Pastor’s Note Happy Birthday local church of San Jose! We turn 40 this year. Next Friday March 19, we will gather as a church with representa-tives from all the parishes (Ms. Olive Boquiren from SJV) with the Bishop to cele-brate God’s blessings since 1981. Those blessings include the expansion of schools, parishes, institutes and most importantly new Christian faithful. Join the celebration 7PM, next Friday March 19, the feast of St Joseph via livestream on the Diocesan Face-book page. Since it is our diocesan patronal feast it should be festive (meaning a break from the Friday abstinence). Every day in preparation we will pray a prayer to St. Joseph. Read on for details of our parish’s Lenten activities. A big thank you to Fr Kevin Joyce for all his efforts in teaching us to pray. ¡Feliz cumpleaños iglesia local de San José! Cumplimos 40 este año. El próximo viernes 19 de marzo, nos reuniremos como iglesia con repre-sentantes de todas las parroquias (Sra. Olive Boquiren de SJV) con el Obispo para celebrar las bendiciones de Dios desde 1981. Esas bendiciones incluyen la expansión de escuelas, parroquias, in-stitutos y, lo más importante, nuevos Fieles Cris-tianos. The ADA Team and Stewardship Council would like to provide us with the following update.
We have outstanding news – we have now raised $196,000 for this year’s ADA campaign! 321 unique givers have pledged their financial sup-port, backing Father Joe and his vision to renew our parish and community.
We would like to specifically thank the generous parishioners and priests who pro-vided a “dollar for dollar” match this past week to get us this far. It truly takes a village and we are humbled. Also, thanks to everyone who has participated this year and have contributed to what is our most important fund raiser.
For those have not donated yet, it is not too late and we still have time to run past our parish goal of $200,000 – we are al-most at the finish line. May God reward you for your generosity and continued support.

GOD’S MERCY Today’s reading from the second book of Chronicles contains a sort of “mini-history” of Israel. It highlights God’s mercies in choosing Cyrus the Persian to be an instrument of deliverance when the people were in cap-tivity in Babylon. Despite their sinfulness and the de-served punishment they were undergoing, God’s mercy was lavished on the people in the form of a miraculous act of liberation. The Letter to the Ephesians, in much more theological terms, gives a similar account of a God “who brought us to life with Christ—by grace you have been saved.” The author stresses that it was when we were “dead in our transgressions” that God saved us, an act of pure grace. He emphasizes that it is not our own efforts that freed us from sin (“this is not from you”); rather, “it is the gift of God.” This, of course, is the heart of the entire Pauline corpus, that salvation comes to us by faith in God’s mercy, re-vealed in the death of Jesus. FAITH FORMATION
Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. John 3:20-21
Are you afraid of the dark? It is not unusual for children to be afraid of the dark. Some of you may have a night light in your bedroom. You shouldn't be embarrassed. In fact, it might be a wise thing to do. Suppose you wake up in the night and need a drink of water. If you get up in the dark to go get a drink, you might stub your toe or bump your shin. Ouch! That hurts. If you go for a walk at night, it is a good idea to carry a flash-light or lantern. Even if you are not afraid of the dark, you might step in a hole and sprain your ankle. A flashlight or lantern will help you avoid those things that could harm you. If you have the choice of walking in the dark or walking in the light, which would you choose? I know which one I would choose! In our Bible readings today, Jesus talks about light and darkness. Jesus said, "Light has come into the world." Do you know what the Light is that Jesus was talking about? He was talking about himself. In another place, Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever fol-lows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." You might be surprised to know that some people actually choose to walk in darkness rather than in the light. Can you imagine that? Why would they do that? Jesus tells us, "Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their evil deeds will be exposed." Every day we make choices. If we live by truth, we walk in the light so that it may be plainly seen. As Jesus said, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Fa-ther which is in heaven." What choice will you make? Will you walk in the light or in the darkness? Dear Lord, help us to make the right choices and walk in the light. In Jesus' name we pray. AND DIVINE RESCUE The return from exile in Babylon was second only to the Exodus from Egypt as a founding narrative shaping the Jewish identity into which Jesus was born and in which his church took root and began to grow. If we read between the lines of the two New Testa-ment readings from today, we can see the outlines of this same pattern of God bringing humanity from sor-row into joy: The Hebrews’ slavery in Egypt and the Judeans’ exile in Babylonia reveal a universal truth, that we belong to the God who is “rich in mercy,” and we are assured that “when we were dead in our transgressions,” God “so loved the world” that he sent Jesus to be the way of our redemption, our sal-vation. The Fourth Sunday of Lent is sometimes called “Laetare Sunday,” or “Rejoice! Sunday.” Even if we feel overwhelmed by the darkness of sin (our own and others’), wondering whether God really is working on our behalf, we can put our faith in today’s Word that it is so.
