PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Theme: “Your Time is Your Gift to Others”
It’s a brand new club year with endless possibilities to volunteer for projects that enhance our
community and beyond. In some cases, you may never meet the man, woman or child on the
receiving end but you can rest assured that they felt your presence. It may have come in the
form of a warm blanket on a cold wintery day, a gift during the holidays, a vaccination that will
save lives, or something as simple as a bra that will ignite a business opportunity ultimately
changing generations of lives.
We also offer the opportunity for hands-on projects closer to home. Some of these projects
are one-and-done and quite a few are ongoing. You do not have to wait to be asked to
participate. An email, phone call or raising your hand at a meeting will connect you to the
chairpersons who are also listed in your yearbook. You just need to decide how to spend your
time.
You may also want to spend quality time with fun-loving club members getting together
outside of the monthly meetings. If you aren’t familiar with our Club Sections, I hope you will
be by the time you finish reading this article. There are three ladies that definitely follow my
President’s theme of “Your Time is Your Gift to Others.” They spend their valuable time
coordinating and arranging get-togethers that all participants enjoy. Once again, there is an
open invitation for you to join.

I would like to thank Debbie Vincent for spearheading the Bunco brigade last year and Crystal Gates
who is continuing the legacy of laughter and fun. If you have played Bunco before, you know that it is
a relaxing evening of fellowship and friendship. Bunco meets in the clubroom on the second Tuesday
of the month at 7 p.m.
Sandy Weinrich meets monthly in the clubroom with ladies sharing thought-provoking information,
questions and answers about a group of books recently read. They always welcome new ideas from
members. The Book Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 9:30 a.m.
Our Socialites Chairperson, Dottie Jensen, is constantly thinking ahead about interesting places to meet
for lunch and dinner. She makes sure the venue has enough space to host at least 25 ladies and that
the menu is appealing. So far, she hasn’t missed a beat. Dottie will have sign-up sheets at the board
and general meetings. Dinner is on the fourth Thursday of each month and lunch is on the second
Wednesday.
The best way to make sure you don’t miss out is to read your newsletter and add the events
to your calendars. All three of these Club Sections offer an opportunity for you to chat with
others in very relaxed settings. However there is no limit on activities to explore. If you
have an idea, please don’t keep it to yourself. Instead, let’s talk about how to get it off the
ground. As I mentioned in my first sentence, this new club year offers endless possibilities.
I’m looking forward to participating with all with you.

NEWS FROM OUR VICE PRESIDENTS
YAY! YLWC WINS AT STATE CONVENTION!
It was a wonderful weekend recently at CFWC State Convention in Costa Mesa. We had lots of fun and excitement, especially when we heard “Yorba Linda Woman’s Club” called out numerous times as awards were presented! We’re in the Large Club category (based on # of members) and compete with many other large clubs throughout the state. It is quite an honor to win state level awards -- so let’s give these ladies a great big pat on the back and our hearty “congratulations” for winning:
• Large Club Newsletter Contest (Jan Lavison, YLWC Newsletter Editor) • “Creativity Award” in Domestic Violence Awareness & Prevention for our Slippers of Serenity project
(Shelly Garland, YLWC Program Chair) • 1st Place/Area D 2016 Membership Award (Susie Autry, 2016 YLWC Membership Chair)
Let’s also give a big shoutout to club member Karlene Ballard, who is Orange District’s Domestic Violence Awareness & Prevention Chairman. She won the Large District Award for her hard work as district chairman this year! Orange District, itself, and several other district clubs also received awards. Gotta say, it was loads of fun watching our very own Marcia Willett jump up, scream, and run to the podium each time! I wonder…has Orange District ever seen this much excitement at state convention?! YLWC also submitted four (4) art pieces (winners of our recent Student Art Contest) to compete in the CFWC Art Contest held during convention. I am proud to announce that all four of “our students” won awards! These talented students and their parents will be at our June club meeting to receive their certificates. Here are a few photos of all the fun….(also attending, but camera-shy, were: Louise Hernandez, Susan Hillman, Lucy Huerta and Kaycee Stack).

ART COMMUNITY SERVICE
STUDENT ART CONTEST
The club’s annual Student Art Contest culminated in the Award Ceremony on
May the 4th. We had 26 students that were awarded $4,625 in prize money
with 29 prizes. We had 2 students that won in 2 categories and “Best of Show”
also received 1st place in the Division 1 Drawing Category.
For those of you that are not familiar with the Student Art Contest rules, here
is a short summarization. We have two divisions, Division 1 (grades 11 & 12)
and Division 2 (grades 09-10). Inside both divisions, we have four categories:
painting, drawing, photography, and 3-D art. The competition is within
division and category.
“Best of Show” & “Drawing 1st Prize”
Brittany Hethcoat, El Dorado High.
(Continued on Page 6)
YORBA LINDA LIGHTS, June 2017 Page 6
(Continued from Page 5)
We awarded 28 prizes, and also had a “Best of Show”. We did not have entries this year in the 3-D Art
Category Division 2. We received 187 entries from our high schools within the Placentia/Yorba Linda
Unified School District. Art entries were judged by artists from the local art community.
The award ceremony was truly a work of art. Both students and art teachers were very satisfied with the
way the club has conducted the Student Art Contest. The teachers specifically mentioned how happy they
were with the club’s current set-up.
On the 1st of May, all the art work was received in the Yorba Room at the Community Center. On the 2nd,
we have the judges come in and determine the winners. Certificates were then generated for the 29
prizes.
In order for the club to do all of this, we need a lot of help from club members that volunteer their time
throughout these days. On the 2nd of May, we had volunteers that came in at 7:15 a.m. and left at 5:30 p.m.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank all of you that came through and helped with the Student Art Contest:
Karlene Ballard, Sandee Van Oyen, Sandy Weinrich, Linda Zielke (co-chairperson), Dotti Jensen, Jewel
Hollingsworth, Mel Bond, Pat Porter, Heather Laporte, Aileen Baker, Kathy Carswell, Pam Tice, Martha
Doose, and Nancy Capel. And husbands; Duke Walls (who took a vacation day to help out) and Glenn Zielke
that both did the ‘heavy lifting’ for us. Special thanks go out to Margie Donovan who did an outstanding
job of getting all the art students up on the stage in the correct order at the Award Ceremony.
I do hope I have not forgotten anyone. As
I said, without your help there would not
have been a Student Art Contest. It has
been a fantastic honor for me to serve the
club and the local art community these
past two years as a co-chairman of this
successful project.

CONSERVATION COMMUNITY SERVICE
ZURURA
Zurura, a male elephant born in 2005 is sponsored by Leslie Sorrells. He
was seven to eight weeks old when he was found by miners. He fell into
an open faced ruby mine between Tsavo East and Tsavo West during the
night. The area of the ruby mine forms a migratory corridor long used by
elephants to move between the two Tsavo’s, which is now populated by
an expanding human population making passage extremely dangerous
for elephants. They have taken to streaking through under the cover of
darkness.
Disturbed earth all around the pit was evidence that the herd had
struggled long and hard to retrieve the calf that had fallen in during this
process, but eventually the Matriarch had to make the terrible decision to abandon the trapped tiny baby in order to
ensure the safety of the rest of her family before daybreak. By morning, what seemed to be a ghost herd had vanished.
There was no sign of elephants anywhere.
The miners who rescued the baby elephant named him Zurura being the Swahili word for The Wanderer and took him
to the police station where the Kenya Wildlife Service contacted The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust who immediately
sent their mobile Veterinary Unit. The calf remained very calm and has done remarkably well.

GODOMA
Godoma, a female elephant sponsored by Pat Robert, was five to six months
old when found bruised and battered in a well by Conservancy Scouts from
the Taita Hills Sanctuary. The scouts came to her aid and retrieved her from
the water in the hopes that her mother and herd might return for her.
The calf was still milk dependent, only a couple of months old, and cut a
vulnerable figure as she trailed a herd of zebra and three buffalo on the open
plains. She was kept under observation for most of the day, but there were no
other elephants in the area and how long she had been trapped was unclear.
While there was still time to mount a rescue, the elephant keepers from David
Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Voi were contacted and the men wasted no time
getting to the site with much needed milk formula while it was still daylight.
She cried much of the night, missing her lost family, but with the reassuring company of the rest of the nursery orphans,
along with loving attention from her keepers, she eventually settled. She is called Godoma, the name of the valley close
to where she was rescued.

2017 ART, LEADERSHIP & SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
In 1961, the Yorba Linda Woman's Club gave their first scholarships by awarding two local students $50
each. This year, on May 4th the Club awarded approximately $20,000 in scholarships and art awards funded
by our club, our wonderful sponsors and proceeds from the Spring and Fall Craft Faires. These students are
ambitious role models who exemplify the values of the Yorba Linda Woman's Club Among the glitz and
glamour of the Yorba Room, 40 local high school students from local area schools received their award
certificates and checks. In attendance at the ceremony were the students' families, friends, art teachers and
school principals as well as several local dignitaries: Mayor Pro Tem Gene Hernandez, City Councilmember
Tara Campbell, and representatives from the offices of Congressman Ed Royce, Senator Josh Newman,
Assemblyman Phillip Chen and Supervisor Todd Spitzer.

TOPEZ ELEMENTARY SCHOOL READING PROGRAM
Our reading program at Topaz Elementary served the needs of children in the Special
Pre-Kindergarten, Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grades. Eight (8) of our
members committed to reading to various age groups at Topaz (194 students), over a
span of six months, beginning in January, 2017. It is expected that by our last reading
session on June 9, 2017, members will have volunteered their time and talents, 90 out
of 105 school days, or 86 % of the school days. Students benefited from our service by
learning how to use their imagination to journey into new adventures. “Studies show that reading aloud to
children, more than talking, builds literacy.” (EdSource, Highlighting Strategies for Student Success).
In addition to reading weekly, three of our members (Margie Donovan, Ans Varenhorst and Sandy Weinrich)
also read on March 2, 2017, for the Read Across America Program. Maria Lumby, Topez School Librarian, is
in the throes of testing the students on their proficiency skills in reading. The establishment of this program
on March 2, 1998, was to celebrate reading and commemorate Dr. Seuss’s Birthday. Also, joining us on this
special day was our President, Louise Hernandez and our Dean, Linda Queen.
Many of our readers are grandmothers and have provided that “grandmother’s touch” for students who
have never experienced a relationship with grandma. But, the hug, the concern, the smile, the thank
you, the respect, the interest and the trust are just a small sampling of the “gifts” we all have received
back from our students at Topaz. (Continued on Page 13)

The committee is open to any suggestions the members may have to add to our education projects. This has been an active year for our education volunteers. Mary Lien has done a fantastic job as our Topaz Elementary School Liaison for the reading program. Many of you have helped with this project. Our Box Tops for Education brought in over $40 to donate to Topez Elementary School. The Yorba Linda Library display turned out well thanks to all the wonderful projects we were able to display. We are looking forward to next year. Remember to save those Box Tops for Education, mainly from General Mills products. SEW KIND AND THREADS OF LOVE
Venita’s sewing group will continue to meet during the summer as usual on the 1st
Thursday of each month. The next workshop will be on June 1st in the clubroom
from 1:00-3:00 p.m. There were a couple new members who have joined us and we
welcome everyone to help with all our projects. There were quite a few aprons
donated to the request from Venita and she now has enough so no more donations
are needed. Thanks to all who donated or sewed aprons for this project.
Jackie’s Threads of Love group will meet on June 8th in the clubroom from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
The Threads of Love group will be taking a break from the workshops in July & August and will resume in
September. There is a need for volunteers to help stuff the heads that are used for the Lovie Dolls. Come by
the workshop on June 8th to see what is involved, or give Jackie a call and she will show you what you need
to know. It is very simple; anyone can do this job. Jackie requests that if anyone could crochet small baby
hats, using a rather fine thread, she needs these for the preemie babies. For information, see or call Jackie.

Thank you to the members that have registered! Your support is appreciated!
For anyone new to Relay for Life it is a team fundraising event where team members take turns walking
around a track. Our event is 19 hours in length and each team is asked to have a member on the track
at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps. Cancer patients don't stop because they're tired, and
for one night, neither do we.
Each team sets up a themed campsite at the event and continues their fundraising efforts by collect-ing donations for food, goods, games, and/or activities. This money will count towards their overall team fundraising goal.
