The Introspection Recreation and Wellness Center is a gym and spa located in Durham, North Carolina. Factories and warehouses populate Durham’s city fabric. The adaptation of these buildings into other uses by way of gENTrificATioN has occured. The building form is derived by mirroring and flexing the courtyard geometry from the adjacent building. Various activity centers are housed within the spaces that wrap around the courtyard- acting as a cAcooN from the busy streets. The celebration of this reflection area emphasizes the notion of public and private realms. The concept of “rEfUgE ANd rEvEAl” is carried out from the building form to the rhythm of the building’s skin. Channel glass wraps around the building diffusing light into the building’s interior spaces while still allowing for privacy. Operable windows and vents are placed along the facades of the building to accomodate for ventilation in high activity areas.

The North Carolina State Viticulture and Demonstration Center doubles as a learning and leisure facility. The form of the building comes from an extended metaphor of being within the earth. The ExiSTiNg TUNNEl on the site is ExTrUdEd and serves as the major circulation path, connecting the parking lot [from accross the street] to the building, and ultimately to the private tasting room that hovers above Lake Raleigh. This path offers dirEcT ANd PASSivE iNTErAcTioN with the building and its facilities as the tunnel serves as a shared wall with the main building and offers views into the production facilities through angled skylights on the north side. The first floor houses the auditorium, permanent exhibition space, wine shop, prep kitchen, and restaurant. The bottom floor opens directly to the vines and houses wine production facilities as well as the library, classrooms, and offices.

oPUlENcE of SoUTHErN PiNES

Opulence of Southern Pines is a boutique that specializes in luxury bed and bath linens. The store relocated from its Cary location to a former women’s boutique. The new site is not only smaller, but now hosts Duxiana, a premier Swedish mattress company. The Cameron Village store presented multiple existing conditions from previous tenants that needed to be addressed. An existing “cloud” covered the HVAC systems in the ceiling, but offered no light, and tinted film on the glass protected goods from the Southern exposure, but left the space dim. The challenge was to MAxiMizE rETAil SPAcE, crEATE STorAgE oPPorTUNiTiES without building a back room, and oPTiMizE ANd SUPPlEMENT THE NATUrAl ligHT. Many of the fixtures were retained and or retrofitted for the new space. I prepared drawings for the fixture plan, lighting, electrical, and paint. I also managed the project during construction. The store opened in April 2013.

THE rEfiNEry SATElliTE SAloN

The Refinery is an Aveda hair salon. The business moved from a suburban location to a Main St. storefront, leaving its previous space vacant. Instead of selling the building, the owner proposed turning the space into a SATElliTE SAloN location to function as a day spa, offering services that the main salon does not provide. The owner stressed the idea of creating a practical solution for a flexible space that allowed for both social and private spa experiences. The ModUlE stations respond to that request by providing operable curtains.

Upholding the brANd idENTiTy and demonstrating the firm’s aesthetic through its own office design proved to be the most challenging task for this project. The small space accommodates three distinct zones;

an employee workspace, a conference room, and a flexible entryway/communal table.

These areas are defined by movable partitions that allow for multiple activities to occur

simultaniously when closed, and for a large social gathering space when opened.

The 120,000 square meter parcel is located between the third and fourth ring road in Beijing, China. This area of the city is often referred to the “cHiNESE SilicoN vAllEy” where many tech company headquarters are located. A large university is located to the north, and a competitive high school is located to the east. A historic courtyard house sits on the south-east corner of the site, adjacent to the pedestrian street that connects to the existing shopping mall. 200,000 square meters of unsuccesful retail space occupies the basement level. Creating a compelling retail strategy with an innovative architectural expression revives and activate the parcel. Due to the size of the site, creating three activity nodes that respond to the immediate surroundings and open up the basement level allows for increased flow through the development. Since TEcHNology coNNEcTS THE PAST To THE PrESENT ANd fUTUrE, this concept is expressed through the overall programming.
