MODERN DAY SLEEP AILMENT: ‘SLEEP-TEXTING’ctv.ca - While smartphone owners use their devices to text and email throughout the day, some people are taking their addictions to new heights and texting while sleeping, reports say. A phenomenon called “sleep-tex-ting” is on the rise, with sleep disor-der specialists reporting that more and more people are texting several times a night while they’re asleep, ac-cording to CBS New York last week.WebMD writes that teens are espe-
cially at risk of “sleep-texting,” with more and more kids reaching for the phones during the night, sending texts, and waking up with no recol-lection of what took place. “Four o’clock in the morning, 3 o’clock in the morning -- it would just be a sentence of jumbled-up stuff,” sleep-texter Megan told CBS New York. “I guess I got up and texted, and went back to bed, but I don’t remem-ber it.” Aside from the risk of sending bi-zarre texts to your contacts, sleep-tex-

ting isn’t good for your health in that it interrupts deep, restful REM sleep, experts say. “Sleep is a very important restorative process,” Dr. Josh Werber, a sleep and snoring specialist, told US News. “And when we’re not fully engaged in it, and not getting the amount we need, we’re not having the same restorative effect on our brains -- and that affects our cognitive ability the next day.” Best way to resolve the problem? Experts recommend shutting off your smartphone before bed or even moving your devices out the bedroom entirely. Also wean yourself off using gadgets in the evenings, in that research has shown that light-emitting screens from tablets and smartphone can suppress the release of the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin and enhance alertness, making it more difficult to sleep.

YOU BORN TODAY You identifywith the common person – the man onthe street. This is why you’re aware ofinequities in society and the suffering ofthose who are deprived. Some of you arepragmatic about this; most of you areidealistic and search for ways to improvesocial conditions. You care. This year achange might take place, perhaps as sig-nificant as something that occurredaround 2004.

On This Day in History: 1980: 10-year-old with cancer motivates Terry Fox
In his trek across Canada, Terry Fox has met hockey stars and ac-tors, CEOs and even the prime minister. But it’s a ten-year-old boy with cancer that impresses him most. In Terrace Bay, Ont., Terry meets Greg Scott, who also lost a leg to bone cancer and was un-dergoing chemotherapy. Recalling his own cancer treatments, the tearful runner tells onlookers that it’s people like Greg, dealing with cancer, who are the real heroes.
• Greg Scott was a young all-star baseball player who, like Terry, had lost a leg to bone cancer. Greg was from Welland, Ont., and had met Terry when he ran through Hamilton. Terry frequently inquired about Greg’s health, and the boy flew with his family up to Terrace Bay to see Terry again. He spent several days with Terry.
• Despite losing a leg, Greg Scott was able to ride a bicycle, and trailed behind Terry Fox. In his diary, Terry described it like this: “Greg rode his bike behind me for about six miles and it has to be the most inspirational moment I have had! At night we had a beau-tiful reception in Terrace Bay. I spoke about Greg and couldn’t hold back the emotion.”
• Greg was a good swimmer. Terry wasn’t, having swam only twice since he lost his leg. At Jackfish Lake, Greg and Terry jokingly test-ed the water with their artificial legs, then took them off and went swimming with the whole Marathon of Hope entourage, to the de-light of the reporters. Terry frequently thought about Greg during the remainder of his run.
• The pastoral moment had a sombre conclusion. After the swim, Terry Fox pulled Toronto Star reporter Christie Blatchford and qui-etly told her, “Greg’s not as lucky as me. He’s got it again. They found a spot of cancer again on his lung.”
• Greg Scott died at age 11 at his parents’ home in Welland, Ont., on Aug. 11, 1981 -- six weeks after Terry Fox died. Greg’s father Rod said the boy died unafraid and confident “he’d be seeing Terry again.”
• If running with Greg Scott was the most inspirational day of the trip, the following day was the most deflating. That night, Terry read an article from New Westminster, B.C. columnist Doug Smith which alleged that Terry drove across part of Quebec instead of running. “I nearly blew up!” Terry wrote in his diary. “Broke my heart! I have a saddened and weakening attitude toward the media and press.”
• The report claimed that, “He ran only 150 of the 700 miles from Gaspé Peninsula to Montreal. He did the rest by van, his reception in La Belle Province being so poor, and then he ran around Montreal to complete the equivalent mileage.” The story was false: Terry insisted on not even missing a foot of the distance. A retraction was printed, but the resentment remained.

A guy was driving when a policeman pulled him over. He rolled down his
window and said to the officer, “Is there a problem, Officer?”
“No problem at all. I just observed your safe driving and am pleased to award you a $5,000 Safe Driver Award. Congratula-tions. What do you think you’re going to
do with the money?” He thought for a minute and said, “Well,
I guess I’ll go get that drivers’ license.” The lady sitting in the passenger seat said to the policeman, “Oh, don’t pay
attention to him - he’s a smartass when he’s drunk and stoned.”
The guy from the back seat said, “I TOLD you guys we wouldn’t get far in a
stolen car!” At that moment, there was a knock from the trunk and a muffled voice said, “Are
we over the border yet?”

FUNNY AND INTERESTING FACTS www.bootstrike.com Please note that some of the ‘facts’ below have been proven false myths. An example is the duck’s echo which does not echo (but proved that it does).
• The pet food company Ralston Purina recently introduced, from its subsidiary Purina Philippines, power chicken feed designed to help roosters build muscles for cockfighting, which is popular in many areas of the world.• According to the Wall Street Journal, the cockfighting market is huge: The Philippines has five million roosters used for exactly that.• Gopher snakes in Arizona are not poisonous, but when frightened they may hiss and shake their tails like rattlesnakes.• The duckbill platypus can store as many as six hundred worms in the pouches of its cheeks.• The lifespan of a squirrel is about nine years.• North American oysters do not make pearls of any value.• Human birth control pills work on gorillas.• Many sharks lay eggs, but hammerheads give birth to live babies that look like very small duplicates of their parents. Young hammerheads are usually born headfirst, with the tip of their hammer-shaped head folded backward to make them more streamlined for birth.• Gorillas sleep as much as fourteen hours per day.
Two explorers, camped in the heart of the African jungle, were discussing their expedi-
tion. “I came here,” said one, “because the urge to travel was in my blood. City life bored me, and the smell of exhaust fumes on the high-
ways made me sick. I wanted to see the sunrise over new horizons and hear the flutter of birds that never had been seen by man. I wanted to leave my footprints on sand unmarked before I came. In short, I wanted to see nature in the raw. What about you?” “I came,” the second
man replied, “because my son was taking saxophone lessons.”
