Youth With A MissionStatement of Purpose

YWAM is an internationalmovement of Christiansfrom many denominations

dedicated to presenting Je-sus Christ personally to this

generation, to mobilizing asmany people as possibleto help in this task, and to

the training and equippingof believers for their part infullling the Great Commis -

sion. As citizens of GodsKingdom we are called

to love, worship and obeyour Lord, to love and serveHis body, the church, andto present the Whole Gos-pel for the whole person

    throughout the whole world

    YWAM ChicagoStatement of Purpose

YWAM Chicago is commit-ted to citywide ministry, topresenting the gospel to

the immigrant and ethnicpopulations of our city andtraining and releasing them

into missions, while meet-ing social needs of the city

    through long-term com-munity development and

    short-term outreaches.

According to Scripture, it is the blessing of God when the nations are

drawn toward His people (Gen 22:17-18; Is 2:2; 60:1-5). Likewise, Godoften waits to display His presence and power until those strategicmoments when the peoples of the earth are assembled (Acts 2:1-12)With the modern phenomenon of globalization and urbaniza-tion, we are witnessing the greatest migration of ethnic diver-sity descending upon our cities that has ever been seen in hu-man history. There are an estimated 150 different nationalitiesliving within a four-mile radius on Chicagos Northside. The stu-dents in the public schools alone speak 110 languages natively.

God is partnering with His Church to see the nations reached withthe Gospel by positioning them in reachable environments such

as the cities. Furthermore, by harnessing this gift of urbanization,we can also see the release of these nations gifts discipled, re-sourced, and thrust back around the world in global evangelism.

Informed and strategic prayer movements have always precededmission movements. When the church is informed, it is empoweredto pray and have faith for the seemingly impossible. Historical-ly, whenever the church has prayed it has been moved to action. One of the most recent examples of this has been the adopt-a-people prayer movement of the late 80s and early 90s. Thatmobilization of informed intercession spawned the greatest mis-sionary advancement of the church toward un-reached peoplesthe world has ever seen. Prayer does truly bring us into the heartof God and can give us eyes to see what He is doing in the world.

Whenever teams have come to work with us in Chicago, the reac-tions are always the same, I had no idea that there were so manypeople groups here in the city. What a strategic opportunity! Throughthe mobilization of informed intercession, over the strategic migra-tion of peoples into our Urban centers, I am convinced that we canonce again see the kind of missionary mobilization needed to har-ness what the Lord is orchestrating in our time. We are living in a timeof Urbanization. There is a strategy of God for our time. Lets take theexample of History and work to inform, mobilize prayer, and mobilizeaction into the city! In partnership with GlobalROAR we have put to-gether a 31-day prayer guide focusing on 31 of the least evangelizednations of the world located in Chicago. Our hope is that it can be atool to increase informed intercession and involvement of the Churchin Chicago. You will nd more information on how to get these Eth -nic Embrace prayer guides in this newsletter. May God bring a newadvancement of His church into these strategic city neighborhoods.May it be said of this generation that, like the men of Issachar, theyunderstood their times and knew what they should do (I Chron 12:32).

Chicago MinistriesBelmont and Clark is the intersection of one of the most infamous alternative districts in Chi-cago. Ruth Troyer has worked in this neighbor-hood for 5 years and its where she met JohnStockman, who had also lived and worked in thesame neighborhood for 7 years. John went onto train with YWAM Denver, met and marriedAmanda. The Stockmans moved back to Chicagoand joined our YWAM staff. We all met up andtalked about our vision for the neighborhood. Itwas then that we realized that our neighborhoodneeded a tangible presence of the kingdom of God. We realized that the need for community wasgreat, so we decided to make this vision a reality.

Acts 2:42-47 tells us about the formation of the early

church and at their core was community. We seek to be a community that reects the values of the church

in Acts. We feel called to be missional in our actions, incarnational in our neighborhood, and intentional in our relationships. We want to model the Kingdom of God with hospitality, the arts, relational discipleship, in our work, andthrough taking up the cross in issues of social/environmental justice and stewardship. Our prayer is thatthrough living out the Gospel holistically, the Holy Spirit will bring transformation to our neighborhood and city.

    City of Bridges

Chicago is home to 50 river bridges, making it the city with the most movable bridges anywhere inthe world. Chicago is a bridge city. During the railway era, Chicago had the busiest railway center in the world. It was called the Hub of The Wheel for North America. As the world moved to the sky,

Chicago held the title of the busiest airport in the world up until only a few years ago, making it aHub of the World. With 77 million passengers last year alone it is now second only to Atlanta. Sinceits inception, Chicago has been a bridge for the United States and the world. It has been both aconnecting point as well as a destination to nearly every nation. Perhaps this is one of Gods dreamsfor this city. May God make Chicago a connecting point where the people of the world can expe-rience relational reconciliation and the shared wealth of each others gifts. May He give the churcha gift of hospitality and the ability to host these nations with compassion, honor, and His heart.

Youth With A Mission is an international movement of Christians from many denominations dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world. Also known as YWAM (pronounced WYE-wam), our calling is to know God and to make Him known. Back when we began in 1960, our main focus was to get youth into short-term mission work and to give them opportuni-ties to reach out in Jesus name. Today, we still focus on youth, and we also involve people of almost every age (even many people who choose to spend their retirement in activeservice). Our many ministries t into three main categories: evangelism, training and mercy ministry. We are currently operating in more than 1000 locations in over 149 countries, with astaff of nearly 16,000.
