The history of NARA Machinery
Co. Ltd. began with the establish-
ment of NARA Shoten in 1924. The com-
pany’s employees have concentrated
on all forms and facets of “powder”
ever since. Having first modernised
powder processing in Japan, these
pioneers are now accepted as experts
worldwide.
Developed in 1925, the Jiyu Mill beca-
me the cornerstone of the product
range. This high-speed impact type
crusher was the first of its kind in
Japan. Extensively modified and
improved over the years, it is still in
production and distribution today.
NARA’s engineers have never lost their
enthusiasm for the development of
powder processing technology.
We are proud to say that NARA
Machinery’s successful organization
has enabled the company to play a key
role in the history of industrial powder
processing – a role that continues to
this day.
The technical know-how and pionee-
ring spirit of those early days, which
have been handed down from genera-
tion to generation, remain an essential
part of NARA’s corporate philosophy
today.

customer satisfactionWe are grateful to our customers for their
advice and suggestions. Customer satisfac-
tion is the central focus of our work, and
the entire team strives to achieve that
objective.
qualityThe quality of our products is our highest
priority. Feedback from our customers
confirms that consistently high quality is
the key to our success.
research and developmentNARA continuously engages in research
and development in the field of powder
technology. As a result, our products are
always up to date and specifically tailored
to satisfy today’s needs. And that is how
we make sure our products are able to
meet the latest customer demands.
The development of the pin mill laid the
cornerstone for our specialisation in
powder technology. The business was
expanded to include direct dryers in 1951
and the indirect “paddle dryer” was
developed in 1969. Today about 90 % of
the world’s SAP production is dried in
equipment of this type.
In the 1980s the company added the
Particle Design division which is particu-
larly noteworthy for its development of the
Hybridizer in 1985. This nano-scale system
makes it possible to combine particles
mechanically with other particles. Today
the company’s three divisions - Drying,
Milling and Particle Design – stand on
equal footing.

market is covered from the branch office in

In the Jiyu Mill, a rotor fitted with grinding pins rotates
inside a stator fitted with grinding pins. The raw material
enters via an inlet at the centre of the stator and the air
stream forces it outward in a radial direction. The material
is ground as it passes through the mill.
applicationsA wide range of applications in the chemical and pharmaceutical
industries for the production of synthetic resins, animal feed,
salts, fertilizer, minerals, raw materials used in papermaking, etc.
features• Universally applicable
• Generates very fine product in a very short time
• Easy particle size adjustment by altering hole diameter,
sieve and rotor speed and by changing the number and
shape of the grinding pins
• Low heat generation in the grinding chamber, and
therefore ideally suited for processing materials with a
low softening point
• For grinding raw materials mixed with water

The Cosmomizer is an impact mill with a built-in classifier. It uses
a dry grinding process to generate a fine product with a narrow
particle size distribution. The mill separates the pulverised raw
material into coarse and fine powder in the processing chamber.
Only the fines are discharged, the coarse particles are reground.
applicationsCalcium carbonate, talcum, kaolin, aluminium oxide, silicon,
nitrite, mica, magnesium oxide, ferrite, coal, carbon, synthetic
resins, pigments, animal feed, fertilisers, etc.
features• Uniform, fine product
• High reduction ratio
• High classification efficiency
• Easy disassembly and cleaning
• GMP configuration possible

microsThe main components of the MICROS wet mill are the hopper,
the main shaft rotating in the hopper and the several parallel
sub-shafts connected to that main shaft. Each sub-shaft is fitted
with ring-shaped grinding media. Pressed outward against the
hopper wall by centrifugal force while rotating, the grinding
rings pulverise the particles in the suspension.
applications• Inorganic substances (pigments, glass, magnetic tape
suspensions, carbon black, ceramics, salt)
• Organic substances (cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, spices,
sucralfate)
features• Wet grinding of particles to sub-micron size
• Narrow particle size distribution
• Processing of suspensions of different viscosities
• Ability to process particles ranging in size from a
few microns to 100 µm
• Trouble-free grinding of fibrous materials

applications• Drying and processing of fibre-reinforced plastics• Drying and treatment of starch, maize flour and other foodstuffs
and animal feed• Refinement of production waste and slurries• Tempering and crystallisation of copolymers• Germ reduction in foodstuffs• Drying of aluminium oxide and other inorganic substances• Heating, drying and cooling of calcium carbonate
application targets• Heating• Cooling• Drying• Crystallisation• Chemical reactions• Controlled tempering• Combined drying and cooling• Precise adjustment of product moisture• Substitution of organic solvents by water
features• Self-cleaning effect• Easy control• Low dust and odour generation• Minimal wear and tear, minimal cracking• Evaporation of bound and free water• Separation of solvents
principleThe Nara Paddle Dryer uses the principle of indirect heat transfer, where the product does not come in direct contact with the heating or cooling medium. The very large product contact surface area ensures extremely efficient heattransfer. In addition, the intermeshed motion of the paddles guarantees homogeneous, thorough and uninterrupted mixing of the material in continuous or batch operation.

media slurry dryerFor the production of ultrafine powders in the nano or micron range
from suspensions and solutions.
applications• Inorganic materials, e.g. aluminium oxide, calcium carbonate, carbon
black, glass powder, titanium oxide, kaolin
• Organic materials, e.g. emulsion resins, dyes, pigments, pharmaceuticals,
surfactants
features• Agglomerate-free dry products from suspensions and solutions*
• Nearly identical particle size distribution of products and starting materials*
• Outstanding thermal efficiency
• Low maintenance
• No atomisation unit necessary
• Compact design due to maximised heat transfer
• Open or closed-loop operation*within physical limits
principleHot air is injected to fluidize carrier media beads on a perforated bed. A
suspension is then fed into this bed. The swirling motion of the beads atomises
the suspension, pulverising it against the beads. The liquid part of the suspen-
sion is evaporated off and the dry powder is automatically discharged.

fluidized bed cross section of 1.77 m2 and up to 2 t/h water evaporation.

materials that require frequent product changeovers and cleaning.
applications• Synthetic resins (PVC, PP, ABS, MBS)
• Food
• Nutraceuticals (xylitol, amino acids)
• Active pharmaceutical ingredients
• Ceramics
features• Fast product changeover
• No residual product in the tower
• Easy cleaning by means of integrated Washing in Place system
• Completely automated operation possible
• Environmentally friendly operation through solvent recovery
principleDesigned for continuous operation, the Tornesh Dryer is a directly heated
dryer that leaves no powder in the drying tower at the end of a run.
The distinctive characteristic of this unit is the way the controlled air
supply enters through special perforated plates at the base and the side
of the tower. The directed air inlet circulates the hot air along the interior
of the tower housing.

nebulasizerThe NARA Nebulasizer optimises granules with respect to their particle
size distribution. The special grinding principle makes this continuous
standardisation possible for dry and wet granules. In so doing, the
device reduces the size of oversized agglomerates while fine particles
and dust particles are attached to larger agglomerates at the same time.
So the oversized particles are eliminated and the undersized particles
are reduced in a single step without resulting in the undesirable
overgrinding of particles. Subsequent screening is no longer necessary.
The Nebulasizer can be integrated very effectively into existing
production facilities.
