So who are “we”?

Accenture is a leading global provider of management consultancy, technology, and outsourcing services. Our goal is to noticeably improve the business of our customers: to help them achieve high-performance processes and business models, to make their skills and technologies future-proof, to advance digitization and innovation, and to create sustainable market success. Over 305,000 employees worldwide ensure that the right resources and capabilities are activated for clients in over 120 countries.

The success speaks for itself, because many of the world’s leading companies have placed their trust in us for years or decades.

What sets us apart?

We work together with our customers in many innovative projects, making new technologies usable, changing business models with digital solutions, fostering growth, and creating lasting value. At Accenture you can discover what it means to work for a company that understands and shapes the digital world – smart, mobile, and globally connected. This results in exciting fields of activity where innovations are developed and actually implemented: from e-ticketing, smart meters, and energy grid control to an e-government infrastructure or a citizen portal, from mobile health solutions to electronic border clearance and trading platforms, or microcredit for female entrepreneurs.

Allow us to introduce ourselves: Accenture

Don’t worry, we’re not that formal. On the contrary: we are on first name terms – up to the highest level of management. This is part of our corporate partnership culture. But more on that later.

To achieve peak performance and to stay ahead of the pack, we need people with commitment – who think for themselves and want new opportunities and challenges, who are ready to develop ideas and shape the future together. To get these people interested in us, and to hold onto them, we focus on a corporate culture that is firmly rooted in our values and where employees feel valued and at home; mutual respect and solidarity, cooperation and team support are what we are about. Whether beginner or experienced professional, male or female, whatever your origin: we believe in a culture that thrives on diversity and the variety of ideas, a culture in which everyone can grow individually as we promote personal strengths.

Last but not least, with efficiency and increasing demands in mind, we focus on finding projects and areas of application that open doors to career needs and take into account specific life situations. In short, we put great emphasis on a culture in which we achieve goals, celebrate success, and take pleasure in our work.

Equality is part of the answerFor us, equality is not a problem, but an essential part of the answer: we rely on mixed teams – on all project and management levels – because we know from experience that diversity creates better results and a livelier working atmosphere. Economic necessity is a given, and we are aware that equality and justice lead to competitiveness and progress. Therefore, your performance is recognized in an absolutely equal and individual way, encouraged and rewarded as with your male counterparts.

These are the success factors Equality does not arise by itself. At Accenture, we have made sure to create some basic conditions for its growth. Diversity is thus a major factor in our success:

Anchoring in our corporate values There will only be great opportunities and interesting tasks for everyone equally if there is an unconditional commitment to equal treatment within the company.

At Accenture, we drive rethinking forward in a targeted manner: diversity management and working on unconscious bias are an integral part of our management and team training sessions that are specifically tailored to some extent to women. This as well as clear management guidelines help us to avoid inequality and to take measures whereby managers and team members better recognize and remove their unconscious bias in the workplace.

Tangible examples and networking We don’t just show what is possible for women at Accenture and who has made it – we also show you how and provide support at every step, personally, face to face. Our group-wide women’s networks and women’s mentoring program will help you find your way into the team and to establish strong connections, so you can follow your own path at Accenture. And in the company-wide Accenture Women Initiative, in active regional groups on a voluntary basis, colleagues worldwide are committed to the development of career opportunities and advancement for women.

Individual support Individual career coaching and leadership development are also part of the activities such as the provision of specific educational and training opportunities (i.e. self-marketing, communication style) and the program for the reintegration of those returning from parental leave (for men as well, naturally).

Individual solutions We are ready to listen to concerns that arise from individual life situations. Maybe you are planning a family, need time off for a dissertation or additional qualifications, or want to put your skills to good use and volunteer for a long period of time. Whether you want to work from home, take advantage of the working close to home flexitime model, or whether it’s the Parental Leavers Network, Accenture Foundation, or Voluntary Services Overseas: wherever possible, we can help you to actively plan and approach your career – and connect professional, private, and family needs today and tomorrow with your job at Accenture.

No wonder that today so many women enjoy working with us in all divisions and on all levels, and for such a long time – at more than 100,000 of around 305,000 employees, the proportion of female colleagues has already reached 36 percent and we want to continue to increase this proportion. Women appreciate the unique culture and their diverse development opportunities at our company. And of course they actively help shape them. Perhaps you too will soon be part of Accenture – a part of us. We’re looking forward to it!

I had actually planned the consultant job more as a short-term commitment, as a career springboard. However, I quickly found that Accenture also offers me attractive long-term prospects.

At first I worked on a project for online stock market trading, where I had responsibility and customer contact from the outset, even as a humanities “foreigner.” The varied work in international teams and sharing with colleagues inspire me to this day and continue to push me further professionally.

Today I specialize in complex transformational processes in the financial industry and, depending on the project size, I have up to 150 people on the team I manage together with the contact persons from the customer side. Essentially, it always involves the strategic design and implementation of large IT projects. In addition to exciting content, what I also love about my job as a consultant is the challenge to find my way in different countries, cultures, and language worlds where I mediate between the IT and the business departments of customers.

In the past I was often the only female consultant in the management team, and I have wished there were more women in senior positions ever since. That is why for many years I have been involved in the Accenture Women Initiative and now run the Germany, Austria, and Switzerland region.

As a mentor, I always recommend that younger female colleagues position themselves actively, even if self-marketing is not necessarily a female predilection. It is important that they trust themselves and tackle the challenges ahead self-confidently, for example, with the next big project. Nothing qualifies a woman better for possible promotion than success. But success in the job also means courage, willingness to take the plunge, and surpass oneself.

And sometimes you don’t just need courage but also support from the outside: a confidant who acts as a personal coach can be worth their weight in gold. That’s why at Accenture we created a mentoring program that brings lower level colleagues together with executives. Regular communication helps to discover personal career potential and how to best achieve the objectives set.

There isn’t really a typical day at Accenture. Sometimes I have meetings from the morning until the evening, sometimes I sit at my laptop for several hours analyzing system codes.

Sometimes you go to workshops, training, and system demonstrations. Sometimes you work on a project – and sometimes you have the chance, as I did recently, to deal with a new technology and develop practical applications intensively for several months at an Accenture Innovation Center.

For me right now it is all about SAP HANA, a database technology that makes it possible to search large amounts of data efficiently. My focus is on Business Intelligence tools, i.e. reporting and information systems based on SAP HANA. I analyze how well they can be integrated and how well they use the features offered by SAP HANA.

After a period in which I was deeply involved in functional activities, the Innovation Center offered me the chance to become more technically oriented again – and to lay new foundations for future project work. I was enthusiastic from the beginning and am now looking forward to using the new skills in customer projects. As an IT specialist in a male-dominated field, I have experienced that Accenture acts very fair with an emphasis on equality.

More than just a jobAt Accenture it’s not just about doing a job. It’s also about taking on responsibility.

Leah Langheim, 36, graduate in business studies (Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University), Senior Manager at Accenture

“If you really want to make a difference, you will get your chance here.”

Page 9: Your life, your job, your decision! - Accenture · 2018-05-29 · you find your way into the team and to establish strong connections, so you can follow your own path at Accenture

After more than 12 years at Accenture and two years of leadership training, Leah Langheim took advantage of an opportunity for a geographical, cultural, and professional leap.

In 2012 she went to Manila for Accenture to introduce new salary and social benefits (such as health insurance) and bonus structures for approximately 30,000 employees in the Philippines’ IT development, operation, and service centers and to promote personal development, with growth as the target.

“To simplify IT operations for customers worldwide and to provide excellent services, it is important that all Accenture colleagues internationally work hand in hand – with an understanding for each other and for the requirements and conditions in other markets,” says Leah. “As Human Resources (HR) Integration Lead for the HR transformation project ‘Fast Forward Philippines,’ it was important to me to create an environment in which Filipino colleagues use their potential and actively promote their professional development.”

An exciting challenge, both professionally and personally: “After my husband and I had seen not only the working world but also the poverty in Manila, from which children suffer in particular, we decided to support an orphanage. We wanted to change something for at least one of the babies and so decided to adopt.”

But the family had to go through a long process to get to the right people, because adoption is still not very common in the Philippines. “In the end, the relevant government departments and directors were very open to our suggestions. Meanwhile, foster parenting associations should become more institutionalized, so that more orphans have an opportunity in life and don’t have to live on the streets any more. Adoption by families also frees up space for other children.”

Excelling yourself also means thinking outside the box. Leah Langheim has done precisely that and has not only expanded her professional horizons but enriched her life as a whole.

Outstanding commitment

Accenture is an active member of the German genderdax community, a forum of selected businesses of all sizes that promotes qualified women – and focuses on an intensive exchange of experiences, innovative measures, and applied research projects.

The success of our commitment is borne out by the awards we have won:

• Since 2003, Accenture has been among the Working Mother 100 Best Companies, a list compiled by Working Mother Magazine in the US

• The Inspiring Wo-Men Business Club (Luxembourg) awarded Accenture the 2013 Top Company for Gender Equity Award

• On the HRC Corporate Equality Index (CEI) Accenture scored 100 points out of 100 – a perfect score – six times in a row

• Accenture took second place at the European Diversity Awards 2012

Systematic organization

Accenture helps companies around the world occupy prominent positions in their markets. The diversity of our talent is a crucial prerequisite for this, because it allows us to put together a strong team that brings the appropriate skills and experience for any challenge.

Worldwide we employ Personnel and Diversity Managers who in their regions and teams develop programs with which we consistently harness diversity.

Our Accenture Global Diversity Council is specialized in detecting integration and staff development trends, classifying our activities and setting priorities so that we bring diversity into our daily work as effectively and profitably as possible.

11

Page 12: Your life, your job, your decision! - Accenture · 2018-05-29 · you find your way into the team and to establish strong connections, so you can follow your own path at Accenture

I had my first point of contact with Accenture during my studies at the University of Cologne. As part of a workshop on “Brand Germany” I became further acquainted with Accenture at their German headquarters in Kronberg.

What I found especially interesting even then was that we do not only strategically advise clients, but also implement our recommendations, up to the operation of entire systems and platforms. The friendly and collegial approach within the company, coupled with a professional way of working, has also inspired me. Six and a half years later, I made the jump to senior manager and thus to the executive level of Accenture. Today, I lead international teams, am responsible for budgets, develop customer relationships and help new colleagues on their way at Accenture.

What has helped me in my career? Dedication, motivation, good ideas, and certainly sometimes feminine charm that helps break the ice – and the fact that Accenture supports and promotes all employees equally. What’s more: at Accenture, you have your career in your own hands; good employees will make good progress. I was able to help shape my very first project. My former project manager has become a close confidant and coach.

This cohesion, mutual support, networking, and sharing of knowledge is very important at Accenture. I had to learn from the beginning that Accenture is a company where colleagues work together and not against each other, professionalism is paramount, but the human factor is not neglected. For me this mixture makes Accenture an exceptional company and motivates me every day.

When I joined Accenture, out of 23 new colleagues only three were women. Today we are at 40 percent – and there is no reason why this proportion won’t increase in the future.

I have personally never experienced not being taken seriously by clients or colleagues. On the contrary, I often have the feeling that it is advantageous to work in an industry where there are fewer women. As a Solutions Architect and Consultant, I can also bring my stakeholder, change management, technical, and leadership abilities to bear in male-dominated environments.

One thing I have learned at Accenture, however: it is possible and important to take charge of your own career-planning assertively instead of waiting for someone else to do it for you. Many women do a good job and think that it has already been noticed by their boss. A miscalculation. Men love to talk about themselves and their achievements; I have copied this. It helps tremendously to draw attention to yourself, but subtly.

A special opportunity for me was to go to India for two years and to get our colleagues in our offshore delivery centers in shape for cooperation with Western clients and teams in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland – both culturally and professionally. My husband and my children were enthusiastic about this adventure. Thanks to their curiosity and a sophisticated support system I was able to work full time for a few months in a very exotic environment. My third child was even born in India.

What impressed me was how little complaining there was and how much they grasped when it came to improving skills and performance. Today, back home, I direct the Solution Architecting for System Integration in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and – conversely – I get the local teams in shape for cooperation with India – culturally and technically. The experience abroad and this can-do attitude have changed me and my view of the world for good.

“As Women Initiative Lead for Switzerland, I often notice that many women communicate too late or not at all what they can do and what they want. It is so important to say what you can do, instead of making yourself seem smaller than you are. Especially in Switzerland, we support female colleagues in this way with the Women Initiative: we try to clarify the importance of networking and the added value that courses offer. Because if children are involved, private life often takes precedence over a networking opportunity.”

Susanne Hager, Senior Manager and Women Initiative Lead Switzerland at Accenture

The Accenture Women InitiativeGroup-wide women’s networks and mentoring programs help systematically incorporate female colleagues into the company and forge strong connections. In the Accenture Women Initiative, colleagues around the world get involved on a voluntary basis for the development of vocational programs and promotion especially for women.

16

“What drives and motivates me is to help women realize their potential and to find their path. There is still plenty to do – both inside and outside our company. Reconciling family and career is only one of many topics. Overall, it’s about the fair distribution of tasks between the sexes – in the family and at work – and it’s important to demonstrate and exemplify this.”

“Accenture has an open and diverse culture. No differences are made between women and men. This is the basis. You get the chance to discover that you can do a lot more than you think you can. In addition, there are mentoring and female leadership programs for high potentials and opportunities for networking and exchange between women – which is exactly what matters most to me with the Women Initiative in Austria.”

Accenture sees it as a duty to help people around the world fulfill their potential and find their path. This requires – both inside and outside the company – taking active responsibility and creating initiatives as well as ensuring a sustainable contribution to society.

Therefore, for example, we are also an initiative partner of SBW e.V. in Germany. The program supports women from marginal economic zones (re)integrate into the economy. It supports women in the process of career transition, gives them access to seed loans in difficult situations that they would otherwise never receive, and assists female entrepreneurs in the first three years with an innovative service concept.

Special feature: Accenture provides – pro bono – staff for organizing, fundraising, and micro credit management for SBW e.V. and helps with infrastructure and resources.

In addition, the partnership offers staff the opportunity for corporate volunteering, i.e. volunteering in their own sphere, such as in the implementation of SBW seminars and workshops or mentoring female entrepreneurs.
