Spring into Heel Pain?By Dr Angela Pucci

Happy Spring! Heel pain is very common this time of year. Maybe you start putting the winter boots aside for sandals or flip flops. Or, maybe you are a runner and the nicer weather means more miles outside. Changes like footwear and more mileage equal changes in the tissues in the foot. This can often lead to pain, specifi-cally, heel pain.

Heel pain can be debilitating. It can affect our day-to-day life and our run training. Treatment for heel pain is determined on the proper diagnosis. The two most common causes of heel pain are:

•Heel Pad Syndrome presents as a deep ache in the middle of the heel. It may feel bruised. Walking bare-foot or walking on hard surfaces like hardwood or ce-ramic tile will aggravate the pain.

•Plantar Fasciitis presents as a sharp pain in the heel during the first few steps in the morning or after sit-ting for a prolonged period. Pain may lessen after the tissues are warmed up (e.g.: after walking/running for a few minutes). However, after a prolonged period of standing or activity the pain may worsen.

Treatment for Heel Pad Syndrome is simple; lots of cushioning and stay off your feet (easier said than done)! Cushioning can take different forms. Taping the heel is one of the best ways as it stabilizes the heel pad. Wear shoes with lots of cushion, or, add a gel pad in your current shoes. Comfort and cushion is the key!

Plantar Fasciitis treatment varies upon the person. It would include manual therapy by a Health Care Prac-titioner and some changes at home (such as sleeping with a specific kind of sock and rehab exercises).

If you find yourself with heel pain, seek out a Health Care Practitioner you trust to give you the proper diag-nosis, so you can get the proper treatment. The quicker your pain is resolved, the quicker you can get back to sandal season, or running more miles!

Meaning: To destroy a source of income or livelihood through a short-sighted action.

This saying originates from a fable in which a farmer and his wife had a goose that laid a golden egg every day. They decided to butcher the goose as they thought its insides must be made of gold as well and then they could have all the golden eggs it held within. On killing the goose, they found that the bird was just the same as every other goose. So, the couple lost their means of livelihood. Source: theidioms.com.

Bicycle Helmet SafetyHead injuries are the leading cause of serious injury and death to kids on wheels*. Most injuries occur when a cyclist suffers a fall, strikes a stationary object, or col-lides with another cyclist/pedestrian. Remember—it’s the law in Alberta that cyclists under the age of 18 must wear a helmet (and highly recommended for all ages). Helmets should be CSA approved and worn during rec-reational activities such as skateboarding, in-line skat-ing, and cycling.

Getting Informed•Wearing a helmet while cycling can prevent a serious

injury, or even save a life;•Brain injuries can cause permanent disability or death; •Reduce your risk by always wearing your helmet;•Replace any helmet that has been involved in a crash,

even if it appears undamaged.

Getting Started•Allow children to assist when buying their helmet. Cy-

clists who choose their own helmet are more likely to wear them;•Start the habit early. Young children learning to ride

tricycles need to wear helmets;•Parents must lead by example – always wear a helmet

when cycling.

Getting the Right Fit•Take the time to properly fit and adjust your helmet to

ensure maximum protection in case of a crash;•When worn properly, helmets should fit level, not tilt-

ed up, or down over the forehead;•Helmets should feel snug, but not too tight. To test the

fit, the helmet should not fall off when you shake your head from side-to-side while the straps are unfastened;•Adjust the chin straps to form a “Y” below and slightly

forward from the ears;•Only one finger should be able to fit under the chin

strap when it is fastened;•Do not forget to use the sizing pads included with the

helmet. They will help improve the overall fit, comfort and safety.

HOME GARDENING WITH BARBARA

By Barbara [email protected]

Tall Annuals

There isn’t always room in a garden to add more peren-nials, but something tall may be desired. What can you plant from seed or buy from the nursery that will add height for a single season?

Sweet peas have been in our prairie gardens for gen-erations. They come in many heights, colours, scents, blossom size, etc. so reading the seed package is a must. Sun-loving, and thirsty, they will reach up to 6 ft. in the right location. This plant will bloom and bloom for weeks as long as you cut the blossoms and take them in the house where they are most satisfying on the kitchen table. As soon as you allow them to set seed pods (they are, after all, peas) their job is done, and that is the end of the flowers. The seed can be planted directly into the garden in the spring, but you will get blooms earlier if you start them inside in April and transplant in May, es-pecially if Mother Nature decides to give us a cool wet spring and they find themselves with cold feet. They need something to climb on; netting is best. A tall tee-pee made of bamboo poles tied together at the top and wrapped with pea netting can be very pretty when covered with sweet peas. If your garden includes small children, leave an opening for them to crawl inside.

A similar trellis also works for climbing beans, the most dramatic being Scarlett Runner Beans. They like our summers so much you need really tall poles (one year in my garden they stretched from the top of their poles and into the overhanging crab-apple tree and must have reached 12 ft. before frost put an end to their ad-venture). Some years you get tasty beans, and some years you will have to be satisfied with the brilliant red blossoms. Other beans also climb; one of my favou-rites is the Italian Purple Bean, which always produces

masses of long tasty beans (sadly, they turn green when cooked, but are worthwhile, nonetheless).

Everyone who gardens in pots knows the Sweet Potato Vine, with its lime green or deep purple leaves. It doesn’t just cascade onto the patio stones, you know. If you give it a trellis to climb and spend a few minutes now and then to secure it, this is another one that will give inter-esting and beautiful height to a patio or deck. Further-more, it tolerates shade very nicely as well as poor soil.

Ipomoea purpurea or tricolor, Morning Glory Vine, on the other hand, expects to be fed regularly if she is to provide you with a profusion of bright blooms, a new one each day. These will provide pleasure for weeks in the right sunny location.

When I was in Costa Rica, I was blown over by the lush hedges and arbours covered entirely with Thungergia alata, Black-Eyed Susan Vine. The exact same plant here will climb or trail, depending upon what support you provide, and gives a pretty display from a pot on the deck. This one also is happy in a part shade location. An-nual here; perennial in Costa Rica.

Last of all, we can’t ignore the stately Sunflowers and Hollyhocks. The giant varieties grow very tall indeed and make a dramatic statement at the back of the gar-den or along a fence. From mid to late summer, these guys get taller and stronger, the sunflower also provid-ing seeds for birds and squirrels. My hollyhocks still had bright red blooms at the tip top of their stalks when our first snow fell last fall. Hollyhocks are biennial not an-nual, and bloom during their second year of life, so you need to start them off two years in a row. They self-seed readily and will look after that flower bed by them-selves after that.

Jennifer L. Scott B.Sc., D.V.M.www.sundanceanimalhospital.com

Thirty years ago, as a new graduate, I saw the pet insur-ance industry emerge. Premiums seemed high, and I believed a little money put aside each month it would cover most emergencies. Veterinary medicine made massive advances, my opinion rapidly reversed. I believe every pet owner should carry pet insurance. Pet insur-ance companies have plans to meet everyone’s needs; plans to cover only emergencies with high deductibles and low premiums; to plans that offer complete wellness programs for pets.

Today if you adopt a new pet at most shelters, rescue or-ganizations, and pet stores, you may be offered free trial insurance for a short period of time. The Canadian Kennel Club offers trial insurance through breeders to anyone ac-quiring a purebred registered puppy. In my clinic, we give out brochures for pet insurance to new patients and some companies even offer trial insurance to new patients com-ing to the hospital. Some specific breeds and older pets are assessed on an individual basis, and companies always require a client release their pet’s medical records to as-sess the pet for pre-existing or genetic conditions. A client once expressed an intention to get insurance on a pet with severe chronic skin disease; it is unlikely any company will take this pet on without an exclusion for the pre-existing condition. This is not unlike what we might encounter ac-quiring our own private health insurance. My experience has been that most companies will look at something like a mild ear infection and remove an exclusion if the pet has remained clear of a further ear infection for six months. The peace of mind that comes with knowing a catastroph-ic illness or accident is covered is priceless.

My mother’s dog is the center of her life in her seniors’ facility. Two years ago, it became obvious Maggie was critically ill and I took her to the C.A.R.E. Centre for an ultrasound. Two hours later the surgical team led by a board- certified surgeon removed her gall bladder that had ruptured and started to treat her for bile peritonitis. Over the next week she was moved by ambulance to the intensive care at the Western Veterinary Specialty Centre with a central line, nasal cannula, and many other medi-

cal interventions, all from which she emerged healed. Few people would have been in the position to afford this level of care without insurance, and I watched spe-cialists utilize cutting edge tools and skills to save Mag-gie’s life. That rare case that can only be saved by this level of intervention is why even veterinarians and their fami-lies need pet insurance.

Comprehensive plans available cover all preventative medicine, annual exams, vaccinations, specialized medi-cal diets, and everything else. Today in Calgary your pet can get an MRI, CAT scan, be treated with chemotherapy for cancer, and be referred to as diverse a group of spe-cialists as you will see at the Foothills Hospital. Kidney dialysis is on the horizon. There are alternative practitio-ners offering acupuncture and homeopathic treatments. Rehabilitation facilities exist with underwater tread-mills. Plans are available which include nail trims, dental cleanings, annual blood work, kenneling, the expenses incurred if you search for a lost pet, and even holiday cancellation insurance if your pet becomes ill.

I overheard a client once ask for their receipt from my re-ceptionist to make a claim. As I paused to greet the client she told me that she was insured through a company I was unfamiliar with. Her husband’s employer had a group health benefit plan for all staff. This plan recognizes that studies show that people with pets are healthier and live longer. Therefore, this group benefit plan covered the vet-erinary care of the employee’s pets. As an ardent believer in the Human-Animal Bond, I am absolutely astounded by the evolution of pet insurance in our society. We still can’t get insurance for pets other than dogs and cats, but I believe it is on the way for birds, and small pocket pets. May you and your pets be safe and well and never need the emergency part of your pet insurance.

TAKE ON WELLNESS

Teaching Sexual HealthResearch shows that parent-child communication about sexual health can influence teen sexual behav-iour. In fact, young people who receive health informa-tion about all the parts that make up sexuality tend to delay sexual activity and make safer choices.

As a parent, you may not feel comfortable or have the information you need to talk about sexual health with your child. You aren’t alone: many parents are anxious about having “those talks”.

We’re here to help.

Alberta Health Services’ Teaching Sexual Health website www.teachingsexualhealth.ca, provides you with infor-mation, tools and supports to help you talk with your child about sexual health, before and during the teen years. The website covers a wide range of sexual health topics relevant to parents of children from birth to 18 years old like hygiene, values, healthy relationships, sexuality and consent.

Visit www.teachingsexualhealth.ca today to help you get ready for the ongoing talks you’ll have with your child about sexual health.

RESIDENT PERSPECTIVES

What Kills HairBy Jay Lamb, Hairstylist

Hair is the most tortured part of the body. In many ways it’s just like arms and spleens and belly buttons, but it’s missing two essential things that would have saved it: blood and nerves. Hair gets regular surgery with no anaesthetic; it gets welded, branded and tortured with screaming hot electrical devices; it gets grabbed, wrestled down and crammed into an elastic like a calf at a rodeo, and of course it gets coloured and bleached, sometimes in a humane way, sometimes within an inch of its life. I’m not so sure nature had all of that in mind when it left out blood and nerves — or maybe it knew what was coming.

So, what are the villains? What kills hair? And on the flip side, what will resurrect it?

Things that make hair want to run away:•Bleach (also called “lightener”) can be a blessing or

a villain. In my opinion, bleach is often overused and abused. There are other ways to create highlights in the hair besides bleach, and they are much less dam-aging. There’s nothing inherently wrong with bleach, just like there’s nothing inherently wrong with choco-late (if you catch my drift).•Straightening Irons are one of the great inventions in

hairstyling and I use them. But most have the capabil-ity to reach over 425 degrees. It’s difficult to put that into perspective but suffice it to say that if hair could scream, it would. I’m not suggesting you don’t use

them, but experiment with the temperature and find a moderate setting.•Round Brushes are not inherently harmful, they just

get used in harmful ways. People sometimes roll them into the hair rather tightly, then point a screaming hot blow dryer half an inch from it. “Ouch!” is an un-derstatement. This happens most often on bangs and causes breakage and burnt hair. Always keep the dryer a few inches away, and keep it moving.•The sun, the beautiful sun. Life giving, in moderation,

damaging in excess. When you go on a holiday to a hot place, simply be aware, find balance. Cover your hair as much as you can, let it drift and play in the breeze when you feel like it. Make a conscious choice.•Salt and chlorine in swimming pools are hair assas-

sins, especially on coloured hair and porous hair. But swim, please swim, if you love it. If you can wear a cap, please do. Use a salon quality swimmers shampoo when you come out of the pool and make sure you use good quality shampoo and conditioner the rest of the time.

Here’s what makes hair happy:•Not washing it more than you need to.•Being careful when combing out tangles.•Being careful when putting in and taking out elastics.•Deep conditioning treatments, especially with some

gentle heat.•A good hairdresser who genuinely cares about the

condition of your hair.•Eating well, living with balance and awareness.•Loving everyone the best you can, including yourself.

I’m not sure if that helps your hair, but it feels so darn good, you might as well.
