• As an educator who is interested in applying for the President’s Innovation Fund, you may want to investigate a topic of professional interest, which is related to teaching and learning in your discipline.

• A literature review is a required component of your proposal for the Innovation Fund.

• It is necessary to conduct a literature review on your topic, before gathering evidence for your idea/study.

Studies in education often include, but are not limited to, some of the following topics:

• The effectiveness of a new teaching method implemented in your course;

• An investigation on strategies to improve student engagement; • The effectiveness of an existing program (e.g., mentoring

program, certificate program); • Social media in the classroom; • Success among students within a specific age range (under 20

year olds, 20-35 year olds, over 35 year olds); • Success among a specific group (dual enrollees, Hispanics, non-

Hispanics, new immigrants, full-time students, part-time students, etc.); or

• Success of graduates within a discipline.

• A literature review is a synthesis of recent, seminal and landmark studies on your topic (Leavy, 2017; Pan, 2017). The review should place emphasis on primary and/or scholarly sources.

• The literature review provides a summary of all major information known about a well-defined topic (O’Neill, 2019).

• It defines and clarifies the problem. What is the problem am I addressing at MDC, and how do I define it?

• Identifies the main ideas, conclusions and theories; establishes similarities and differences.

• Summarizes previous investigations to inform the reader on the state of research. Creswell, (2014) suggests that your summary of each research study should include the following:

• Mention of the problem being addressed; • A statement of the central focus of the study; • A brief statement about the sample, population, or subjects; • A review of the key results/findings that relate to the proposed

study; • Creswell, also, has specific summary suggestions for qualitative

and quantitative studies.

• A good search is part of conducting a literature review. This ensures that you locate good quality information sources. Sources are usually found in academic/peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, technical reports, thesis and dissertations, books, audio-visual recordings, etc.

• It is important to narrow your search and use relevant keywords to locate recent, landmark or seminal studies. Recommended Resources for finding information, at MDC, include the following: • ERIC database • MDC Library Databases • Google Scholar

• Please contact a MDC librarian on your campus for research assistance.

Page 16: Z À ] Á t v Ç UE } À u ò U î ì í õ D } } WD P ^ Z ] Ç U ...Z W l l Z X } Z } X } u X í ò X o ] v Á X } P l o } P ] v X Æ M ] A µ A v o l E A í ð õ ó ï õ ñ ] A

Your literature review may be organized in one of the following ways:

• By concepts or theories of interest – noting similarities and differences;

• The historical/chronological development of perspectives on the topic;

• Methodological similarities among studies reviewed.
