Dear student (and parents/guardians),

On the following pages you will find details of the work you have been set for the period of the school closure. At

the moment we cannot be sure how long this will be; suffice to say we have included plenty to keep you busy!

We have included work under the following headings: consolidation work, project work, something different and

online learning opportunities.

Consolidation work is the work you really must make sure you do. We will be asking you to submit it (either online

or when back in school). This work is to make sure you will not forget the things you have already learnt and to

ensure you stay in good learning habits. This material will not be covered again when we are back at school, so you

need to make sure you complete all tasks here. Design a timetable so that you can work on tasks in all subjects on a

regular basis.

Project work includes tasks that are more open-ended and require you to show initiative, use imagination and

research skills. Here you can use an element of choice. We are not saying you have to complete all projects in all

subjects but we would expect you to complete a good number of them. We think you will get a lot of enjoyment and

learning out of these projects if you put the effort in. Some of the teachers will be running competitions around

these projects so give it your best shot.

Something different is exactly what it says; look through the pack but you might make a film, write a diary, learn an

instrument, complete a fitness challenge – anything goes. No one would have chosen for you to be missing a large

number of weeks of your schooling, but we can take advantage of the time we have been given to learn in a whole

variety of ways – we have tried to give you a flavour of what you might do.

Online learning opportunities. It is fairly obvious what this is, but don't underestimate how wonderful some of the

online opportunities are – you could learn to code (make yourself highly employable), learn to animate (ditto), learn

to read music, visit the world’s best art galleries, watch some of the best documentaries ever made, watch some of

the best films ever made, listen to the best music ever made and write a review of any of them.

The key is to be motivated and organised. You are going to need a plan.

Here are a couple of ways you could organise your day, but do find what works for you:

0830 Rise and Shine – breakfast, stretch, dressed

0930 Subject 1 – good to choose something you find

challenging, or something you are not necessarily

looking forward to

1030 Subject 2

1130 Short break

1150 Subject 3 – choose a subject you enjoy, or from

the something different sections, or online

opportunities, or some project work

1300 Lunch

1400 Mr Briggs’ workout or other exercise

1500 Shower, then relax.

Try to avoid ‘screen time’ before 3pm unless it’s

definitely related to your studies

0830 Rise and Shine – breakfast, stretch

0900 Joe Wicks’ Workout or other exercise

0930 Shower, dressed

Look out for new challenges and updates as well as award winners on our daily learning update. Stay in touch with

your teachers via email and Twitter. Stay in touch with each other. And keep learning!

From all the staff at WSE who are already missing you so much!

Consolidation Work The Odyssey by Homer

The End of The Odyssey – Watch the series of videos which summarises the final few books of The Odyssey that we did not finish in school. Make Cornell notes or a story board (including key events and quotations) for each of the books from 18 to 24. https://youtu.be/Qt3mmBHxhw8

Key Character Profiles – for each of the key characters in The Odyssey complete the boxes on their profile sheet. You might find this website helpful as a reminder: https://www.softschools.com/literature/summary/the_odyssey/the_odyssey_important_characters/

Map Odysseus’ Journey – Odysseus took a long and complicated route around the Mediterranean Sea before reaching home! Plot the journey Odysseus made (including any detours or return visits to the same place) on a map of the Mediterranean. You could draw the map from scratch or download a blank map of the Mediterranean Sea onto which you can plot Odysseus’ journey (make sure it includes Greece, Italy and Turkey). The following presentation - https://prezi.com/cv28_jeloatb/the-odyssey-setting-map/ - includes information you can use to add more detail about each location, what happened to Odysseus in each place and how long he was there for. You could also add an image to represent each location.

The Odyssey Revision – use the link to revise and test your key knowledge about the text. https://quizlet.com/77652303/the-odyssey-review-flash-cards/

Key English Language and Literature Knowledge

Language Knowledge Organiser – Continue to self-quiz on your Language Knowledge Organiser. Make sure

you know the key terms e.g. the definition for a metaphor.

Narrative Poetry - Complete the attached booklet about narrative poetry (The Odyssey is an example of a narrative poem as it tells a story). Beowulf is another example of narrative poetry and one of the first in Old English. Watch the story of Beowulf here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJ_N3XH3ntI (make sure you watch every part of the story) and create a story board. What are the similarities and differences you can see between The Odyssey and Beowulf? You could then try planning and writing your own epic poem using some of the key features you have learnt about.

Spider diagram of ideas for your superhero

Create his/her name, back story and superhero powers

Draw your character with labels

Write a short description of your character include information on his/her superpowers and how they benefit society.

Create their arch nemesis – who is their greatest enemy? Why do they fight? Once you have a clear idea about what your superhero is like, plan and write a comic book featuring your characters. If you enjoy drawing you could do this by hand or use a website like StoryboardThat ( https://www.storyboardthat.com/storyboard-creator ) if you prefer to do it online.

Ancient Greek Food – Ever wondered what people ate in the past? The Odyssey is full of references of people gathering together to feast and celebrate. This website takes you through Ancient Greek recipes. What do you think the food would have tasted like? Could you make it? Experiment in the kitchen and send us pictures of your creations to the email address at the bottom of the page! https://www.thespruceeats.com/ancient-greek-food-recipes-4169393

The Olympics – Watch the video exploring the origins of the Olympic Games in Greece (hint they started almost 3000 years ago!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdHHus8IgYA. In the role of a sports journalist, write an article reporting on the earliest Olympic games. You could also design a home workout routine as if you were an athlete preparing for your first Olympics. Once you’ve planned your at home routine give it a go – can you get the whole family involved? Send us in pictures or videos of your attempting an Olympic workout to the email address at the bottom of the page!

Maths

‘Each one of you has a special gift from God. Use it serve others well.’

1 Peter 4:10

Consolidation Work Each Month we will upload a learning grid for a unit covered earlier in the year. The learning grid will have links to Corbett Maths worksheets/Videos/Answers and details of the Hegarty Maths Video/Quiz. Corbett Maths allows for students to practice at a pace and level that it appropriate for them. The questions allow for lots of practice as well as extension and application. They can choose to answer all the questions on the sheet, or just a selection. Using Corbett Maths Worksheets

At the top of a Corbett Maths sheet is a link to a tutorial video (recommended).

At the bottom is a link to the answers (tick/cross symbol) to allow students to self-mark.

Students can choose to read the questions on screen or can print them out.

They are expected to self-mark. Hegarty Maths provides a detailed video tutorial on the skill and questions to assess how well the student has progressed. If a student gets stuck on a question then the clicking the “Get help” button will play the tutorial video from the appropriate place. It is recommended that students watch the video, make notes and then try the quiz. The quiz is self-marking and students can repeat the quiz as often as they wish. Please note that we will not be linking the quizzes to your child’s account. In order to access the correct work they have to type the clip number in the search bar at the top of the hegarty screen. See below for how to use Hegarty Maths. We will be monitoring usage on Hegarty and will be running competitions to see who in each year group completes the most questions correctly or has watched the most videos. Students must be in it to win it!

Project Work Each month a new project will be issued. These projects will be cross-curricular where possible so that students can see the links between Maths and other subjects. Ideas for project extension will be given but students can choose to extend the projects as they wish – let them use their imagination! Y8 Project for April – Planning a Meal

Something Different… Students will be encouraged to try different things that require the use of Mathematics. This could be playing mathematical or strategic board games, card games, reviewing recipes, watching a maths related video, Maths puzzles and challenges. Follow the Maths department on Twitter for more puzzles, challenges and interesting Maths facts @WyvStEdsMaths

Personal Development

Each one of you has a special gift from God. Use it serve others well’.

1 Peter 4:10

Consolidation Work Use the personal development profiles on SMHW to remind yourself of the targets you set yourself for this term. Although you aren’t in school there are lots of elements which will be useful to you in organising your home learning. Remember that the profile is designed to help you prepare yourself to be successful both in school and beyond into the world of work so it is important to recognise areas you can improve on and to keep working on them at home. Please complete the Google Form on Show My Homework so that we can see which areas you feel you have developed and how. This would be helpful to give your fellow students ideas about how to improve their own target areas.

Project Work On Show My Homework there is a personal development challenge grid for you complete. There are a lot of activities for you to do which are designed to be fun, practical and also helpful to others. Spanish

‘Each one of you has a special gift from God. Use it to serve others well.’

1 Peter 4:10

Consolidation Work

Use the Vocab Sheets (on SMHW) for VIVA 2 Modules 1-3 to create a Knowledge Organiser for each topic. (Key Vocabulary and Grammar should be included). These Knowledge Organisers will be essential revision tools for you so make sure that you have planned what you need to include and presented them as clearly as possible. Once complete, use them to self-quiz.

We recommend that you spend 10 mins per day (if you can) practising your vocabulary and grammar using Language Gym (see details below) or Memrise

Project Work Prepare a project about Spanish Films & TV (remember that Spanish is not just spoken in Spain!) Your project should show evidence of good research. You could find out about:

well-known Spanish films / TV programmes

famous Spanish actors / directors

los Premios Goya (the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars) You can present your work in any format –a poster, an information board, a scrapbook, a PPT or even a vlog! Whilst most of the project will be in English, you could try to think of ways to include some of the Spanish that you know too. (N.B. DO NOT include passages of text from Google Translate!) A good example might be if you could find a photo of a famous Spanish film actor, and…

use Spanish vocabulary to label parts of the body / what clothes they are wearing etc

write some short Spanish sentences in speech bubbles giving a personal description, e.g. Me llamo… (I am called…) Soy … ( I’m…. + nationality / personality / size) Tengo … ( I have … + years old / eyes + hair / family + pets ) Vivo en… (I live in … ) Mi cumpleaños es el… (My birthday is the…)

BE CREATIVE … Think about how you can create a diary of their typical daily routine, describe their favourite foods, their last exotic holiday or an MTV Cribs-style description of their fantastic home by the sea ….

Of course, part of the project should include watching some Spanish movies & TV programmes! You could try the following … Netflix: Have a look at some of our Netflix suggestions on SMHW

YouTube: Watch episodes of EXTR@ (A cheesy version of Friends for Spanish learners!) (Each episode is approx. 20 minutes with English subtitles / Spanish subtitles )

Something Different… Cook a traditional Spanish/Latin American dish at home. Take a photo of what you have made and send it to us! Search up LanguageQuesters on YouTube for a selection of short Spanish stories with dual Spanish/English subtitles. (approx. 10 min each) Listen to Spanish music on YouTube (with English/Spanish subtitles) or try to fill in the gaps in some of your favourite Spanish songs on Lyrics Training (make sure you click Spanish – no need to create an account). Watch this Goya award-winning ‘cortometraje’ - a short animated film in Spanish (with English/Spanish subtitles) about a special friendship (approx. 10 mins) Try to work your way through the challenges on ‘The Great Spanish Language Challenge’ https://www.britishcouncil.org/sites/default/files/the_great_spanish_language_challenge.pdf A copy is also available to download from SMHW.
