Ohwhatanight!ThestartofIn-ternational Women’s Week in WesternAustralia could not have gone off witha bigger bang. More than 1000 peoplegathered at the Perth Convention andExhibition Centre to celebrate the 100thAnniversary of International Women’sDay through the launch of the ‘Hall ofFame’, which saw 100 unsung West-ern Australian heroines acknowledgedfor their contribution to the community. Over the proceeding month,Western Australians had been asked tonominate inspirational women for in-duction to the Hall of Fame. The appli-cation process involved detailing eve-rything from the woman’s excellencein her chosen field of endeavor; to hercontribution to the community; andher future goals and likely impact. Thenomineeswere then judged by the In-ternational Women’s Day Steering Com-mittee,whichincludedYoungUNWomenAustralia’s Perth Chair, Holly Ransom. The 100 inductees spanned allsectors of society and included notablenamessuchasPerthLordMayor,LisaScaf-fidi and Australia’s richest woman, GinaRinehart but importantly the event alsoturnedthespotlightontothe‘quietachiev-ers’oftheWesternAustraliancommunity.

Thelaunchpartywasanen-ergising celebration of the women’smovement to date, with perform-ances taking the audience backthrough the major achievementsof the women’s movement: fromthe suffragettes through to mod-ern day. The event culminated insurprise guest Jessica Mauboy per-forming a rousing rendition of ‘I amWoman’...thesamesongthatendedthe ‘dancefloor/karaoke’ session inthe function room somehours later! TheHallofFamelaunchwasafantasticeventbutmuchmoreim-portantly than that it was an excel-lent acknowledgment of the pow-er of Western Australian women!

Her presentationwas truly en-grossing,andtheguestswerecap-tivated by her obvious passion forgenderequalityaswellasherprac-tical,down-to-earth,engagingstyle. Oneparticular storyLiz toldwas extremely moving. She toldus about an elderly woman whocameintoadomesticviolencecoun-selling service in Sydney. Whenthe counsellor asked why she hadcome now, after living in a violentrelationship for 40 years, she saidit was because over Christmas herdaughter and granddaughter cametostaywithher.Whenherhusbandcame home from the pub and be-gan to beat her up, her daughter(whowas inher forties)hid in thespareroom, whichwashowshehadcopedwith theviolenceasa child.

But her granddaughterwatched from another room, andafteritwasallover, shewentuptoher grandmother. She said, ‘Look,Gran, itdoesn’thavetobelikethis.I learnt lastweekatschool fromaRespectful Relationships programthat we can ring this number andyou and I are going to go in andfind someone who can help you.’ItwasnosurprisetohearthatLiz’sgoalforlastpartofhertermistofocusherenergiesondevelopingstrategiestoeradicateviolenceagainstwomen.

After her presentation, Liz an-swered a number of thoughtfulquestions from the audience andthen the Mercedes College HeadGirl Rebecca Joseph added her re-flections on Liz’s comments andgave the formal thanks. It was apleasure tomeet Liz andwe hopeto entice her back to speak to ourmembers again in the near future.
