COMBINEDCOMMUNITIES’NEWS
Faith Matters www.faith-matters-gsm.com.au Over many years, October has been regarded as the month dedicated to the Rosary and this Monday, Oct. 7 is the feast of “Our Lady of the Rosary”. The Rosary was introduced by Pope Pius V in the 16th century. Originally there were 3 sets of mysteries, each set having 5 events of Jesus’ life which one could think about as the decade was said. A decade consisted of the Our Father, 10 Hail Marys and the Glory be to the Father. These sets are called Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries. However in 2002 Pope St. John Paul II introduced a fourth set of mysteries called the “The Mysteries of Light”. These are: 1) The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan 2) The Wedding Feast at Cana 3) Jesus Proclaiming the Kingdom of God, 4) The Transfiguration 5) The Institution of the Eucharist. The Rosary is a devotion to Mary that has stood the test of time and many families over the years have said it regularly. Perhaps this devotion could be part of your prayer life over this month of October. Plenary Council www.plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au In preparing for the Plenary Council we are now in the “Discernment” stage – a more deeply and reflective process in which we look more closely and prayerfully at the 6 themes which emerged from all our responses over the last year. More on this later. Note the emphasis on prayer – all of us are asked to pray often to the Spirit that the outcome of the Council will be a revitalised Australian Church which authentically reflects the collegiality, inclusiveness, openness and humility so powerfully modelled by
Jesus when he came to live among us.

Social Justice Group contribution 5 - 6 October 2019 Do you enjoy an evening out at the cinema, complete with movie snacks and a yarn afterwards about the film - the best bits, the funny bits, your favourite actors? Why not join the Social Justice Group in two weeks’ time at 6:30pm on Sunday evening 20 October after the 5:30 Mass for a great movie and meal deal? $5 contribution towards a light dinner before watching ‘Top End Wedding’ together. Top End Wedding is a feature film co-written by, produced and starring Darwin’s-own Miranda Tapsell as well as some iconic Top End destinations like Darwin, Tiwi Islands, Kakadu, Arnhem Land and Nitmiluk/Katherine Gorge and Katherine. The film tells the story of successful lawyer Lauren (played by Tapsell), and her fiancé Ned (played by Bohemian Rhapsody star Gwilym Lee). The couple has just ten days to find Lauren’s mother in the NT, reunite her parents and pull off their dream wedding. As this year’s Social Justice Statement from the Australian Bishops reminds us, we can keep it real in the digital age by enjoying the human and digital worlds at the same time. RSVP to [email protected] or the parish office.

FUEL FOR FARMERS INITIATIVE
Stanthorpe and the surrounding Granite Belt area has been hit hard with the drought and recent bush fires. The town of Stanthorpe is predicted to run out of water in less than 60 days. They have been so grateful for our prayers, but now a call has gone out for donations to purchase fuel cards to distribute to the desperate farmers struggling to keep their livestock and crops alive. If you wish to donate you can do so by going online to Stanthorpe Fuel and Services BSB 704 640 account 41543904 (please name your Parish with your donation). Stanthorpe Fuel and Services will then give the vouchers to the volunteers from the Granite Belt Drought Assist who know firsthand which families are desperate for help . Please help our farming neighbours from the Granite Belt and this worthy cause. Enquiries about the “Fuel for Farmers” can be directed to Leah Licence on 0488 077 636
ST WILLIAM’S LITURGY ROSTER

“For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7) Many of us compartmentalize our Faith, we bring it out only when we attend Mass or when we attend a parish event. Being a good steward requires discipline and striving to put God first in everything, all the time. The next time you are at a neighborhood party, at work or out shopping, would your actions signal to others that you are a good and faithful servant of our Lord?
When a woman decided to send the old family Bible to her brother in another state, the postal worker
asked her if there was anything breakable in the package. "Only the Ten Commandments," she replied.
VERSE FOR VINNIES
06 October 2019 1.30pm
St Mary MacKillop Centre 67 Dawson Parade Grovely
It's Jack Drake who'll you'll see If you come to Grovely For the next Verse for Vinnies' expo. And while Stanthorpe's his home Jack will constantly roam To where only the best poets go. Some who saw Jack before, All they wanted was more, Like his Cattle Dog's timely revenge On that Rottweiler mutt, Who was untimely cut When Jack's Woody dished out his revenge. Jack's a dinki-di bloke, Loves a rum and a coke. Writes of people and times that endears. So please come to the show, Where this Bush Poet Pro, Entertains you with laughter and tears. And the fifteen bucks fee, Goes to Vinnies you see, So you're helping the battlers again. Here's your chance to support Those who have next to naught. And who knows? You might even bring rain!
