The book we are all reading is, How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid For Success by Julie Lythcott-Haims. We spent the time in small groups discussing our parenting styles and focusing on the first part of the book- What we are currently doing. Being in a room full of parents sharing their stories of overparentingmade for more laughter than one would expect! Some key take-a-ways from our conversations. . . We all do the best we know how as parents. Sometimes our fears get in our way of parenting. Look for support in friends, co-workers, teachers, clergy, etc (and not just to hear what you want to hear!) Providing opportunities for your children to problem solve, fail, learn, grow, experience hardship, be sad, cry, face adversity are all ways they learn to become independent and resilient. Last week we hosted the first ever, LP Parent Book Club. The book we are all reading is, How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid For Success by Julie Lythcott-Haims. We spent the time in small groups discussing our parenting styles and focusing on the first part of the book- What we are currently doing. Being in a room full of parents sharing their stories of “overparenting” made for more laughter than one would expect! Some key take-a-ways from our conversations. . .

We all do the best we know how as parents.

Sometimes our fears get in our way of parenting.

Look for support in friends, co-workers, teachers, clergy, etc (and not just to hear what you want to hear!)

Providing opportunities for your children to problem solve, fail, learn, grow, experience hardship, be sad, cry, face adversity are all ways they learn to become independent and resilient.

If you are interested in a quick peek into the author and the book you can check out her Ted Talk. https://www.ted.com/talks/ju-lie_lythcott_haims_how_to_raise_successful_kids_without_over_parenting We are going to meet again in June to finish our conversa-tions around the remainder of the book. Information will be included in the LP Press in May if you are interested in join-ing us then!
