Director's Drivel by Malcolm McIntyre Another month, and not much has changed in our Covid situation, in fact it
might have even gotten a bit worse. I obviously haven't scheduled anything in
the way of meetings yet, or events since the only way a group our size could even get
something to eat would be a drive through or a socially distanced picnic.. The only
commitment we had on our calendar was the scheduled visit in October to the
Presbyterian facility in Lawrence, and I have cancelled that. Unfortunately I think the
2020 touring season will be non-existent and we'll just have to keep getting the cars out
ourselves. For example, since the last communication with you, I was notified that my-
self and my staff will be working from home until 2021 and it's hard to believe it's August
already. I've been bringing vehicles home on a rotating basis. The Datsun is home now
and getting some evening nice weather motoring. Even the underground storage where
I keep a lot of my cars is only operating half days and not allowing any new vehicles into
their facility. opefully everyone is healthy and doing well. I hope that as the cooler weath-
er comes and folks settle back into their homes that the virus will subside such that 2021
will be allowed us to meet and tour again.
Malcolm
Kelly is released and recouping at home. He has therapy at home three days a week. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

People: You Don't Understand, it's More than a car,
It's a Disease Like a Passion, It's a
Lifestyle
Five months in Covid Coun-ty could drive one crazy. What's your car worth to you? Full size cars are dis-appearing as mid-size cars grow larger. Small cars are tiny and SUVs of every size fill the car lots and sell for a reduced rate to move them. Trucks are the hot sellers and they become larger and smaller. A friend just pur-chased a Chevrolet Equinox, loaded with options for $22,000. Sell or die has of-ten been the motto and still is.
Does anyone know of ap-praisers so that we may re-ceive proper insurance val-ue? A call to a Google Ad
found an appraiser who wants a $1.00 per mile and $200 per car. Consumer Reports bases their values and insurance coverage on the marketplace, as does Hagerty. Others to be found are AAG at 1-800-878-2886.
Tim's Paintworks, at the west end of Grantville offers appraisals but he is fishing this week. Mike Connors from North Topeka, offers appraisals, 785-234-1016. Tom Plemons recommends, Larry Shaw, 234-2966 and both Tom and Larry may be attending the downtown car show as we speak.
When sending off photos of your car for appraisal, shoot the front, the back, the sides, under the hood or luggage compartment and under the car. The VIN and Registration are needed too.

Some quick observations about this photo...Is says Ortho -KC. In my 1934 telephone directory there is an Ortho Photo Co at 1326 Oak St. In the lower right corner it says Kansas City 1935. That makes sense since the Ford on the rack is probably from that era. (ed note: 1933-34 Ford) An oil filter costs $1.65 and a Summer grease job costs 20 cents a pound. How many pounds of grease could a 1935 Ford take? I have no idea. Do you?
What’s the big vertical pole-like object between the two grease racks? A floodlight? There are new Allstate batteries on the left against the wall. What are all the other things to the right of the batteries? You’re guesses are invited. Check out that old wall telephone in the corner! Look at all the new car parts waiting to be installed in the adjacent room. There is a whole lot more detail to identify so get your magnifying glass out and let us know what you found. I originally thought this was on the Plaza but my 1934 phone book show Sears only at 1500 Cleveland. That building is now a Distribution center for the US Postal Service. Was there an Auto-motive repair facility at that Cleveland Ave. Sears store?
This requires more research. I love these old photos.

Cadillac
Standard of the World!
During World War II Cadillac built M5 Stuart tanks, and
parts for many oth-er military vehicles including military aircraft engines.
This is one of a few color ads I found for tanks that worked
for a one page article. Approxi-
mately 6,500 M5’s were built plus a
portion of the 4,731 M24 Chaffee pro-duction split with Massey-Harris.
Most Cadillac mod-els would return to production as 1946 models by October 1945 looking nearly
identical to the 1942 models.

marketers, etc. Submitted by Kelly Flory.

Radio was a popular

Radio’s became so
