Welcome back to term 2.

It has been a busy time in the library as usual. We are

working hard to get all books in our collection marked as

the appropriate Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC) books

for Grades K-6. These books have an appropriate sticker

on the cover. K-2 is red; 3-4 is green, 5-6 is blue and 7-9 is

purple.

The ID number for each book is written on the inside page.

I would like to congratulate the following students for the

successful completion of their PRC. Ariela V Kindergarten;

Noah B, Ayla G and Selwyn V from Year 1; Felix C, Alicia C

and Vyusssh S. from Year 2; Quinton C, Genevieve D, Billy

G, Allegra I, Alex L and Isaac T from Year 3; Isla A, Amy B,

Henna B, Amelia C, Amelia G, Micah H, Eliza J, Ingrid J,

Protiti K, Poppy L and Annika L from Year 4. Olga B, Lana B,

Hannah C, Isaac C, Kaitlyn F, Jemima H, Georgia H, Julia I,

Louisa J, Yasmin J, Luca K, Danielle P, Alexandra R and

Thomas T from Year 5; Malia B, Sophie B, Zoe C, Ava D, Ella

G, Tahlia H, Daniel P and Francesco V from Year 6. It is

particularly pleasing to see so many students in Years 4-6

showing their enthusiasm. We try to encourage each

student to borrow at least 1 PRC book appropriate to their

PRC level in their library lessons. I believe it is very

important that teachers, parents and librarians encourage

the students to develop a love reading for pleasure.

If you are having problems logging on at home please let

one of the library staff know and we can help you. Starting

this term we are happy to welcome Ms Christine Hair who

will be taking over the library on Thursday and Friday for

the rest of the year. Ms Lauren Burke is in the library

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday; Ms Christine Hair, Thursday

and Friday and I am here on Fridays.

Visit by Warrant Officer Fletcher

On Wednesday the 1st of May, Warrant Officer Fletcher from the Australian Army visited year 6

and informed us on what it’s like to be in the Australian Army.

Warrant Officer Fletcher explained to us the rankings, training and what it’s like fighting in a

war. He said that the war conditions have improved since WW1 and WW2.

Warrant Officer Fletcher answered many of our questions including:

Q. Does the army use trenches like they did in WW1?

A. We don’t use trenches like the ones you see from WW1 however, in our training we are

taught how to build trenches if necessary.

Q. How long have you been in the Australian Army?

A. I have been in the army for 30 years.

Q. How long do you stay away from your family during a war?

A. I leave my family for about 6 months per war.

Q. Why did you decide to join the Army?

A. I joined the army because a friend suggested to join the Australian Army.

Q. What is the thing you enjoy the most about the Army?

A. I enjoy helping out my country. It’s an important job protecting our country. I have been

able to visit many parts of the world.

Q. How many different languages have you had to learn?

A. I have had to learn a few languages so I can communicate

with people from other countries when we are in combat.

Warrant Officer Fletcher told us many stories and answered all of

our questions. It was really interesting listening to what it is like to

be in the army.

This year our school has registered to participate in the NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge.

The purpose of the Challenge is to encourage students to participate in sport and physical activity to lead a healthy

lifestyle.

Over a ten week period, Term 2 Week 3 (13 May) to Term 3 Week 2 (2 August), students will be monitoring physi-

cal activity levels during class time, at recess and lunch as well as during sport lessons. Physical activity outside

school hours will also count towards the Challenge award. The aim is to work towards an average at least 60

minutes of activity a day for ten weeks.

We would like to invite families to support us in encouraging students’ healthy use of leisure time and to experi-

ence the joy of being active together.

Each student in years 3-6 will be issued with a logbook to record their daily physical activity.

Whilst K-2 students will work towards a Gold class award level.

Students completing the Challenge will receive a personalised certificate (Diamond, Gold, Silver or Bronze), signed

by the Premier of New South Wales.

Physical activity is valued for its physical, social and emotional benefits. It also helps young people to develop com-

munication skills, confidence and resilience.
