Bling TeamA personal approach helps this jewelry team find the perfect gifts for customers.

Even when the department is busy with holiday shoppers, Leah White, jewelry associate at Store 2791 in Georgetown, Del., shares her own stories with customers. “People want to buy something with meaning,” she says. “If I can help them relate to the item, it helps with the sale.” That personal touch is essential, says Summer Meraz, department manager, jewelry, ladies accessories, and shoes. She’s worked in many departments but says jewelry is a lot more one-on-one. “You’re either spending time with customers while you resize or repair, or you’re helping them find a present.” Those customer-engagement skills help make the department a success. Here are more of their tips:

• Give every customer time to shine. Although many customer needs are small, like ring resizing or a watch battery, giving them time and attention sometimes leads to a bigger purchase.

• Keep polished. Setting mods to specifications from buyers and keeping space between items help customers find what they’re looking for. Daily counts and audits help reduce shrink.

• Bring in some backup. During busy times like Christmas and Valentine’s Day, help from other associates is important.

6 quarts freshly popped popcorn (~3 regular microwave bags)Unsalted butter for greasing pans

2 cups firmly packed Great Value Light Brown Sugar

1 cup unsalted butter 1⁄2 cup Great Value

Light Corn Syrup ¼ tsp cream of tartar 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda

1. Heat oven to 200 F. 2. Place popcorn in extra-large bowl or divide between 2 large bowls. Line

2 rimmed baking pans with foil; lightly grease with butter. 3. In large, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine brown sugar, butter, corn

syrup, cream of tartar, and salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Continue to boil, stirring constantly, until mixture is thick and stringy, at around 260 F on a candy thermometer. Remove from heat and stir in baking soda quickly. Let bubble a few seconds. Immediately pour evenly over popcorn; toss to coat.

4. Divide popcorn between prepared pans and bake at 200 F for 1 hour, rotating pans every 15 minutes. Put popcorn on wax paper. Spread out in thin layer to cool completely, about 30 minutes. Break up into large pieces and store tightly covered.

4 large eggs, lightly beaten

11⁄3 cups Great Value Canola Oil

2 cups sugar 4 4-oz jars of baby

food carrots 1 8-oz can crushed

pineapple, undrained 1 tsp vanilla 21⁄2 cups Great Value

All-Purpose Flour 2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 1 tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp allspice 1 cup toasted walnuts

or pecans, chopped Cooking spray

Flour for dusting pan

1. Heat oven to 350 F.2. Whisk first 6 ingredients

(through vanilla) together in large bowl.

to take advantage of the holiday layaway program. So don’t be left singing the “I Didn’t Get It in Time” blues. Remember, associates also get an additional Christmas discount if they helped rock Black Friday.

“All I Want for Christmas Are Gifts That Rock”

For the Gifts That Rock event on Dec. 16, associates in toys, apparel, home, entertainment, and jewelry will create special displays of top gifts. The keys to successful merchandising? “Holiday signage is important. So is being there—having a counter presence,” says Rasberry Surles, department manager, jewelry and accessories, at Store 2142 in Salem, N.H. “Also, shopability. If it’s messy, I wouldn’t shop it. Pick up and clean up.”

“It’s Beginning to Taste a Lot Like Christmas” The bakery can handle those seasonal baking

needs. Christmas cookies and cakes are in high demand throughout December, especially once holiday parties are in full swing. Baked goods aren’t just for dessert, though. Remind shoppers that items like the Colossal Cinnamon Roll make breakfast easy when they have overnight guests.

to be our busiest Christmas yet for Pickup. Make sure you’re logged in to the Pickup Check-In app and “accepting” customer check-ins on your handheld. Know where those Big Bet items are on the sales floor—like the Nintendo Switch. “Come with a positive attitude and be excited,” says Maureen Chiocchio, department manager, Pickup, at Store 1852 in Woodbridge, Va.

“Hark! The Holiday Helpers Are Here”Holiday Helpers are back! They have

extended hours this season and are now stationed in the electronics and toys departments in addition to the front end. They also get hours in Pickup.

“There Goes Santa Claus!”Tell customers about Selfies With Santa. He’ll

be in stores Dec. 16–17, noon–4 p.m. (You can also plan other Santa events; check with your store manager.) If you’re playing the man in red, consider this tip from a guy who’s donned the suit. “Try to find a clutter-free background and take the picture from a child’s perspective—don’t tower over him or her,” says Charlie Geer, sales associate, sporting goods, at Store 361 in Collinsville, Ill.

“On the Day Before Christmas” On Dec. 24, look for home-stretch shoppers—

including those who may need help deciding what to give at least one kid on their list. “Talk to the customer; see what they’re looking for,” suggests Lyn Donaghy, department manager, cosmetics, at Store 2224 in Williston, Vt. “See what’s hot online, the biggest sellers. A lot of it is the kids stuff—lip gloss, nail polish.”

Strings Are His ThingEnter Store 3608 in the evenings during the holiday season, and you’ll likely be greeted with a warm smile and a Christmas carol, courtesy of Bill Rabe. For 11 years, the 90-year-old associate has used his musical skills on the viola to surprise and delight shoppers.

Bill was inspired to do it after something his store manager told him during orientation: Make the customer happy coming in and happy going out, and they’ll come back to the store. “I thought, ‘That’s my cup of tea,’ ” Bill says. Soon after, he began playing in the store.

The community response has been overwhelming. Customers often sing along or request an impromptu music lesson. Rhoni Soulliere, assistant manager, feels that Bill has greatly contributed to the store’s Friendly score. “People constantly comment on how Bill makes them feel at home when they come to the store,” she says.

Producing Results The produce department is often the first one that customers see, and it can set the tone for the entire shopping experience. Michael Downey is helping his store deliver a great experience in this key area, thanks in part to his training at the Walmart Academy.

His facilitators showed him how to use inquiry reports to improve the produce area, how to stay on track with what his team is doing, and how actions like discarding produce too soon can negatively impact the bottom line.

The knowledge Michael has brought back to the store is driving changes. Produce sales have grown by roughly 15 percent in the first half of October. “In-stock in the department has improved,” says Terence Johnson, co-manager, food and consumables. “Michael is very knowledgeable when talking with customers, and the overall appearance and stock are great.”

Michael’s advice for associates attending Academy training? “Focus on learning,” he says. “Meet others and learn from them.”

’Tis the Season to Be Mary Mary Lou Plesko, one of four original associates at Store 1423, which opened in 1990, is exactly how you’d imagine Mrs. Claus. “She hums along with customers and is very jolly,” says Linda Durfee, assistant manager. Mary Lou’s year-round holiday cheer has another outlet, beyond the store, in the small town of Ashley, Mich. There, she dresses up as Mrs. Claus every Christmas and interacts with kids who wait in line for Santa.

At Store 1423, Mary Lou offers the same kind of individual attention to her customers—greeting each one coming through her lane with a friendly smile to make a small difference in their day. “Helen Walton had a favorite saying: ‘It’s not what you gather but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived.’ I’ve always wanted to live my life like that,” she says.

Crazy for QuiltsA self-described “fabric addict,” Ruth Beach loves interacting with customers in her department. A few years ago, she even started a quilting club to help drive fabric sales and show customers all that they could do with the materials. Her plan succeeded: The club is now 30 members strong, and members regularly purchase their supplies from Store 951.

“A lot of customers have thanked me for inviting them to learn quilting,” Ruth says. “People know more because of what I’ve shown them, and it pleases me to know that I helped.”

According to Store Manager Billy Wade, Ruth’s friendliness and willingness to help have played a role in creating loyal customers for the store. “She’s a ray of sunshine every day,” he says. “Customers specifically ask for Ms. Ruth to help them.”

Making those connections with customers is a source of satisfaction for Ruth. “I have a lot of honest, true customers who love coming back,” she says. “I’m most proud of that.”

A Joyful Career Gail loves stocking shelves and assisting customers.

I find joy in making my area look nice. I’ve worked in homelines for most of my career, and I love it. I know the merchandise well and enjoy setting things up for our customers.

It helps to know what’s going on in town and to be able to react. For a few years, there was a group in our community that held a blanket drive for the needy. I was always prepared with an extra stock of blankets so we’d have plenty for people to buy and donate. I’ve really got my finger on the pulse of the community, and I love that connection that Walmart gives me.

Walmart is one of the best companies to work for. The benefits are great, and the way associates are treated is excellent. I learned from Mr. Sam that people are the most important thing, so when I was an assistant manager, I took time to get to know my associates. That way, I could help them find satisfaction in their jobs or help out with other issues when needed.

Now I’m benefitting from the company’s focus on family. I have become an overnight stocker in order to stay home with my first grandson. I’m excited to start this new chapter in my life.

A Lesson From SamDon remembers Sam Walton inspiring his kids.

I started working at Walmart when I was 47 years old. Walmart was growing fast, and when they opened a store in Carthage, Miss., I became the manager and stayed there for 15 years.

I’ve been married for 61 years. My wife and I were foster parents and raised 64 kids, including four of our own. We built a home with 19 bedrooms and nine bathrooms. Mr. Sam visited and sat on the floor in our living room. He gave the kids a motivational talk that really inspired them.

Now, I’m 87 years old and still enjoy helping customers. As long as I am useful to Walmart, I would like to continue to work here.

Looking Forward James is excited to see the direction Walmart is heading.

I’ve worked in management for nearly my entire Walmart career. I started as an hourly associate when I was 16 years old and became assistant manager two years later.

I have seen so much change and growth during my time at Walmart; however, we’ve never changed who we are and what we stand for. I’m excited about the growth and acquisitions that have taken place recently. I’m very proud of our company and the people who make it great.

Right at Home Barb uses her college education to help customers.

I hadn’t been with Walmart long before Sam Walton came in to the store and asked if I would like to be an assistant manager. I talked it over with my husband, and we first moved to Lawrence, Kan., for training and then ended up in Nevada, Mo. It was the first of many new stores. I learned a lot from each place I worked.

I feel right at home managing the crafts depart-ment. My college degree is in home economics, and I use it all the time to answer questions and help customers. I’ve never thought of Walmart as a job. Every day is a new experience and a joy.

I started working at Walmart when I was in high school, and I’ve worked in jewelry for nearly my entire 40 years. I love helping customers choose something for a special occasion.

I also manage the shoe department and probably walk 10 miles a day between jewelry and shoes. Every November, I look forward to helping the local Masonic lodge. They raise money to buy shoes for needy school children. Then they bring me a long list of shoes and sizes, and I fill the order. It makes me feel good to help.

Scoring big VPI sales is all about the impulse buys, according to Scott McAvoy. “You want somebody to buy something they weren’t going to buy to begin with.” He focuses on inexpensive items with a good markup—things kids will want that parents won’t mind buying.

His strategy has helped him win his store’s VPI competition three times so far, and it’s helped the toys department become a high seller. It will likely help out during the holiday season, too, when customers are on the lookout for items to make Christmas morning extra-special.

Their playbook is the stadium’s master calendar, full of football games, concerts, and other major events that draw big crowds.

In as little as two hours, a team of fiveturns over Action Alley before each game day, with merchandise corresponding to the home team playing next door. That sets the formation for peak performance.

As of mid-October, hardlines team merchandise year-to-date sales were up 93 percent for the Dolphins and 371 percent for the Hurricanes.

Winning New FansWhen Teundra Jones went the extra mile to help a new customer navigate the store and find exactly what she needed, she created a loyal customer— and gained a fan.

“The customer told the CSM about Teundra; the customer told me about Teundra; and the customer even submitted a Letter to the President about her,” says Store Manager Brian Sellers, who didn’t need any more convincing before awarding Teundra a Happy to Help pin.

Teundra prides herself on putting the customer first. “I always use the 10-Foot Rule, because it’s important to show that kind of respect,” she says.

This consistent level of customer service is making a difference. Brian believes exchanges like this one have contributed to increasing the store’s Friendly score over the past few months.
