DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: FRIDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER 2015

The Competition is open to all young instrumentalist under the age of 19 years on October 11th 2015.

The First Stage will be held at the Erin Arts Centre, Victoria Square, Port Erin at 2pm on Sunday 11th October 2015. The Final will take place in the Erin Arts Centre at 2pm on Sunday 15th November 2015.

THE WINNER WILL RECEIVE: The Malcolm Dickinson Memorial Prize of £200, a silver cup presented by the Rotary Club of Rushen & Western Mann (held for two years); a glass goblet presented by the Isle of Man Arts Council and the title “Young Musician of Mann 2015”. Second Prize will be a £100 Cash Prize and Third Prize will be a £50 Cash Prize. A special plaque in memory of Marian Shimmin will also be awarded to the most promising competitor.

FIRST STAGE: Competitors should play a free selection of music of not more than ten minutes’ recital time, including breaks between movements and pieces. Competitors should allow time in their calculations for applause. Provided the required standard is reached, up to six of the musicians will be invited to take part in the Final. A ballot will take place prior to the First Stage to determine the order in which competitors will perform, competitors being notified of the order on their arrival at the venue. This order will remain the same throughout the Competition.

FINAL: Competitors should play a free selection of music lasting not more than twenty minutes’ recital time, including breaks between movements and pieces. Competitors should allow time in their calculations for applause.

REGULATIONS: Competitors will not be required to play from memory at any time. Use of music will not incur penalties though it is fair to point out that, in competition, musicians who do play from memory tend to play to a higher standard. Competitors will be expected to provide their own accompanist (where required) for both the First Stage and the Final. It is a strict condition of entry to the competition that competitors provide a copy (not a photocopy, unless accompanied by a licence from the publisher) of their music for use by the adjudicators. This is to be in addition to any copy required by the competitor and/or accompanist. Copies for the jury and accompanists must NOT be shared with other competitors.

Excluding recorders, a competitor’s programme must be played on the one instrument. With the exception of the pianoforte entrants, each competitor’s programme must contain at least two items with pianoforte accompaniment. Music submitted for the competition may be an arrangement of a work originally written for a different solo instrument but the arrangement must be approved by the original composer, if applicable, and/or holder of copyright.

The organisers may use, in any way they think appropriate, recordings (either visual, auditory, or both) without payment of fee. If broadcast considerations make it necessary, competitors may be asked to play a single movement or selected movements from their programme.

The adjudicators will assess each performance using the following principles for judging:

(1) Musicality: Musical sensitivity and expressive power plus the ability to interpret the music with a sense of style appropriate to its period.

(2) Presentation: The way in which competitors present their performances - how they stand or sit, enter, depart, acknowledge applause and their general bearing.

(3) Technique: Mastery of the technical difficulties of the instrument.

(4) Programme Content: Competitors should include a variety of styles and periods in both their First Stage and Final recitals.

No more than six competitors will be chosen for the Final. The prize will not be shared. Competitors playing for more than one minute longer than the allotted time may be penalised. Entry is conditional on competitors accepting the conditions given. In any matters arising from these Regulations the decision of the Adjudicators is final. No correspondence will be entered into.
