...Your.Daily.Fix.................Province mulls creation of Prize-fighting commissioncbc.ca - The provincial government may get into the fighting ring as officials con-sider the pros and cons of establishing a combative sports commission. The body would regulate a number of fighting sports and allow for more profes-sional-level events in Saskatchewan. Dennis Page, a Saskatoon trainer and former boxer, is keen to see organized mixed martial arts events in the city. However, without a sanctioning body, prize events are out of bounds. Page said that puts limits on the sport. “There are a lot of athletes in Saskatch-
ewan,” Page told CBC News Thursday. “A lot of boxers, martial arts practitioners and those guys, they can’t practice their craft and that’s very unfortunate.” Provincial officials are looking at a com-mission that would regulate and govern professional fights, including mixed mar-tial arts, wresting, kick boxing and judo. “We feel the safety of athletes is a num-ber one priority in Saskatchewan,” Mela-nie Bauman, a policy analyst with the pro-vincial ministry that handles sports and recreation, said. “It’s important to have high caliber regulations and standards for such events.” Currently in Canada there are four

provinces and 10 municipalities that have combative sports commissions. The province is considering if Saskatch-ewan should have one provincial commis-sion or allow for municipal commissions. Page, who is working with a number of businesses and individuals keen on the
fighting sports, says he prefers a city run commission. Saskatoon, however, has rejected the no-tion raising concerns about liability. Provincial officials said their examina-tion of the issue is ongoing.

Braving the WinD by Paul MacNeilAbout 150 young athletes took part in the Whitemud Sectional Track and Field Meet at Shaunavon on Wednesday, May 22. Schools from Eastend, Frontier, Consul, Val Marie and Shaunavon were represented at the meet. Participants endured some extremely high winds that forced organizers to move the high jump event indoors. Weather conditions were even worse the next day during the Roll-ing Hills Sectional meet. That event featured athletes from Swift Current Comp, O. M. Irwin, Stewart Valley, Gull Lake, Herbert, Hodgeville, Wymark, Waldeck, Vanguard and Ponteix. Officials will be hoping for bet-ter weather conditions this Wednesday (May 29) when Shaunavon hosts the SWAC Dis-trict Track and Field Championships. As many as 500 athletes, coaches and officials are expected to attend the event.

This Day in history - may 27th1999: Julie Payette’s historic voyage to space
The world is watching on May 27, 1999, as astronaut Julie Payette makes aerospace history as the first Canadian to participate in an International Space Station (ISS) as-sembly mission. The Montreal native and six other astro-nauts are aboard the space shuttle Discovery as part of the STS-96 mission to perform the first manual docking of the shuttle to the ISS. During the mission the crew will also deliver four tons of supplies, also making Payette the first Canadian to board the space station. Payette’s family and other Canadians, including many school children, have gathered at Cape Canaveral, Fla. to show their support and watch the historic liftoff. In this CBC-TV clip, they share their enthusiasm and curiosity about the mission and revere Payette for inspiring a young-er generation of Canadians to explore “the wonders of the world beyond.”
Did you Know?• Payette earned an engineering degree from McGill Uni-versity in 1986 and worked at IBM Canada and BNR/Nortel, specializing in computer systems, natural language processing, automatic speech recognition and interactive technology in space. • In 1992, after receiving 5,330 applications, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) chose Payette and three others to be-come astronauts. During her training, Payette learned Rus-sian, obtained her commercial pilot’s license and military pilot captaincy, and logged 120 hours aboard a reduced gravity aircraft. • In 1996, she was accepted into the NASA Astronaut Can-didate Training. After completing the two-year program, Payette worked on space robotics for the NASA Astronaut Office. • The STS-96 mission travelled more than six million kilometres in nine days, 19 hours and 13 minutes.• Payette is also a classically trained musician and has performed with Montreal’s Orchestre symphonique, the Piacere Vocale in Basel, Switzerland, and Toronto’s Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra.

rsm Bio-Blitz surveY liKelY to Discover neW sPecies in sasKatcheWangov.ca - Researchers will look to find other species similar to the Sweat bee (Agapostemon texanus), a common visitor to summer flowers of Saskatche-wan. In what is undoubtedly the largest wildlife survey ever conducted in Sas-katchewan, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM) is launching its Bio-Blitz project this week. RSM scientists and several teams of summer students will be fanning out over southwest Saskatchewan for this summer-long project to find and capture as many different species of insects, reptiles and small mammals as they can. A main focus of this project will be to find and identify species of native bees and other pollinators, and establish a baseline for monitoring how animals respond to changes in the landscape. “Compared to other provinces, there is a pretty significant gap in our knowl-edge about Saskatchewan’s native species, and this survey will go a long way toward closing that gap,” RSM Chief Curator Dr. Ray Poulin said. “The scope of this survey makes it one of the most comprehensive ever undertaken in Can-ada. We fully expect to find many species that are new records for Saskatche-wan, and quite possibly species new to science.” Scientists and students will carry out the fieldwork from five base camps. The surveys will focus on some of the more unique areas of the grasslands re-gion including the Big Muddy Valley, Killdeer Badlands, Great Sand Hills, Sas-katchewan Landing Provincial Park and a number of locations in the Cypress Hills. The survey will not focus on well-known wildlife species, but instead on the vast diversity of insects and other invertebrates and smaller animals that call Saskatchewan home. Support for this study comes from Saskatchewan Parks, Saskatchewan Wild-life Federation, Canadian Agriculture Adaptation Program, the Canadian Mu-seum of Nature and the Friends of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum. To learn more about on-going research and scientific expertise at the RSM, visit www.royalsaskmuseum.ca/research-collections.
