Yinnar South Citizen Association Winds up

As outlined in Newsletter articles over the past 18 months or so, Yinnar South Citizens Asso-ciation has been considering winding up, as it has fulfilled many of its key community advocacy tasks, and has completed or handed back some of its other functions, such as Yinnar South Public Hall management, and upgrades to Martin Walker Reserve. It was also difficult to find new members and new projects and causes to take forward.

At a Special General Meeting of the Yinnar South Citizens Association on 12 December, a resolution was passed to apply to Consumer Affairs Victoria to cancel the Registration of the Association. This is expected to be lodged in early 2019, following auditing and tidying up of the accounts, and distribution of remaining funds. On this note, it was resolved to distribute the remaining funds equally to Yinnar-Yinnar South Landcare Group and to the Yinnar South Primary School. The Association has also been able to assist the CFA with equipment purchases and the Tennis Club with building upgrades in the lead up to winding up.

One of the other critical roles of the Association was supporting and auspicing this Newsletter going out through the enormous efforts of mainly one person Joelle Cham-pert. The Association formally acknowledged Joelle's efforts at the 12 December meeting, and sadly this will be the final Newsletter. Thanks so much Joelle.

Thanks also to all those other community members who have contributed to the Associations projects and initiatives over its near 40 years of operations.

The Last Words This dear readers and contributors is the last newsletter of the Yinnar South Citizen Association.

This little publication started in 1980 and has been published interruptedly since. The origi-nal purpose of the newsletter was to organise the first Country Fair at Martin Walker Re-serve. A replica of the number 2 edition is en-closed as a souvenir. Number 1 is not to be found.

Quite a number of people served as editor of the newsletter: from Annette Deppeler who started on Issue No. 2 in 1980 to Heather Brimblecombe who did it for many years be-fore me..

I would like to thank all the contributors for their stories and the advertisers for their support. Without your input there would not have been a newsletter for so long.

On a brighter note, a small group of people are planning to revive the Yinnar and District Newsletter. This will give Yinnar South a continued voice in the local community. The newsletter will be available on line and possi-bly in a printed form at the general store. I will let our contributors know about further developments and post on Facebook. Yinnar, Yinnar South Landcare Group December/January is usually a quieter time of the year for our Landcare group but Ho Ho Ho, not this year!!!

Seed collection is the go for us at present. Many local species have their seeds over the summer…with a peak period at Christmas time! We are collecting seed because our group has been funded for a big revegetaion / forest restoration project in the Billy’s Creek valley, upstream from Morwell National Park. The site is large, steep and accessible only on foot, so we are going to be direct seeding much of it as well as planting tube stock. The contractors will be in spraying blackber-ries in the next few weeks (late December). Then, in April and possibly again in Septem-ber, we’ll be direct seeding into sprayed areas and hoping that the blackberries deter brows-ing animals from eating our seedlings when they emerge. There are reported to be a lot of large deer in there, and wallabies are also a problem for new plantings. Ideally we’d do all our re-vegetation projects with locally collected seed, so this project has given us a chance to learn how to go about collecting and propagating local species. At the end of October we went on a tour of the District in the Yinnar Community Bus to learn

about locally growing eucalypt species and about collecting seed from native plants. We looked at several sites with very different vegetation communities represented. Our group now has our seed collecting permissions in place, and we’re getting out

looking for plants and collecting seed from patches where there are enough plants of the same species to ensure genetic diversity. If anyone would like to help with our project please get in touch. We are a bit challenged by everything we need to do and all the things we need to learn, but we are also excited and energised by the new things we’re learning and the people who are already helping us with the project. Here’s a shout out to Henk, our bus driver, Jenny, the seed guru, Ruth and Celeste from Latrobe City Environmental Sustainabilty for for plant identification and seed collecting with us, Matt, Ken and others from Friends of Mor-well National Park for their exceptional local knowledge, Steve and Donna at Habitat Crea-tions for our visit to your Moe nursery, West Gippsland Seedbank for advice and informa-tion, Latrobe Valley Field Naturalists Club for species lists and to everyone else who is help-ing us to get this show on the road. We’ll keep our website on the Victorian Land-care Gateway up to date with opportunities to come out in the bush with us. And we’re cur-rently building a new website to keep all our species lists for various sites around the dis-trict, and to help us to manage our project(s). (A search for Yinnar Landcare usually finds us.)

In other news, our Annual General Meeting in October elected Chris Lange as President and Rose Mildenhall as Treasurer and re-elected Jay Duncan as Secretary. On behalf of the group, Chris thanked out-going President, Lucy Simnett, and Treasurer, Bev Read, for their great work. Yinnar, Yinnar South Landcare Group also be-came an independent Landcare Group under Victorian Landcare Incorporated rather than a sub-group of the Latrobe Catchment Landcare Network. We’re still working out how we’ll need to do our membership subscriptions. So we voted to extend all current memberships until June 30, 2019.

FIRE BRIGADE NEWS:

34 2132 . . . 34 2132 . . . 342132 . . . This is the number to ring if you want prompt attention

for a fire. For the last 9 months 4 Yinnar South telephone numbers

have been connected to a Fire Answering Service. If you have a fire to report, please phone the Morwell

Fire Station on 34 2132. They then dial a special number

and the 4 Y.Sth phones ring simultaneously, so that means

prompt action can be organised by the fire people with one

phone call. Even if these phones are privately engaged, a special tone

indicates there is a fire call coming through, so they are

able to dismiss their other caller. The fire call has a

special ring which immediately identifies it from an ordi-

nary phone call. If you are unable to get through to the Morwell Fire Sta-

tion, then ring 696552, 691553, 691550 or 691503, and say

it is for a fire because even the children know what to do

if there is a fire. SEPTEMBER 24th – 8pm, at the Morwell Fire Station, there

will be a film night on the Jaws of Life and the fireman’s

role in emergency service work.

TENNIS NEWS:

The Yinnar South Tennis Club will be holding their Annual Meeting on Wednesday 3rd

September in the club Rooms at 8.pm. Anyone interested in playing tennis, senior or

junior, is most welcome to attend. If you are interested in playing competition tennis but are unable to attend the

meeting, please phone Eric on 691553 or Bill on 691550.

SCHOOL NEWS:

Swimming will continue next tem, the younger children should

benefit from the continuation. We have two new children at the School now, Jason and Andrew

Currie, making the enrolment now 38.

SATURDAY, 13th SEPTEMBER – from 7.30 pm, there will be a fam-

ily folk dance in the Hall. The folk band ‘Boola Boola’ will

be playing. Admission will be $5 per FAMILY and we are hoping

to see a good crowd there. Ladies, a plate of supper please. If the night is a success, it will be a regular night. Clean-

ing apparatus for the Hall has been bought, so cleaning

should be easier now. We have purchased another urn for the Hall, this was bought

out of catering proceeds, so remember if you are having a

function, especially in the Hall, we would like to have the

chance to help you so that we may buy more equipment for the

Hall. At the moment we need more crockery and cutlery there.

7

COUNTRY FAIR NEWS:

14th March, 1981. So far one band has been booked, the

popular ‘Paradiddle’ group.

Auction: If you have any unused items, stoves,

furniture, implements, odds and sods, you may care to

have it auctioned at the Fair. There are various ways

this can be done – 1: A straight out donation: 2: On

commission of 10% with a $1 donation the minimum or 3:

EG. You may want $10 for your article and it sells for

$15, the Fair takes the $5. David Walker will be canvassing the area in the next

few weeks to see if there be enough articles to make

the auction worthwhile. See if you anything now. Now is the time to get a start on those cuttings so

that they will be well established by March. When you

plant your veggies, put a couple of extras in for the

Fair. We have a suggestion for a country Fair Joke Book. Any

Jokes? Bring them along to the next Fair meeting on WEDNESDAY, 10th September in the

Hall at 8pm, or drop them at the school.

CITIZENS NEWS:

At our next meeting on TUESDAY, 9th SEPTEMBER, we will be having a guest speaker

talking on the SEC Task Force 50 year plan. If you missed the meeting in Yinnar,

this will be your chance to find out how the proposed flood retention dam to built

at Yinnar South will affect us. The meeting will start at 8 pm, ladies are asked to

bring a plate of supper.

SHIRE NEWS:

A request from the Yinnar South Citizens for an upgrade of the

toilets at the Martin Walker Reserve has been referred to the

Council Estimates which are being prepared in the next couple of

months. The widening of the Jumbuk and middle Creek Roads intersection

is to referred to the CRB road maintenance program. A meeting of the South Riding people is being arranged at

BOOLARRA, probable on the evening of Monday, 15th September. The

meeting will be advertised in the Express, so watch for the

proper date. Two major project will be opened to the public in October. 1. The Churchill Leisure Centre with heated pool, squash courts

etc, should be of benefit to the people in this riding. 2. The Civic Centre will be of benefit to the Shire as well as

the Latrobe Valley. New offices in the building complex will

provide more appropriate working conditions for the staff.

HALL NEWS:

With the school children using the Hall during the day and the various activities in

the evenings, the Hall is getting used regularly. HOWEVER, there are a few jobs that have to be finished now that the weather looks

like improving so there will be a working bee on SUNDAY, 14th SEPTEMBER, at 10.30.

Please bring your own lunch and equipment to build two porches over the side doors

or brushes etc. to paint the remaining walls. We would like to see a good turn up of

men to get these jobs finished. ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

Items for the next Yinnar South Newsletter to be handed in by 24th OCTOBER, to

Annette Deppeler or phoned through to 691553.
