2016 YMCA JOHN ISLAND CAMP Women’s Wellness Weekend Program

Friday June 3rd—Sunday June 5th, 2016

Inside you will find…

2 ladies, 2 microphones, 2 guitars...that's what you get with Chicks with Picks. Melanie Morin and Nancy Palladino picked up their guitars in 2001 and have since been playing various types of venues including bars, festivals, weddings and special events. While the type of music selected for their repertoire is varied, their love of classic rock and emphasis on harmonies is evident. Their sound can best be described by the following three words : creativity, soul and harmony. For more information, visit their website at www.chickswithpicks.info

Women’s Wellness Weekend 2016—it’s finally here! The Dining Hall at John Island Camp is ready to welcome you to our beautiful site for the 26th year of this amazing three-day getaway. Get ready for fun, adventure, relaxation, exploration, and of course, a great community of women.

Saturday Night Attire - Flower Power

Think of the 60s, Laugh-In, and Hippies and you've got Flower Power. This slogan was used during the late 1960s and early 1970s as a symbol of passive resistance and non-violence ideology. Hippies embraced this symbolism by dressing in clothing with embroidered flowers and vibrant colours and wearing flowers in their hair. Fast forward 50 years to a beautiful island in the North Channel. We in-vite you to find your inner flower child and dress for dinner accordingly.

Ecstatic Dance with Liz O’Hara—Maximum 20 Allow yourself to unlock your creative expression through this free form, loosely guided, meditative dance practice. We will explore being present in our movements and become aware of patterns and behaviors within our body. Let's invite our bodies to move to the beat! No dance experience or skills necessary. Just bring your willing and open minds, bodies, and hearts to this class and have fun.

Yoga Nidra and Sound Healing with Liz O’Hara—Maximum 25

This class will begin with a restorative yoga flow to relax the body and to prepare it for the healing effects of sound and yoga nidra. We live in a chronically exhausted and overstimulated world. Through yoga nidra we can completely relax the body holistically by coming into a deep meditative state of consciousness. This practice will be combined with Tibetan singing bowls creating a soothing soundscape to support the process of relaxation and release.

Traditional Ojibway Story Telling with Will Morin– Unlimited

This interactive workshop will have participants engage in various traditional Ojibway stories of wisdom and self discovery. With the playful use of animal hats and costumes this high energy session will inspire your imagination and tickle your inner child.

Traditional Indigenous Art with Will Morin– Unlimited

Using an applique method of traditional symbols and images of cultural objects you will create something of meaning and depth. Participants will be guided through various painting and drawing techniques in decorating a box— to store memories, stories, or as a gift for a loved one.

No art skills required! (Workshop cost for materials is $10)

William Morin is an award winning Anishinaabe / Ojibway artist, traditional storyteller and educator, teaching Indigenous Studies at the University of Sudbury for almost 2 decades.

Paddle and Paint—Maximum 10 Join Marlies Schoenefeld as you paddle to an island to paint a landscape with watercolour. All you need to bring is a sense of adventure and the willingness to try something new. (Cost for materials is $5).

For those in good physical condition who want a challenge and enjoy hiking exercise, the rugged, varied

terrain of the interior of the island will reward you as you search for a “lost lake” at its summit. There is

no guarantee that you will actually find the lake but you will enjoy the walk. Please wear hiking boots or

sturdy footwear and bring a water bottle and a bug shirt. This strenuous hike will take 4 hours.

Participants must stay with the group at all times.
