Welcometothisveryimportantevening.Duringthefiveyearsyourchildiswithustherearetwokeymomentswhentheyareexpectedtomakeachoiceofsubjects-atage16andnowatYear8.Wewanttoprovideeachchildwithguidanceandadvicesothatthebestchoiceismadeandthepotentialofeverystudentisrealised.Ouraimisforeverybodytoleaveourschoolwiththegradestoentertopuniversitiesandleadsuccessfullives.

OurtrackrecordinexaminationsisimpressiveandourGCSEresultshavebeenoutstandingandplaceusamongstthetopperformingschoolslocally.Overthenextfewyearswehavesetambitioustargetsforourfutureresultsandconfidentlyexpectthemtogetevenbetter.OfcourseweknowwhatasignificantpartparentsplayinthesuccessoftheirchildandduringthiseveningwewillprovideyouwithalotofinformationaboutourGCSEcoursesandtheoptionsprocess.Examinationresultsareclearlyimportantbutpleasebeassuredthatwealsopushveryhardondevelopingthevaluesandpersonalskillstomakeourstudentsintogoodpeopleaswellasprovidingthequalificationstoenterthebestuniversitiesinthecountryandontoinfluentialcareers.

KeyStage3(Year7&8)atShevingtonHighSchoolformsabasicgeneralcourseforallpupils.InKeyStage4(Years9,10&11),toallowmoretimeforsubjectstobestudiedindepth,anelementofchoiceisintroduced.

ThisbookletcontainsdetailsofcoursesavailableinKeyStage4.Itisdesignedtohelppupilsandparentsunderstandtheimplicationsofoptionchoicesandtoassistpupils,inparticular,tomakewisechoices.

Allpupils’inKeyStage4willstudythecoresubjects.PupilswillbeaskedtochoosesubjectsfromtheOptionSubjectsprovidedwithinthisbooklet.

WhenmakingchoicesofsubjectsitisbeneficialtokeepCareersandFurtherEducationinmind.Itisthereforeimportantforthemajorityofpupilstoconcentrateonabalanced,generaleducation.

Itisalsoadvisabletoassesstheacademicstudyrequiredbydifferentsubjects,especiallyinrelationtoControlledAssessments.Ifyouhaveanyconcernsaboutyourchoicespleasespeaktoyourchild’sFormTutororHeadofYear.

TheHeadteacherreservestherighttowithdrawanyoftheoptionsandtoamendthepupils’choiceswhereitiseducationallydesirable.

Ithasalwaysbeenimportantforpupilstomakeinformedchoicesbasedontheirownstrengths,asoncechoiceshavebeenmade;thescopeforchangeislimited.Itisalsothecasethat,withregret,wemayhavetoaskpupilsoptingforlesspopularsubjectstomakealternativechoices.Forsubjectsthatareoversubscribedwewillendeavourtodiscussfurtheroptionswithindividualpupils.
