At Doncaster College it’s not just about the course, it’s about the whole learning environment. The time you take to study, the people you meet and the things that you can get involved in all impact on your student experience.

All students have access to The Hub’s common room, open between 10.00am and 2.00pm most days. Comfy sofas, pool tables, games consoles and large screens playing the latest hits are all provided so you can relax in the

company of friends when you’re not in lessons.

When you start College, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase an NUS Extra card, which gives you exclusive discounts, offers

and competitions designed to make student life more exciting, memorable and rewarding. You can use it to make your money go further on books, clothes, sports equipment, CDs, travel, computer gear, gigs and even eating out.

Student LifeWhichever campus you are at, you will find a variety of healthy, budget friendly bites to eat from breakfast to lunch. Whether you’re after a simple sandwich or a full cooked dinner, we have something for everyone.

You’ll never be thirsty as you will find plenty of vending machines, water points and coffee bars located across the various

campuses selling a variety of thirst quenching drinks. You can also bring in your own lunch — you’ll find loads of comfy seats dotted

around campus to take some time out and refuel.

The Student Union can give you advice and guidance, whatever your problem. You can use the Student Union drop-in service to get advice on things like money matters, keeping healthy, childcare, travel and loads more. If you have problems with your course, or need any support, they can help.

You are automatically eligible for membership of the Student Union once you have enrolled, allowing you to run for Student Governor or vote in College elections.

The Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) are situated on both The Hub and High Melton campuses, offering a range of welcoming environments to help you study. There are over 80,000 books, multimedia resources and journals to support your chosen course of study. There is access to approximately 200 computers across both campuses with facilities to print, scan, copy and finish documents in black and white or colour. Wireless internet access is available for you to bring your own mobile device.

As well as physical resources, staff and students have online access to the web catalogue, over 3,000 electronic books, 30 subscription databases, around 25,000 electronic journal titles and more than 500,000 full text journal articles.

These online resources can be accessed at a time to suit you, from any internet enabled device, both on and off campus, and support all programme/curriculum areas.

Opening hours during term time are 8:30am until 8:00pm, Monday to Thursday and 8.30am to 4.45pm on Fridays. Vacation opening hours may vary and do not include evenings and Saturdays.

Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is the process?Depending on the sector, you will

usually attend College one day per

week and your employer will give

you work based training whilst at

work for the remainder of the week.

What do I need to get onto an Apprenticeship?To study on an Apprenticeship at

Doncaster College you will require

three GCSEs grade A*-C as well

as already being employed in the

relevant sector/chosen area of study.

All Apprentices will be interviewed

by the employer as well as

undertaking an initial assessment

at the College. Prior experience

and grades will be taken into

consideration.

What levels are Apprenticeships available at?Doncaster College offers

Apprenticeships at intermediate,

higher and advanced levels.

How much will I be paid?You will be guaranteed minimum

Apprenticeship wage with some

employers paying more based on

experience.

How long do Apprenticeships take?The length and time of your course

will depend on each individual subject

and employer, usually lasting 12-18

months but sometimes extending to

the maximum of four years.

What is an Apprenticeship made up of?The Apprenticeship is made up

of a relevant competence based

qualification, Functional Skills and a

Technical Certificate/Diploma.

How will I be assessed?From your first day you will be

assigned an Assessor, who will visit

you at least once a month in your

work place to evaluate you and

ensure you are getting the support

from your employer that you need.

How do I get started on an Apprenticeship?You’ll need to think carefully about

the field of work in which you want to

train. It’s a good idea to discuss this

with your parents/carers/guardians

or Careers Advisor at school.

Once you have an idea of what your

interests are you can start applying

for suitable jobs. You can also

a chat about opportunities available.

Do I need to be employed when starting my Apprenticeship?An Apprenticeship is a job training

so all prospective Apprentices need

to be employed in the area they

wish to gain their qualifications.

You will not be able to enrol on the

course without an employer who is

willing to take you on and pay you a

wage. We can support you in finding

the right employment.

What sort of person is accepted on to an Apprenticeship?To do an Apprenticeship, you will

need to be able to show that you

can use your own initiative and that

you are the right person for the job.

You will need to be committed

and willing to work hard, as well

as completing on the job training.

Working well on your own as well

as in a team is another important

requirement. As a student on an

Apprenticeship you need to be

realistic about the amount of work

you may have to do and you should

be prepared for study.

Can I progress on to Further or Higher Education?Most Apprenticeships offer

a potential progression from

intermediate through to advanced

through to higher levels. Advanced

Apprentices can progress onto a

Level 4 industry qualification or

higher education qualification such

as a HNC/D or a Foundation Degree.

This course will help you build your confidence and independence through a whole range of activities, from art to cooking. You will also go on trips around Doncaster and sometimes a little further! You will be supported by a very friendly team, who will help you with any worries you may have and make sure you enjoy your time in College.

If you are 16 to 25 years old, unemployed and not in education and are looking to improve your confidence, communication and employability skills; then this course could be for you. This is a 12-week personal development course, offering work experience, qualifications, practical skills, community projects and a residential week.

What will I cover?The course is based mainly around

communications skills and building

confidence, independence and work

experience and you can opt for a

range of other subjects including;

• Personal Presentation

• Art

• Catering

• Sport

• Drama.

Will I gain a qualification?You will work towards a number of

units and get a qualification at the

end of the year, if you work hard

and come to all the classes. Your

tutors will assess you whilst you are

in class.

How long will I be at College?You will be required to attended

classes for up to 15 hours a week

over the five days. Depending on

which route you choose you will be

studying at College between one

and three years.

Where will my lessons be?Your lessons will be located at The

Hub, Doncaster College’s town

centre campus and will be delivered

in specially designated classrooms.

How do I get on to the course?You do not need any academic

qualifications to get on to the course,

but you will be invited to come and

look around the College and also

get to attend some taster sessions

Vol.Success Volunteering Programme

Doncaster College offers a range of volunteering opportunities which will give you the opportunity to increase your skills, qualifications and employability during a short placement.

Taking on a volunteering placement will allow you to try out potential careers that you may like to work with in the future.

A placement can help build your self-confidence and leadership skills, provide the opportunity for you to make a difference and influence College life for all students and help you prepare for moving into a job or continuing your education.

What will be expected of me?• Commitment and a strong desire

support and assistance with

additional cost. These include the 16-

18 Discretionary Support Fund and

flexible programme designed to
