Principal’s Message

Welcome back to Term 2. The school term started with the release of GONSKI, the report that will set the direction for education in Australia (see “report on a page” in this newsletter) and NAPLAN. You may have heard about the report in the press and the comments that NAPLAN may not be so relevant. This reflects the GONSKI focus on more ‘in class’ data monitoring of student growth more regularly. Currently NAPLAN is still an important test to inform schools where their students are at and where to focus the learning, however if the report’s recommendation of an online, on demand student assessment tool is developed teachers will have access to learning data more easily and frequently.

The report identifies three priorities around student growth, creative and connected learners and an innovative and continuously improving system. Feedback from our external review held in week 1 was around improving monitoring and tracking of student growth. Teachers will continue our improvement work with this focus. In the junior school this will be around a common reading approach with a consistent leveling process, in the middle and senior school, this will focus on timely and relevant feedback for students to use to improve their achievement.

The report also calls for increased prominence of the General Capabilities, the overarching capabilities that are vital for students to succeed in a rapidly changing world. Listed below on the left are the seven capabilities and on the right are some phrases the SACE board have used to describe the capabilities in plain language.

Seven General

capabilities:

SACE descriptions of capabilities:

Literacy I can understand, and be understood

Numeracy I can talk in the universal language

Personal and social I can discover who I am, who I want to be

Critical and creative thinking I can live in possibility, rather than limitation

Intercultural understanding I can walk in another person’s shoes

Ethical understanding I can set the right standard

These capabilities are incorporated into all teaching and learning but are also explicitly investigated in subjects such as the Personal Learning Plan (PLP), Research Practices and Research Project. Developing these capabilities helps students to understand and develop solutions to complex problems. Middle School students are currently working on a Problem Based Learning task looking at the Hillside Mine on the Yorke Peninsula. Students will learn about the mine through research and presentations from Rex Minerals and the Yorke Peninsula Landholders Group and then develop opinions and solutions to the issues. The most important learning for students is that there are many ways to look at issues and many answers, generally there is no simple solution. Year 9 students have also being working hard to prepare entries for the ANZAC Award. Students have researched soldiers and presented their learning. The work of five students has been selected to be sent off to vie for a trip to Vietnam to experience the history of the Vietnam War. Congratulations Koby Poulton, Indilee Pedler, Harper Davison, Sally Page and Zoe Bland for being selected and we hope that one of you will follow in Jess Timms tracks and win a place on this amazing tour. I also had the pleasure of spending time with the Year 12 Physical Education class at Port Vincent. Students completed their practical components in poor conditions without any complaints. Students were enthusiastic in their learning achieving very good results and had fun cooking for each other with no complaints about cleaning up.

We also launched ‘Smiling Minds’ this week, a mindfulness program used by thousands of students. It has been pleasing how open students have been to trying something new to them. Students will have three sessions a week (each session is between 2 and 6 minutes) with some short introductions and debriefs. The app is free and easily downloaded. Teachers are working hard to plan and assess learning. A number of staff are involved in ongoing professional learning:

‘STEM500’ – a primary program to increase Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – Erin

Rose and Andrew Hayman

‘Thinking Mathematics’ a year 5-8 program to develop problem solving in mathematics – Andrew

Hayman and Simon Mott

I am proud of the commitment shown by staff to improve practice and the willingness of students to take up the challenges put to them. Thank you to the families who have attended interviews, it is great to share progress with you and we know that students are proud to share their learning with you. The next opportunity will be the ‘Learning Expo’ at the end of Term 3 for Reception to year 11.

From the Senior School

Senior school Activities Week

In Week 8, our senior school students in year 10 and 11 will engage in work skills development activities. Leigh Rothe and the year 10s will participate in the Careers trip to Adelaide and visit tertiary institutions such as University of Adelaide, Uni SA, TAFE SA. Year 11 students will complete a week of work experience, supported by Alex Flynn. It is strongly encouraged that students consider a work placement in Adelaide to broaden their opportunities.

The year 12s will engage in Study Week, with practice exams and catch up sessions with teachers. It's also the week we farewell Katie Mack for her maternity leave and acknowledge the end of Research Project.

Forms and further information are being distributed to students and we thank our families for their support in activities that enhance our student's capabilities. If you have any questions, please contact home group teachers at the school.

Year 12 Kayaking Camp

As part of the year 12 PE course, students are required to undertake 3 physical practical activities in which they are assessed. From the 9th- 11th of May, the year 12 PE class went to Pt Vincent. Due to gale force winds and storms forecast, instead of the planned sailing the group had a last minute change to kayaking.

Despite the poor conditions and cold waters, the class put in their best effort to apply the skills most of them learned on their camp last year as well as learn new skills in their kayaks. The class also were able to play a number of games in the kayaks including kayak polo, tag and a capsizing challenge. All students had a great time on one of their last school camps and achieved some exceptional results which will put them in good stead towards achieving a good end of year grade for the subject.

Visual Art Trip

On Friday the 6th of April, 9 Visual Arts students from years 10, 11 and 12 travelled to Adelaide to visit the Art Gallery of South Australia and the SACE Art show. Students attended an exhibition showcasing some of the best work from year 12s across the state. At the Art Gallery of South Australia, students attended a forum around how to create a successful folio and practical for Stage 1 and 2 SACE Visual Art and Design. Four former Visual Arts students from across the state presented to outline their experience with Visual Art in year 12. They broke down some difficult terminology and emphasised the importance of idea development, being inspired by those around you, time management and balance in year 12. Students came back from the trip having more direction with their work, feeling inspired and overflowing with ideas. Stage 1 and 2 students are now well underway developing ideas for their major artworks.

From the Middle School The Middle School is currently a vibrant learning place where student’s thinking is constantly being challenged. We have begun our Problem Based Learning topic on the Hillside Mine and students are working towards developing a question to which they can propose a range of solutions. These solutions will be presented at the Learning Expo in week 10 next term. Other things being worked on in classes across the sub-school include topics such as The Vikings, Child Slavery and other impacts of the Industrial Revolution, Inside the atom, Geology, Graphing and Statistics. Teachers have been involved in Parent-Teacher interviews for the last few weeks and these have proved to be beneficial in connecting home and school and improving learning outcomes for students. If you have not yet had the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher and still wish to make an appointment please do not hesitate to contact the school and teachers will arrange to meet with you in the near future. Planning is well underway for the Middle School Camp. This year we are venturing to Melrose from the 20th to 22nd June where we will be participating in a range of activities including developing team work skills, resilience and growth mindsets. It is pleasing to see so many students planning to attend. Further information about this camp will come out in Week 5. There are some students who do not have access to swags so if you have a swag that you would be prepared to loan please talk to myself or Emily Pritchard.

STEM Student Ambassador Connection Day

On Wednesday the 4th of April, Lucy Warren, Ryleigh Verrall and Miss Pritchard attended a STEM Student Ambassador Connection Day at the Clare Golf Course. The STEM Student Ambassadors Project is a STEM Learning Strategy project organised by Department for Education. The aim of the project is to position young people as co-leaders of change and to drive learning improvement in STEM across South Australia. Lucy and Ryleigh are the ambassadors representing the Southern Yorke Peninsula Partnership. They met with students from different South Australian partnerships to discuss ways that STEM teaching and learning can be improved in schools. They also participated in a variety of interactive activities, such as designing water filtration systems. In the coming weeks, Lucy and Ryleigh will be focussing on recruiting a STEM Action Team. Members of the Action Team will participate in future Connection Days and work with the STEM Ambassadors to improve STEM teaching and learning. It is likely that the Action Team will include students from Warooka Primary School and Stansbury Primary School. If you are interested in joining the Action Team, please see Miss Pritchard.

From the Junior School Junior School Reminders The first of our assemblies for the term will be on Friday May 25th. Assemblies are a great opportunity for students to share their work. We welcome and encourage parents and family to attend these. We hope to see you there.

Invoices have been sent home for Footlights Dance which is starting in week 5. Please return payment to the front office as soon possible.

Lessons begin at 8:50. Please make sure that students are arriving in time to be unpacked and organised for the day, before the first lesson begins.

Please make sure that all items are clearly labelled with your child’s name. A lot of jumpers have been left in classrooms and it is much easier for students to locate lost items when they are labelled.

Primary Combined Sports Day At the end of last term 28 students from Reception to year 7 travelled to Maitland to compete in the Southern Yorke Peninsula Primary Combined Sports Day. Thank you to the parents for supporting us by bringing students, encouraging our competitors, and assisting on events. Your support makes these events possible. Our students put in a fantastic effort and showed tremendous sportsmanship on the day. They put in 100 per cent all day and some terrific results were achieved. Yorketown students competed in 13 of the track finals, making for an exciting end to the day. Congratulations to Bailey Warren for winning the 11 year old boys 100m sprint and also to Shineah Goody for winning the 13 year old girls long jump and high jump. Bailey and Shineah will go on to represent Southern Yorke Peninsula in Adelaide later in the year.
