RACIAL JUSTICE RESOURCES Many of us value racial unity and reconciliation but few of us are able to put it into practice. Perhaps it’s because

we don’t fully understand the issues or we don’t know where to start. Below are some resources to help you

On July 18, Nancy Eshelman’s piece in the Patriot News criticized the state tax added to cigarettes. The piece was riddled with troubling hyperbole that exaggerated or misrepresented the tobacco issue. For example, smokers have not been chased from public places, smoking has. Smokers are free as always to join others in bars, restaurants, and public parks; it is the cigarettes that are unwelcome. Eshelman additionally listed a number of other mortality risks that aren’t taxed, but the fact that motorcyclists, drinkers, and non-smokers may also die prematurely does not, as she suggests, negate the strong empirical evidence linking tobacco to cancer since the 1950s. This kind of armchair science is smoke and mirrors, attempting to distract the reader. But more seriously for YWCA programs, and directly pertaining to the work of Rape Crisis Services here, Eshelman’s assertion that smokers are being raped with this tax does not serve her argument and does harm to actual survivors of sexual assault. At Rape Crisis, staff and volunteers encounter community resistance to supporting survivors. Victims are routinely disbelieved, blamed, scrutinized, and demeaned. Careless metaphors like the one employed by Eshelman comparing a tax increase to sexual assault doesn’t just make Eshelman's argument weaker, it does a further disservice to the lives of survivors by adding to and encouraging a discourse that diminishes and minimalizes experiences of sexual assault. It matters what language we use. How we talk about the people in our communities has an impact on real people: parents, friends, co-workers, people we know and interact with – often people that we care about. How we talk and the words we use is important to the work we are doing to end violence and support survivors, and it’s important to the lives and well-being of survivors. -Miller Hoffman, Counselor/Advocate

SUPPORT GROUPS

Debra McNaughton has been serving on the SA/RCS hotline since the fall of 2015. She got involved with the YWCA because she feels it is a worthwhile organization to dedicate her time to after

recently retiring from the New Cumberland Army Depot after more than 35 years of service. She lives outside of Millerstown and is active in her church with the gospel team, choir, and Bible studies. Debra enjoys music, observing wildlife, reading, and doing crafts. The SA/RCS team appreciates Debra’s volunteer contributions to our program. She is dependable, always willing to help, and takes many hotline shifts per month. She recently joined the SA/RCS Advisory Committee where she will have the opportunity to further share her time and talent with us. Thank you, Debra, for all that you do to support YWCA Carlisle and survivors in our community!

Effective Dec. 31, 2014 new requirements for mandated reporters in Pennsylvania became law. It’s critical that businesses and organizations that work or come in contact with children give their employees training about the new mandates and what they are responsible to report. YWCA Carlisle provides on-site training on the new requirements. The training includes: the forms of abuse and neglect, identification of the role of mandated reporters, and the mandated reporting process. The training is approved for Act 126 requirements of the PA public school code. To find out about rate information, to schedule a training, or for more information please contact Shannon at 717-243-3818.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Virginia Smith

Virginia (Ginny) Smith is a longtime advocate and ambassador for YWCA Carlisle and her model philanthropic leadership has ensured the success and longevity of programs and services to our community. Our gratitude to Ginny and her mother, June Lutz, for their tireless efforts to promote and support this agency is commendable and one to be modeled. Ginny has recently served two board terms from November 2010-October 2016. She has chaired the In Good Taste event as well as served on the event committee for Queen of the Green. “Despite being rained out, The Queen of the Green golf event was wonderful to be a part of. I was thrilled to see such a diverse and fun group of women coming together to support YWCA Carlisle,” Smith said. Ginny owns and operates KG Looks and Clothing by ETCETERA. Her kindness, fundraising leadership skills, commitment to the mission and impassioned efforts to better our community are appreciated and valued.
