê. Hy het bygevoeg datdit ook van kardinale belang is dat na-vorsingsuitsette invloei op die onder-rigkurrikulum vir studente.

Prof Jane Bennett, Direkteur van dieSentrum vir Genderstudies aan die Uni-versiteit van Kaapstad, was die hoof-spreker by die geleentheid en het in haaraanbieding gefokus op hoe jong akade-mici navorsing kan begin doen wat nienet relevant is tot Suid-Afrika en Afrikanie, maar ook kennis kan genereer watin Afrika ontwikkel is. Dit, het sy gesê,beteken dat navorsers in Suid-Afrika ooknouer met ander navorsers in Afrikamoet saamwerk om kennis te ontwikkel.

Sy het gesê dat die groter poel akade-mici wat om ’n kleiner poel navor-singsgelde meeding dit nou noodsaaklikmaak dat navorsers innoverend begindink en as entrepreneurs te werk gaan.

This book provides a modern, synthetic overview of what is known about the structure, functioning andinteractions of marine and terrestrial systems at the Prince Edward Islands. Building on more than 50

years of biological, geological, meteorological and oceano-graphic research, it demonstrates not only how inextricablylinked marine and terrestrial systems at the islands are, butalso how global environmental challenges such as climatechange, biological invasions and over-exploitation areplaying out at the regional and local levels in the SouthernOcean.

It is against a postcolonial backdrop that this collection ofessays aims to make a contribution to understanding therealities of urban centres that feature less frequently in theacademic press. The research reported in this collectionechoes and highlights many of the themes found in both theurban theory derived from the realities of many ‘world cities’,and in the challenges remarked upon in the developmenttheory found in much of the work focused on South Africa’smain metropolitan regions. However, the exploration of theseissues on a different scale and in a different locational contextalso features different perspectives on South Africa’schanging urban society, its problems and its challenges.

According to Prof Boehmer, who isalso an Professor Extraordinaire at theEnglish Department at SU, Africa hasoften been represented as that “whichis outside history, outside rational un-derstanding” and sometimes even“outside received language itself” inthe discourse of the West. She argues,however, that Africa is “at the sametime, through and through, a construc-tion of the West, a Western product”.

“Recently, however, since 1990,certain developments have unfoldedthat have begun to re-inflect and fraythat epistemology of African alterity[‘otherness’] in interesting ways. Thesedevelopments include the at-oncenational and international configurationof the reputation and representation ofNelson Mandela,” explains ProfBoehmer.

“A situation has now developedwhere, I would contend, the transna-tional formation of our understandingof Africa, though not fully revised, is

more openly acknowledged and moreself-reflexively and energeticallyperformed. Africa, it is now morewidely recognised, is neither all localeand region, a space confined to areastudies; nor is Africa purely the blankdarkness of Western representation.”

Prof Boehmer says that discourseson Africa have emerged between thelocal and the global and that theyinvolve more African commentatorsand participants “who themselvescirculate transnationally between thelocal and the global”.

During her talk, Prof Boehmerrelated her discussion on the topic ofthe international currency of cross-cultural Africa to her recently releasednovel, Nile Baby and, specifically,Nelson Mandela: A very short intro-duction. “The two books are linkedthrough their varying recognitions notonly of how transcultural represen-tations of Africa have internationalcurrency but also of how Africa has

always been part of the discourse ofEurope, and of the black and redAtlantic and the global.”

Prof Boehmer’s discussion of theMandela book also touched on howMandela’s humanist vision becameembodied in his person through livedexperience. “Certain kinds of know-ledge,” she argues, “need to be felt onthe body.” Mandela’s humanistideologies became the embodied know-ledge – that which is felt on the body –of a redemptive political leader.

This embodiment, says Prof Boeh-mer, is further seen in the feminisationof Mandela’s way of interaction withothers, especially in the way he soughtdialogue with everyone around him,his interest in likeness rather than diffe-rence, the way he championed the artof listening and his acceptance of theunpredictable and complex nature ofhumans.

His dialogic practices in prison andbeyond also “contributed forcefully to

the postcolonical redefinition of thehuman proclaimed by Fanon” – in Thewretched of the earth, Fanon speaks ofhow the Third World is to re-humanisethe masses of mankind and rewritehistory – “yet at the same time pulled itin a different direction”.

Mandela, instead, placed Africawithin a range of categories, such asrationality, morality and justice, cate-gories from which it had previouslybeen excluded. In changing the spacethat Africa occupied within discoursesof humanity, he also embodied tradi-tional feminine modes of interaction,

such as conversation and listening.“To the new humanism, he added,

first, the idea that the colonised remakethemselves through forms and energiesother than – or at least in addition to –those involved in death. In otherwords, he disposed of Fanon’s ‘irre-pressible violence’ as a means of mak-ing history and, instead, championedconversation, trust and listening.”

“The African was at the centre ofhis concept of the human, and not themargin or outside against which thehuman was understood, as was moreconventional,” says Prof Boehmer.

While here, she shared her thoughts onthe international currency of cross-cultural Africa in literary circles. “Nie net die briewe wat sy ontvanghet nie, maar die meeste wat sy selfgeskryf het ook. Tydens die opstel vandie Audrey Blignault-katalogus is besefdat dié juweel – haar briewe geskryfsonder oog op publikasie – gepubliseermoet word sodat meer mense dit kangeniet en waardeer. Buitendien, uithoeveel mense se korrespondensie kanbykans ’n hele lewensloop agterhaalword?” vertel Brink.

Op elfjarige ouderdom, vertel Brink,het die talentvolle Audrey ’n gedig oorhaar grootworddorp, Bredasdorp, ge-skryf. Haar onderwyseres, Miss GladysHuxham, reël toe sonder Audrey semedewete dat dit in die plaaslike koe-rant verskyn. Dit was die begin van ’n

skrywersloopbaan waarvan HennieAucamp jare later in die inleiding vanDie eindelose avontuur sou sê: “AsLangenhoven sy mense aan die leesgekry het, het Audrey Blignault gesorgdat hulle aan die lees bly, maar meernog: sy het haar lesers ’n sin virproporsie en skaal probeer bybring deurdie wêreldletterkunde na hulle te bring– in Afrikaans.”

Kort ná Audrey en haar eerste man,Andries Blignault, se troue in 1941, hetAndries besluit om verder te studeer.Hy wou mediese dokter word en dan inpsigiatrie spesialiseer. “Audrey het toebesluit om haar werk as onderwysereste laat vaar en ’n lonender pos te krywaarmee sy alleen die pot aan die kookkon hou en so Andries in staat kon stelom voltyds verder te studeer.”

Sy is aangestel as redaktrise van dieweekblad Die Huisvrou en het self dietydskrif sonder enige ervaring bestuur.Hierdie pos het sy elf jaar lank gevul.In 1947 is Audrey genader om ’nradioprogram vir vroue te begin. Sy het

die aanbod aanvaar, hoofsaaklik omdatdie SAUK-ateljees naby Die Huisvrouse kantoor was. Hier was sy ookaanvanklik alleen verantwoordelik virdie program Vrouerubriek.

In 1950 het sy ook begin met dierubriek ‘Uit die dagboek van ’n vrou’vir die Sarie Marais, waarmee syuiteindelik 22 jaar lank volgehou het.Hierdie essays is deur die jare inversamelbundels soos Met ligter tred,Die rooi granaat en Die blye daegepubliseer. Audrey het deur die jareverskeie letterkundige pryse vir hierdieessays ontvang. Die US self het virAudrey in 1990 met ’n eredoktorsgraadin die Lettere vereer.

Een van die persone met wieAudrey, ’n ywerige briefskrywer,gereeld gekorrespondeer het, was profElize Botha, voormalige Kanselier vandie US wat einde 2007 oorlede is.Hierdie briewe is ook deur die same-stellers vir die Dokumentesentrumbekom. “’n Gedeelte uit prof Botha sedekbrief by dié skenking verwoord

presies die persoon wat AudreyBlignaut was,” sê Brink en Fourie.

“Dit was vir my belangrik dat diebriewe ’n beeld sal bou van die mensAudrey, van die soort vriendin wat syvir ’n ewemens was (’n woord vanM.E.R. wat sy graag en reg gebruikhet), van die dinge wat haar aange-gryp het, van haar erkentlikheid teen-oor goeie gewers, haar hartstog virdie juiste woord en veral natuurlik virdie funksie van die woord-as-litera-tuur. Daarmee saam gaan ’n litera-tuurbeskouing wat sentreer in dieonvergelyklike waarde wat die lite-ratuur vir haar het, wat keer op keergetuig van hoe sy ten diepste omgeevir die letterkunde en hoedat sy inliterêre werke, in toepaslike aanha-lings verwoording vind vir lewens-ervaring,” het prof Botha geskryf.

Ná die dood van haar eerste man,Andries, in ’n motorongeluk by Foch-ville in 1967 het Audrey in 1970 metAttie de Villiers getrou en woon tans inBerghof aan die voet van Tafelberg.

SU SPEARHEADS RESEARCH INTO GREEN ELECTRIC VEHICLEThe Electrical Machines Laboratory (EMLab) at the Department of Electricaland Electronic Engineering at the University has been conducting research anddevelopment on various electrical machine drive systems for electric trans-portation systems over the past decade. Recently EMLab has initiated a projectfinanced by the South African National Energy Research Institute (SANERI) toinvestigate the innovative and highly reliable electric machine drives for Elec-tric Vehicle (EV) applications. This project is now receiving further supportfrom General Motors South Africa who granted an Opel Corsa Lite to EMLabfor EV research. In this research and development project, the Opel CorsaLite will be converted to a pure battery-powered Corsa Lite, called the E-Corsa Lite. PROF BASSON INVOLVED IN DAM’S HYDRAULIC STRUCTURE COMPONENTS

Earlier this month the outlet works and emer-gency gate of the Berg River Dam near Fransch-hoek were tested as part of commissioningtests. Prof Gerrit Basson, Director of the Insti-tute for Water and Environmental Engineeringat the Department of Civil Engineering ofStellenbosch University (SU), was involved inthe design of all the hydraulic structure com-ponents of the scheme, such as the dam spillwayand outlet works. The hydraulic structureswere also tested and optimised in scale modelsat the Hydraulics Laboratory of SU prior toconstruction in the field. Die eerste simposium van die Wes-Kaapse tak van die Suider-AfrikaanseVereniging vir Plantpatologie (SAVP),waarvan dr Karin Jacobs van die Uni-versiteit Stellenbosch (US) as presidentdien, is onlangs by die Infruitec-kampus van die Landbounavorsings-raad (LNR) Infruitec-Nietvoorbij inStellenbosch gehou. Volgens dr Jacobshet 23 sprekers by dié simposium praat-jies oor die toekoms van swamdodersen alternatiewe metodes vanplantsiektebeheer, patogeen-identifi-kasie en -opsporing, plantverbetering,en die bestuur van na-oessiektes om diebederf van geoeste gewasse te voorkomaangebied.

Die dag is deur 124 deelnemersvanuit verskillende sektore, onderandere universiteite in die Wes-Kaap,die LNR, die Departement van Land-bou, swamdodermaatskappye, plant-verbeteringsbedrywe en produsente

bygewoon. “Die doel van die simposium was

om beter interaksie tussen die bedryfen die onderskeie navorsingsinstansieste bewerkstellig,” vertel dr Jacobs.

Dr Jacobs, wat aan die DepartementMikrobiologie verbonde is, het diesimposium met ’n kort toespraak oordie geskiedenis en rol van die SAVPgeopen. “Hierdie vereniging moet as ’ngespreksforum vir lede dien. Geleent-hede soos hierdie is ook belangrik virdie oordrag van kennis,” het dr Jacobsgesê. “Dit is belangrik om interaksietussen die akademie en dieverskillende bedrywe in die on-middellike omgewing te bewerk-stellig.”

Die hoofspreker, prof Bill Fry vanCornell University in die VSA, wattans met sabbatsverlof by die Departe-ment Plantpatologie van die US is, hetoor Die skakel tussen basiese plant-

patologiese navorsing en plantsiekte-bestuur gepraat. Sy boodskap was datakademiese studies by universiteitedikwels die voorloper van tegnologieëis wat later in die veld aangewend kanword om plante teen siektes te be-skerm. Hy het ook benadruk dat ditbelangrik is dat nuwe, vindingrykemaniere van plantsiektebeheer voort-durend ondersoek word.

Daar was veral belangstelling in diesessie oor die toekoms van swam-doderbeheer. Mnr Petrie de Kock vanBayer CropScience het die belang endie omvang van gewasproduksie in dieWes-Kaap beklemtoon. Mnr Cordeiro het gepraat oor vol-

houbare ontwikkeling en die stappe watnou nodig is om die wêreld te transfor-meer. Hy sê dat opleiding, die ekologieen energie-alternatiewe die grootsteuitdagings vir ontwikkeling is.

Volgens mnr Cordeiro moet menseook kollektiewe intelligensie begin be-nut en dat ensiklopedieë soos Wikipediadie begin van die semantiese web is.“Tweeduisend jaar gelede het mensegeglo die wêreld is plat en nou is teg-nologie besig om die wêreld in ’n glo-bale stad plat te druk.”

Luidens die Indeks van EkonomieseVryheid gaan ekonomiese vryheid handaan hand met toenemende groei. MnrCordeiro het statistiek aangehaal watgroei in vryemarkekonomieë met groeiin kommunistiese lande tussen 1950 en1990 vergelyk. Vryemarklande soosPuerto Rico, Taiwan, Suid-Korea, Wes-Duitsland, Oostenryk en Kenia het ge-durende hierdie tyd beduidend betergevaar as kommunistiese lande soosKuba, Sjina, Noord-Korea, Oos-Duits-land, Hongarye en Tanzanië. Volgenshom is politieke stelsels dus deurslag-gewend vir ekonomiese groei.

Mnr Cordeiro was van mening datdie toekoms van die wêreld in Asiëgeskryf word terwyl die VSA teen ’ngemiddelde spoed aanbeweeg enEuropa besig is om te stagneer.

“Energie is die grootste bedryf indie wêreld. Ons het 10 000 keer meersonkrag as wat ons kan verbruik. Alwat kort is die tegnologie om die son seenergie te omskep in energie wat ons

kan gebruik,” het hy gesê.Hy het genoem dat elke generasie

van energie minder koolstofdioksiedvrystel soos ons van hout en steenkoolna olie en gas beweeg. Die energie vandie toekoms, soos son- en waterstof-energie, sal dus baie meer omgewings-vriendelik wees.

“Een van die belangrikste maniereom ’n beter toekoms te skep lê in diekrag van netwerke of gesamentlikepogings. Jou ingesteldheid teenoor dietoekoms is net so belangrik. Jy sal indie toekoms swaarkry as jy passief isen jou kop soos ’n volstruis in die sanddruk. Jy kan ook reaktief wees en opsituasies reageer of ‘pre-aktief’ wees envir die toekoms voorberei, maar diebeste is om proaktief te wees en dietoekoms te skep. Daar sal nie in dietoekoms ’n verskoning vir armoedewees nie omdat ons weet wat werk.Ons misluk nie omdat ons nie beleidkan opstel nie. Ons misluk omdat onsdit nie in werking kan stel nie,” het

mnr Cordeiro gesê.“Hoe vinniger ons vorder, hoe

verder moet ons vooruit kan sien. Ekglo toekomsstudies, waar ons gesa-mentlike versiendheid gebruik om dietoekoms te skep, net so belangrik soosgeskiedenis moet wees.”

Mnr Cordeiro het die eerste formelekursusse in Toekomsstudies by die Aus-trian School of Economics in Venezuelaontwerp. Hy is ook die stigter van dieVenezuela-tak van die World FutureSociety.
