The site is currently owned by the YorkBoat company which run tourist boat trips along the River Ouse

The surrounding con-text is mostly made from bricks and York stone.

Concept- ‘Plugging in’

- The concept is based on the idea of how animations come together - Different departments work on different of the animation - All the elements are then brought together or ‘plugged in’ to create the finished product

Conceptual image of the concept- Fitting all the elements together

- Interaction between each element, for example how public would interact with the private and how they could co-exist

- Adaptable idea of how these elements could be reorientated to suit the surrounding

Structural cores

Toilets

Diagrams showing the concept on my design

Service Lift

Public Lifts

Fire escape exit

This is the load bearing elements in the design. The cores contains the services running through them for example the toilets and lifts. They are made from in-situ concrete and run all the way down the basement and act as foundation

The rooms and spaces in the building are then ‘plugged in’ to the cores and some at different levels. The weight will be distributed down the core and the other plugs underneath it

The different levels and elements that stick out will offset the whole form and make it less builky

Circulation Development

First circulation idea- Building located on the square

- Square supported with pilotis

- Same contour level as the alleyways

- Linked to the bridge and extended walkway

- Another walkway attached from lendal bridge to the square

- Linked to a garden with pontoon underneath it so it will not get floated

Second Circulation idea- Open space in the middle where the design will be situated and public cannot walk in front of the Design so that users will have to walk around the design and admire the architecture rather than walk straight pass it

- The bridge from Aviva has been removed to keep the circulation around the site more simple and easier to navigate

- Private circulation is located to the back of the site where vehicles can enter without disturbing the rest of the circulation

Third circulation idea- Cut out in the square where the building can fit in and look like it is suspended there - Still like a square so that users can walk all the way round the building in the middle and the founda-tion will be below the square

- Services will also be situated below the walkway

Private circulation

Potential site

Extended Walkway

Aspects to consider in next design

Public circulation

Aspects that work well

The space where the design may be located may cause a disruption with the circulation as the public from the extended walkway will have to walk around the design and to get to Lendal bridge

There is currently 2 main public circulation path which are the extended walkway and the walkway from Lendal bridge. The bridge linking across the river will not be used as much as there is not a high amount of circulation by that area

The floating garden can only be access when the public is using the bridge or the walkway off Lendal bridge. The pontoon/garden also appears out of place with the other circulation elements

Volumetric Studies

Aspects to consider in next design

Aspects that work well

By creating an atrium, the fluid of circulation will be altered may be unsuitable for animators who want to get from one side of the building to another

The light shaft may cause reflectance on the screens in the graphic studios. Natural light will have to be controlled into the desired space

The public will not be able to interact with the private studio, therefore opposing the concept.

The floors alternate between public and private space. There is a atrium running through the Design, so that the public users for example the Visitors can look through the atrium down to the other floors and observe the animators at work

By off setting the floors slightly, it will allow a slightly different view on each floor. The atrium will also act as a light shaft, bringing light to all levels

By using structural columns similar to the layout of the precedent study, it will free up the Internal space and not be inhibited by load bearing walls.

The structure is similar to the first study, However the floors are less structural and Cantilevered from the columns which will create a more open space

The top two floors will be cantilevered off the structural columns to create a open space. The top two floors are private studio and without any structural elements restricting their space, they can create their own studio space

By placing the private space on the top floors and towards the back of the site, it will be less ex-posed to the sunlight and will not be disturbed by the public

First Volumetric study

This study is focused on the struc-ture and how the interaction be-tween levels can occur. By creating an atrium through the design, the ground floor will have an 3 floor height space and become the Highlight of the design

This is an adaption of the first vol-umetric model and the floors has been rotated on the axis slightly on each floor. This will allow a different view on each level and the top level will extend out onto the river

The public floors would be located on the lower floors and the private will be on the top floors so that they will not be disturbed. The top floors will also be cantilevered off the structural columns

Public circulation

There are currently 2 entrances into the site: one from the riverfront and the back of the building. This may cause confusion for visitors

The loading entrance only has direct access to the service lifts and cannot access the restaurant, which will make it difficult to get equipments and food into the kitchen without disturbing the public

The private studio will block all of the views overlooking the River from the public. From the earlier analysis of the studios, they are normally open plan to allow users to create their own space

The gallery space detracts from the digital preview rooms. The digitial preview room are also facing onto the river and the space could be utilised where the public can see the amazing view

The staffs using the studio will be restricted in their studio as the centre of the floor is opened to the public and will be inconvenient for the staffs

Currently the private studios are enclosed in glass and visitors can look into the room and observe their activities, however this does not provide a unqiue experience of animation

The lifts take the animators directly to the third floor to preview their own work. The service lift does not interfere with the public or private circulation either

The private space is located next to the Municpal office block and does not take up or block any of the stunninf views around York

The plug in concept comes through in the models and the staircase becomes the atrium of the building

The circulation on the third floor is not very restricting. There is a gallery space where they can explore the previous works made in the centre and then go into the digital preview room to watch some of the previous work

The main entrance is located by the restaurant and could confuse visitors who want to explore the animation centre

Circulation around the viewing platforms and experiencing how to make the animation is not very clear

The view is blocked by the two digital preview rooms and could be relocated so that the top floor could showcase the view of York

When building the concept model, the struc-tural elements were not very secure

The second floor will have viewing platforms where they can observe the private studio without disturbing the animators at work

The elements that stick out makes the form more interesting

By making the studio private on the whole of first floor will mean that the workspace of the animation will not have to compromised for the public

The balcony on the top floor will allow visitors to enjoy the stunning view overlooking the river as well the animation centre

The private entrance will allow suppliers and staff to enter where there will be no conflict with the public and they can either use the service lift to reach the desired floor or go into the kitchen

The studio is open plan which allows the animators to freely used the space and reorganise it to their own liking

Third Floor

The second floor circulation flows better than the previous design. Visitors will first go to the viewing platform then they will go to the graphic studios to try making it themselves

In this desigm, many of the walls are removed to free up the space and the walls inserted are all partition walls and can be moved around the studio space to allow animator to create their own studio spaces

Scale 1:200

The viewing platform allows visitors to observe how animators work without disturbing them

The restaurant is now located on the top floor so that diners and staffs can relax with the amazing view of York

In this design, there are structural cores running up the whole design containng the services like the circulation and toilets.

This was taken from the precedent study on how the media centre has 4 main structural columns and the floors are supported by them

Concept model

The form of the digital preview rooms do not suit the rest of the form of the design because of the slanted walls.

The staircase does not fit with the angular form of the design. This staircase is also unsuitable for large numbers of people as the tread becomes smaller towards the inside of the staircase

Aspects that work well

The viewing platform currently requires visitors to walk back along their route rather than go round and explore new areas

There are opportunity views of York Minster from the staircase, therefore the staircase could also be made into a viewing platform as well as circulationThe plugs are not obvious enough from the exter-

nal view therefore to emphasise the concept, the plugs could extend further away from the core

The cores will act as load bearing elements which will allow more fluid spaces within the building and can be adapted to suit the occasion.

The basement will be located a floor below the circulation walkway. It will contain storage for the restaurant and studio as well as the plant room. The basement will have to be constructed from waterproof concrete to prevent water entering the building when flooding

The private circulation allows staffs and animators to circulate without having any interaction with the public circulation unless they want to.

The main entrance for the public is from Lendal bridge and the extended walkway.

Visitors may walk from the city centre to the animation centre, and they can walk down the walkway which will be cladded with copper panels to extend the theme of my design out

Most tourist and visitors will be coming from the train station and is likely to cross the Lendal Bridge

Visitors may also come from the extended walkway which starts at the Skeldergate Bridge further down the site

Suppliers can drive down the alleyway from Lendal Road and park in the loading area.

Lendal Road is more for pedestrian use and can only be used for vehicles that need to load/unload

Suppliers will most likely travel up the main road on Lendal Bridge
