Television shows come and goevery year. Some end upfading into obscurity, maybeliving on as little more than a fond(or not so fond) memory in a fewpeople's minds. A rare few shows,though, were so popular in theirheydays that they're still legendaryyears after they've gone off the airfor good.

"Dallas" is one of those legends.Over the span of its from 1978 to

1991, audiences were riveted by thisprime-time soap about the antics ofa disjointed family of Texan oiltycoons and ranchers. ThisWednesday, June 13, TNT aims torecapture the magic that made theoriginal series a success with thepremiere of a brand-new "Dallas."

It's the latest offering in a recentrun of revivals of popular showsfrom the past. Although several ofthese attempts to find newaudiences have been flops, such as2011's resurrection of "Charlie'sAngels," a few have succeeded infinding ratings success, most notably"Hawaii Five-0." This new "Dallas,"however, is not a reboot or a remakeof the series; instead, it's a sequel ofsorts.

The original series revolvedaround the Ewing family and theirlives on the family ranch outside ofthe titular city of Dallas. Viewerswere entranced by the drama,betrayals and sex that seemed to

consume the family members' liveson a weekly basis. The new serieschecks in with the Ewings decadeslater. The younger generation, whohad appeared as children during theoriginal, are now grown up andrunning the show alongside thefamily's older members.

Leading the new cast of charac-ters are Christopher and John RossEwing, the sons of the originalseries' Bobby and J.R., respectively.

Jesse Metcalfe steps into the roleof the Christopher Ewing. Fans of thefirst series will remember Christo-pher as a little boy, the son of theyoungest Ewing brother, Bobby. Theboy has grown up into an idealisticman with interests in environmen-talism and alternative energy --slightly ironic for one of the heirs toa petroleum company.

Metcalfe has appeared in numberof roles in both television and film,perhaps most memorably as hunkyyoung gardener John Rowland in"Desperate Housewives."

Starring opposite Metcalfe is JoshHenderson, in what may turn out tobe his breakout role. His band, Scene23, was the winner of the now-defunct WB show "Popstars 2" in2001, and from there he began acareer in acting. He's since appearedin several films, most notably "TheGirl Next Door" (2004) and "StepUp" (2006). Like his "Dallas" co-star,he also had a brief stint on"Desperate Housewives," astroubled teenager Austin McCann.

Henderson certainly has some bigshoes to fill. His character, John Ross

Ewing, is the now-adult son of theoriginal series' villainous J.R. J.R. wasa ruthless, womanizing and power-hungry man who ran Ewing Oil asunethically as he could get awaywith. John Ross has grown up to bea chip off the old man's block,bearing a stark contrast to hisethical cousin.

Fans of the old series will bedelighted to know that several ofthe original actors will be returningto their roles as the senior genera-tion of Ewings. Charlene Tiltonreturns as Lucy Ewing, who was atroubled and rebellious teenaged girlin the original series. Steve Kanalywill once again take on the role ofEwing half-brother Ray Krebbs.

Most notable is that LarryHagman will be reprising his role asJ.R., the man everyone loved to hate.Even two decades after "Dallas"went off the air, the man is still oneof television's most iconic villains.Even younger audiences that maynever have seen an episode of"Dallas" might still be familiar withthe show's most iconic plot line --the mystery of who shot J.R.

In the second season's finale, J.R.finally goes too far. After angeringmore people than he could count, heis brutally shot by an unseenassailant at the end of the episode,plunging into a coma and leavingaudiences asking, "Who shot J.R.?"They'd have to wait until the nextseason for the answer, which led tomonths of increasing buzz about theimpending third season.

If this sounds familiar, it'sprobably because another hit showhas staged its own twist on the plotline. In 1995, the animated hit "TheSimpsons" ended its sixth season

with the hated Mr. Burns being shotby an unseen assailant after turningeveryone in town against him. Justlike with "Dallas," fans were kept inthe dark until the following season'spremier, leading to a summer ofever-building hype. "The Simpsons"version had more fun with it,though, putting the incriminatingpistol in the hands of toddlerMaggie Simpson.

The play certainly paid off for"Dallas." When the would-beassassin (Kristin Shepard, who was

J.R.'s scheming sister-in-law andmistress, shot him in a fit of anger)was finally revealed in the episode"Who Done It?" audiences tuned inin droves. It shattered ratingsrecords, at the time easily snatchingthe title of the highest-rated televi-sion episode in U.S. history.

It remains to be seen if the newseries will mimic the success of itsparent, but the future is certainlylooking bright. The combination ofhunky young stars and much-lovedreturning favorites are conspiring tomake this sequel to the legendary"Dallas" this summer's must-watchnew show.

BACK TO THE FUTURE: Strapyourself in and prepare for warpspeed. The Planet Express crew isgetting back to work with thepremiere of the seventh of the hitanimated series "Futurama,"beginning with two new back-to-backepisodes.

Airing Wednesday, June 20, onComedy Central, the new episodespromise to give us the topical laughswith a 31st-century twist that hasmade the show a favourite withaudiences and critics alike.

"Futurama" focuses on Philip J. Fry(Billy West), a young 20th-centurydelivery boy who accidentally freezeshimself and wakes up a thousandyears later. He joins the crew at PlanetExpress, an interstellar deliverycompany, where he meets Leela (KateySagal), Bender (John DiMaggio), Amy(Lauren Tom), Hermes (Phil LaMarr)and his great-great-great-great-great-great nephew Professor Farnsworth(also voiced by West).

This season has a host of gueststars lined up and ready to lend theirvoice talents to the show. George Takei("Star Trek"), Patrick Stewart ("StarTrek: The Next Generation"), DanCastellaneta ("The Simpsons") andEstelle Harris ("Seinfeld") will all bemaking appearances.

In the first of back-to-backepisodes, guest star Wanda Sykes("The New Adventures of OldChristine") plays a vending machinewho gets into a parental mixup withBender. The follow-up episode teachesus about an ancient prophecy thatpredicts the end of the world in theyear 3012.

"Futurama" originally aired on Fox,

but ceased production in 2003. It livedon in syndication, on DVD and as fourfull-length, direct-to-DVD films. Due toits incredible popularity, it was broughtback to prime time on Comedy Centralin 2009.

The return of "Futurama" marksthe second time in recent years that acancelled show has made a comebackafter gaining a strong cult following.Another animated sitcom, "FamilyGuy," was resurrected in 2004 thanksto strong DVD sales and ratings whilein syndication. "Family Guy" wasoriginally cancelled after its thirdseason in 2001.

A BLOG WITH BITE: Movie and TVaudiences have been cozying up to theidea of thinking dogs and talking catsfor years. From the talking animals incountless animated films to thetouching antics of animals that speakto each other in live-action classicssuch as "Homeward Bound: TheIncredible Journey" (1993), Hollywoodhas humanized our furry companionstime and time again.

But in a sign of the times, it seems

that the pets are taking the next stepand are about to start taking over theblogosphere.

This fall, the Disney Channel willput a leash on man's best friend andwalk him into the Internet age with itsnewest comedy, "Dog With a Blog."

This family-friendly sitcom willfeature a canine twist. When newstep-siblings Tyler and Avery just can'tseem to get along, their parents buythem a dog in an attempt to bring thefeuding family together.

The family soon discovers that theirnew pet, Stan, is no ordinary dog --this animal can think, talk, and evenwrite his own online blog!

The story will be told from Stan'sfurry point of view, and it has somegreat young Disney talent lined up totickle our funny bones.

Blake Michael, one of the stars of"Lemonade Mouth" (2011) has beencast in the role of Tyler, alongside G.Hannelius ("Good Luck Charlie"), whowill be stepping into the role of Avery.

Stan himself will be played byKuma, a husky-golden retriever-border

collie mix, and voiced by Stephen Full("I'm in the Band").

After being rescued from a shelter,Kuma was trained by expert doghandlers at Good Dog Animals, acompany with more than 40 years ofexperience training dogs for the TVindustry.

Good Dog Animals has providedcanines for such shows as "ModernFamily," "A.N.T. Farm" and "Chuck."

HOME SWEET HOME: ABC's"Cougar Town" has found some newprowling grounds on cable. The serieswill premiere its fourth season earlynext year from a new home -- on TBS.ABC aired the show's Season 3 finaleepisode on Tuesday, May 29.

The cabler has also won the rightsto all of the previous episodes in theseries, so fans can tune in to TBS ifthey're in the mood for reruns.
