Who knew rich and glamor-ous celebrities had so many hush-hush prob-

lems? Well, maybe they do in real life and maybe they don’t, but they sure keep “Ray Donovan’s” eponymous anti-hero busy. Last season’s finale episode included some uncommonly high notes for Hollywood’s problem solver and his rather dysfunctional family, but those sweet moments are fleeting. Catch the season 5 premiere of “Ray Donovan,” airing Sunday, Aug. 6, on Showtime.

Among the fictional elite, Ray Donovan (Liev Schreiber “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” 2009) is the guy you call if you need an unsa-vory problem dealt with quickly and quietly. A native of South Bos-ton, he pulled himself up from his blue-collar roots to mingle expertly with the glitterati as he goes about his shady work making their prob-lems discreetly disappear. He’s a firm family man at heart, though the various and sundry members of the Donovan clan are constantly clashing against one another.

The new season sees Ray turn-ing his attention back to his celeb-rity fixer firm, after season 4 shift-ed focus to an ongoing crime plot line. A major client this year is played by a major talent: look for Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (“Thelma & Louise,” 1991) in a re-curring role in season 5.

Things were looking good for the Donovans at the end of last season. Ray avoided prison, and we were even granted an unusu-ally lighthearted scene of him playing video games with his kids. His wife, Abby (Paula Malcomson, “Deadwood”), announced that her cancer is gone, and that she wants the two of them to make a fresh start, while his daughter, Bridget (Kerris Dorsey, “Brothers & Sisters”), was accepted into NYU.

Don’t assume the good times will carry on throughout the new season, though. The cast and showrunners aren’t saying much about what happens this season, but, as Schreiber told Collider, “It’s a very dark year for Ray.” He ex-panded on this in a promo clip:

“Fairly early in the season, something very profound and big has changed in Ray’s life — some-thing I think is going to really shock a lot of people — and the impact of that on this family, and Ray himself, is pretty heavy.”

Schreiber, a presence both on the stage and screen, has earned a good deal of recognition for his role over the past four seasons. He’s received four Golden Globe nods and three Emmy nomina-tions, the most recent of which could very well turn into a win in September.

It’s not just Schreiber who has seen success from the show. “Ray Donovan” opened to record-breaking numbers, becoming Showtime’s biggest premiere of all time. It’s won a Critics’ Choice Television Award, a Golden Globe and an Emmy, among its many nominations, and averaged 1.2 million viewers last season.

The well-known cast is one ma-jor draw of the show, with Schreiber being just one of a num-ber of big-name actors. Oscar win-

ner Jon Voight (“Mission: Impossi-ble,” 1996) plays Mickey Dono-van, Ray’s abusive father who turns up in the first episode after 20 years in prison. Though mur-derous, selfish and contemptible, Mickey is also charismatic and charming, and the character is a real fan favorite.

Eddie Marsan (“Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell”) and Dash Mihok (“The Day After Tomor-row,” 2004) play Ray’s two broth-ers, Terry and Bunchy Donovan, who both have their own personal struggles to deal with throughout the series. Pooch Hall (“The Game”) rounds out the family as Daryll Donovan, Ray’s half-brother and Mickey’s son from an affair, who now works for Ray.

Each season has seen its share of talent among the guest stars

and supporting cast as well. The likes of Elliott Gould (“Ocean’s Eleven,” 2001), Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Ann-Margret (“Grumpy Old Men,” 1993), Ian McShane (“Deadwood”) and Lisa Bonet (“The Cosby Show”) have graced the roster of supporting cast members, and there are some big names on deck for season 5 as well.

The biggest of these is surely the ubiquitous Sarandon. The award-winning acting power-house has held well over 100 roles between TV and film since launch-ing her career in the early ‘70s, and the list of accolades attached to her name is dizzying.

She’s sure to be another feather in “Ray Donovan’s” already well-feathered cap this season. She joins the cast as mogul Samantha

Winslow, the legendary head of a motion picture studio, who em-ploys Ray’s “fixing” services.

“Susan Sarandon plays some-one who Ray comes to work for, who has a very, very, very pro-found effect on shifting Ray’s life,” Schreiber revealed in the Collider interview. Sarandon added to this in a Showtime promo: “They both are kind of outside the law, and so, she has a secret that brings Ray into her life.”

“We’re really dependent on story being generated by guest stars,” showrunner David Hol-lander told the Hollywood Report-er. “There is no big bad guy that Ray has to fight year in and year out, and there is no procedural el-ement of whodunit. So we use new characters to bring in what we feel the zeitgeist is.”

Summer update: It may be on summer break right now, but with one of its most talked about sea-sons in years behind it, “Saturday Night Live” isn’t taking the season off. The sketch comedy show’s lon-gest-running bit hits TV screens for a four-week prime-time run starting Thursday, Aug. 10, on NBC.

The half-hour “Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update” reunites the hosts from the shorter “SNL” version, with anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che sitting behind the news desk and poking fun at the week’s headlines. Other “SNL” cast members are also due to make appearances, lending their own brands of humor to the “newscast.”

This isn’t the first time that Weekend Update has been spun off into its own series. Its first appear-ance as a prime-time special was in the autumn of 2008 under the name “Saturday Night Live Week-end Update Thursday,” and after a three-episode run it was renewed for a second mini-season the fol-lowing year. It later returned during 2012’s election for two episodes of electoral joshing.

So why has Weekend Update been spun off into its own series yet again? Probably because the last season of “Saturday Night Live” brought in the highest ratings the show has seen in years, a feat often attributed to the show’s sharp spoofs of the current political situation in Washington.

Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, backed that up in a statement announcing the summer series: “‘SNL’ is having its best season in a quarter of a centu-ry — how many shows can say that?! — so we didn’t want them to take the summer off,” he said in the statement.

Weekend Update has been with “SNL” since its very first episode way back in 1975 — the only still-surviving sketch to have that honor. Its hosts may have changed over the years, but its popularity has al-ways remained strong — strong enough to warrant its own prime-time series. “Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update” premieres Thurs-day, Aug. 10 on NBC.

A new possession: “The Exor-

cist” is expanding its cast. The Fox series, which is slated to return for a second season Friday, Sept. 29, has added a versatile actor to its al-ready impressive roster.

John Cho has joined the super-natural drama, bringing his diverse acting range to the critically loved

series. Cho has been a movie star for years, starring as Sulu in “Star Trek” (2009) and as Harold in “Har-old & Kumar Go to White Castle” (2004) and their respective sequels. He’s no stranger to television either, having starred in the short-lived 2014 ABC sitcom “Selfie,” NBC’s “Go On” and the sci-fi drama “FlashForward.”

Cho won’t be the only new face on screen when “The Exorcist” re-turns. With the first season’s plot more or less wrapped up, most of its characters — and thus, actors — will not be in season 2. Geena Davis (“Thelma & Louise,” 1991), Hannah Kasulka (“The Fosters”), Alan Ruck (“Spin City”) and Bri-anne Howey (“Scream Queens”) have all moved on.

In addition to Cho, Brianna Hil-debrand (“Deadpool,” 2016) has boarded the cast. Alfonso Herrera (“Sense8”), Ben Daniels (“House of Cards”) and Kurt Egyiawan (“Sky-fall,” 2012) are the sole returning series regulars.

“The Exorcist” serves as a sequel to the 1973 film of the same name. The first season dealt with a family suffering through a demonic influ-ence in their home, and the re-

sponses of three priests (Herrera, Daniels and Egyiawan) trying to deal with it. The new season moves on from that now-resolved story (hence the casting changes), with Cho playing a former child psychol-ogist whose foster child becomes targeted by something very evil.

“The Exorcist” returns to Fox for a second season this fall.

Dangerous weather: Some-

thing really needs to be done about the weather these days. Four sum-mers ago, in the windy year of 2013, the world was subjected to its first freak tornado with toothy predators caught up in it, and they’ve just been getting more and more intense every summer since.

That’s right, the Sharknado franchise is back with a fifth mov-ie. “Sharknado 5: Global Swarm-ing” splashes onto Syfy Sunday, Aug. 6, with a promise to “Make America bait again,” a riff on Pres-ident Trump’s campaign slogan.

Tara Reid (“American Pie,” 1999) and Ian Ziering (“Beverly Hills, 90210”) return as husband-and-wife duo April and Fin, roles they’ve starred in since the franchise’s very first film. As usual for the Sharkna-do films, they’re joined by a number of stars in their battle against the fiendish meteorological phenome-non, including ‘80s icon Fabio (“Zoolander”), Charo (“The Love Boat”), Gilbert Gottfried (“Alad-din,” 1992) and Chris Kattan (“Un-dercover Brother,” 2002) in signifi-cant roles.

Clay Aiken (“American Idol”), Olivia Newton-John (“Grease,” 1978), Tony Hawk (“Jackass: The

Movie,” 2002), Margaret Cho (“30 Rock”) and Poison

frontman Bret Mi-chaels all appear in cameos, while “Today” hosts Al Roker, Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb also make an appearance.

Q: My question is about “Criminal Minds: Suspect Be-havior.” The episode titled “Death by a Thousand Cuts, Part 1” aired May 25, 2011, and it was to be continued. However, I have never seen a Part 2, or conclusion of this episode. When was it aired, and how can I see it?

A: “Death by a Thousand Cuts” wasn’t actually a Part 1/Part 2 situation, it was a season finale, cliffhanger situation. And CBS never rescued it from the cliff.

“Criminal Minds: Suspect Be-havior,” the highly anticipated spinoff of the smash-hit crime procedural show “Criminal Minds,” was canceled after just one short season on the network. “Death by a Thousand Cuts” was its 13th and final episode.

It was highly anticipated not only for being the first spinoff of a hugely successful show, but be-cause it featured Oscar-winning film star Forest Whitaker — a huge get for TV at the time. But sadly even he couldn’t draw enough viewers to the show to make it worth CBS’s while.

The network didn’t give up on “Criminal Minds” as a franchise, though. The original aired its whopping 277th episode in May and has been renewed for a 13th season, set to air in the fall. And the network tried another spinoff in 2016, with “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.” That one beat its predecessor by making it through two seasons before be-ing axed.

This lack of success has been new territory for CBS, which had seemingly mastered the fran-chise model with earlier proce-dural hits “CSI” and “NCIS,” each of which has had multiple hit spinoffs.

Time will tell if CBS tries again to make a “Criminal Minds” spinoff work, or if it’ll just give up and dry its tears with all the mon-ey the “NCIS” spinoffs are cur-rently bringing in.

Q: I’m just catching up on

the most recent season of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” and was wondering about the guy

who plays Gina’s new boy-friend in the second-to-last episode of the new season. He looks so familiar.

A: The casting of Milton Boyle, Gina’s new boyfriend (and Charles’s cousin), is a clever bit of meta-humor by the writers — the identity of the actor himself is part of the joke.

Gina says at one point that he’s famous, but then admits that was a lie. Later, when he is re-vealed to be Charles’s cousin (but before he appears on screen), Charles says multiple times how ugly he is. When he finally shows up, near the end of the episode, he’s not ugly at all. He’s Ryan Phillippe.

Of course, that means that the actor is, in fact, famous, though the character isn’t. That’s the es-sence of meta-humor in TV: It’s a joke about the making of the show.

Phillippe is an established star, though perhaps not as big as he once was. In the late ‘90s, he was in demand and promised to be Hollywood’s next big thing, hav-ing starred in a string of teen hits such as “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (1997) and “Cruel Intentions” (1999). This is likely the source of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s” joke regarding his looks — he’s best remembered as a teen heartthrob.

He made the right moves after that, appearing in smaller roles in a couple of prestige dramas, namely “Gosford Park” (2001) and “Crash” (2004), both of which earned him multiple awards.

Nonetheless, he sort of fizzled afterwards — he’s worked fairly steadily but hasn’t drawn the at-tention he did in his earlier days.

That may be about to change, though, thanks to a move to TV. He’s starring in a new show on USA Network called “Shooter.” Though it’s new to the schedule, the show has actually been around for years, plagued by a long series of delays. It’s a pretty high-profile show, based on a popular 2007 film of the same name, which in turn is based on a book (“Point of Impact” by Ste-phen Hunter).

And of course, his brief turn in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” could turn in to a recurring thing. We’ll find out when show returns Sept. 26 on Fox.

Training begins: HBO presents a new season of “Hard Knocks: Training Camp,” premiering Tues-day, Aug. 8, on the specialty chan-nel. This season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are featured, and fans and rivals alike get an inside look at an NFL team as the players prog-ress through their summer training programs.

The show covers everything from training and preparations for the upcoming season to the personal and professional lives of the play-ers, coaches, staff and their families. Viewers are treated to front-row seats when it comes to position battles, inside jokes and, of course, the many pranks perpetrated by the players and staff.

HBO calls “Hard Knocks” the first sports-based reality series ever, and teams clamor for a chance to be featured (and reap the benefits

of the major publicity that goes along with it) every year. The Bucs were one of eight eligible teams for this year’s program, and the organi-zation is home to many remarkable personalities and stories. The team’squarterback, Jameis Winston, is in the midst of settling an uncomfort-able lawsuit, while Doug Martin, a running back, was suspended last season for failing a drug test. Both players seek to improve their im-age, both personally and profes-sionally, this season.

Viewers also get an inside look as Roberto Aguayo and Nick Folk vie for the kicker position. Plus, there is likely to be some drama when it comes to Brent Grimes’s wife, Miko, who is well known for being overly outspoken and coarse (especially on social media). It’s a summer series sports fans won’t want to miss: catch the premiere of “Hard Knocks: Training Camp With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers” Tues-day, Aug. 8, on HBO.
