Diss Town Council News
Call for new Town CouncillorFollowing the resignation of Councillor Mrs J Hurley in March there is currently a vacancy on Diss Town Council which will be filled by co-option by the Town Council at its meeting on 16th May 2012.
If you are passionate about Diss and would like to be in a position to help make a difference in the town, then we would urge you to consider standing for the Town Council. Being a Town Councillor means that you are fully aware of and up to date with what is happening in the town and
can have an influence in trying to make improvements. It can be challenging and time consuming but also very rewarding.

Take Pride in Diss The Town Council is organising a big Clean-up in the town over the weekend of 26th – 29th May and is asking everyone to get involved.
Businesses have been contacted to encourage them to take part by giving the outside of their premises a spring clean and local schools have also been asked to help with the clean-up and to take part in an art competition with a ‘Keep Diss Tidy’ theme. As part of the campaign we are promoting a ‘Give an Hour of Your Time’ proposal and are hoping that as many people as possible can spare
one hour over the weekend to help with the clean-up. We recognise that people lead busy lives but if enough individuals come forward together it could make a big difference.

Pupils paint Milestone
Four pupils from Attleborough Junior School were chosen to go along to the milestone sited at Keeling Way in Attleborough and help Mr Nigel Ford of the Society to paint it. The Town Mayor, Mrs Karen Pettitt along with members of the Attleborough Heritage Group, Mrs Doreen Coman and Miss Marie Young also lent a hand.
The milestone at Keeling Way was put into place in 1780 and its overall size is 81 inches, 52 inches
of this above ground. Mr Chris Read, Head at
Attleborough Junior, said that Year 5 pupils, Rebecca, Hannah, Karis and Aimee were proud to be chosen for this and were looking forward to pointing the milestone out to friends and family.
Mrs Coman said it was good to have the younger generation involved and hopefully others will now notice it and want to delve more into the history of their town.
The Milestone Society is currently renovating 60 milestones throughout Norfolk as part of the
Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.

Norfolk Ramblers will run their annual Linear Walk along the Boudicca Way for the first time since its rejuvenation
The hard work to rejuvenate the award-winning B o u d i c c a Way footpath, which runs for 36 miles between Diss and Norwich
railway stations, will be further rewarded in the spring and summer.
Norfolk Ramblers have chosen the route along the Way’s 4 main sections for their Linear organised walks. There will be one walk a month from May to August, with walks varying in length from 9½ to 11 miles, with shorter walks of 5 to 6 miles available on the same days. Transport will be available to and from the walk start and finish.
Sheila Smith, from the Norfolk Ramblers says, “We have adapted the route so each stage begins from adequate parking facilities. We have chosen to start in Diss town centre and finish at Whitlingham, on the southern fringes of Norwich. Experienced guides will lead each walk and there will be a choice between joining
a briskly paced group or one of a more leisurely nature, with well-behaved dogs welcome. Coach travel is available from Norwich railway station, St Stephen’s, Eaton and Asda in Great Yarmouth for all pre-bookings.”
Sheila adds, “The new Boudicca Way is better than it ever has been, so we’re keen to help encourage more people to experience this beautiful, unspoilt route and learn about its varied history and wildlife.”
Walkers can either book in advance (for return transport) or simply turn up on the day at the beginning of each walk.
The walks are:Sunday 13th May - estimated start 10.30 am. Diss to Pulham Market - 9½ miles.Sunday 10th June - estimated start 10.30 am. Tivetshall to Tasburgh - 11 miles.Sunday 8th July - estimated start 10.15 am. Tasburgh to Poringland - 10 miles.Sunday 12th August - estimated start 10.15 am. Poringland to Whitlingham Park - 10 miles.
Sheila says, “Although advance bookings are limited, we will welcome people turning up to join us. The coach and mini bus will be available to transport walkers back to the start

Family History
I am fascinated by old railway posters, with their warm, bright colours depicting an idealised pre-war world.
They show an Arcadian vision of country places and the seaside. Nobody is middle-aged or frumpy. Sleek men and women and perfect children enjoy places of perpetual sunshine, just a train journey away.
It was a time when nobody but the rich went abroad. So the ultimate adventure was to go to Skegness where you too could be lithe and affluent-looking in a sunny clime with your impeccable kids.
The reality was quite different, with grim boarding houses and stern landladies who made you stay out whatever the weather. It was those conditions that gave Billy Butlin the idea of holiday camps.
But many families did go on seaside holidays. The Abbotts used to go to Great Yarmouth, Felixstowe or Clacton and hire a bungalow.
The picture shows some of them in the 1930s at California Halt on a now-dismantled railway line to Yarmouth. It was on the
Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway until closure in 1959.
My Dad, ‘Pip’, is in the middle. On his right is his sister, ‘Cis’ and her fiancé (later husband) Reg Harold, who would die in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. On Pip’s left is Reg’s widowed mother, Ethel, and Pip’s younger brother, ‘Buddy’. That brother lost an eye while driving a wartime ambulance.
My grandfather and grandmother also went on most of the holidays; but I am surprised that someone in the family had a camera at that time.
The closeness of the family is apparent, with arms around each other on several pictures. But the war changed all that.

After the A.G.M. in January the year got off to a good start with a Demonstration by Crystall Dyball. A Cheque for £200 was presented to ‘First Responders’ by Eileen
Birchall (pictured). There are some interesting demonstrators lined up throughout the year, also hands on Workshops in August and October. Our summer outing is going to Audley End House and Gardens, seats available Wednesday 25th July.

Never Too Early
‘Big Sing’ this coming August at St. Marys Church Diss.
May has arrived all too soon but you might think I’m being a little premature when I talk about this years annual ‘Big Sing’ this coming August at St. Marys Church Diss.
The reason for this article is that hymn requests are already starting to filter through to me. Indeed it’s never too early to send
in hymn choices and they will be put in a file untill the main bulk of requests come through in July. This year I am asking you to choose what you think is a GREAT hymn something you love to hear sung on Songs of Praise or a hymn that gives you a tingle or makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. I must say that the hymn you choose does not have to have the word great in it’s title but whatever your choice if you think it’s a great hymn then so be it. You can take your request to the information shop by the mere so get thinking. You can be sure this event will please you all as it has done for the past seven years.
Put this event in your diaries now and this year the title will be ‘The Big Sing Special for 2012 Sunday August 12th commencing at 6.30pm.

The Main Attraction At St. Mary’s Diss
Over the past eight months much work has been going on behind the scenes where the new summer fair is
being planned for 30th June 2012.
Many stalls will be put around the church building to make it easy for people to browse and also view a large exhibition just inside the building. Yes the usual stalls like cakes, soft toys and tombola will be there but new stalls will also appear especially to attract children such as a lollipop area and possibly face painting as well. Now if you feel thirsty then teas, coffee and soft drinks with biscuits will be served in the hall where other displays will take place.
Outside on the grass two lots of musical entertainment are planned during the four hours of the fair. Come and listen to a jazz band and later the Castleton Brass Band will entertain you. We can’t do without the popular Bottle Stall and a new 50 pence table will be in place too.
Something the children will enjoy is The Stocks where they can
throw wet sponges at whoever is put in them and the Curate is willing to have two sessions in there.
If you begin to feel hungry then on one side of the church a Hog Roast is being cooked. So you have plenty to see and do at the Main Attraction on that Saturday from 10am to 2pm and you all will be reminded it's there as a sound system is being used. There is still two months to go so look out for more stalls which will be mentioned in the June edition of this magazine. Meanwhile there are two lunchtime concerts before the summer fair. On Friday 18th May commencing at 12.30pm the concert will be ‘Falk Duo’ with Glyn Walden and friend. This concert is new to the church so go along and enjoy the event which as always ends with an optional Ploughmans Lunch still at £3.50 each, very good value as always. Gerry Hosking.

Norfolk and Norwich Festival
Some of the best international talent from across the world will be taking to the Norwich Theatre Royal stage at this year’s Norfolk and Norwich Festival.
With breath-taking dance performances, renowned international musicians and accomplished actors, this year’s line-up will be a hard one to beat.

Gap year in Kenya
Rebecca Goddard (16) a student at Hartismere High School is hoping to take part in a gap year experience
next year working with disadvantaged children in Kenya.
This young lady is well known in the Diss area for being a pro-active volunteer and role model for many other youngsters. Having herself attended all the sections within the 3rd Diss Salvation Army Group she is now assisting and mentoring other Rainbows and Brownies in the group.
While in Kenya, Becky will be helping to build schools and help educate young children. Becky
has already been busy raising funds for her trip but this 'Shoe Shine' is a golden opportunity for the town folk to support her with her fundraising and at the same time getting one of your least likeable chores completed for you by Serving and Ex-Serving Military personnel associated with the Diss Salvation Army Band and Scout Group!

From an appearance on Jools Holland to performing at Glastonbury festival, Jerry Dammers is one of the country’s finest jazz improvisers. This year, for the first time ever Jerry will bring his magnificent twenty-piece orchestra to Norwich. Jerry Dammer’s Spatial AKA Orchestra once played tribute to space jazz eccentric Sun Ra, but the orchestra has now expanded their repertoire to include reggae, exotica, dub-step and Ska and will perform a variety of breathtaking music on May 26.

Continuing our serialisation of historical editions of the Diss Express, here we look at the realities of the First World War for the people of Diss.
The First World War
In the edition of September 29th, 1916 was the following:
ANOTHER DISS FOOTBALLER KILLED - ‘Much regret is felt at the sad
news of the death of Private Ernest Weavers, of the 9th Norfolk, who was killed in action on September 20th. He was a son of Mrs. Wiskins, Beehive Yard, Diss, and a member of the Diss Tuesday Football Club. Nearly all associated with this Club volunteered for service shortly after the outbreak of the war, and Private Weavers is the third member who has given his life for his country. He was 22 years of age.’
For those left behind, the news was often heartbreaking. WOUNDED AND MISSING- ‘We regret to record that Mrs. M. Bryant, of Waveney Road, Diss whose six sons have been engaged in service for their King and country, has received an intimation that one of them, Lance-Corporal William T. Bryant,
9th Norfolk Regiment, has been wounded in action, and was admitted to hospital on the 16th inst. Some months since we recorded that another of Mrs. Bryant’s son Corporal R. Bryant, of the Norfolk Regiment, had been reported to be missing and as no tidings have since been received only a very faint hope is entertained that he is still alive.’
As expected, daily life in the town was also disturbed. It was forbidden to have lights on display after dark and people were often fined for failing to obscure the lights in their houses or businesses.
The Diss Express reported one such case…‘Inspector James… said that at 9.45pm he was on duty with Special Constable Easto in Store Street, Roydon, and on passing defendant’s house he saw a light shining from a bedroom window. He went to the door and rang the bell.
Defendant came and witness asked if he was aware a light was shining through the bedroom window. He replied that his wife had just gone upstairs to put the children to bed. The light was shining across the road and no blind had been drawn…..The Chairman, in announcing the decision of the Bench that the penalty would be 5/-, added that in future they would be inclined to inflict heavier penalties.’

Harleston & District Business Forum
The meeting was unanimously in favour and subsequently a committee, chaired by Clive Attwood, met mid April to discuss its formation.
The forum, for businesses in Harleston and all surrounding villages, will represent the
business community when appropriate and will aim to promote collaboration, provide a meeting place for members to learn and share ideas, contribute to positive development of the area and encourage consumers into the area.
Regular events will be organised for members, including breakfast and evening meetings with guest speakers and much more.

As time ticks by...
Walking into Diss along Mere Street, you can't help but notice L J Chapman Watchmaker and Jeweller. With its striking unusual shaped facade it's as much as part of town life as the Mere that it faces.
But not many people realise just how much a part of the town's history, the Chapman family watchmaker and jewellery business really is. In fact, this year marks the 90th anniversary of its existence in Diss.
The foundations of the business were laid back in 1922 when Laurence's grandfather Francis Robert Chapman set up in business in St Nicholas Street.
Francis was a commissioned officer in the army with the Royal Norfolk Regiment. During his service he was decorated but wounded which meant he could opt for re-training. He chose to train as a watchmaker in Clerkenwell in London.
Francis was born in Stonham in Suffolk but married a girl from Diss called Gertrude Scott. They lived above the shop in St Nicholas Street and went on to have four children.
The business flourished and, in 1945, when son Charles Laurence came out of the Royal Air Force he joined the family

business continuing to work alongside his father until he passed away in 1952 aged 60 years old.
Charles married Molly in 1941 and they went on to have four children; Laurence, Sheila, Michael and Tricia. In 1965 Charles decided
to relocate premises to the new shopping precint that had recently been formed under the walkway in Mere Street, now home to Clinton Cards.
At first all went well at the new premises but, after a robbery in 1969, it seemed a better bet to move to the current premises which was directly below the family home.
Son Laurence eventually joined his father in business after completing service with the Royal Airforce in 1979. Since then, the
shop has gone from strength to strength surviving the economic ups and downs of the last 33 years.
Laurence is proud to be carrying on the family tradition and has a vast wealth of knowledge about clocks, watches and jewellery. Stocking diamond, gold, silver and amber jewellery, L J Chapman also sells a wide range of wedding rings. With

Enthusiasts&I Collect GuitarsIt was my nan who bought me my first guitar when I was about eight.
She bought it second hand from a boy at my primary school and right away I was hooked.
Luckily my cousin Heidi was a great guitarist and she taught me my first few chords.
Aged 11, my mum's friend bought me my first full-size instrument, a
classical nylon-strung guitar for
my birthday.About this
time, I also s t a r t e d h a v i n g f o r m a l lessons and my love
for music grew and
grew. When it was time to take my GCSEs, I picked music as one of my subjects and threw myself into it.
Then, when I was 14, I saved up all my birthday and Christmas money and bought my first ever electric guitar. It was a Squier by Fender Telecaster and cost £130. I loved it and was really proud to have such a beautiful instrument. At 16, I managed to save up enough to pay £350 for a proper American Fender Telecaster. I bought it second-hand and I can remember feeling so excited as my dad drove me to pick it up. Even as a teenager, I loved being surrounded by guitars and I kept them all in my bedroom which was where I rehearsed.
Over the next few years I played at local concerts and music festivals and developed an interest in all different types of music from
country to rock, bluegrass to folk.This led me to develop an interest
in the different types of guitars used by different musicians. And this is where my collecting obsession really kicked in!
I bought a Vintage Les Paul guitar which is popular with rock musicians such as Slash from Guns N' Roses. Then I bought an Ibanez Jem which is used more by heavy metal musicians such as Steve Vai. I also have an Epiphone Twin-Neck (12-string and 6-string) which was made popular by Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin and a Fender Elector-Acoustic guitar which is used widely by rhythm and folk players. My most recent purchase is an Ozark Spider Resonator which is popular for bluegrass music but was also used regularly by Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knopfler. Alongside my collection of guitars, I'm also interested in collecting amplifiers and have managed to get my hands on quite a few. Among my collection are a Vox Valvetronics, a Laney Valve Amp and a Kustom All Valve Amp.
Auction site Ebay is a great way to get your hands on musical equipment and has really fuelled my obsession. I've also extended my love of collecting musical equipment by
setting up a mobile DJ and Karaoke business. I have an 800 watt PA system, laser lighting, LED par cans, LED scanners and over 100,000 karaoke songs!
My dream is to build a home studio which I could set up for personal use and as a space to rehearse. I'd also love to buy a Gibson Led Paul Slash Signature Series but they cost about £2500 so I'll have to save up for a while!
I have two young children - Archie, 3 and Elsie, 21 months. Whenever I start to play a guitar they race over and want to join in and have a strum. I would love for them to be into music too and I'm already looking to buy Archie a half-size guitar so he can play along with me.

evenings you could wonder what it was that could entail such devotion. Well just ask Gavin Taber of Roydon Garage how he manages to fit everything in. For a start you have to have his passion for car racing.
For Gavin has followed his Dad Adrian Taber who used to race
1600 Hot Rods in the late 80’s and 90's, into the sport
starting in a Mini Stox and progressing to classic Stock Cars.
After a short break Gavin moved onto National Super
Rods for about a year getting to third in the World Final and then to the top formula the impressive National Rods racing at the Speedworth Stadiums who have raceways at Aldershot, Wimbledon, Hednesford Eastbourne and more locally Ipswich and Great Yarmouth.
So far this year Gavin is on course to take part in the World Final in Ipswich in July. He first displayed his car a Tigra B at the Birmingham NEC Autosport Show in January.

The name of Fiske will be familiar to many that have followed Motor sport in the area.
Danny FiskeLegendary Derek Fiske of Diss was forefront in the sport and was for many years world champion. Keeping up the family tradition is his son Danny who presently races a 2.0 Hot Rod for Speedworth Motor sports .
Currently he is 62 points clear in the National Championship and last year the 22 year old won the 2011 English Championship on his birthday, he also won the East Anglian Championship.
Danny has been racing in the formula for about five years, recently representing the UK in
a tour of South Africa . He and a party of seven English drivers from a range of different formulas that run for Speedworth were there representing England in a Match Race Series vs South Africa.
Next meeting dates for Danny are 13th May at Aldershot, 27th May at Great Yarmouth, 4th June at Eastbourne and the 16th June at Ipswich.The big Speedworth Speed weekend is the 7th and 8th July at Ipswich.
Danny also took the car, which is owned and prepared by Meede Civil Engineering to the Birmingham Autosport show at the NEC in January and this was the golden opportunity to have a joint
picture taken with Gavin Taber’s National Hot Rod.
Local Magazine will be following Danny in his next races and will report how he gets on.

The celebrations may still be two months away but dozens of streets around Breckland are gearing up to stage Diamond Jubilee parties.
Jubilee Street Parties In Breckland Given A Boost
Breckland Council has received and funded 46 applications to hold street parties in anticipation of the festivities, centred around June 2-5, that will mark 60 years of the Queen’s reign.
Banham is just one area getting into the jubilee spirit. The village has organised a 1950’s fancy dress street party, ‘traditional food’ of fish, chips, mushy peas and jelly and ice cream, music, races and games, sing-a-longs and a Jubilee souvenir for the children.

Oliver Grantham, a student at Attleborough High School, has won a competition to design Attleborough’s permanent monument to mark the Queen’ Diamond Jubilee.

Oliver, 12, was one of many young people to submit entries to the competition sponsored by the Attleborough Jubilee Partnership, a community group made up of town
councillors and representatives from various organisations in Attleborough set up to organise events to mark the Jubilee in the Town.
Mayor Karen Petit announced the winner at a school assembly and said that Oliver’s design was ‘the unanimous choice of the judges. We were taken with the simplicity of the design and its link with the Town’s past. Oliver had put a lot of thought and effort into his submission and we were amazed to discover he was only 12 years old.’ She added that ‘we would like to have a working fruit press incorporated into the finished design and will now work with Oliver and hopefully some local artists and craftsmen to bring the design to reality so that it can be unveiled officially on 5 June as part of Attleborough’s Jubilee celebrations. The number and standard of entries for the competition shows not only the enthusiasm for the Jubilee but also the talent in the town.’
The memorial unveiling will be the culmination of 4 full days of activities planned by the Jubilee partnership.

The Jubilee celebrations in Harleston were always intended to be ‘for the community, by the community’ and over 20 local clubs and organisations and lots of individuals have got together to organise a
Picnic in the Park to be held on the Recreation Ground on June 4th from 11am – 3pm.
Harleston Jubilee Celebrations 2012
The inspiration for the event has come from a Victorian poster, which we were shown by the Town Council, for the Harleston celebrations of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897.
We chose a theme of the 1950s and 60s but apart from this we have kept as far as possible to the Victorian celebrations although we have given them a modern twist.
In 1897 the events began at 11am with a service in Redenhall church
with members of military bands taking part. This was then followed at 3pm by ‘the children assembling in the Market Place to sing the National Anthem’, after which some sports were held on the Wilderness Meadow, which is now our recreation ground. These sports included ‘The best dressed ladies and gentleman’s cycle, the best comic costume on a bicycle, the 100yds slow bicycle race and a 100yds flat race for agricultural labourers over 25yrs’. This was then followed by ‘tea being provided for the children of the parish between the ages of 5 and 15yrs’.

The popular Ride for Life cycling event will return to Thetford Forest again...
2012 is the 19th year of Ride for Life, which has raised more than £726,861 since it began, and this year promises to be just as successful and just as fun. In 2012 EACH is also celebrating 21 years of Quidenham hospice.
Ride for Life 2012 will take place in the heart of Thetford Forest on Sunday May 20. 10 mile and 25 mile off-road routes and 19 mile and 35 mile on road
cycle routes are available, as are 3 mile and 9 mile walking routes- so there really is something for everyone.
Based at the village green in Santon Downham - participants and supporters will also be able to enjoy live acoustic music as well as an array of food stalls including a Barbecue.
The event has grown significantly since it began in
1994 and approximately 1,000 cyclists and walkers of varying ages and abilities now take part every year.
Monies raised from the event ensures EACH can continue to deliver care and support to local life-threatened children and their families- in families’ homes or at one of three hospices; Quidenham, Milton or Ipswich.
EACH needs to raise £4.8 million from the public to deliver their services this year and Ride For Life plays a key role. Adult cyclists: £10, adult walkers: £6, child cyclists (13 and under): £5, child walkers: £4 and team entry prices vary. Participants are asked to raise sponsorship.

On a rainy Sunday afternoon we headed to one of these - The Falcon - for Sunday lunch with our two toddlers aged 3 and 21 months.
Stepping inside we were greeted by a roaring log fire and a big friendly dog, two of my most favourite things. At £4.95, the roast dinner seemed a great deal so we ordered one for each of us and one for the kids to share. We had a choice of chicken and pork and ordered a mix so we could share. The friendly staff were happy to provide a highchair and spare plate for our youngest.
When it came, the food looked exactly like something your nan would make, was steaming hot and I couldn't wait to tuck in. And yes, it was as yummy as it looked. Even my fussy three-year-
old proclaimed to like it. The vegetables were just right and the potatoes were just like the ones I dream of making. Even the gravy was gorgeous.
The Falcon really is a friendly little pub with a pool table, dart board and even a weekly general knowledge quiz on a Wednesday night. With live music on Saturdays and bank holidays, summer BBQs and a courtyard garden, there's something for everyone. And the beer's great too!
Home-cooked Sunday lunch is served from 2-5pm, bookings advisable. The Falcon also does a cooked breakfast on Sunday mornings from 10am-noon.

Asparagus with a Poached Egg in Hollandaise SauceDear Simon,

Hello Sally here's a good recipe for Wild Duck...
Ingredients: 1 Large Duck, 1 apple cored and Sliced, 1 tablespoon butter, ¼ cup honey, ¼ cup orange juice, 1 teaspoon orange peel, ¼ teaspoon ginger, ¼ teaspoon basil leaves.
Preheat oven to 220 degrees. Wash duck well and dry. Salt the inside and the outside of duck and stuff the inside with apple pieces. Place the remaining ingredients in a small pan, heat and then simmer. Place the duck on a piece of tin foil (heavy duty) and large enough to completely cover the duck. When placing the duck in the foil ensure that it is suitably covered so as to not let any liquid escape and then pour ½ of the liquid mixture into the duck cavity and the rest over the duck. Seal up the foil so as to create a leak-proof chamber for the duck to cook in. Place foiled duck into a shallow baking pan, no lid and roast for one hour and forty-five minutes in the 220 degree oven. With 15 minutes left, open up the top of the foil and let the duck brown. Ingredients:1 Pound Asparagus, 2 Eggs1 Hollandaise Sauce
1. Bring a pot of water to the boil and then reduce the heat to simmer. 2. Crack both Eggs into a bowl, swirl the water in the pot and pour each egg into the pot.3. Let the Eggs cook until the whites are set but the yolks are still runny, about 2-3 minutes 4. Arrange the Asparagus on plates and top with the Pouched Eggs and the Hollandaise Sauce.
Hollandaise Sauce Ingredients:1 cup butter, 4 egg yolks, 2 tbsp lemon juice (the juice from 1 small lemon), 1 tbsp cold water, Salt - to taste, Cayenne pepper (or a dash of Tabasco sauce) - to taste
1. Heat water in a Saucepan 2. Combine the egg yolks and the cold water, whisk until the mixture is light and foamy. Mix in a couple of drops of lemon juice, 3. Set the bowl directly at the top of the saucepan of simmering water. and whisk in the eggs until they are slightly thickened. 4. Remove the bowl from the heat and slowly add the melted butter, whisking constantly. 5. After you've added all the butter, whisk in the remaining lemon juice and season to taste.

Time for some Turkish delight
Just four hours away, Turkey is a fascinating country which straddles two continents. Best of all, it’s outside the Eurozone meaning a favourable exchange rate for your pounds and you can even fly there from Norwich! Here is a guide to Turkey’s biggest resorts:
Antalya - (Pictured above). Located in the Southern Mediteranean region of Turkey, the Antalya area is known as the Turkish Riviera. With a winning combination of gorgeous beaches, renowned restaurants and fantastic architecture, there’s something for everyone. Backed by the spectacular Taurus Mountains, Antalya is a vibrant city as rich in history and heritage as it is in a wide range of shops to suit all budgets. Take a wander into the old part of town known as Kaleici which has been beautifully restored and is now a protected historical zone. Nearby resorts include Alanya, Belek, Side and Kemer.
Bodrum - Bustling Bodrum is a port town in the southwestern Aegean region of Turkey. Its pretty harbour and modern Marina attracts yacht-
owners from all around the world. Imposing fifteenth century Bodrum Castle dominates the bay. If it’s nightlife you’re after, Bodrum has all the bars, clubs and restaurants you could ever need. While Bodrum doesn’t have its own beach, there are plenty close by which are easy to get to. If you fancy a day trip to Greece, hop on a ferry to nearby Kos which you can reach in as little as 20 minutes! Nearby resorts include Gumbet and Bitez.
Fethiye - Pretty Fethiye is a tourist city surrounded by spectacular pine-clad mountains. With an excellent marina offering a range of boat trips, good nightlife and a bustling street market, it’s a very popular destination for British tourists. To visit perhaps the most famous beach in Turkey take a bus 30 minutes south to the beautiful resort of Oludeniz. Here you can watch paragliders overhead as they jump from nearby Babadag Mountain. Nearby resorts include Hisaronu, Calis Beach, Ovacik and Oludeniz.
Marmaris - Famed for its nightlife, Marmaris is a bustling resort set against a backdrop of pine-clad hills in southwestern Turkey. With trips galore to local attractions, shops to tempt you to part with your Lira and a beautiful beach to soak up the sun, it offers something for everyone. If you prefer somewhere a little bit quieter, head just along the coast to the close by smaller resort of Icmeler.
Kusadasi - Situated on the west coast of Turkey, the beautiful city has lots to offer tourists. With sandy beaches, bars, restaurants and even
watermarks, Kusadasi is a great family holiday destination. Head out to nearby Pigeon Island for a spectacular view of Kusadasi itself. To escape the city, head 30 kilometres south to the national park of Kalamaki to relax. It’s an ideal place for a picnic.
Istanbul - If city life is more your thing, then head to the vibrant city of Istanbul for a spectacular city break. Formerly known as Byzantium and Constantinople, Istanbul has a rich history that leaves it awash with historical sights for today’s tourists. The most popular sights include Topkapi Palace, home of the Ottoman Sultans for nearly 400 years, the museum of Ayasofya, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar. Make time to visit a Turkish Bath or Hamam for a real Turkish experience.

in the world whether it’s the latest film or the queen’s jubilee - this has really seen an increase of union jacks painted on furniture and crown embellished cushions.

We have seen a trend for vintage in a very feminine way for quite some time with cute faded floral prints and painted shabby chic furniture but now vintage is moving in a more masculine direction too.
The centenary of the sinking of the titanic has just passed and this has seen a rise in interest in the way we used to travel. We have
seen a huge influx of vintage travel inspired furniture and accessories.
The great thing about this style of furniture is that it can look good in both traditional and contemporary homes. I love to mix old and new pieces together as this makes a scheme look more natural and less formal.
Although this trend can look quite masculine, you can soften the look by adding soft textures with cushions, throws and rugs.
I don’t think it is necessary or always successful to follow a trend in its entirety, it can sometimes look too themed for a home- It is usually better to pick a few carefully chosen pieces.
If ‘luggage’ isn’t your bag (excuse the pun!) the trend for travel comes in many other forms from ornamental antiqued globes to animal print colonial style chairs that are statement pieces.
To create a take on this trend for yourself think of the things that
the first foreign travellers brought back to England and arrange in an eclectic way. A few old fashioned atlas’ could become coffee table books and may be displayed with a horn handled magnifying glass for effect- why not have a hunt around your home to see what on trend pieces you already have.

From small beginings...
Breckland Flower & Garden Club
Thirty years ago ten ladies formed the Breckland Flower and Garden Club. Over the ensuing years the club has flourished and now boasts over 60 members most of whom gathered to celebrate the club's pearl anniversary held at Old Buckenham Village Hall.
The vestibule and tables were beautifully decorated with 'pearl arrangements' (thanks to Christine Hewson and Ann Norris). After a welcome coffee Tacey Hemstock from Bullens Jewellers, Norwich told how pearls were formed and also brought along samples of the different types of pearls available including a string of sea pearls - desirable but unfortunately rather expensive!! Following a buffet lunch prepared by the committee Nick Grounds (national demonstrator) interpreted his title 'Inflorescence' - larger-than-life arrangements but full of colour and movement.
The birthday cake was cut by
the president and chairman and everyone enjoyed a slice of Jean Wade's creation with their cup of tea. The competition - 'Celebration Cocktail' - New Hands class was won by Alison Walker and the Old Hands Class by Shirley Penfold who also won the trophy. Many thanks to everyone who made this such a special day!
May meeting will be held at Old Buckenham Village Hall on Thursday 10th May 2p.m when Pat Barton will be demonstrating - 'In my element'. Keep Yer Heel Down Bor!A ‘slightly on the huh’ look at gardening
Wotcha! ...I’m not a person who shows produce, though I admire those who do. On the market garden our main aim was to grow profitable crops to be sold at Covent Garden (transported by Bartrums). And, strangely enough, the family didn’t always get to have the best produce. For instance, in the strawberry season we would often have the bird-pecked and slug-eaten ones for tea! Anyway, those who do show their excellent produce will enjoy this true story:
A man who was very fond of showing roses got really fed up with the fact that the same lady won 1st prize every time. Then he noticed that she used the same vase each show. The thought came to him that the judges might have felt intimidated by this and that was why they always awarded her 1st prize. So he decided to very kindly make a donation to the society of several identical vases to be used specifically for the show. Sure enough, the following year she came second!

New Plant Centre and Cash & Carry Venture at Snetterton Park Plant-me is a new approach to gardening.
We aim to make it easier for everyone to plan and plant a successful garden or maybe just a flower border.
It’s as easy as 1-2-3. We guide you through what plants to choose and where to plant them. You choose the effect you want - we do the planning, provide the perfect varieties and show you how to plant them.
Our advice is free and we can offer all kinds of solutions to challenges such as which plants to use effectively in an area with hosepipe bans and how to maintain them. For instance here are a few tips. Really soak the planting hole using a watering can, insert the plant, water again then importantly add a mulch to the surface around the plant. You
could use compost, forest bark or gravel. All will help keep the roots of the plant cool, keep moisture in the soil & suppress those pesky weeds!
Also any plant with scented foliage has natural oils which help retain moisture as do those plants with grey or silver foliage which are covered with minute hairs. Those plants with fleshy almost succulent leaves which can store water within are very successful in the garden and most attract bees for the pollen and nectar. So we can also be helping the bee population increase as well.

Star Throwers is a registered charity dedicated to supporting and advising people who are affected by cancer.
Dr. Henry Mannings set up Star Throwers at the end of 2009 to provide help to cancer sufferers who felt they had nowhere else to go or required advice on further management. The treatment of cancer in this country is divided into
conventional therapies and palliative care with patients transferring from the former system to the latter should treatment be unsuccessful. Many patients are not ready to accept that nothing further can be done to help them and seek out further help. At Star Throwers we take an integrative approach to guiding and supporting people with cancer, including their families.
Our centre in Wymondham is open from Mon-Fri 10am-4pm, and provides a haven for people affected by cancer, including the loved ones of those with cancer. Visitors can relax in our bright and airy kitchen or cosy up in the living room in front of our open fire during the winter months. In the summer they can spend time outside in our open and spacious garden, including the ‘garden oasis’ donated to us by EDF energy back in June 2010. Many people have said they felt comforted by our warm, friendly, and positive atmosphere. We believe that complementary therapies have a place in cancer management. Whilst these therapies do not and can never cure cancer they often improve a person’s sense of wellbeing. We have a number of qualified complementary therapists who volunteer their time to provide therapies such as Massage, Reiki, and Reflexology. Nutrition and cancer is also an important factor, so we offer one to one consultations for people to review their diet. For the benefits of light exercise we also host Yoga classes every Thursday morning, and have recently started up an Arts and Crafts club on Fridays. We also aim to provide a talk every week on various aspects of cancer, including prevention.
Finally, possibly the most important aspect of the work we do at Star Throwers is our continual research into potential new treatments for cancer. One of our primary goals is to raise enough funds to develop and research new cancer treatments that concentrate on substances that are less toxic than conventional treatments and have already shown evidence of an anti-cancer effect.
As a young charity at just over 2 years old, the support behind Star Throwers has been fantastic and we would like to thank every single person who has supported us whether it was by giving their time, money, or expertise. We are proud to say we’re a not-for-profit charity, and all donations go towards keeping Star Throwers running and continually improving our services to better support those affected by cancer.

Old Buckenham Players (OBP) is a thriving amateur dramatic group based in the picturesque village of Old Buckenham in Breckland. The group was started by a small group of friends in 1978 at Old Buckenham Village Hall and several
founder members are still active today.
This is a group that likes a challenge and the excitement of taking on wildly different plays. To the many people who come along to support amateur groups they will know that getting an audience – ‘bums on seats’ – is the biggest challenge any group faces. The group has won many awards in Festivals over the years.
They often produce comedies as they are always popular with audiences, but also feel the need to challenge themselves with, ‘straight’ plays, full length or short off-beat one-acters. The group has about 25-30 paid-up members, some of who are staunchly involved in every show and others dip in and out depending upon other commitments and what is
happening in their life at the time. Pantomime season sees a sudden increase in numbers – oh yes it does! OBP are truly a diverse group with members from all sorts of different backgrounds and of all ages from 14 to older than some will admit to! Surprisingly, most of our members do not actually live in Old Buckenham although we all have links here and are fond of the village.
OBP next production is an unusual Alan Ayckbourn play first produced in 1999 called Comic Potential. It has the interesting mix of comedy and drama which aims to make a serious point. Set in the future when actoids – acting robots - are created to make soaps for the mass market, disillusioned Director, Chandler Tate, collaborates with the eager nephew of the TV company’s
big boss to make real comedy with an unusually aware female actoid. When the nephew and the actoid fall in love trouble follows. The show is on 17th, 18th and 19th May 2012 at Old Buckenham Village Hall and tickets are available from Old Buckenham Stores, Nuts ‘n’ Bolts in Attleborough or by calling 01603 810373.

When America entered the Second World War after the bombing of Pearl Harbour, hundreds of thousands of young Americans joined up to help in the fight.

Many came to Norfolk and for two and a half intense years, RAF Thorpe Abbotts became home to the 100th
Bomb Group. From June 1943 to VE day the Flying Fortresses of the bomb group were right on the frontline.
On 5th and 6th May the 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum will be having two open days when veterans families and friends from the 100th BG Foundation USA. will be visiting.
On Saturday May 5th It is hoped that the veterans will attend a church service at Thorpe Abbotts village church at 10:30 am.
The Open Day will be on Sunday the 6th May when there will be Military vehicles, Re-enactors, various stalls, catering, music and circumstances permitting a detachment from RAF Mildenhall.
The 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum was set up and continues to be run by the friends of the Museum. The USAAF Eighth Air Force 100th Bomb Group consisted of four squadrons Construction of the airfield began in 1942. It covered more than 600 acres and had three runways, 3.5 miles of perimeter track and fifty hardstands. The main runway was 6300 ft and was one of the longest in the Eighth Air Force.
At its peak there were around 70 B17 Aircraft and 3,500 personnel at the base. First bombing mission was in June 1943 and the last in April 1945. 19,257 tons of bombs were dropped. Aircraft lost in action and accidents numbered 229. 768 officers and men were killed / missing in action and 939 were
made prisoners of war.

Discover the Dad's Army Museum
Since the Independent voluntary museum opened it has brought 20,000 visitors to the town, organising several town wide events, one of which was the incredible unveiling of the Captain Mainwaring
statue, in the background is the original headquarters of Thetford's Home Guard. The museum are now selling ‘Mini Mainwarings’ and as far as they know this is a unique project, where the sculptor himself is casting from his original maquette. A limited edition of 80 will be sold and originally more than half have been reserved. The museum is now open for the new season and has unveiled no less than 10 revised and new displays – one of which is the Home Guard cabinet. The museum is keen to remind us of the real story behind the humour and they are lucky enough to have a detailed list of Thetford’s original Home Guard platoon. So if you have visited the museum before, you need to hurry back and if you haven’t managed a visit yet – where have you been?!!
