Do you want to know why you

should take an active role in the

Order of the Arrow? Sure helping

with service projects is great and

ice cream is good too. But the

main reason is FUN! Let me give

you a couple of reasons why you

should come back. Fellowships,

service, ice cream, and PATCHES! If

you’re not a patch trading junkie

you soon will be and if you already

are then we have some great news

for you. Our newest line of

patches, the NOAC 2015 set, was a

huge success at NOAC this past

summer. We plan on attending

some trade-o-res in the upcoming

months. Wait what is NOAC you

ask? The National Order of the

Arrow Conference, the largest

gathering of arrow men on the

planet. Last August 15,000 arrow

men gathered at Michigan State

University to go to training

sessions and complete fun

activities.

Why come back to an Ordeal?

Matthew Hornung

Every Arrowman in the Order of the Arrow takes part in at least one Ordeal weekend in their lifetime. In the Chippanyonk Lodge, Arrowmen’s Ordeal experiences range in location from Camp Resolute to Nobscot Scout Reservation and in activity from setting up tents to painting buildings. There is one thread through all of these experiences that ties them together; although the weekend is centered on new Ordeal candidates, there are many Arrowmen for whom the Ordeal in question is not their first.

As a Brotherhood member of Chippanyonk, I have attended four Ordeals since my own in May 2012. I confess that after leaving the gates of Camp Resolute on Sunday morning three years ago, I did not have any intention of voluntarily returning to an Ordeal. However within three months, the lodge recruited me onto its kitchen staff, locking me into returning year after year. And despite my initial reluctance, I am so glad that I have.

The myth that surrounds the Ordeal is that it is focused only on candidates’ service and induction requirements. That simply isn’t true. An Ordeal is by far one of the greatest offerings that the Order of the Arrow has to present to its members. Speaking from experience, I can confidently say that some of my favorite experiences in Scouting have come out of attending Ordeals. I’ve made many lifelong friends and had some of the best weekends I can recall with fellow Arrowmen who return to each Ordeal.

Many Arrowmen also return to help see others through the Ordeal process. “You get the unique opportunity see the Ordeal candidates going through the Ordeal process,” said Arrowman Austin Heisey.

Of course, the reasons for returning don’t stop at camaraderie or memories either. With culinary genius John Fortini running the kitchen, an Ordeal attendee’s meals as a returning Arrowmen can range from pig roasts and cake-for-breakfast to bacon bombs and fried tortillas. Returning Arrowmen can also sleep in greater comfort than Ordeal candidates, with tents and occasionally cabins available. The reasons to come back are numerous.

With that in mind, I hope to see

anyone who reads this at our next

Ordeal. Every weekend the lodge

spends together is unfailingly a

blast. Don’t miss out

New Arrowman might wonder what events are coming up. In the next couple of months, we have two main events planned. The first big event is the Fall Ordeal and will be Sept 16-18 at Camp Resolute. We are always looking for new Elangomats. If you would like to be an Elangomat, please contact Harlan. He is our new Elangomat Training Chairman and has worked up a new training curriculum (and handbook, hint, hint). Or you can just to Ordeal to help out. The new Thematic Committee will also be holding its inaugural meeting. If you want to find out more information, please contact Austin. The Thematic Committee is in charge of reviewing patch designs, designing appraisal, and creating banners. The Thematic Committee welcomes proposed patch designs and is always looking for new members.

The other big fall event is our Brotherhood Gathering. This will be combined with the Taste of Scouting on October 18-19 at Camp Resolute. Cub Scouts can earn Belt Loops, and the Lodge will provide a Campfire program. There will be opportunities for socializing, Lodge Leadership Development (LLD), games and patch trading. The Taste of Scouting will encourage Cub Scouts to get excited about Scouting. It will be a service opportunity for the Council. It will really show Chippanyonk Lodge helping out among the Council.

Everyone is welcome to our thrilling Lodge

Executive Committee (LEC) meetings. This is where we

plan all the events and make all the key

decisions. Anyone under 21 and has a vote

For example, they had human foosball, bubble ball, and much more. There are also lodge events that have NOAC wide tournaments like “lodgeball" (lodge dodgeball), or Ultimate Frisbee. Unfortunately the next one won’t be until 2018, so how about you go to a conclave? What is conclave? Conclave is like a NOAC except it’s for our section, so it’s on a much smaller scale. Who knows maybe you will learn how to pick up chicks in a Boy Scout uniform.

If patches aren’t your thing. Then try out a fellowship. They

are always lots of fun. The lodge is run by its youth members,

so if you have a fun idea for a fellowship let it be known. My

advice to you is…Get Involved! The only way to get

something out of the OA is to put more in. You get out what

you put in. The OA provides many opportunities to learn new

skills like at NOAC, but you will only learn those skills if you try

to learn them. Join a committee, go to a fellowship, eat some

Ice Cream, and buy some patches and I guarantee you will

have a great time.

Chief’s Corner

Hello candidates!

I wanted to take this time to remind you about what

being in the Order of the Arrow is about. We are a

Brotherhood of Cheerful Service and in that respect we

should be doing all we can for each other and the

Council and Lodge as a whole. Being in the O.A. isn’t

just something that should be on a resúme. Make sure

that you give it your all so you can honestly say that you

are a part of an organization that makes a difference.

Thank you for all that you do,

Keith Zontini

Advisor’s corner

I must admit this summer has literally

flown by, but I am sure many of you

will agree the highlight of this

summer was NOAC, the 100th

anniversary of our OA at Michigan

State University.

The memories we made during our 9

days together will last a long time

and I hope that trainings we all took

can help our lodge in many different

ways.

As a youth run organization we must

follow the goals set forth by our

Lodge Executive committee and see

that the lodge provides service and

fellowship to our lodge membership

and the scouts and scouters in the

Knox Trail Council.

I look forward to serving you all

again. Just around the corner is Taste

of Scouting. The lodge is providing

service to our cub scouts and their

families, I look forward to seeing a

large group of Chippanyonk

arrowmen at CADC for the weekend.
