I will tell you that it is very, very gratifying to look back over this last year, the 78th in
our School’s history and my first as headmaster. We are blessed with outstanding students
who just become more remarkable every year. They are supported, guided and challenged
by the finest boarding school faculty any new head could possibly hope for. The Fountain
Valley School is stewarded by a wise board and sustained by generous benefactors
and alumni.
As an alumnus, I feel that our giving is motivated by a sense of gratitude for
the transforming experience we enjoyed as students on this beautiful campus. But these
sustaining gifts reach far beyond our own memories. Our gifts are building the future by
leveraging this School’s ability to open young minds and provide transformative experi-
ences for a new generation of students who go on to change the world.
Among the many high points of this last year, consider that enrollment rose by 10
percent, and that total Annual Fund dollars given rose by 14 percent, led by increases in
excess of 20 percent by alumni and parents, along with 100 percent participation rates
by faculty and trustees.
Thanks to annual giving, the study of Mandarin has become a reality and the Learning
Center has been established. Girls lacrosse has begun and boys ice hockey is coming
this year. Thanks to new capital gifts, the Hacienda dining room has been renovated, an
indoor riding arena has been built, a 400-meter track is being laid, the Lewis Perry Jr.
Chapel is being extended, and a welcome center will now greet visitors as they enter the
campus. Thanks to current and planned gifts to endowment,
our beautiful campus is being preserved and the School’s
progress can be sustained into the future. Thanks to your
gifts, this is a school on the move.
We could not have been successful without the leadership of
our Trustees, Class Agents and Parents Fund volunteers. They
reached out to us and encouraged us to join together to move
this School forward. In particular, I would like to thank Development Committee Chair Jim
Dulin ’76 (Hunter ’07, Tyler ’09 and Callie ’11) and Annual Fund Chair Greg Osborne
’81 for their enthusiasm, optimism and energy. I would also like to thank Board President
Jim Scott ’68 (James ’95, Courtney ’99 and Dana ’05) for his vision and leadership.
On behalf of the students, faculty and staff, please accept my thanks for your support.
Giving does make greatness, and I extend an open invitation to you all to come to
Fountain Valley and see your generosity at work and the greatness it has brought to our
School.
Sincerely,
Craig W. Larimer Jr. ’69, Headmaster

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Fountain Valley School I would like to thank every-
one who contributed to making 2007-08 such a successful and generous year. Fountain
Valley is a small school but fills such a large space in the hearts of those of us who are
connected. It has changed our lives and the lives of our family and friends. The dream of
Elizabeth Sage Hare, Francis Froelicher and so many who have followed remains vital
because of your commitment and generosity.
We completed a successful Annual Fund drive because of 100 percent board and fac-
ulty participation, hard-working Class Agents, giving parents and grandparents, and
the great Casa Serena Society! The Annual Fund is so important to our School because
tuition alone cannot sustain the best faculty, right mix of students and uniquely magnifi-
cent campus and facilities that are FVS. Thanks to the great leadership and their effort.
In the past year we have seen the power of the generosity of a few who have made
special gifts to FVS. The indoor riding arena made possible by the Lovelace family will
transform the riding program. The dining hall improvements that Jerry Frautschi ’49
and Pleasant Rowland made possible will allow our community the highest quality
experience every time they gather for a meal. The expansion of the Lewis Perry Jr. Chapel
inspired by the Thatcher family will give our larger student body the ability to gather
comfortably in that special place. And the track made possible by the Stoot family will
give our runners a place fit for their triumphs. Again, thanks to these important donors!
The foundation of our School’s stability and sustainability is
its endowment. Generous and often quiet donors continue
to add to this critical asset. Occasionally we are reminded of
how lasting and powerful a testament to one’s belief in FVS
is made by including our School in our estate plans. You
can rest assured that the Trustees are committed to careful
stewardship of these important gifts.
Lastly, I would like to thank Craig Larimer ’69 for his leadership of our School. As our
first alumnus headmaster, Craig understands our history and the legacy left by others.
He also sees a great future and is solidly leading the School toward its realization.
Thank you to all for your strong support of Fountain Valley School.
Sincerely,
Jim Scott ’68, Board President
(James ’95, Courtney ’99, Dana ’05)

Dear alumni and Friends of Fvs:

Two years ago, Ann Carson’s AP Environmental
Science class did a rough calculation of the School’s
“carbon footprint” as a class project. In order to
accomplish this, the class analyzed six months of
utility bills and determined the mass (in metric tons)
of carbon emitted through our electricity, natural gas
and gasoline* consumption.
The goal was to use this study as a baseline, then
later determine ways that the School could reduce its
energy use and thus the amount of carbon dioxide
emitted. Carbon dioxide has been firmly linked to
climate change by the Nobel Prize winning Intergov-
ernmental Panel on Climate Change, a group of ap-
proximately 2,000 climate scientists from more than
70 countries.
This fall, Carson’s class repeated the calculation
using data from 2007-08 as a comparison. The results
show that both natural gas and electricity use
decreased, and the School’s carbon emissions fell by
a total of 8.4 percent, if bus gasoline is counted, and
10.9 percent, if it is not. (Gasoline use appears to
have increased since 2006-07, although the School
did not have complete data that year – see notes on
the following data.)

Ca r b o n Fo o t p r i n t – De C r e a s i n g C o2 e m i s s i o n s at FVs
Some reasons the footprint
may have decreased include:
1. Increasing the use of
compact fluorescent bulbs
throughout campus -
approximately 150 bulbs
installed in spring of 2007.
These bulbs are four times
as efficient as regular
incandescent bulbs.
. Encouraging lifestyle
changes in the community,
from turning out lights to
turning off computers and
taking shorter showers.
Conservation Corps and
the AP Environmental
Science class are doing this
with signage and other
awareness methods.
Ideas to further reduce the
FVS footprint include:
1. More efficiently heating
and cooling buildings, incor-
porating energy conservation
strategies like programmable
thermostats, weatherstripping,
etc. Last year, the School
received a grant to conduct
an energy audit of two dorms
on campus, providing infor-
mation about ways to save
energy across campus.
. Increase FVS recycling.
In the past, we had more
limited access to recycling
(paper, #1 and 2 plastic,
aluminum/steel cans and
cardboard.) As of September
2008, the School can recycle
just about everything, includ-
ing #1-7 plastic and glass.
While this will not show in
calculations, recycling uses
far less energy, hence should
decrease the School’s contri-
bution of greenhouse gasses.
. Encourage more day
students to ride our day
buses rather than drive
personal cars.
*Note on the data: • Electricity and natural gas represent lighting, electrical power, heating and cooling for all buildings on campus. • Gasoline only represents FVS bus use and does NOT include personal vehicles driven by faculty and students.
The 2006-07 data is taken from an average of one month, so is less accurate than the 2007-08 data, which reflects each month’s gasoline use. • For calculations, 12.06 lbs CO2 = 1 hundred cubic feet of natural gas, 1.93 lbs CO2 = 1kwh of coal-fired electricity, 19.5 lbs CO2 = 1 gallon gasoline,
2205 lbs = 1 metric ton (Source = www.carbonfund.org)

For his holistic and innovative approach to cattle ranching, rukin Jelks ’46 was named the
2004 Cattleman of the Year by the Arizona Cattle Growers Association. He uses a method of grazing cattle on his 8,000-acre Diamond C Ranch much like herds are managed in South Africa, pasturing cattle in one area and using a whistle to call them when it is time to move to the next pasture. The result is vigorously tilled land and fresh, nutritious pastures. Jelks says, “Holistic management is essential for anyone involved with land management and stewardship, and a valuable guide for those seeking to make better decisions within their business, community, or any aspect of their lives.” Rukin credits his FVS education as being a great influence in his “successful adventure in life” and giving him the “confidence at an early age to cope gracefully through life.”

Fountain Valley School gratefully accepts both
unrestricted and restricted gifts. Unrestricted gifts
provide FVS important flexibility to support the
current highest priority, whereas restricted gifts are
applied to a particular project or program specified
by the donor, such as faculty salaries, scholarship or
campus maintenance. Gifts may be designated for
one of the following four categories.
Fvs annual Fund
The Annual Fund is Fountain
Valley’s annual fundraising
priority and a vital source of
revenue. Every dollar raised
goes to support the annual
operating budget and provide
the very best teaching and
educational experiences for
FVS students.
endowment
Contributions by vision-
ary donors to the School’s
endowment serve as both a
permanent source of income
and a long-term investment
in the well-being of Fountain
Valley. One of the tenets of
the FVS Strategic Plan is to
build endowment. The Board
of Trustees’ goal is to preserve
the principal value of gifts to
endowment for the future.
FVS has a comprehensive in-
vestment and spending policy
that governs investments and
ensures the most effective
management and spending of
the endowment.
Capital needs
Fountain Valley School regu-
larly seeks funding for capital
projects including new build-
ings and renovations, pro-
gram and equipment needs,
and maintenance of existing
facilities. Recent examples are
the new indoor riding arena,
outdoor track, welcome cen-
ter, and expansion/renovation
of the dining room and the
Lewis Perry Jr. Chapel. Future
needs include an athletic com-
plex, faculty housing and a
performing arts facility.
elizabeth sage hare society – Deferred gifts
Elizabeth Sage Hare was the
legendary “founding mother”
of Fountain Valley School and
our planned giving society
bears her name. Today, we
invite visionary donors to in-
clude Fountain Valley School
in their estate planning via
bequests, charitable remain-
der trusts and pooled income
funds, as members of the Eliz-
abeth Sage Hare Society.

In 1978, a group of FVS alumni, parents and friends of the School created the Casa Serena Society as a means of encouraging and recognizing exemplary support of Fountain Valley’s Annual Fund. “Casa Serena” means serene home, and is the original name given to the Hacienda building of the Bradley Ranch purchased by Elizabeth Sage Hare for FVS. Since the society’s beginnings, members collectively have contributed more than $12 million to the Annual Fund, thus supporting scholarship, faculty salaries and the richly diversified curriculum that is the hallmark of a Fountain Valley education. Casa Serena Society giving accounts for approximately 88 percent of annual giving, and Fountain Valley is indebted to these 249 members for their critical sustenance of the School’s fiscal strength.
On Feb. 21, 2008, approximately 100 society members from across the nation gathered at the Broad-moor Hotel for a 30th Anniversary celebration dinner. Guests were treated to musical performances by students and a commemorative raku bowl specially created by alumnus ceramicist Mark Wong ’86. The evening was capped by a surprise rendition of the School song, “Jerusalem,” performed by alumni members of the original School choir.
Fountain Valley School is deeply grateful to all past and current members of the Casa Serena Society for assuring the School’s longstanding position as a leader in secondary education.

What started in 1999 as emilie davidson hoyt ’93’s passion for skin care and the benefits of
aromatherapy developed into LATHER, an international company that includes a collection of all-natural ingredient skin care products, a chain of retail boutiques and a full service day spa in the heart of New York City. Delta Airlines and several hotels feature LATHER products for their guests. LATHER adheres to strict environmental policies, does not test on animals and offers customers discounts for recycling their empty containers. Another company policy is to give back to the community, and they partner with several worthy organizations in fund-raising efforts. About her Fountain Valley School experi-ence, she reflects, “FVS helped me develop my beliefs and passions in life and that has made all the difference.”

Chapel With a lead gift from Dr. and Mrs. Darryl Thatcher ’55 and his family, work has begun on an addition to the Lewis Perry Jr. Chapel, which was originally completed in late 1960. With increased enrollment, space has be-come tight in the student-built chapel during All-Schools and other celebrations.
Dining Room
The renovation of the FVS Dining Room was
made possible by the generous support of
Pleasant Rowland and Lifetime Trustee Jerry
Frautschi ’49. Unveiled in August 2008, the
additions are highlighted by a 12’ extension
on the west side of the dining hall with colon-
nade-style windows, allowing natural light
to stream in. Two ADA restrooms have been
added, along with a new serving area, pizza
oven, and a covered entrance on the east side.
Indoor Riding ArenaConstruction is nearly
complete on the new indoor riding arena, which will be
utilized by the School’s Eng-lish and Western equestrian
programs. The new facility is a 130’ x 300’ steel clear-span
indoor arena that includes stables, tack rooms, offices and classroom space. The arena is made possible by a lead donation from the
Lovelace family.
Outdoor Track
For the first time in School history, FVS athletes
will have an outdoor track on which to train
and compete. This exciting new addition is made
possible by a donation from the Stoot family
(FVS Trustee Fred Stoot, Janette, Dan ’07,
Steven ’09, Jenny ’11). The track will be located
just south of the administration building.

For every alumni in these classes who made a gift at the Casa Serena Society level ($1,500 or more), Board President Jim Scott ’68 donated $250 to one of the endowment funds named for a beloved master. Twenty-seven alumni responded to the challenge, and of these, seven were new Casa Serena Society members. A total of $68,818 in Annual Fund dollars was generated from these donors, and an additional $6,750 was donated by Scott for the following Fountain Valley endowments:
The Deck Cheney Endowment supporting the riding program
The F. Martin Brown Endowment for the teaching of science
The C. Dwight Perry Endowment for scholarship
The Jane and Charles F. Emery ’38 Scholarship Fund
The Lewis Perry Jr. Endowment for a humanities teaching chair
The School is grateful for this additional $75,568 in support from Jim Scott ’68 and alumni from his era.

President Eisenhower granted a pardon to Charlie Swift ’37 after he spent a year in federal
prison for refusing to register for the draft in protest over World War II. The pardon made it possible for Swift to go on and get his medical license. He worked in Tanzania for eight years where he taught medical school and, as the only psychiatrist in the country, organized nationwide psychiatric services. Swift names this as the most grati-fying experience of his life. His interest in non-violence grew in part from Founding Headmaster Froelicher’s public speaking class. “I’m sure these interests were nour-ished by the fact that Mr. F. was a Quaker,” he says. Three years ago, a German chapter of “The Fellowship of Reconciliation” invited him to join their group on a five-week tour of speaking engagements throughout Germany discussing their experiences and perspectives during World War II. Swift lives in Durango, Colo., where he is currently active in organizing the Southwest Colorado Peace and Justice Coalition.

To motivate increased alumni giving, Trustee Jim Dulin ’76 matched dollar-for-dollar up to $50 for any new gifts and any increased amounts over last year’s gifts. Twenty-eight alumni responded to the challenge, with their increased giving totaling $9,141. Jim added $2,500 in matching funds. The grand total of $11,641 offers a nice boost to 2007-08 annual giving. Special thanks go to Jim Dulin ’76 and to all the alumni who supported his challenge.

Striving to raise the level of their class’s participation in annual giving, these three trustees presented the follow-ing challenge: If 50 percent of the class made an Annual Fund gift by June 30, each of the three trustees would contribute $5,000 to a fund named for one of Fountain Valley’s beloved masters. The class achieved 50.7 percent participation, and $27,990 in giving. In addition, Anderson, Howe and Osborne donated a total of $15,000, divided among the following funds:
The Riding Program honoring Deck Cheney
The F. Martin Brown Endowment for the teaching of science
The C. Dwight Perry Endowment for scholarship
The Jane and Charles F. Emery ’38 Scholarship Fund
The Lewis Perry Jr. Endowment for a humanities teaching chair
The Hunter Frost Theatre Endowment
Fountain Valley School extends sincere appreciation to these three generous trustee challenge leaders and to all the Class of 1981 donors.

This year of record fundraising would not be possible without the hard work of our 91 class agents. These dedicated
volunteers demonstrate their loyalty for Fountain Valley in myriad ways: keeping their classes unified via correspondence
and communications, generating a successful turnout for Alumni Reunion Weekend, keeping the School informed of
classmates’ news and contact information, staying current and sharing updates with their class on FVS developments,
and last but not least, soliciting and acknowledging important alumni support. Thank you for keeping our dynamic
alumni family strong!

Conservationist
Summer Alger Schulz ’94 is a rangeland management specialist for the Bureau of
Land Management. She works in the Pinedale field office of Wyoming overseeing a million acres, including the greater Yellowstone ecosystem. “My job as an ecologist is to ensure and promote responsible development of our natural resources,” she says. The job is controversial—to drill or not to drill; to graze or not to graze; invasive species man-agement—but Schulz finds the work reward-ing. She came to FVS from Florida and found her passion for the West. “I fell in love with the people and the landscape and feel an ur-gent need to apply my strengths and training to the conservation of Western ecosystems and the way of life,” Shulz says. She names a short course on holistic ranch management she took from FVS trustee and alumnus Kirk Hanna ’73 as setting her on her course. “Yes, I do what I do today in good measure due to wondrous opportunities offered by FVS.”

While this is History Department Chair Jake Emery ’71’s 20th year of teaching at FVS, an Emery family
member has been at Fountain Valley School for most of its 78 years, beginning with his grand-mother, Eleanor Emery, who worked for Found-ing Headmaster Francis Froelicher, and including father, John ’44; brother, Roe ’67; and uncle Senior Master Emeritus Chuck Emery ’38. Jake Emery took a 12-year hiatus from teaching for the business world, but came back to FVS in 1992. “I teach because I love the art of teaching,” he says, “the challenges of cajoling students to think and make connections, and also the rela-tionships that come from working in a boarding school environment.” He names FVS faculty who taught him as his mentors. “Without question, my experience as a student at FVS with Dwight Perry, John Raushenbush, Bob Patterson, John Munger and Charles Emery molded and continues to mold what I try to do in the classroom, on the athletic field or in everyday conversations with students.”

PhysiCian For human rights
Christopher Guerry ’93 was working with backpack medical teams in Burma as a fellow for the Johns Hopkins Center for Public Health and Human Rights when Physicians for Human Rights contacted him. He
was asked to assist in the investigation of human trafficking and the associated HIV/AIDS risks for Burmese and Hill Tribe women. Guerry conducted interviews in safe houses along the Thai-Burma border with women who had been victims of trafficking, exploitative labor or sexual exploitation. The final report was ultimately presented by PHR to the House International Relations Committee and became an essential component of the U.S. State Department’s position on Burma. When asked why he does this work, Guerry says: “The simple answer is that I believe in the values of the project. Beyond that I can only say that from my years on the border, I have seen human nature at its worst, most exploitative and violent. Those who had the strength to offer their stories shared a belief that change was dependent on their collective voice reaching beyond the chaos of their immediate lives. It is difficult to measure the impact of such a report, but given the absolute control of information by the ruling military junta, there is an inherent value in the reporting process itself, one of resistance.” It was in Guerry’s senior year at FVS that his interest in international medicine was awakened. “I can easily say that FVS provided the ideal environment for developing an early vision of this career,” he says.

Dr. Jonathan ormes ’57 has turned his attention to educat-ing others on how the growing
population and affluence have contributed to global warming and environmental damage. “Now that I no longer work for NASA,” he says, “I wanted to do something more relevant during my retirement years. I describe the science we did as ‘building the cathedrals of the 20th century.’ These are big uplifting ideas and instruments that produce beautiful images and new scientific knowledge that may someday impact people. But sometimes I wondered what good it did to improve life on Earth.” Ormes has developed a presen-tation, “Population, Affluence and Global Warming,” which he delivers to seminars and groups. “I try to raise ethical and moral issues,” Ormes says. “I take a global perspective and a long term perspective and try to be objective and balanced.” He says his time at FVS was “wonderful,” adding, “It taught me how to grapple with a complex problem involving not only scientific methods, data and facts, but also human behavior, commu-nication skills and leadership.”

not have been achieved without the dedicated work of the 37 members of the Parents Fund Volunteers team. Fountain

El Pomar Foundation in Colorado Springs has been improving the quality of life for the citizens
of Colorado since it was formed by Spencer and Julie Penrose in 1937, and the Tutt family has been part of El Pomar from the beginning. r. thayer tutt Jr. ’73 is currently president and chief investment officer of the foundation, responsible for the management of a $570 million endowment. In 2008, El Pomar will grant more than $24 million to Colorado nonprofit organizations. Tutt says, “My father instilled in me the importance of protecting and promoting the legacy of Spencer and Julie Penrose—to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Colorado. I cannot forget that I actually enjoy the competitive aspect of managing money, too!”

Joanne mariner ’80 travels the world as terrorism and counter terrorism program director for
Human Rights Watch. She leads a unit that monitors abuses related to terrorism committed by militant groups, as well as abuses committed by governments in fighting terrorism. Mariner’s group has issued recent reports on the torture of terrorism suspects in Egypt and Taliban violence against civilians. Mariner credits Fountain Valley for giving her a good founda-tion in pursuing her career goals saying, “A good human rights lawyer must be able to think and write clearly and effectively.”

The School fostered my commitment to public service, and provided me with countless oppor-tunities to learn about the environment, culture and legacy of Colorado and the West.”

This year’s Distinguished Casa
Serena Society Member is
tony combs ’58. The award is the School’s highest honor created to
recognize leadership giving. Headmaster Craig W. Larimer Jr. ’69
presented Combs with the award during the Casa Serena Society
reception at Reunion 2008.
Combs has been a Casa Serena Society member for 19 years and has
been a generous and loyal FVS donor for three decades. He enjoyed
his three years at Fountain Valley, entering FVS from Graland School
in Denver. His application noted that he was 5 feet, six inches tall and
weighed 115 lbs, but he still played football and hockey. The year-
book quipped that he was president of “The Rush to Breakfast Club”
and that he was a strong advocate of coeducation.
While at FVS, he was known for his knowledge of airplanes, and he used
that knowledge following graduation at Parks College of Aeronautical
Technology. Coincidentally, his land development company owned
the property upon which Denver International Airport was built.
Combs’ commitment to the School as a graduate shows dedication
and enthusiasm. He served as a trustee for two terms (1988-1995
and 1996-2002) and was a class agent for 10 years. In the 1980s he
held an annual “Icebreaker” picnic in Denver each August to welcome
new Denver students and their families to the School. He also hosted
regular alumni gatherings of the FVS Denver lunch club.

When four daughters were looking for the perfect gift
for their father, guess what they came up with? A named
endowment at Fountain Valley School.
In celebration of his 85th birthday, Frederick H. von
Stade ’42’s daughters, Melissa von Stade, Dudley Mason,
Caroline von Stade and Frances Downing, created The Frederick
H. von Stade Music Endowment.
Frederick H. von Stade had shared with his
family that his years at FVS were the most
influential of his life. He was from Westbury,
N.Y., and it was noted in his yearbook that
he came to the West “with a hockey stick
to fight off the wild desert Indians of Colorado.”
At Fountain Valley he left his mark as the
captain of the hockey team. However, it was noted that he
was “a musical fellow,” too, and a quote from the yearbook
reads, “Fred played the piano for the enjoyment of everyone
practically every evening after dinner, and he was the secretary
of the Glee Club, directed by Mr. Ernest Kitson.”
It is a fitting coincidence that Mr. von Stade’s initials are
the same as those of his alma mater. When his family
presented him with his gift, they all donned FVS caps.
The intent of The Frederick H. von Stade ’42 Music Endow-
ment is to support the music program at Fountain Valley.
Annually, the director of music, along with the headmaster,
will determine how the endowment funding will be allocated.

our sChool
Located in the Rocky Mountain West, Fountain Valley School offers a college-preparatory, boarding and day school program for motivated students within a close knit and supportive community. The generous landscape of open prairie and snow-capped mountains is a continual source of personal inspiration, as well as a reminder of the opportunities and responsibilities that lie beyond the School’s boundaries.
our mission
Fountain Valley School of Colorado is dedicated to providing a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum in academics, athletics and the arts. Our community endeavors to foster a lifelong love of challenge and learning in an environment of diversity and mutual respect, and to prepare adolescents to become individuals who are open-minded, curious, courageous, self-reliant and compassionate.
our values
Francis Froelicher, the School’s founding headmaster, believed that Fountain Valley School should prepare students “to write their own history.” To empower them to do so, the School seeks to nurture all students in their pursuit of excellence and strives to develop in all students the following core values:
¯ open-mindedness To be aware of the richness and depth of all human experience.
¯ Curiosity To value lifelong pleasure in intellectual exploration and discovery; to receive the consequent satisfaction of achievement and excellence through focused, creative effort.
¯ Courage To embrace challenge intellectually, physically, emotionally and spiritually as a pathway to insight and self-understanding; to stretch and see beyond one’s perceived boundaries.
¯ self-reliance To be responsible; to exhibit initiative and accountability, working independently and collaboratively.
¯ Compassion To demonstrate care and service to others, and to live a balanced and healthy life, enjoying the harmony of work and play.
