BE SUCCESSFULGET TO KNOW YOUR ADVISOR

During orientation, you will meet an Academic Advisor. All Academic Advisors can assist you with your needs, but we recommend that you meet with your assigned Advisor as much as possible. They are the most familiar with the needs of your chosen academic program. Getting to know and creating a relationship with your Academic Advisor is a great way to ensure your success.

You can schedule a phone or in-person appointment by following these three easy steps:

1. Click the Starfish link on MyTCC

2. Click the arrow next to your Advisor’s photo and choose Schedule.

3. Click Advising and go from there!

CAREER SERVICES

We provide career-related assistance to TCC students and alumni. Whether seeking advice on choosing a major, exploring career paths, connecting with employers, or finding a job opportunity, TCC Career Services is the place to turn.

HONORS PROGRAM

Honors courses are open to all interested students. Honors courses are primarily general education courses where you will experience lively discussions, hands-on activities, and smaller class sizes. Honors classes do not require more work or employ harsher grading, but they do aim for deeper student engagement with the subject matter. You don’t have to be admitted to the Honors Scholars program to take an Honors class. However, if you apply to the Honors Scholar Program and are accepted as an Honors Scholar, you will have access to special scholarships, research and service opportunities, and some transfer advantages.

A complete list of eligibility requirements and benefits, as well as an online application, can be found at TulsaCC.edu/Honors.

2. Meet with Your Academic AdvisorNext, seek expert advice from one of our academic advisors to build your Degree Works Plan. This will help you pinpoint precisely which courses you need to ensure a smooth transition to your chosen university.

TIPS TO FINISHING IN TWO YEARS

Our Commitment. Your Success. Tulsa Community College is a great place to start your college experience. Here are some great tips to help you have a successful experience at TCC.

1. Check your TCC email often.

2. Students with full schedules finish their degrees more often than students enrolled part time. Colleges nationwide recommend that students enroll in 15 credit hours per semester in order to complete the necessary 60 credit hours for their associate degree. Students can also choose to do 12 credit hours per semester and six in the summer.

3. Take advantage of free tutoring. If you find yourself struggling in a course, don’t give up! Try our free tutoring centers with experts who can help you understand the material.

4. Meet with your Academic Advisor to make a degree plan, so that you take the right courses in the right order. Then stay in touch with your Academic Advisor to stay on track.

5. Schedule study time each week. You can use our libraries, read in our study nooks, join study groups, or even visit with your professor during office hours.

6. Get Involved outside of the classroom. National studies show that students who get involved in at least one student group have higher GPAs and graduation rates than those who are not involved on campus.

7. Go to class. Enough said.

FINANCIAL AIDTCC is committed to offering a great education at a price you can afford. By applying for financial aid, you can access dozens of resources to lower your costs.

GRANTS

Students automatically apply for grants and many other types of student aid by submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Your eligibility is determined by the information you provide on your FAFSA. Once you have submitted your FAFSA, follow the steps in your Financial Aid Dashboard on MyTCC or visit any of our campus Financial Aid offices to find out what else you may need to do, how much financial aid you can get, and when you’ll get it.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Want to know the secret to getting the most aid possible? Apply, apply, apply. Then apply some more. Filling out applications, from the FAFSA to TCC Foundation Scholarships, increases your odds for receiving financial aid. Read our Scholarship Guide to learn how to improve your scholarship application.

You can view a list of TCC Scholarships at TulsaCC.edu/Scholarships.

WORK STUDY

Federal Work Study is a work program for students with financial need. As a work study employee, you can gain work experience, insight into a career path or job field, money to help with college expenses, and the chance to create good references for future job searches. To work on campus as a work study employee, you must complete the FAFSA.

STUDENT LOANS

Federal direct student loans are a long-term financial obligation. Accepting a student loan means accepting the responsibility to repay the money you borrow, including interest costs and fees. Do your research to find out the total cost of a loan and how long it will take to repay. Make sure you understand what type of loan you are accepting, as well as the differences between subsidized, unsubsidized, and Parent PLUS loans.

Learn more at TulsaCC.edu/MealPlan.

MAKING PAYMENTS

The Bursar Office on each campus is where you can pay your student bill, pick up refund checks, get information regarding tuition and fees, and inquire about a payment plan. TCC accepts payment by cash, check, money order, cashier’s check, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and ACH (checking/savings account).

When you enroll in courses, you must also secure payment through one of the following ways:

Option 1: Pay in Full or Payment Plan

You can sign up online to pay in full or pay cash in person at any campus Bursar Office. There is no administrative fee if you are paying in full up front. You can also choose a payment plan. There is a $35 dollar non-refundable service fee for selecting a payment plan.

Option 2: Financial Aid

If you submit a FAFSA to TCC and have turned in all required documents, you may be eligible to receive financial aid for payment.

Option 3: Third Party Payments

You can use a third-party method of payment under the conditions that the College can verify the payment source or that you can provide acceptable documentation of the payment source. Common third-party payments include Tulsa Achieves, Tribal Nation scholarships, and employer tuition assistance.

COMMON COLLEGE TERMSAssociate of Applied Science (AAS): An associate degree meant to go straight into workforce directly after TCC.

Associate of Arts/Science (AA or AS): A two-year degree meant to transfer to another institution after TCC.

Bachelor’s Degree: A four-year degree offered at a university or college.

Course Catalog: An online manual that includes descriptions of all TCC courses, an academic calendar, list of TCC degrees and certificates, degree plans, Oklahoma General Education requirements, and TCC academic policies.

Co-requisite: A course that must be taken at the same time as another course.

Credit Hour: The amount of credit offered for each course you complete. It is also usually the amount of time you will spend in class each week (excluding fast track courses). Each credit hour is applied toward the total number of credit hours needed for completing the requirements of a degree. Most students must complete 60 hours for an associate Degree. Certificates and AAS degrees may not require as many.

Developmental/Foundational Course: Courses that count toward hours completed but do not count toward a degree or GPA. These classes are here to help students prepare for their college level courses.

Drop: When a student gets out of a class before or during the first two weeks of class (16-week course). When a student drops a course, it does not show up on their transcript or affect their GPA. It was like they were never in the class.

FERPA: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a United States law that prohibits TCC employees from giving out any information about your academics, enrollment, or standing to anyone besides you. You are the only person with whom we can share your information, even if you are under 18 years old or if another person is paying for your education. If you would like for someone to have specific or all information, you can fill out a FERPA form giving permission to certain individuals.

General Education Courses (basics): These are courses that every student must take in order to receive a degree. The State of Oklahoma requires students to take 37 hours of general education courses.

Hold: A hold indicates that students must complete a step before they can enroll in classes or receive a transcript. For example, you will receive a hold every semester preventing you from enrolling until you meet with an Academic Advisor. Other holds may come from Enrollment Services for missing documents, the Bursar Office for missing payments, etc.

Major Courses: Courses required for your specific major/degree.

Office Hours: Office hours are time frames where instructors will be in their office space so that you can call, email, or stop by for questions. You can find your instructor’s office hours in your syllabus.

Pre-requisite: A class that you are required to complete before you can enroll in the next level course. For example, English Composition I is the pre-requisite for English Composition II.

Refund: Money owed back to the student because they received more aid/scholarships than what was needed to pay their balance.

Withdraw: You can withdraw from a course if you realize that your grade and GPA may suffer by staying in the course. You only have a window of time to withdraw from a course. The class will appear on the transcript as a W and will not affect the GPA. However, having too many W’s on a transcript may hurt your financial aid.
