Money to help you while you studyStudying at uni is a personal investment – you’re investing time and effort in your future. There’s a financial cost, too, and at USC we understand that sometimes it can be a challenge to make it all work.

There’s lots of support to assist you financially, and it comes in all shapes and sizes.

In 2018, USC provided more than $2.5 million in scholarships and bursaries to students.

USC scholarships and bursaries celebrate different types of skills and support people from all kinds of backgrounds. A scholarship can provide financial support over the years you’re studying, or as a waiver of tuition fees. A bursary is usually a one-off payment, or payment instalments over two semesters of study.

Not only can they ease the financial pressure of going to uni and give you freedom to focus on your study, but some may also provide internship opportunities, so you can gain real work experience while you’re studying.

USC scholarships aren’t just for high achievers – scholarships and bursaries are also awarded to students who need financial assistance or who demonstrate other achievements, such as sporting excellence or community activities (like volunteering or fundraising). There are also scholarships for different areas of study, or relocation scholarships that support you in your move away from home.

They’re easy to apply for, too. You only need to submit one application form to be considered for the many USC scholarships and bursaries on offer. Apply now and find the support you need to rise, and shine.

STUDY OVERSEAS You don't have to choose between uni and travel. Spend one or two semesters abroad at one of more than 70 partner institutions, or take the opportunity to complete a placement or internship overseas.

There are a number of scholarships and grants available to help with the cost, so don’t let money hold you back from this amazing opportunity.

WHY STUDY OVERSEAS? • Improve your language skills

• Explore a new culture

• Gain valuable life skills

• Broaden your career options

• Enhance your employability

• Establish a global network of friends

• Gain credit towards your degree

TRAVEL OVERSEAS, EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT CULTURES AND GET A DEGREE – AT THE SAME TIME.

I booked my plane ticket to the other side of the world to study at Masaryk University in the Czech Republic.

My trip kicked off with an awesome Eurail experience around Europe. By train, I travelled to many countries including, Austria, Slovakia, Croatia, Germany, Belgium, France and Italy.

While studying at Masaryk University, there were lots of subjects to choose from that involved learning about Czech lifestyle and culture, and allowing me to gain credit towards my degree.

My time abroad gave me a new perspective on the world.

I watched the seasons change and experienced a white

Christmas. I learnt about new cultures and discovered more

about my own, and made friends all around the globe.

From watching the snow fall in Cesky Krumlov,

visiting the Christmas markets in Krakow, to relaxing in the

Budapest thermal baths, ice skating, to snow skiing, mountain hiking

and exploring old cities, studying abroad well and truly exceeded my

expectations.

If you commenced Year 11 in Queensland in 2019, you will be among the first in the state

to graduate Year 12 with an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) in replacement of

the current Overall Position (OP). From 2021 forward, the ATAR will be used for Year 12

students seeking admission to USC undergraduate degrees.

So, if you’re wondering which subjects to choose for your final years of high school to meet the prerequisite for your selected degree, the table below displays which subjects will meet the prerequisites for USC programs.

Be mindful: completing an applied subject like Essential

English or Essential Mathematics can contribute towards

ATAR eligibility, however applied subjects won’t meet

the subject prerequisites at USC. It’s recommended you

discuss your options with your school.

Prerequisite study areaFrom 2021: QCAA General Subjects A minimum grade of C in units 3 & 4

English English Literature English and Literature Extension English as an Additional Language

Mathematics for Education General Mathematics Mathematical Methods Specialist Mathematics

Mathematics for Engineering Mathematical Methods Specialist Mathematics

Science for Education Agricultural Science Biology Chemistry Earth and Environmental Science Marine Science Physics Psychology

Science for Occupational Therapy Biology Chemistry Health Physical Education Physics Psychology

If you don’t complete the relevant prerequisite subject at high school you may be able to complete a bridging course such as the Tertiary Preparation Pathway (TPP) to meet the prerequisite for your desired degree.

explainedAll USC programs include hands-on

training such as placements, industry

projects, fieldwork or professional work

experience. WIL gives you the chance

to put theory into practice, build skills

that employers look for in graduates,

establish job networks and find out what

it’s like to work in your area of study.

Some programs include overseas WIL

opportunities, too.

PREREQUISITES Prerequisites are subjects you must have studied at school to be eligible for entry into a program. If you haven’t studied the prerequisites at school, you might be able to meet them through other tertiary study or bridging/enabling courses. English (4,SA) means you have to have studied Senior English for 4 semesters and exited with a Sound Achievement or better. ‘Nil’ means there are no subject prerequisites, but you must still meet the minimum selection threshold and USC’s standard entry requirements. Some programs have additional entry requirements, too.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT OPTION An international student is any student who is not an Australian or New Zealand citizen,

Australian permanent resident or Australian Humanitarian Visa holder.

DURATION How long it will take you to complete the

program if you study full time (usually four courses per semester). If you choose

to study fewer courses per semester, it will take longer to complete your degree.

RECOMMENDED PRIOR STUDYThese are the subjects USC recommends you study at school to prepare for a program. These are ‘good to have’, but are not required for entry.

Kim PengellyBachelor of Business graduate. General Manager, QMusic.

“Like many people at 19, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to ’be when I grew up’. What I did know, was that I never wanted to work in a position that saw me watching the clock tick over 5pm.

“I decided to study Business to give me a broad set of skills which could be applied to a number of career pathways as my appetite and interests changed over time.

“As General Manager at QMusic, I manage the team internally as well as fulfil the role of Event Manager for all our events, including BIGSOUND – which is the largest music industry conference in the southern hemisphere – and Queensland Music Awards – a prolific celebration of Queensland songwriters.

“I’m proud of the fact that I have been able to work in positions that light the fire inside. My degree taught me discipline and a strong writing style, which gave me the tools to be able to communicate persuasively at all levels. This has given me the opportunity to obtain grants and funding for the organisations I have worked for, which has been a beneficial asset.”

Patrick SmithCurrent Bachelor of Creative Industries student.

“Through one of my courses I was able to do an internship with a startup company. This was an amazing experience as it gave me an opportunity to film videos and create content for the business.

“USC is awesome for encouraging group work and that makes it so much easier for creatives to build some solid friendships with people in a range of industries.

“I chose USC because of the flexibility and convenience, plus the staff have great experience in the creative industries. I am proud of the work I produce and the networks I am building here.”

Mathew WenzelCurrent Bachelor of Primary Education student.

“I applied to study at USC after a plan to work overseas fell through, creating an opportunity for me to focus on building a career instead of just getting a job.

“USC has provided me with a range of opportunities. I have been able to develop my academic skills, establish lifelong friendships with my peers, work alongside practising teachers and assist with some fantastic projects at the University, including USC’s makerspace.”

Rachel Sewell Bachelor of Primary Education graduate.

“I found the student-to-teacher ratio in the classes at USC to be fantastic and this in turn helped me to achieve good results throughout my degree.

“The highlight of my studies would definitely be the lecturers, for their continuous support and genuinely having the students’ best interests at heart.”

Just a few weeks after completing her degree, Rachel made a quick transition to become a teacher at Hervey Bay’s Pialba State School.

Georgia Keeshan Civil Engineering graduate. Coastal Engineer, Sunshine Coast Council

"I had a passion for finding out how and why things work, and I wanted to do a degree that guaranteed a job. I knew engineering had a wide range of employment and lifestyle opportunities and I listened to a talk about the program at USC’s Open Day. I decided to do it and study Civil Engineering.

“While studying I gained casual work at the council through one of my tutors. I knew a dozen students who also got work through USC connections. Then, I secured a full-time job here when I graduated.

“Now I work as a coastal engineer with the Sunshine Coast Council. As my work is usually in the tidal zone, where construction and maintenance are subject to approvals, I’m liaising with state and federal governmental agencies, council departments, community groups, customers and external contractors."

“I work indoors and outdoors, contributing to the sustainable growth of the region, coordinating projects and inspections of council infrastructure involving revetment walls, beach groynes, canal dredging, locks, weirs and sea walls.”

Peter NugentBachelor of Nursing Science graduate.

“After almost 20 years in the plumbing trade having the option to study Nursing Science at USC Fraser Coast gave me the opportunity to drastically rearrange my life.

“USC has given me the opportunity to grow as a person. With support, I was able to utilise the existing skills I had and use them to transition to a totally new career with ease.

“I am a very practical person, therefore the hands-on experience from placements was a chance to put the educational knowledge I gained into the work environment and confirmed where I saw myself working in the future.

“It seems surreal to think that so much has changed in just a few years and I started work as a registered nurse in Hervey Bay just a matter of weeks after graduating.”

Jenna PerryCurrently studying Nutrition and Dietetics.

“University was something that I had never considered. I spent lots of time travelling, which is when my passion for nutrition science and my desire to help close the health gap seen throughout Australia motivated me to seek further education.

“The program was not offered in my home state, so I decided to move to the Sunshine Coast and give university a red-hot crack! I entered through a Bachelor of Nutrition, then in my second year of study, I had the grades required to transfer to study dietetics.

"I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I love the atmosphere, supportive environment and sense of community that USC provides. It’s an environment that really fosters growth and resilience. The educators are always encouraging students to try their best, think critically and to always be curious about learning.”

Domonique DoyleBachelor of Social Science (Psychology) (Honours) graduate.

“Every day I use what I have learnt at USC. The theory and background information I studied prepared me with the knowledge and confidence required for practising as a provisional psychologist.

“I have been to a bigger university, but I felt like a number there. There is nothing better than finishing classes or studying for the day and driving a short distance to do a bushwalk, hike, or go to the beach. I think the relaxed lifestyle helped so much with getting my university work done, too.”

Michael JefferiesBachelor of Laws / Bachelor of Commerce graduate. Law Graduate, PricewaterhouseCoopers (based in Sydney office)“Australian Law Student of the Year” at 2018 Australian Law AwardsNew Colombo Plan Scholarship recipient

“I secured one of five summer clerkship roles in the PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Legal team in Sydney at the end of my second-last year of study. Upon finishing the clerkship, I was offered a graduate role to return to on a full-time basis after completing my degree.

“In my role I focus on Corporate Advisory work as part of PwC’s Legal Services network, which has more than 3,500 lawyers in more than 100 countries. This involves assisting clients, mostly large companies, with high-complexity matters ranging from mergers and acquisitions to capital markets transactions and corporate restructures.

“At USC, I was able to study abroad – which I’d highly recommend. There are even scholarships available to help cover some, or all, of the costs. I met so many great people in Singapore while having an amazing study experience through the New Colombo Plan. I was also an active participant in student life at USC through various student and leadership groups.”
