Preparing for Sunday. . .

“A Walk on the Waves”

Matthew 14:22-33

The disciples thought they had their

miracle for the day. Jesus had taken two

small fish and five loaves and fed a

crowd of thousands. The disciples had

plenty of stories to tell one another as

they got into the boat and head to the

other side of the lake. As they tell their

stories a wind stirs and the seas turn

rough. These are experienced fishermen

but they are nervous. Their concern

grows to terror when they see a figure

walking toward them. Jesus quickly

identifies himself and then invites Peter

to join him.

We’ll put ourselves in the story this

Sunday and consider Jesus’ invitation.

Do we stay in the wind-swept boat or do

we take A Walk on the Waves?

Congratulations! We did it! This past Sunday we

reached our goal of $5,000 for the Kids Against

Hunger Project! We will now be able to purchase

enough food for 20,000 meals. I am very proud of our

accomplishment, especially the enthusiasm our children have shown

in giving their offerings. The next step will take place on Saturday,

September 27th. The folks at Kids Against Hunger will bring the food

and supplies to Lumberton and as a part of Inasmuch United we will

prepare the meal bags. Once the meals are prepared they will be

shipped to people in our country and throughout the world who need a

good, nutritious meal. We will also keep a portion of the meals and

distribute them to Robeson County agencies such as Lumberton

Christian Care and the Church and Community Center.

As I mentioned above, the Kids Against Hunger project will be a part

of Inasmuch United. FBC has a rich history with Inasmuch. We were

one of the first churches to do a project and we have held a project

every year for over fifteen years. We are now one of the first to

conduct an Inasmuch United project. The “United” is a reaching out to

our neighboring churches and inviting them to join us in the projects.

Last year, Godwin Heights Baptist, First Presbyterian, Chestnut Street

and Asbury United Methodist Churches participated and the day was a

great success. This year, the list of partnering churches has grown

(and seems to be growing each week) so we are looking forward to a

truly “kingdom day” of men and women and boys and girls from

many traditions serving and sharing our one Lord.

The genius of the Inasmuch movement is that every follower of Christ

has something they can do to offer compassion to others. You may not

be able to tote firewood or you may not feel comfortable visiting in a

nursing facility, but there is something you can do to offer the love of

Christ. I hope you have marked Saturday, September 27th on your

calendar as a day you will use your God given talents to help a

neighbor in need. And while you have your calendar out, please mark

Wednesday, October 8th as a day to hear more about how God is

using Inasmuch. Dr. David Crocker, Executive Director of

Inasmuch, will be our Missions Banquet speaker that evening. David

appreciates FBC’s commitment to Inasmuch and what we have

accomplished through the years. I am sure you will enjoy what he

will share.

On a final note, marking your calendar is only the first step in

participating in Inasmuch. You also need to sign up for the project

you want to participate in. Signing up is crucial to organizing the

logistics of each project. We will have sign up sheets available soon,

so please help us insure the success of the day.

Peace,

David
