OUR TOWNS

BENEDICT Once a bustling Patuxent River port on Charles County’s eastern border, Benedict was one of the first designated colonial ports in Maryland established by the 1683 Act for Advancement Trade. Storehouses flourished near the wharves, and ship building began in earnest during the late 1600’s. Between 1817 and 1937, steamboats carrying freight and passengers stopped at Benedict en route to Baltimore and ports south. Benedict is also an impor-tant site on the Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail (www.nps.gov/stsp/index.htm). During the War of 1812, 4,500 British troops came ashore in Benedict in August 1814 on their way to Washington, D.C. After burning the White House and the Washington Navy Yard, the troops returned to Benedict carrying their wounded and supplies. Two British soldiers who died on this return march were buried at Old Fields Chapel cemetery in Hughesville. Benedict is also home to Camp Stanton, a Civil War training facility for African American soldiers. Today, this sleepy waterfront community offers visitors a fine variety of fresh seafood at its riverside restaurants. If arriving by boat, you can tie your boat alongside the pier. If you are traveling by car, the journey offers a rural landscape peppered with tobacco barns and farms, antique stores, and fresh produce stands.

LA PLATAThe town of La Plata is the county seat and was originally founded in the 1870’s when the Pennsylvania Railroad was granted a right of way to build its tracks and station. According to local legend, the town was given its name by Colonel Samuel Chapman, whose family owned the land that would become the areas of La Plata and Port Tobacco. In his travels, the Colonel was so impressed with the La Plata River in Argentina that he decided to name a portion of his own property “La Plata” after the river. Today, La Plata is home to nearly 9,000 people, as well as shop-ping, restaurants and rich Maryland culture.

PORT TOBACCO HISTORIC DISTRICTPort Tobacco is one of the oldest communities on the East Coast and the first incorporated town in Maryland. It first existed as the Indian settlement of Potopaco, was visited by Captain John Smith, and then colonized by the English as early as 1634. Port Tobacco became a major seaport during the late 1600’s and an early seat of county government. The town and port declined in the 19th century, and the county seat relocated to the growing town of La Plata in 1895. Recent archeological excavations have revealed more of this site’s long history. Visit the reconstructed 1892 Port Tobacco Courthouse and the restored One-Room Schoolhouse nearby that was used between 1876-1953, as well as the Thomas Stone National Historic Site, the plantation home of one of Maryland’s four signers of the Declaration of Independence.

POPE’S CREEKPope’s Creek, named for tobacco plantation owner Francis Pope, was once home to a large Native American Population. During the Civil War, Pope’s Creek was a favorite spot for crossing the Potomac River into Virginia. John Wilkes Booth crossed the Potomac and landed here after assassinating President Lincoln. Now, Pope’s Creek holds waterfront crab houses for your dining delight, offering mouthwatering seafood daily.

WALDORFIn 1872, the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad established a station in the fledgling farming community of Waldorf. The community grew considerably after completion of the Potomac River bridge. Slot machine establishments lined Rtes 301 and 5, attracting travelers to the restaurants and motels in Waldorf. Nightly entertainment resembling Las Vegas was prominent. Today, the vacant Wall’s Bakery WigWam recalls the days of old. Thankfully, Wall’s has reopened nearby, where you can still get the biggest and best éclairs you’ve ever seen! When gambling was outlawed, businesses converted their establishments to office buildings, retail shopping centers, technical parks, and spas. Today, Waldorf is a retail-dining-lodging hub and site of St. Charles Towne Center, the largest shopping mall in Southern Maryland. The Waldorf area is also home to the planned com-munity of St. Charles AND the new award-winning, Regency Furniture Stadium and the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, our independent league baseball team.

BRYANTOWN HISTORIC DISTRICTLocated along the Zekiah Swamp, Bryantown was bustling with federal troops searching for John Wilkes Booth after he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Sites to visit include the Old Bryantown Tavern and St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Cemetery, where the grave of Dr. Samuel A. Mudd can be viewed. You might want to follow the Maryland Civil War Trail Of An Assassin for the entire Booth escape route.

COBB ISLANDCobb Island at the junction of the Potomac and Wicomico Rivers at the southern tip of Charles County offers visitors who come by land or water friendly marinas and great meals at local crab houses and family restaurants. The island’s family oriented atmosphere is reflected in the annual Cobb Island Day held in the community every June. Just up the road from Cobb Island is Swan Point Country & Yacht Club, an 18-hole championship golf course. Reminiscent of the great courses found in the Carolinas, golfers share the fairways with deer, eagles, and osprey.

INDIAN HEAD Incorporated in 1920, the town of Indian Head is home to the U.S. Naval Support Facility Indian Head. The town’s name may have come from an Algonquin Indian legend or perhaps to a per-ceived resemblance of an Indian’s head from the air. Over time, both the base and the village grew. Today, Indian Head hosts the annual River Artsfest in June on the village green and serves as the western trailhead for the 13-mile Indian Head Rail Trail.

Tour the 1840 manor house of a prominent tidewater family who first occupied the site in the 1750’s, guided nature walks, history talks, special guests, and children’s activities. Off Rte 210 between Bryans Road and Indian Head. Pedestrian gate provides access to the park year round.

Settled in 1634, Port Tobacco was once Maryland’s second larg-est seaport and was listed on early World Maps. This settlement was originally the site of the Indian Village of Potopaco. Charles County’s first courthouse, Moore’s Lodge, was built just south of La Plata and served as the center of government until 1729. Moore’s Lodge became dilapidated, and the County Assembly directed that a new courthouse be erected at Chandler’s Town which is now Port Tobacco. The center section of the Court House building was destroyed by fire in 1892, and the Court House was restored between 1965 and 1973. Costumed docents tell the story of Port Tobacco from 1620 to present.

The school is the original structure built in 1876 by the towns-people with funds from the county for students from grades one through seven. It was in use as a school until 1953, serving the population of Port Tobacco. During the 1990s, the school was restored by the Charles County Retired Teachers’ Association and is furnished with period items.

Dr. Samuel A Mudd, the country doctor who set the broken leg of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassin, resided here. John Wilkes Booth fractured his leg as he leapt from the Ford’s Theater presidential box after shooting President Lincoln on Good Friday, April 14, 1865, and attempted to flee through Southern Maryland. Today the two-story early Victorian frame farmhouse furnished with original and period pieces, house is open to the public, and tours are provided by costumed docents. The Mudd House is a featured location on Maryland’s Civil War Trail--John Wilkes Booth: Trail of an Assassin.

This historic building recalls the railroad’s impact on Charles County during the growth boom of the late 1800’s. Today the two-room “La Plata Station” and an authentic red caboose sitting on an adjacent track are operated by the Historical Society of Charles County.

Circa 1732-1792. Built around 1760, the Smallwood Retreat House was the home of American Revolutionary War General William Smallwood until his death in 1792. The house was reconstructed and opened to the public in 1958, under the direction of the Smallwood Foundation, Inc. After the war, he was appointed Governor of Maryland and served three one-year terms. All tours are conducted by costumed docents, who are Smallwood State Park volunteers. We also offer the Living History Programs.

Circa 1743-1787. A well-respected lawyer and politician, Thomas Stone was one of four Maryland signers of the Declaration of Independence. At a critical time in American history, he served as both a Continental Congressman and as a framer of the Articles of Confederation. Stone and his wife, Margaret, built their country home, Haberdeventure, in the early 1770’s. The site reflects a Southern Maryland tobacco plantation with a unique five-part colonial mansion and 19th Century farm buildings. Haberdeventure was in the Stone family until 1936. After a 1977 fire nearly destroyed the mansion, it became a National Park Service property. Restoration began in 1992 and was completed in 1997. Ranger-led tours available. Visitor center features ex-hibits, orientation film, sales area, and restrooms. Annual events take place in July and December, in addition to other special events during the year.

The nation’s oldest active parish with a continual pastorate, St. Ignatius was founded in 1641 by the Reverend Andrew White, S.J., who accompanied Catholic settlers to Maryland in 1634. The church and manor house, a residence for priests at Chapel Point for more than 300 years, is located on a 120-foot bluff overlook-ing the mouth of the Port Tobacco River.

Set among fields of tobacco and stretches of forest is St. Joseph’s Church, built in 1763. The eight-acre cemetery contains graves of venerable heroes of the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and both World Wars. The first Catholic chapel in the Pomfret area, was a small frame chapel which stood about 100 yards northeast of the present church. Around 1835, a campaign was started to raise funds for a new church. Mass was said for the first time in the new St. Joseph’s Church January 6, 1849.

Father Basil Hobart received “land, brick, and mortar” from Major William Boarman to build a residence and chapel near Newport in 1674. This was the first Franciscan Catholic church in the colonies. Though Father Hobart’s original chapel is gone, there is a church building built around 1800 that serves as a parish hall. St. Mary’s was recognized in the 30s and 40s for devotions and a shrine honoring the Cure d’ Ars, St. John Vianney promoted by the late Father William Baldus.

St. Peter’s Church possesses the charm of maturity, but the age of the church is not as great as that of the parish it serves, for it was here that Charles County’s third Catholic parish was established in 1700. The site of the old cemetery is one that impresses the visitor with a sense of strength and endurance, as one walks among the age worn tombstones, reading names of those who labored to build the old frame chapel that was used for about 150 years.

Founded by four Carmelite nuns in 1790, the Mount Carmel Monastery was the first monastery of religious women in Colonial America. Three of the four founding nuns, Ann Matthews and her two nieces, Ann Theresa and Susanna Matthews, and their chaplain, Reverend Charles Neale were natives of Charles County. Father Neale donated 860 acres to the Carmelites to establish their monastery; which remains at the present site.

Nanjemoy Baptist Church is one of the oldest continuous Baptist churches in Maryland. Its history is unique in that it is the mother of Southern Baptist Churches in the Tri-County area. As early as 1790, four men from Virginia, William Fristoe, Jeremiah Moore, Andrew Leach, and Henry Hagan, crossed the Potomac and start-ed to preach in the Nanjemoy area of Charles County. In 1791, one acre of land was purchased for the purpose of building a meeting house. All evidence supports that this is the building in use today. For more than 200 years, the church has been in the community.

Among the oldest Episcopal churches in Maryland, Christ Church, Durham Parish is one of the original 30 churches chartered in the Province of Maryland by the Colonial Assembly in 1692. Still in use is the communion service, a chalice and paten of London Silver of 1707, said to be one of the oldest in the United States. The chalice was bequeathed to the church in 1708 by William Dent, owner and builder of Friendship House – one of Charles County’s oldest homes, built around 1680. In 1732 construction began on the brick church that would replace the original log church.

The Port Tobacco Parish was among the 30 Church of England parishes established in 1692. Revolutionary patriots associated with the parish include Thomas Stone, signer of the Declaration of Independence; John Hanson, President under the Articles of Confederation; Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer, signer of the Constitution, and Gustavus Brown and James Craik, physicians to George Washington. In 1884, a new stone church, fashioned after the style of English country churches, was built on Port Tobacco Square. In 1904, the church was dismantled and moved to its present site. Narthex windows celebrate Maryland, the Episcopal Church and parish history. The marble alter commemorates Lemuel Wilmer, rector (1822-1869), an ardent Unionist in a parish that thrived on slavery.

William & Mary is one of the 30 original parishes created by the Establishment Act of 1692. Records from 1694 show that a church was already in existence and was known as Picawaxon Parish. Valued possessions of the church include a silver Queen Ann chal-ice and paten. Records were lost or burned during the Civil War while Union Soldiers were quartered in the church.

When it was created in 1744, Trinity Parish consisted of those portions of King and Queen Parish (Chaptico) and All Faith Parish (Charlotte Hall). The original church was bought from the Chaptico Parish. The parishioners began building a new church and Vestry House in 1751; they were completed in 1756. The Chapel of Ease, completed in 1769, is still used today as the regular house of worship. During the War of 1812, Benedict was the landing site for over 4,000 British troops. Oldfields Chapel was used as a camp ground for the forces who marched to Washington. According to local legend, two Brisish soldiers are buried at Oldfields Chapel.

A patch of the region’s history sits quietly among this humble cemetery. Southern Maryland’s only known Quaker cemetery, the tract includes 31 graves that have gone largely unnoticed since 1871. Quaker simplicity is evident in the plain, gray markers.

Charles County still retains a natural beauty in one of the fastest growing areas in Maryland. With 300 miles of spectacular shoreline, the county’s forested areas serve as ha-vens for birds and bird watchers alike. Bald eagles, barred owls, vibrantly colored songbirds co-exist with wood ducks and other waterfowl, included great blue herons. The Nature Conservancy operates the Nanjemoy Creek Great Blue Heron Sanctuary and is only open for scientific research (with prior permission from the Conservancy).

The Piscataway Indian Tribe made their winter camping ground here. In colonial times efforts were made to drain the swamp for cultivation and the ditches are still evident. The headwaters of the Zekiah Swamp begin here and extend southward for 20 miles, emptying into the Wicomico River. The swamp is one mile wide and a haven for wildlife. Visitor center is open during the summer to showcase the only warm-water fish hatchery in Maryland. 19.5 miles of marked trails for hiking, biking and equestrian rides. Camping, hunting and fishing.

235 acre park overlooks Nanjemoy Creek and offers a variety of recreational activities from fishing to playing baseball with 7 mile nature trail system with observation decks. For the canoeist, kay-aker, or small boater, enjoy miles of scenic marshes that abound with wildlife. County-owned boat ramp offers easy access to the Potomac River and is open to the public year round, dawn to dusk. One-acre surrounding this boat launch facility designated free fishing area. No fishing license required. Two little league fields and one regulation baseball field. Athletic fields are for of-ficial league use-by permit only.

180 acre wood parkland with hiking and nature trails, picnic areas, pavilions, playgrounds, and fishing piers. Wheatley Lake is a 60 acre fresh water lake with bass, bluegill, trout and catfish. Electric motor boat ramp is available. The 2.5 mile nature trail (self guided), fishing pavilions, boardwalks, bridges, and beaver colony observation deck. Nature Center features a 150 gallon aquarium with natural specimens. Fishing supplies, boat rentals, and concessions for sale.

A converted abandoned railroad corridor with 13 miles of paved trail for hikers and bikers provides a unique opportunity to enjoy some of Southern Maryland’s most undeveloped natural areas. Originally built in 1918 as a supply route for the Navy’s Indian Head Powder Factory, this elevated rail bed passes through the Mattawoman Creek stream valley. Site of one of the largest “sunken ship graveyards” in North America, with vessels dating from the period of the American Revolution. The ship graveyard includes 169 wooden ships of the U.S. Shipping Board Emergency Fleet, intended to carry troops and supplies to Europe during World War I. Many have become islands, with their own mini-ecosystems, converting the bay into one of the most unique natural areas of the state. Mallows Bay is part of the Charles County Water Trail Adventures, and Lower Potomac River Water Trail. 1 mile Hiking trail available. Small power boat ramp and kayak launch.

Equestrians - Features include nearly 14.2 miles of diverse riding trails, open fields, a jump course, wooded areas, steep terrain, shoreline, beach rest locations and a trail course. Maxwell Hall Park is a membership-only facility for equestrians. Hikers - All 14.2 miles of trails at Maxwell Hall are open to hikers and nature enthusiasts with scenic views of Patuxent River. Hiker parking is available at the equestrian area entrance as well as a separate parking area on Teagues Point Road.

Once home to the Piscataway Indians, the 1,723 acre tract of for-ests and fields are a prime location for bird watching and nature photography. Mature riparian forest is home to the barred owl. Salamanders and waterfowl enjoy the “greentree” reservoirs, which are deliberately flooded forest areas in the fall and winter. 23 acre lake full of large-mouth bass and other fish. Eight-station firearms shooting range, trap range, and a three-station archery range are open for public use by permit. 5 miles west of La Plata on MD 225.

Park offers a combination of active and passive recreational activi-ties. Athletic fields for official league use, by permit only, include little league and full size baseball fields, and football/soccer field. Wooded equestrian trails and two show rings are available on a first come, first served basis unless there are scheduled events. Facility is available for rent by equestrian organizations and ideal for youth and open events.

A 90-acre reserve located on Potomac River off Wades Bay is the perfect site for fossil hunters, hunting, fishing and bird watching. Walk the shoreline at low tide in search of 55 million year old fossils, shark’s teeth, bones, and shells. Check the tides before you visit as high tide offers very little beach area. Trails meander through the forest and along the wetlands edge; however, they are unmarked and map and compass are suggested. Fishing in spring and fall offer great success with a variety of species but submerged aquatic vegetation makes fishing during the summer months challenging. At intersection of Rte 225 and Rte 224, take a left on Rte 224. Stay on Rte 224 for approximately 15 mile to an unpaved parking lot along the road. The 3/4 mile trail to the beach is across the road from the parking lot.

628 acre recreational area includes restored home of Revolutionary War General William Smallwood. General Smallwood was also elected Maryland’s 4th Governor in 1785 and later served in the Maryland Senate (open Apr-Oct, Sun 1-5 p.m.). Shore fishing, several piers, tent or cabin camping, kayaking, canoeing, picnic tables and grills available. Three pavilions by reservation. Marina (Sweden Point) offers six boat launch ramps, 50 slips, bathhouse, fill station, pump-out station, and conces-sions (open seasonally, call in advance for hours of operation). Several large and small mouth bass tournaments are held here. Mattawoman Creek Art Center; which offers monthly exhibi-tions and special events with local and national artists, is located within the park.

PARK AMENITIES


Charles County offers some of the most scenic bike routes in Maryland. Many have light traffic or wide shoulders and in-clude historic sites along the routes. One great example is the Naturally Historic Loop.

This loop travels along Rte 6, 224, 425 and 225. Begin your ride at the Port Tobacco Courthouse on Rte 6 traveling north to Rose Hill Road.

Follow Rose Hill Road toward Thomas Stone National Historic Site, which is the home of one of Maryland’s four signer’s of the Declaration of Independence. Rose Hill Road will lead to Rte 225 where a left will take you to Myrtle Grove Wildlife Management Area.

Rte 225 eventually will intersect Rte 224 at the Mattawoman Natural Environment Area and left turn will travel to Smallwood State Park and General Smallwood’s Retreat House. This Revolutionary War hero and Maryland Governor made his home right here in Charles County!

Follow Rte 224 South and beautiful rolling hillsides and river-side scenic beauty unfold before your eyes. Wildlife abounds on this section of the route, particularly bald eagles. Charles County is the state’s second largest bald eagle habitat and you are almost sure to have a daily sighting along this loop. Rte 224 will meet Rte 6 and a left turn will continue your journey.

At the V-intersection, follow Rte 425 past Christ Church Durham Parish, circa 1692. Rte 425 will again meet with Rte 6, take a right and follow back to the Port Tobacco Courthouse.

Nationally known as a world-class, year-round bass fishery, the Potomac River stretches along the western and south western side of Charles County for more than 55 miles. In those 55 miles, there are 11 public access ramps.

This little, out-of-the-way ramp has a very scenic setting and is ideal for car toppers, canoes or kayaks. No trailered boats. Located on the beautiful and historic Port Tobacco River, the ramp is simply a low spot in the shoreline with a sand and gravel launch. Parking is limited, gravel road to ramp.

Midway on the Nanjemoy Creek, four miles from main stem of Potomac River. Ramp is ideal for power boaters seeking a shel-tered launch site. Easy access to the river or great fishing in a tidal creek where bass, white and yellow perch, and catfish abound. Creek offers miles of scenic marshes which abound with wildlife for kayaker, canoeist or small boater. One acre surrounding the boat launch designated as free fishing area. Paved parking area accommodates 16 vehicles and trailers, including handicap access. Because of the limited facilities, fishing tournaments of any kind are prohibited. This is a trash free park, take out what you bring. Rte 6 West from La Plata to Ironside. Turn left onto Rte 425, to a left onto Friendship Landing Rd.

Gilbert Run Park is located 8 miles east of La Plata on Rte 6. Within this scenic wooded parkland are hiking and nature trails, picnic areas (grills and tables), pavilions, playground areas, fishing piers, and a boat ramp (electric motors only). The main at-traction is a 60 acre fresh water lake which affords fishing, pedal boating, row boating and canoeing. Fishermen are able to catch bass, bluegill, trout and catfish. Fishing supplies, and concessions are for sale.

The Welcome Center is open seven days a week from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. When traveling Route 301, be sure to take a break and come inside! Ask for a copy of the many statewide publications including maps, attractions, travel guides, calen-dars of events, and more. The Center hosts a wide variety of information on hunting and fishing, camping and trails, cul-tural and historical attractions, as well as information on the civil war and star spangled banner. The travel counselors will assist you with itineraries, meet and greet motor coaches, and make county and state hotel reservations.
