As the new year continues, I am starting to look at all the ministries we have and how we might add new volunteers, add new ministries, and simply get more people involved. The Alpha program is getting going and a number of parishioners are getting involved in this great program which allows people to come and see what it means to be in relationship with Jesus through the scriptures and being part of a community. It calls people to be adult in their faith and to deepen and strengthen what it means to be Christian today. This year I hope to have a Pentecost party to celebrate all the ways the Holy Spirit has “spoken” to strangers among us and called them in a voice they understand to hear and participate in the life of the parish. The first change I hope you will see is the way that we do the collection. Starting on the first weekend of October, (7-8) I hope you will see the collection taken at the usual time with 8-12 people helping. Eight to twelve people will come forward to take the collection. The first group will go as usual, while the second group will silently say a Hail Mary and then they will start to collect. When there are young people helping we will give them baskets to pass across the bench and they will take it back and hand it to the next group. This, we hope will allow even younger children to participate and recognize that everyone who is able-bodied can and ought to help in the parish. The second change will be at the door. First, thanks to our greeters who are already working. We are looking for more help for you so that sometimes you can just come to Mass and not have to serve. If you are a person who comes to Mass early, I hope that once a month you will volunteer to simply stay at the door once a month and greet people until Mass starts. This will be another way in which you can help using your inclination to come to Mass early (strongly approved) to help others feel welcome and fulfill your Baptism call. We need everybody to help make the parish strong and vibrant. Peace, Fr. Murray

SEPTEMBER 17, 2017 - 24th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME | 3

SUMMER READING FOR YOUR FAITH

Have you been reading Rediscovering Jesus? Here are some questions to help you reflect on your reading: • What is the best time/place for you to read and reflect on Scripture? Do you prefer a paper Bible, an online source?

Is there a ‘prayer posture’ that helps you focus on your prayer? • How could imagining yourself in the Gospel story affect your engagement with Scripture? (pg. 119) • Who has taught you how to pray over the years? • Jesus gave us the Lord’s Prayer, but also talked to God spontaneously. Why are rote prayer AND spontaneous

prayer both important? Are you comfortable with both? If not, why not? • Has there been a time in your life when a particular prayer (rote or spontaneous) had special meaning for you? • Why is it difficult for some people to have a conversational relationship with God – to complain to God, to talk to

God about the ‘small stuff?’ (pg. 130) • What would be different “if Christians behaved like Christians” in your family? At our parish? In our town? (pg. 137) • Can you describe a time when you felt the presence of God so strongly that you wanted to dance for joy? When you

knew beyond a doubt that it was a God moment? • Have you ever heard of spiritual direction, or been to a spiritual director? If so, can you

share a little about the experience? If not, what might the value be in talking to someone about your journey of faith? (pg. 142)

• Which is the more difficult trait to develop, humility, docility or being non-judgmental? Why? (pg. 143)

The book can be bought for $3.00 at this website:

http://tinyurl.com/rediscoverjesus (3 bucks! That’s cheap enough to buy a few and give them to your friends!)

We’ve been hearing from parishioners who are really enjoying the book- is the person next to you one of them? Ask and see! Happy reading!

NO CHANGES YET TO ONLINE GIVING If you already give online, you do not need to change the name of the parish- we are still receiving donations through Parish Pay, and will change everyone over at once. Thank you! SUPPORT YOUR PARISH: ONLINE GIVING Giving online helps you to make contributions to your parish without writing checks or worrying about cash donations. You can set up automatic contributions and change the timing or the amount of your gift at any time. You may make pledges and manage your contributions to the pledge amount, and you may make one-time donations to special causes. giving ensures a more predictable income for your parish, gives you a chance to manage your giving intentionally.

SEPTEMBER 17, 2017 - 24th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME | 7

Well… here’s the thing. At MQOA we don’t offer a traditional CCD program. We know that the best source of faith formation for a child is his or her household- and so we pour our resources and energies to strengthen households and help parents grow in faith so they can pass that faith onto our children and youth. Our motto is “less classes, more Masses,” and to that end, here’s what we offer your family:

WONDROUS STORIES Our Children’s Liturgy of the Word happens during the 10:30AM Mass on Sundays at St. James. Children up to grade 6 are invited to the parish hall to learn their prayers and Catholic faith, rooted in the Gospel of the day, while their parents remain in Mass and are treated to the Mass readings and inspiring homilies before the kids rejoin the adult community for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Parent volunteers are needed, and we ask that you add $10.00 to your regular offertory when your child attends. We start Sunday, September 10. Join us for an information meeting (parents and interested volunteers) after the 10:30 Mass on September 17. Please join us!

NEW: WONDROUS STORIES FAMILY WORKSHOPS Families with kids up to grade 6 are invited to join us the first Sunday of each month after the 10:30AM Mass in the St. James parish hall to learn and grow in faith together. Brought to you by our Wondrous Stories team, this is a fun opportunity for families to spend time sharing faith with each other, and other families. Find out more about our WS Family Workshops at our informational meeting after the 10:30 Mass on September 17.

FIRST COMMUNION/FIRST RECONCILIATION If you have a child in grade 2 or above who has been baptized, we welcome your family to prepare for First Reconciliation and Eucharist this year. It starts with First Reconciliation prep, which is offered twice, with one session beginning September 24 at 9:00AM or one that starts October 22 at 9:00AM, in the St. James Conference room. To register your child, please email [email protected] with your child’s name, birthdate, and parents’ names, along with your choice of start date.

CONFIRMATION If you have (or are) a young person in grade 10 or above who has been baptized and has received First Communion, we welcome your family to prepare for Confirmation this year. The process kicks off with a meeting for Sophomores and their parents Sunday, October 15 at 5:00PM at Immaculate Conception. To register your family, email [email protected] with your child’s name, birthdate, and parents’ names, and plan to join us 10/15.
