IN TDN AMERICA TODAYKEENELAND NOVEMBER SALE CONCLUDES The Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale ended its 13-day

2015 renewal. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN America.
YEARLING TRADE KICKSOFF TATTS DECEMBER
The single-session Tattersalls December Yearling Sale takes
place today, kicking off nine days of sales set to take place at
Park Paddocks in Newmarket over the next two weeks. The
December Foal Sale follows the yearling sale Nov. 23 to 26, and
the December Breeding Stock Sale wraps up proceedings
Nov. 28 to Dec. 1. The 200 lots catalogued for the yearling sale
include the progeny of perennial leading sire Galileo (Ire) and his
leading first-season sire son Frankel (GB). The two Frankels are a
half-brother to Australian Group 1 winner Hartnell (GB)
(Authorized {Ire}) (lot 166) and a colt out of a half-sister to G1
Irish Derby winner Cape Blanco (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 177).
Galileo also has two catalogued: a colt who is the first foal out
of Better Not Cry (Street Cry {Ire}), a half-sister to GI Belmont S.
winners Rags To Riches (A.P. Indy) and Jazil (Seeking the Gold)
out of champion broodmare Better Than Honour (Deputy
Minister) (lot 165) and a colt out of GI Beverly D. S. winner
Mauralakana (Fr) (Mutathir {GB}) (lot 176).
Also catalogued are siblings to Grade/Group 1 winners Gitano
Hernando (GB) (Hernando {Fr}), Joshua Tree (Ire) (Montjeu
{Ire}), Arctic Cosmos (North Light {Ire}), Dariana (Aus) (Redoute=s
Choice {Aus}) and sisters Charity Line (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}),
Cherry Collect (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}) and Final Score (Ire) (Dylan
Thomas {Ire}).
LESSONS LEARNED THIS WEEKENDby John Berry As Europe's autumn sales' season continues its relentlessmarch, amid the plethora of high prices and fascinating tales it iseasy to overlook just how great an era is ending with thedispersal of the Wildensteins' bloodstock. The Goffs NovemberSale in Ireland last week was a huge event with 1,753 lots in thecatalogue, but it would still have been a huge event even if ithad only contained lot 1431: the Wildensteins' 2012 G1 Pouled'Essai des Poulains heroine Beauty Parlour (GB) (Deep Impact{Jpn}). This 7-year-old celebrity comes from the immediatefamily of the great Might And Power (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) and wassold, believed to be in foal to Kingman (GB) (Invincible Spirit{Ire}), for i1.6-million. The Wildensteins' impact on the racing and breeding world hasbeen massive, so it almost went without saying that we wouldn'thave to wait long until a feature race somewhere in the worldwould be won by one of their proteges.

BITTERSWEET YEAR FOR CLASSIC BREEDERby Daithi Harvey
Not many 31-year-olds have the distinction of breeding a
Classic winner, but Peter Kelly of Ballybin Stud has achieved that
professional milestone quite early in his career. When Jet
Setting (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}) got the better of Cartier Horse
Of The Year Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in this year's
G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas, however, it was a rather
bittersweet moment for Kelly, as he had sold Mean Lae (Ire)
(Johannesburg), the dam of Jet Setting, to a colleague of his two
years previously. Kelly isn't one to dwell on these things, though,
having had his fair share of luck in the ring over the years, and
he is very much
looking forward to
offering a smart,
18-strong draft of
foals at the
Tattersalls December
Foal Sale in
Newmarket this
week, a sale that has
been especially kind
to the young breeder
in the past.
Ballybin Stud, a five minute drive from Fairyhouse Racecourse
in County Meath, is very much a family run operation with
Kelly's father Paddy--a renowned equine veterinary surgeon--at
the helm. Kelly junior harboured early ambitions to follow his
father into practice, but the long hours of study required to even
gain a place in Vet College altered his sights, and upon finishing
school the university of life beckoned, with his education
tailored towards the ultimate aim of breeding horses on a
professional and commercial basis. The Irish National Stud
course followed before he crossed the pond to Coolmore
America at Ashford Stud, where he spent three seasons.
"I worked with the stallions, with yearlings and in the foaling
unit. I learned a massive amount there; I think everyone does
when they go to Coolmore," he said.
Kelly also added a spell with Haras des Capucines in France to
his CV before returning home with his future wife Vanessa,
whom he met in America, to begin work at Derrinstown Stud,
where he still works part time.
Describing his current routine, Kelly said, "I do the breeding
season in Derrinstown and help out at home also when our own
mares are foaling. Then from summer onwards I'm at home full
time. The Galway Races [late July] is usually the marker we use
to begin the yearling prep. We don't have many yearlings of our
own, they would mostly be for clients. Between myself and my
father we have around a dozen mares of our own and we aim to
breed to sell at the Newmarket Foal sales. That would be our
principal focus. We've been selling at Tattersalls for about 16
years now and we've had some great days there."
Back in 2004 Peter Kelly made an inspired purchase at
Tattersalls when
paying 7,000gns for a
then 4-year-old mare
called Mythie (Fr)
(Octagonal {NZ})
from Haras de
Quesnay.
Unfortunately the
first foal from Mythie
died, but since that
initial piece of bad
luck the mare has
proved quite an asset for Ballybin. Her next foal, a colt by
Verglas (Ire), made i64,000 and the following year in 2007 Kelly
hit the jackpot with a filly foal from the last crop of Indian Ridge
(GB).
"I was a student at the Irish National Stud at the time and John
Clarke kindly arranged for me to do a foal share with Indian
Ridge," he explained. "We ended up getting 170,000gns for the
resulting foal at Tattersalls so between the Verglas and her we
were well ahead." Cont. p3

Bittersweet Year for Classic Breeder Cont. A few years later Mythie proved she could produce racehorsesas well as sales horses when her daughter Esentepe (Ire)(Oratorio {Ire}) won the G3 Nell Gwyn S. at Newmarket in 2012for trainer Richard Hannon before selling for 525,000gns toJustin Casse when offered by John Troy in foal to Frankel (GB) atTattersalls in 2014. This racecourse success provided some freshimpetus to the pedigree and resulted in some more profitablefoal sales for Kelly. Two years ago he brought a Harbour Watch(Ire) filly to Newmarket and was rewarded with a bid of240,000gns from Shadwell, while his 2015 offering, a colt byIffraaj (GB), also provided a stellar return when selling to JohnFerguson for 140,000gns. Kelly is equally hopeful of hisInvincible Spirit (Ire) filly out of Mythie, lot 1023, which he offerson Friday. "She's a really nice filly so hopefully shewill do well. Whatever happens this weekMythie has been a mare of a lifetime forme already so anything further will be anabsolute bonus," he said. The Ballybin draft isn't just about onehorse, as Kelly added, "I have a Pivotal filly(lot 1024) out of a new mare that I boughtlast year off Cheveley Park Stud. She has a2-year-old with Roger Varian that wasplaced on its only run so it looks promisingand she also has a Pivotal yearling colt thatis apparently nice, so there is a good bit going on in the family." Incidentally, the Pivotal yearling will be offered by Baroda &Colbinstown as lot 122 in the December Yearling Sale onMonday. Kelly continued, "We have a really nice Cape Cross (Ire) coltselling on Friday evening (lot 1029). He belongs to a friend of thefamily, he's a star colt. We always consign a few for the Kentfamily's Knockenduff Stud as well and their foals are all bypopular stallions--Kodiac, Dark Angel and Iffraaj--so you'dimagine they will be well received. My father then has aTamayuz colt, lot 1028, who is a three-parts brother to G Force(Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}). It's a good speedy, happening family sobetween these we'd be very hopeful." "The previous day myself and dad have a War Command colt, lot 731, he's quite nice. I like the War Commands, they look likerunners and this lad is the first foal out of a new mare webought that won twice. She was rated in the high 80s and is areal good-looker and so far is throwing them nice, the pedigreejust needs to fill out a bit but hopefully the mare will providethat in due course. " The above statement offers clues as to the Kelly modusoperandi when it comes to adding mares to the Ballybinbroodmare band. "I usually forsake some pedigree for lookswhen I'm buying mares," he explained. "I also try to buy onesthat have shown a decent level of racing ability, at least a rating
of 80. Mean Lae would be an example. She was a real good-looking mare, I bought her at Goffs out of Jim Bolger's draft fori3,000 and she was a smart enough racemare, rated in the high80s at one stage. However, you could definitely say she was theone that got away. I sold her to a pal of mine, Brian Duffy, but Idon't begrudge him the success in the slightest as he puts a lotof effort into it and I've had my share of luck with other maresso that's the way it goes. Somewhere in the history books I'mdown as breeding a Classic winner so I guess it's not all bad." Kelly's pragmatic approach to life should serve him well in theroller-coaster industry of breeding Thoroughbreds, and he saidhe feels fortunate to have a great team around him betweenfamily members and a long-standing team of staff at Ballybin. "I count myself very lucky to have had Dad there growing up, Icouldn't have asked for a better mentor,@ Kelly said. AA lot of
people around the sales would pay for hisadvice while I got it for free. He's a greatjudge and has taught me the fundamentalson conformation. It's so important in thisgame to get the basics right to giveyourself the best chance possible of beingsuccessful." He continued, "Vanessa keeps me calm,I'm probably known as a bit of worrier, which is hardly a surprise in this game, sowhen I'm about to derail she gets me backon track. It's a big family effort, my sister
Louise is a great help, she loves the sales, my cousin EdMcKenna is a brilliant asset and my mum keeps the show on theroad when we're all at the sales. Everyone pitches in when itcomes to walking the foals and things like that. I'm alsoconscious of maintaining a fun atmosphere. Its hard work so youneed to enjoy it and when you have a happy team it makes adifference." Kelly's nerves will be tested on Friday evening when nineBallybin lots in a row come under the hammer, but given thequality of the draft there should be very little cause for concern.
AI don't begrudge him thesuccess in the slightest as heputs a lot of effort into it andI've had my share of luck with
other mares so that's the way itgoes. Somewhere in the historybooks I'm down as breeding a
Classic winner.@

As it happened, we only had to wait about 10 hours after
Beauty Parlour's sale for the Ballarat Cup to be taken by the
Wildenstein-bred Pilote D'Essai (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).
A dual winner in Paris in 2015 for the Wildenstein family (in
the colours of Ballymore Thoroughbred Ltd), Pilote D'Essai was
knocked down to Astute Bloodstock at Tattersalls' 2015 Autumn
Horses-in-Training Sale for 230,000gns for export Down Under.
With the A$180,000 first prize for the Ballarat Cup on top of his
previous Australian
earnings from a
handicap victory at
Bendigo and three
minor placings in
town, he is already
looking to have been
a good buy. And he is
now, of course, the
latest stakes winner
from one of the best
Wildenstein families.
The best horses in Pilote D'Essai's family collectively provide a
'Who's Who' of the Wildensteins' trainers, present and past. He
himself was with Andre Fabre when he was in France. His G1
Prix Ganay-winning half-brother Planteur (Ire) (Danehill Dancer
{Ire}) and his dam's dual G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly-winning
half-brother Policy Maker (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) were both
trained by Ellie Lellouche. His third dam, Petroleuse (Ire)
(Habitat), was with Henry Cecil when she landed the
then-prestigious Blue Seal S. at Ascot in 1980; while Petroleuse's
half-sister Pawneese (Fr) (Carvin {Fr}) was trained by Angel
Penna to win six consecutive races in 1976 including the G1
Oaks, G1 Prix de Diane and G1 King George VI And Queen
Elizabeth Diamond S. at Ascot. Petroleuse's dam, Plencia (Fr) (Le
Haar {Fr}), was trained by Maurice Zilber when scoring twice
under Yves Saint-Martin at Saint-Cloud in 1971.
No Doubting Single=s Offspring... Saturday was a day of transition as the final day of the
Melbourne Spring Carnival (albeit at Ballarat, rather than in the
city or suburbs) coincided with the first Group 1 race-day of the
Perth Summer Carnival. As the focus shifted westwards, the first
major honours of West Australia's principal racing carnival were
again taken by a son of the Arrowfield-based stallion Not A
Single Doubt (Aus) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}). Last year the G1
Railway S. over 1600 metres fell to the Not A Single Doubt
4-year-old Good Project (Aus), and now the 2016 edition has
been taken by the stallion's 4-year-old son Scales Of Justice.
Good Project, bidding to repeat his victory, finished an
honourable second to provide their sire with a notable Group 1
quinella.
The Chris Waller-trained Good Project had headed to Perth
after showing good form at the Spring Carnival in Melbourne,
but Scales Of Justice, although bred in the east, is locally-trained
by Lindsey Smith. Scales Of Justice headed west after being
bought by Boomer Bloodstock for A$180,000 at the Melbourne
Premier Yearling Sale in March 2014, at which he was consigned
by Millford Thoroughbreds of Nagambie. He has subsequently
worked his way up the rankings in WA since making a winning
debut in an 1100 metre 2-year-olds' maiden at Northam 16
months ago. He has now won seven of his 13 starts including his
three most recent outings. The middle leg of this hat-trick saw
him land his first black-type victory, his success in the G3 R. J.
Peters S. earlier this month coming with the added bonus of
securing him a berth in the Railway S. line-up. Cont. p5

Scales Of Justice has thus become the fifth individual
Australian Group 1 winner for his sire Not A Single Doubt, who
stands alongside his sire Redoute's Choice (Aus) (Danehill) at
Arrowfield. Not A Single Doubt has had to gain his success the
hard way because he did not start out at the height of fashion,
never having won above Group 3 level. Even at the outset,
though, he was an appealing prospect for the discerning
breeder: he had been a high-class sprinter at both two and
three, and he hails from the immediate family of one of
Australia's most distinguished horses of the modern era, the
excellent sprinter and stallion Snippets (Aus) (Lunchtime {GB}).
Having already produced umpteen fast sons and daughters
including the dual Group 1 winners Miracles Of Life (Aus) and
Extreme Choice (Aus), Not A Single Doubt is clearly one of the
best stallions in Australia, a status which tallies with the fact that
he is now the third-most expensive sire on the Arrowfield roster
at an advertised fee of A$71,500, behind only his paternal
half-brother Snitzel (Aus) and their father (both A$110,000).
Tycoon Mentioned In Dispatches... While Not A Single Doubt has clearly been one of Australia's
most progressive stallions of recent years, another who comes
into that category is the 2005 G2 Todman S. winner Written
Tycoon (Aus) (Iglesia {Aus}), who retired to Eliza Park Stud in
Victoria in 2007 at a fee of $8,250 and who is now commanding
a fee of $49,500 at Woodside Park Stud in the same state.
Woodside Park bought Written Tycoon for A$3-million in 2013,
which was good business for the stallion's initial shareholders,
who had bought their shares for A$15,000. It now transpires
that it was similarly good business for Woodside Park. Written
Tycoon had spent his final
season on the Eliza Park
roster at that stud's
offshoot in Queensland,
which made sense as his
dam Party Miss (Aus)
(Kenmare {Aus}) had been
a popular sprinting filly in
Queensland in her youth,
and the horse's proven
ability to sire fast horses was of obvious appeal to breeders in
the north, where the racing programme is dominated by
short-distance races. That season in Queensland saw the
conception of >TDN Rising Star= Capitalist (Aus), who turned out
to be Australia's leading juvenile of the 2015/'16 season,
completing the coveted Magic Millions 2YO Classic/G1 Golden
Slipper S. double. The same crop also included Luna Rossa (NZ),
winner in her homeland of the G1 Manawatu Sires' Produce S.
It now looks as if Written Tycoon's current batch of juveniles is
going to help the stallion to make further progress. It is still early
days for this season's 2-year-olds, but it was encouraging to see
his son Despatch (Aus) make a splendid winning debut when
leading home a Tony McEvoy-trained quinella in the A$200,000
Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic at Ballarat. Despatch, who
cost A$195,000 when consigned by Baramul Stud at the Magic
Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, will now head for the A$2-
million Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast in January.
Scenic Souvenirs... Thanks to his superstar son Galileo (Ire), as well as the El Prado
(Ire) horses Medaglia d'Oro and Kitten's Joy, the sire line
descending from Sadler's Wells remains the height of fashion.
'Twas not always thus, however: although he retired to stud in
1985, Sadler's Wells did not fully convince as a sire of sires until
the 20th century was behind us. He was, however, an
outstanding sire of racehorses from the outset, not least
because he sired two G1 Dewhurst S. winners in his first crop,
courtesy of his 2-year-old sons Scenic (GB) and Prince Of Dance
(Ire) dead-heating in Britain's premier juvenile race in 1988.
Sadly Prince Of Dance died the next year, but Scenic lived to the
age of 19 before dying in 2005.
For much of his stud career, the fact that Scenic was a son of
Sadler's Wells was not a particular selling point for him, but his
consistently good results
during a peripatetic stud
career were one of the
factors which helped his
father to establish his
sky-high reputation as a sire
of sires. Scenic started out
shuttling between Coolmore
in Ireland and Lindsay Park
Stud in South Australia before
enjoying different Australian
postings, including at Durham
Lodge Stud in West Australia
and Collingrove Stud in
Victoria. His Lindsay
Park-conceived offspring
included G1 VRC Derby
winner Blevic (Aus) and G1
AJC Derby winner Universal Prince, while the star product of his
final seasons at Collingrove was G1 Melbourne Cup, G1 Caulfield
Cup and G2 Brisbane Cup hero Viewed (Aus). His term in WA,
however, was at least as productive as he sired some of the
state's best horses including Scenic Blast (Aus), Scenic Shot (Aus)
and Marasco (Aus). Cont. p6

Scenic's former Western Australian home at Durham Lodge
Stud now stands as a tribute to his legacy as the property was
re-named Scenic Lodge in his honour in 2012. Scenic was
Durham Lodge's foundation sire, and he brought it into sharp
focus by becoming Western Australia's champion sire for seven
consecutive seasons. His Group 3-winning son Universal Prince
subsequently joined the roster, but the stud's best stallion since
Scenic has been 1999 G1 VRC Derby winner Blackfriars (Aus)
(Danehill) who, like Scenic, has been a multiple champion sire in
WA. Blackfriars looks set to enjoy another good Perth Carnival,
with his 4-year-old son Chocolate Holic (Aus) having doubled his
tally of stakes victories by taking the Carbine Club of W.A. S. at
Ascot on Saturday.
STEWARDS HIT MCDONALD ROADBLOCK Racing NSW stewards have reached a roadblock in their
investigation of an alleged bet placed by champion jockey James
McDonald, with a key figure in the investigation refusing to be
interviewed, according to Racing.com. The 24-year-old retained
rider to Godolphin voluntarily stood himself down from riding
last week after stewards revealed he was being investigated for
allegedly placing a
bet last December on
subsequent Group 1
winner Astern (Aus)
(Medaglia d=Oro),
who won the race in
question on debut.
Jockeys in Australia
are not allowed to
bet on races in which
they are riding.
Refusing to be interviewed is punter Anthony Gardiner, who
has as a result been warned off effective immediately, meaning
he is not permitted to enter any racecourse or training facility,
have an interest in a Thoroughbred racehorse or bet on
Thoroughbred races with a wagering operator. The decision to
warn off Gardiner was made by Racing NSW Chief Executive
Peter V=landys, who said, ARacing NSW is on record time and
again as saying integrity in this industry is paramount.
Accordingly, no individual=s interest should outweigh the
confidence of the public, and particularly punters, in the
integrity of the industry. Racing NSW has zero tolerance for
those that obstruct and hinder the maintenance of the integrity
of Thoroughbred racing in New South Wales.@
ANOTHER MILE FOR MIKKI ISLE Mikki Isle (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) had stamped himself
among the best of his generation at three with a win in the 2014
G1 NHK Mile Cup, but a 2 1/2-year Group 1 drought ensued for
the bay. That drought at last ended in Sunday=s G1 Mile
Championship at Kyoto, where he went gate to wire and held on
to win by a brave head. Breaking sharpest from gate 16, Mikki
Isle nursed a lead of about 3/4 of a length from Neorealism
(Jpn) (Neo Universe {Jpn}) down the backstretch. Neorealism
appeared a threat in early stretch, drawing within a neck of the
lead, but Mikki Isle soon disposed of that stubborn foe and had
enough left to hold off a fast-finishing Classic winner Isla Bonita
(Jpn) (Fuji Kiseki {Jpn}), who nipped Neorealism for second.
Mikki Isle had to see out a stewards= inquiry for drifting left in
the stretch run, but was allowed to keep the win. AI apologize

Suguru Hamanaka. AMikki Isle ran really well and I was able to
race him in front as planned. The horse was in good form and

put in a lacklustre effort when 13th in that year=s Mile

Mikki Isle went winless in 2015--mostly campaigned over

3/4 of a length second a month later in this year=s renewal of

On paper--and on the Hong Kong tote--Sunday=s Jockey Club
Cup was anticipated to be a three-way go between the senior
citizens of the local horse population: favored Designs On Rome
(Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), Blazing Speed (GB) (Dylan
Thomas {Ire}) and Military Attack. In the end, just the latter
showed up in his first race back, and it was the well-backed
contrarian Secret Weapon who landed the spoils.
Winner of a domestic Group 3 last February, Secret Weapon
was 11th to Maurice (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) in the G1
Champions Mile in May and filled third spot in two subsequent
tries at Group 3 level to close the season. His losing streak had
stretched to seven with two fruitless tries this term, but he was
a sneaky-good fourth after striking trouble in the G3 Sa Sa
Ladies= Purse H. Nov. 6, doing his best work once clear, and a
good many were ready to adopt a glass-half-full approach
Sunday.
The mount of Nash Rawiller, Secret Weapon was content to
drop back and settled third from the rear as Helene Happy Star
(Ire) (Zamindar) set the pace from Anticipation (Ire) (Fastnet
Rock {Aus}). Blazing Speed slipstreamed the latter from fourth,
Military Attack found a good spot on the rail from midfield and
Designs On Rome could
see them all, as is his
custom. The race
favorite got his cue
800m from home and
began to advance
around the field, but the
genuine tempo made
life tough on him, and
meanwhile, Secret
Weapon had found
himself shuffled back to last midway on the second turn. Helene
Happy Star led them off the final corner, but was soon besieged,
as Blazing Speed and Eastern Express (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus})
came with their bids. Cont. p8

But, patiently handled by Rawiller, Secret Weapon sluiced
through a gap between Eastern Express and Military Attack
200m out and kicked home best of all to score from Flame Hero,
who outfinished Military Attack for second. Blazing Speed was
fifth and Designs On Rome last of the nine.
AEveryone=s seen this horse at his best, and when he can get
that uninterrupted run and have an opportunity to let go like
that, he=s a very high-class horse, and that=s what he proved
today,@ said the winning rider, who is set to miss the G1
Longines Hong Kong Cup via suspension. AHe was very strong
over the 2000 metres today and you=d still expect there to be
some improvement for International day,@ he added.
Military Attack pulled up lame in his left fore and was to be
assessed over the coming days, while there were no significant
findings for Designs On Rome.

Special (Ire) (Peintre Celebre), Secret Weapon hails from the

The Kwok Family maintained its stranglehold on the Jockey
Club Mile, as Beauty Only grinded away late to peg back 96-1
Romantic Touch in the dying strides to follow in the hoofprints
of Beauty Flame (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), upset winner of
the 2015 renewal.
Winner of the 2015 Hong Kong Classic Mile, Beauty Only--a
Group 3 winner in Italy--failed to see out the longer trips and
since an eighth in last
year=s Hong Kong Cup
(2000m), has been kept at
1400-1600m. The
consistent gelding was
victorious in a domestic
Group 2 over track and
trip and had carried big
weights in two starts in
this term--a runner-up
effort to Joyful Trinity (Ire)
(Zanzibari) under 132
pounds in the G3 Celebration Cup H. (1400m) Oct. 1 and a third
to Designs On Rome (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) with 133
pounds in the G2 Sha Tin Trophy H. (1600m) Oct. 23.
Just touched out of favoritism in the final few minutes of
wagering by reigning Classic Mile hero Sun Jewellery, Beauty
Only was allowed to find his feet slowly and raced near the back
of the pack early on as Beauty Flame showed his trademark
early speed in advance of Contentment (Aus) (Hussonet) and
last year=s G1 Hong Kong Mile runner-up Giant Treasure (Mizzen
Mast). As the pace was slow to develop, several horses, most
notably Sun Jewellery, was reticent to relax, and it was Beauty
Flame enjoying another very soft run into the turn. The
pacesetter took them into the final quarter mile after 1200m in
a modest 1:10.86, but the chief protagonists were working their
way into it, even as the friendless Romantic Touch was having
the first crack at Beauty Flame. Sun Jewellery was the first to try
Romantic Touch, though never able to get by that one, and
Beauty Only raced over the top to score narrowly. The hard-luck
story of the race was Helene Paragon (Fr) (Polan {Fr}), who was
stymied for a run off the heels of Contentment at a critical stage
and finished a what-might-have-been seventh. Cont. p9

Not so long ago, Not Listenin=tome was the horse everyone
wanted to be on in races over 1000 metres and he was one of
the best-fancied horses for the G1 Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan this
past March. With Ryan Moore at the controls that evening, he
never really picked up his feet, and there had been nothing to
cheer since in four listless runs, including an eighth-place effort
behind emerging sprinter Lucky Bubbles (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}) in
the G2 Premier Bowl H. Oct. 23. All of which led to a quote of
42-1 for Sunday=s Jockey Club Sprint, but the animals can=t read,
and the former Aussie galloper, third to Peniaphobia (Ire)
(Dandy Man {Ire}) caused the boilover.
With Hugh Bowman in for the ride, Not Listenin=tome left
there running and wasn=t too far away early as Peniaphobia
shaded 2014 Hong Kong Sprint hero Aerovelocity for the lead,
but when Dashing Fellow (Aus) (Duporth {Aus}) was hustled
along outside, it left Not Listenin=tome in a perfect spot. Stalking
a headstrong
Peniaphobia and
Dashing Fellow
from third on the
turn, the John
Moore trainee was
steered out into
about the four path
and threw down his
challenge, but it
was anything but a
done deal, as
Amazing Kids (NZ)
(Falkirk {NZ}) and Lucky Bubbles were charging down the center
and Able Friend loomed large spying a gap three off the fence.
Inactivity finally caught up to the big chestnut inside the final
150 meters and although Lucky Bubbles got home well, Not
Listenin=tome found enough to hit the wire first. Aerovelocity sat
an ideal trip and finished an alibi-free third.
AHugh rode him a great race, rode him to instructions,@ said
Moore, winning this for the fifth time. AHe got across, got a little
bit of cover there and he kicked. We=re going into the race on
the 11th with hopes of getting a good draw and a similar sort of
run. Today, he was 100% and he managed to beat the best of
what we=ve got up here. If we can keep him in this fine form, we
look forward to being competitive against the internationals.@
Able Friend Not Disgraced in Return...
Making his first start in 49 weeks, Able Friend switched off at
the back of the pack and rallied in the stretch, but could not
finish off his race and settled for fourth in a performance widely
praised by jockey Tommy Berry and Moore.

AIt was a really good run and importantly he felt really good to
me in his action,@ Berry said. AI thought I was the winner but he
just blew out the last furlong. He=s right on track for wherever
he goes next.@
Added Moore: AHe was going to win at the 200m, but by the
time he got to the 150m he=d already had enough. Considering
the amount of time he=s had off, though, you have to accept
that and I=m sure he=ll be a much fitter horse come international
day.@
Moore suggested in the immediate aftermath of the race that
the Hong Kong Mile would be the likely next start for the former
Horse of the Year, but that a conversation with owner Dr. Cornel
Li was in the offing.

Australia for John Moore=s brother, Gary, Not Listenin=tome is
out of a stakes-winning mare who was runner-up in the G2
Sandown Guineas in 2006. Not Listenin=tome was an A$270,000
graduate of the 2012 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, while his dam
sold to Yu Long Investments for a sales-topping A$605,000 in
foal to Snitzel (Aus) from the Arrowfield Stud consignment at

PAKISTAN STAR, MR STUNNING UPSET AT
SHA TIN by Alan Carasso
Two of Hong Kong=s most progressive horses were each sent
off as odds-on favorites in Class 2 events late on the Sunday
program at Sha Tin, but
each tasted defeat for the
second time in their
respective careers.
>TDN Rising Star=
Pakistan Star (Ger)
(Shamardal) was the $15
(1-2) favourite in race
nine, a 1600-metre event,
and was once again off a
beat slowly before lagging
well behind the field and racing erratically at times down the
backstretch. Trailing the field as they entered the final 450
metres, Pakistan Star raced in traffic while making progress and
zeroed in on Simply Invincible (NZ) (Rios {NZ}) once into the
clear, but his rally fell a half-length shy (video).
Mr Stunning (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), three-for-four
during his first year at the track in 2015/2016, was favoured at
$18 (4-5) in his seasonal debut and appeared to hop at the
break, spotting his rivals some ground before mustering into
midfield during the middle portion of the race. In heavy traffic in
the stretch, he was bothered by a rival to his outside, finally
extricated himself and flew home to finish fourth, beaten about
a half-length (video).

Gray, winning this richest race on the domestic racing calendar
to add to the victory of Lim=s Cruiser (Aus) (Casino Prince {Aus})
in Friday=s EW Barker Trophy.
A two-time graduate of New Zealand Bloodstock sales, Bahana
entered the Gold Cup having won half of his 12 career
appearances and two straight, a BM89 over 2000m Oct. 9 ahead
of a battling success in the El Dorado Classic, the course-and-
distance prep, Oct. 30.
With Craig Williams flown in especially for the ride, Bahana
jumped well and chased outside of Time Odyssey crossing under
the wire with a lap to go, but sensing the lack of speed, Williams
allowed Bahana to roll forward and took over with a little more
than a mile to travel. From there, Bahana galloped along at a
leisurely pace, covering the opening six furlongs in a pedestrian
1:19.25 and setting up a sprint to the line. Cont. p11

KEENELAND NOVEMBERCONCLUDES
by Jessica Martini The Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale concluded its13-day run in Lexington Sunday with figures largely in line withits 12-day 2015 renewal and a continuation of the polarization inthe marketplace, with strong demand at the top level, but lesscompetition for lower-tiered horses. AI thought the sale went very well,@ Keeneland=s Director ofSales Geoffrey Russell commented at the close of businessSunday. AIt started off on a good note with the Book 1 horses--the top-quality horses received premium reward and thatcontinued on into the Conquest dispersal and a very stronghorses of racing age section in Book 4.@ In all, Keeneland sold 2,653 horses during the November salefor a gross of $215,213,000. The cumulative average of $81,121decreased 4.6% from last year=s $85,033, while the median fell16.67% to $25,000 from $30,000 in 2015. The buy-back rate was26.9%, up from 25.2% a year ago. A total of 19 offerings topped the million-dollar mark thisyear, led by 2010 GI Breeders= Cup Distaff winner UnrivaledBelle (Unbridled=s Song), who sold in foal to leading sire Tapit for$3.8 million to Mandy Pope=s Whisper Hill Farm. Keeneland November Sale Concludes (cont. from p1)
The sale of Uptown Twirl punctuated a strong horses of racing
age section in the auction=s Book 4, which also featured the
dispersal of Ernie Semersky and Dory Newell=s Conquest Stables.
The November sale included a diverse buying bench at the top
of the market, with the 19 seven-figure lots being purchased by
14 different buying groups and with representation from the
U.S., Australia, China, Dubai, Ireland and Japan.
AParticipation by a deep
buying bench comprising
domestic and international
interests was as strong as ever,
with enthusiastic duels from
multiple bidders who were
willing to stretch their budgets
for the premier horses,@
commented Keeneland Vice
President of Racing and Sales
Bob Elliston. AThe horses of
racing age portion of the sale
also created energy and
successfully attracted leading
trainers and end-users. The money is here, but you must have
something of value.@
The Conquest Stables dispersal saw 100 horses sell for
$11,207,500, led by Grade I winner My Conquestadory (Artie
Schiller), who sold in foal to Tapit for $1.5 million to SF
Bloodstock and Newgate Stud.
Lane=s End, which consigned the Conquest Stables dispersal,
ranked as the sale=s leading consignor, selling 265 horses for
$26,030,300. Whisper Hill Farm was the leading buyer by gross,
with four horses purchased for $7.2 million.
Buyers at the November sale remained selective and activity at
the top of the market didn=t translate into demand in the
auction=s later books. Cont. p4

M.V. Magnier (center)| Keeneland
ABuyers in November are aiming at a certain criteria and a
certain product,@ Russell said. AThey are looking for mares in foal
to Tapit and they are looking for graded stakes winners and
when they don=t get it, they just walk away, they don=t go down
to the next level.@
Two weanlings sold for seven figures early in the November
sale, with Coolmore=s M.V. Magnier signing the ticket at
$1.45 million for a son of War Front and Chris Baccari going to
$1.05 million for a colt by Tapit. Both were consigned by Hill >n=
Dale Sales Agency. But the foal market also showed signs of
polarization,
according to
Russell.
AI thought the foal
market was very
strong this year in
the early part,@
Russell said. AI think
there is a divide,
and we saw it in
September, there is
a divide in the marketplace. Those horses who meet the criteria
that everyone is looking for are well-received and bring
premiums and those that don=t, don=t.@
Russell admitted this was an industry-wide, international,
issue.
AThere is plenty of money for horses that meet the market, but
it=s a different story for horses that don=t meet the criteria set by
the market,@ Russell commented. ABuyers are sending a clear
message: they want quality. This is an industry issue worldwide,
not just in America. The number of annual sale days is ticking up
again. This is a troubling sign given buyers= selectivity. We as an
industry don=t want to forget the difficult lessons we learned
from a similar situation just a few years ago.@
Craig Bandoroff of Denali Stud, which sold the $1.05 million
Lassofthemohicans (Indian Charlie), acknowledged selling got
more difficult as the November sale marched through its second
week.
AWe had a very good sale in Books 1 and 2; quality sold well,@
Bandoroff said. AOnce you got to Book 4, to me it was like
somebody popped a balloon. I would say the market is a lot
thinner than you=d like it to be. It=s bad [for breeders] because
you=re not covering costs on horses. Unfortunately, there are
some stallion programs that are encouraging it. It=s keeping
horses in production that don=t need to be kept in production.@
Bandoroff continued, AOur business is good. I=m not a doom
and gloomer by any means. But there are definitely some signs
on the horizon that this [market] is not healthy all the way
through.@ Cont. p5

SILVER DUST (c, 2, Tapit--Filare l'Oro {SW & GSP, $185,100}, byHard Spun) backed up a sneaky good debut with an impressivemaiden score at Churchill. Off poorly in his career bow overtrack and trip Oct. 30, the $510,000 OBS March buy went widearound the turn, kicked into gear very late and finished well tobe fifth. Tracking along the inside from sixth as the 5-2 secondchoice here, the gray was held up in tight between rivals for themajority of the backstretch run. Patiently ridden while inchinginto contention around the turn, he tipped out four deep at thetop of the lane and kicked away strongly to score by threelengths. Dilettante (Unbridled=s Song) was second best.

Increased Handle at Laurel=s Fall Festival of Racing:
Laurel Park=s Fall Festival of Racing, an 11-race card held at the
Maryland track Saturday, saw a 19.6% increase in handle over
last year=s festival. Saturday=s card, which featured the first
graded running of the GIII De Francis Dash since 2009,
generated total handle of $4.513 million, compared to $3.775
million in 2015. The Maryland Jockey Club expects to take in
$425 million in total handle this year, an increase from $355
million in 2015 and $296 million in 2014.
AWe were pleased with Saturday=s handle, as well as the crowd
that came out to watch a great race card,@ said Sal Sinatra,
President and General Manager of the Maryland Jockey Club.
AWe want to thank everyone who came out and enjoyed our
renovated facility, those who bet the program on-line or at
simulcast facilities, and those who came out for the Brew &
Bourbon Festival. We also want to thank horsemen locally and
nationally who continue to support our program. We want to
continue to offer fans and horsemen these spectacular
programs and events. Fans like the renovations we=ve made and
horsemen love the new barns and improvements to the
backside. Our Sunday program continues to build as well with
dining options and Fantasy Football. We=re going to continue to
work hard because we believe there=s tremendous potential in
Maryland.@

Sent postward as the
