60 OFFiCERs DEDiCatED tO tRaFFiC saFEty EnFORCE-MEntgov.ca - Saskatchewan people will be safer on provincial roadways with the introduction of two new Dedicat-ed Traffic Safety Enforcement Units. Each unit will consist of 30 officers, 15 from existing provincially funded positions and 15 new officers funded by SGI. The two units will begin op-erating in central and southeast Sas-katchewan. “New legislation with a focus on harsher penalties for impaired driv-
ing, distracted driving and excessive speed takes effect in the province on June 27,” Minister responsible for SGI Donna Harpauer said. “Strong and visible enforcement are essential to make the new legislation effective.” “Saskatchewan has one of the worst rates of injury and collisions on high-ways,” Corrections and Policing Min-ister Christine Tell said. “With 60 more officers dedicated to enforcing the new laws, drivers will have addi-tional encouragement to change be-haviours that could result in a traffic collision, making our roads safer for

all road users.” Under government’s targeted po-licing initiative, 30 of the 125 existing police positions will be dedicated to traffic safety. This aligns with the mu-tually agreed upon priorities between the government and provincial police leaders. The RCMP will dedicate 25 officers and the Saskatoon Police Ser-vice will provide five officers. “Increased traffic safety of our road-ways is critical to ensure the safety of our citizens,” RCMP Division As-sistant Commissioner Brenda But-terworth-Carr said. “Our provincial traffic safety strategy is focused on fostering key partnerships, creating public awareness, and enhancing en-
forcement efforts. At the end of the day, we are all working toward the common goal of keeping our road-ways safe.” “The Dedicated Traffic Safety En-forcement Units will use data and analysis to focus on a number of be-haviors that cause traffic fatalities,” Saskatoon Police Service Chief Clive Weighill said. “These focuses will include impaired driving, distracted driving, excessive speed and intersec-tion safety.” The Dedicated Traffic Safety En-forcement Units were developed as a result of two recommendations from the Saskatchewan Legislature all-par-ty traffic safety report.

A newlywed farmer and his wife were visited by her mother, who immedi-ately demanded an inspection of the place. The Farmer had genuinely tried to be friendly to his new mother-in-law, hoping that it could be a friendly, non-antagonistic relationship. To no avail, she kept nagging them at every opportunity, demanding chang-es, offering unwanted advice and making life unbearable to the farmer and his new bride. While they were walking through the barn, the farmer’s mule suddenly reared up and kicked the mother-in-law in the head, killing her instantly. At the funeral service a few days later, the farmer stood near the casket and greeted folks as they walked by. The pastor noticed that whenever a man would whisper something to the farmer, he would nod his head yes and say something. Whenever a man walked by and whispered to the farmer, howev-er, he would shake his head, no and mumble a reply. Very curious as to this bizarre behavior, the pastor later asked the farmer what that was all about. The farmer replied, “The women would say, ‘What a terrible tragedy’ and I would nod my head and say, ‘Yes, it was.’ The men would ask, ‘Can I borrow that mule?’ and I would shake my head and say, ‘Can’t. It’s all booked up for a year.’

FOR RELEASE MONDAY, JUNE 2, 2014
BY FRANCIS DRAKE
What kind of day will tomorrow be? To find out what the stars say, read the fore-cast given for your birth sign.
For Tuesday, June 3, 2014ARIES(March 21 to April 19)This is a wonderful, creative day!
Trust your creative impulses. Socializewith others, work with arts and crafts, and enjoy playing with children.
TAURUS(April 20 to May 20)You will want to hang out at home
today. You might like to spend the timealone, to relax and be introspective; oryou might want to relate to family mem-bers. Your choice.
GEMINI(May 21 to June 20)This is a lovely day for short trips,
conversations with others, especiallysiblings and relatives, plus doingerrands. You are eager to talk to others. However, avoid important decisions andpurchases.
CANCER(June 21 to July 22)Although your focus might be on
financial matters today, this is a poor dayfor important decisions. It’s also a poorday for major expenditures and pur-chases. Forewarned is forearmed.
LEO(July 23 to Aug. 22)Today the Moon is in your sign, which
makes you more emotional than usual. However, it also can bring you a bit ofextra good luck! Yay me!
VIRGO(Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)You will enjoy some quiet time today
if you get a chance to squeeze this in.Being high-viz can be exhausting. Try toget some rest.
LIBRA(Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)A conversation with a female acquain-
tance or colleague could be significanttoday. It will be easy for both parties tobe honest and genuine.
© 2014 King Features Syndicate, Inc.
SCORPIO(Oct. 23 to Nov. 21)Personal details about your private life
might be made public today, especiallyin the eyes of people in authority. Just beaware of this in case you have to dosome damage control.

daily routine. Go someplace you’venever been before. Travel if you can.Enjoy talking to people from differentbackgrounds.
CAPRICORN(Dec. 22 to Jan. 19)Although you might be focused on
details regarding shared property, insur-ance matters, inheritances and such, delay important decisions until tomor-row. Use today to do your homeworkand get your facts straight.
AQUARIUS(Jan. 20 to Feb. 18)Because the Moon is opposite your
sign today, you will have to go more thanhalfway when dealing with others. (Justbe your usual charming self.)
PISCES(Feb. 19 to March 20)Despite your wish to get better orga-
nized and be efficient today, you mightbe plagued with delays and shortages.Just cope as best you can.
YOU BORN TODAY You are gener-ous and warmhearted, which is why youcare about the underdog. You are wittyand verbally adroit. Because you have astrong need to communicate to others, many of you are writers, poets, actorsand performers. This is a time of explo-ration, growth and learning. Imagineyourself like the bud of a plant. Do nottake action — not yet.

This day in HistoryJun 3, 1989:
Crackdown at tiananmen begins
With protests for democratic reforms en-tering their seventh week, the Chinese gov-ernment authorizes its soldiers and tanks to reclaim Beijing’s Tiananmen Square at all costs. By nightfall on June 4, Chinese troops had forcibly cleared the square, killing hundreds and arresting thousands of demonstrators and suspected dissidents. On April 15, the death of Hu Yaobang, a former Communist Party head who supported democratic reforms, roused some 100,000 stu-dents to gather at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square to commemorate the leader and voice their discontent with China’s authoritative govern-ment. On April 22, an official memorial service for Hu Yaobang was held in Tiananmen’s Great Hall of the People, and student representatives carried a petition to the steps of the Great Hall, demanding to meet with Premier Li Peng. The Chinese government refused the meeting, lead-ing to a general boycott of Chinese universities across the country and widespread calls for democratic reforms. Ignoring government warnings of suppression of any mass demonstration, students from more than 40 universities began a march to Tiananmen on April 27. The students were joined by workers, intellec-tuals, and civil servants, and by mid-May more than a million people filled the square, the site of Mao Zedong’s proclamation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. On May 20, the government formally declared martial law in Beijing, and troops and tanks were called in to disperse the dissidents. However, large numbers of students and citizens blocked the army’s advance, and by May 23 government forces had pulled back to the outskirts of Beijing. On June 3, with negotiations to end the protests stalled and calls for democratic reforms escalating, the troops received orders from the Chinese government to seize control of Tiananmen Square and the streets of Beijing. Hundreds were killed and thousands arrested. In the weeks after the government crackdown, an unknown num-ber of dissidents were executed, and hard-liners in the government took firm control of the country. The international community was outraged by the incident, and economic sanctions imposed by the United States and other countries sent China’s economy into decline. By late 1990, however, international trade had resumed, thanks in part to China’s release of several hundred imprisoned dissidents.

quite obvious,” the old man replied, “my other leg is fine, and it’s the exact same age!”

New phone app.You know there is a lot of
money to be made by developing a useful phone app.
With the fitness craze and everyone being weight
conscious I put my brain cells to work on the project.
I want to announce the Newest phone app available for track-
ing progress in your fitness pro-gram. It is called the Personal
Scale App. This is how it works. You program your I-phone or Droid with my new app. Place it on a hard surface like a tile floor and then stand on it. The phone will record your current
weight and display it on the screen. My only problem is it
only seems to work once.
