Dear student (and parents/guardians),

On the following pages you will find details of the work you have been set for the period of the school closure. At

the moment we cannot be sure how long this will be; suffice to say we have included plenty to keep you busy!

We have included work under the following headings: consolidation work, project work, something different and

online learning opportunities.

Consolidation work is the work you really must make sure you do. We will be asking you to submit it (either online

or when back in school). This work is to make sure you will not forget the things you have already learnt and to

ensure you stay in good learning habits. This material will not be covered again when we are back at school, so you

need to make sure you complete all tasks here. Design a timetable so that you can work on tasks in all subjects on a

regular basis.

Project work includes tasks that are more open-ended and require you to show initiative, use imagination and

research skills. Here you can use an element of choice. We are not saying you have to complete all projects in all

subjects but we would expect you to complete a good number of them. We think you will get a lot of enjoyment and

learning out of these projects if you put the effort in. Some of the teachers will be running competitions around

these projects so give it your best shot.

Something different is exactly what it says; look through the pack but you might make a film, write a diary, learn an

instrument, complete a fitness challenge – anything goes. No one would have chosen for you to be missing a large

number of weeks of your schooling, but we can take advantage of the time we have been given to learn in a whole

variety of ways – we have tried to give you a flavour of what you might do.

Online learning opportunities. It is fairly obvious what this is, but don't underestimate how wonderful some of the

online opportunities are – you could learn to code (make yourself highly employable), learn to animate (ditto), learn

to read music, visit the world’s best art galleries, watch some of the best documentaries ever made, watch some of

the best films ever made, listen to the best music ever made and write a review of any of them.

The key is to be motivated and organised. You are going to need a plan.

Here are a couple of ways you could organise your day, but do find what works for you:

0830 Rise and Shine – breakfast, stretch, dressed

0930 Subject 1 – good to choose something you find

challenging, or something you are not necessarily

looking forward to

1030 Subject 2

1130 Short break

1150 Subject 3 – choose a subject you enjoy, or from

the something different sections, or online

opportunities, or some project work

1300 Lunch

1400 Mr Briggs’ workout or other exercise

1500 Shower, then relax.

Try to avoid ‘screen time’ before 3pm unless it’s

definitely related to your studies

0830 Rise and Shine – breakfast, stretch

0900 Joe Wicks’ Workout or other exercise

0930 Shower, dressed

1000 Subject 1 – good to choose something you find

challenging, or something you are not necessarily

looking forward to

1100 Subject 2

1200 Lunch

1300 Subject 3 – choose a subject you enjoy, or from

the something different sections, or online

opportunities, or some project work

1500 Relax.

Try to avoid ‘screen time’ before 3pm unless it’s

Look out for new challenges and updates as well as award winners on our daily learning update. Stay in touch with

your teachers via email and Twitter. Stay in touch with each other. And keep learning!

From all the staff at WSE who are already missing you so much!

Art and Design

‘Each one of you has a special gift from God. Use it serve others

well’ 1 Peter 4:10

Consolidation Work (Sheet 1) Continue to develop your new project ‘Human Condition’.

- Use your phone/camera to take a collection of photos linking to your chosen theme within the project. If you can, print and present across a double page in your sketchbook.

- Start to create drawings/experiments from your photographs. Experiment with a range of media, remember to include skills learned such as adding tone, texture and details within your drawings.

- Artist research and analysis: research at least 2 artists that both inspire you and link to your project theme. Experiment working in their style, this could be drawing/creating artwork from one of your photos in the style of the artist or simply creating a series of experiments/trials using different media to recreate the artists’ style of working.

- Initial ideas: start planning ideas for a final outcome. Trial and experiment at least 3 possible ideas. Experiment with composition and colour ways for each idea.

- ANNOTATION: Remember to annotate your work as you go – What went well and why? What hasn’t worked? How will you develop and experiment to overcome hurdles? How does your own work link to artists looked at throughout your project?

-

Mini project for fun (Sheet 2) Alongside your assigned day to day work, take some time out to relax and create artwork for fun that you can share with others during this time. Some ideas of mini projects you could do:

Create a visual diary that records your experience of the current world-wide situation. This could be through photography, drawing, painting, digital art, 3D… it’s completely up to you!

30 day drawing/photography challenge – create a small drawing or take a photograph every day for 30 days! Present this how you like and share to our new school Instagram or email to your teacher.

Listen to a piece of music and draw how it makes you feel, this could be presented in a variety of ways.

Go for a walk (following government guidelines) and take a series of photographs. The above are just a few ideas but feel free to make up your own!

Relax, have fun and make sure you share your awesome artwork with us!

Something Different… (Sheet 2) At least once a week try out a different media or a new style of working, break out of your comfort zone. Lacking inspiration? Watch a creative film from the WSE Artflix list – see below

others well’ 1 Peter 4:10 Consolidation Work Knowledge organisers are attached to SMHW based on the exam theory. Use ‘read, cover, write, check’ to learn the content. Then answer the past paper questions on the next slide. Project Work You are being asked to stay at home for an extended period of time. During this time you have the opportunity to develop your cooking skills and work on creating exciting recipes from what is available in your fridge, freezer and cupboard. You need to create a two course menu (starter and main course, or main course and dessert). The dishes you create should showcase your creativity, you need to analyse the nutrition in your dishes to discuss if they meet healthy eating guidelines for teenagers. The PPT with all the tasks is attached to SMHW. Follow the instructions on the different slides. Remember to document all of your work, collate it together and bring into school with you when we are back. Complete the tasks when you can.

‘Each one of you has a special gift from God. Use it serve others well’.

1 Peter 4:10

Consolidation Work

Look at https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2001/mar/14/past.education and see how the article helps you to understand the period of history in which Priestley was writing. Write a summary or notes about the article and how it might relate to An Inspector Calls.

Consolidate your knowledge of An Inspector Calls by working through the attached booklet. Fill in key quotes, draw pictures of the characters and add the quotes which show why you have chosen to depict them in the way you have. Here is a link that will help you with some key quotes for the characters and get you started. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKrUkCuSisU . You will notice that there are several different videos that cover each character.

Write a summary/create a storyboard of the play. Here are two different links you can use to do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuHvGPpq8TM (film version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCUicpoLa3o (radio version).

Create a poster or Cornell notes for An Inspector Calls context https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fXw8lWWtlA

Do you think Mr Birling was justified in ending Eva Smith’s employment? Do you feel that Gerald’s relationship with Eva Smith was a positive one or a negative one? Do you think any particular character is responsible for Eva Smith’s death?

Write a separate article for each of these questions to argue your thoughts (Paper 1, Q5 practise). Remember to check back at your language booklet 2 to remind yourself how you should layout an article and the different persuasive techniques you need to include. You will have gone over this in last week’s work too.

Go on to BBC Bitesize to look at themes etc. for An Inspector Calls and have a go at dual coding (guide here: https://www.learningscientists.org/blog/2016/9/1-1). There are also mini tests you can have a go at to consolidate your understanding https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zsvgcdm/revision/1

Use the website ‘Quizlet’ to consolidate and extend your knowledge of Language Devices & Word Classes.

Poetic Methods Knowledge Organiser – Self-quiz on the poetic methods knowledge organiser. This will be really useful knowledge for when we come to study poems in year 11. If you wanted to challenge yourself, see if you can identify these devices used in some poems: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/

Ambitious Vocabulary – We want you to keep learning and using your ambitious vocabulary! Your ambitious vocabulary list will be on ShowMyHomework.

Project Work

Research the conventions of play writing. Try to write your own play. You could use An Inspector Calls as your inspiration or research another period in history and base it around that. Search for more information about other time periods or see if you can find documentaries online to inspire you.

Research gothic writer Robert Louis Stevenson. We will be reading one of his greatest novellas ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ in Year 11. Here are a couple of places to start you off https://www.biography.com/writer/robert-louis-stevenson

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=WHO+IS+robert+louis+stevenson. You can present your information in many different ways e.g. booklet, dual coding, poster or Cornell notes.

Research for Shakespearean tragedies. A good place to start - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9m5I-

HO3w8w . Why are they so popular? Where did Shakespeare get his inspiration from? What common

themes/ideas can you find? Again present your information however you would like.

Want to get a headstart on a key Year 11 text? Read Jekyll and Hyde. The text is available here:

https://www.gutenberg.org/files/43/43-h/43-h.htm And you can use this site to help you if you’re struggling to

understand what’s going on or want to find out more: https://www.litcharts.com/lit/dr-jekyll-and-mr-hyde

Watch out for the English Learning Update (out on a Thursday) after Easter when we hope to have recorded Ms

Foyle reading it for you!

Something Different…

Audio books – classic gothic stories – Here are some suggestions, but there are hundreds of wonderful short stories and longer works out there. https://stories.audible.com/pdp/1094094463?ref=adbl_ent_anon_ds_pdp_pc_pg-1-cntr-0-24

Have a go at planning and writing your own gothic novel remembering to think about how you structure your story (Paper 1, Q3). Look back at your language booklet one to remind yourself of the structural techniques a writer uses for effect, try to include them in your writing.

Monthly Writing Competitions – more details will follow in the daily bulletins.

Timeline of literature – pinpoint key moments in history and the literary periods, and find 2/3 texts which link to each of these and present on a document/video/Prezzi. Most inventive way of presenting wins a secret prize! Here is a good starting point - https://www.bl.uk/discovering-literature# . How many of these key texts can you read before school begins? The English department will be giving prizes for the highest score!

Do you think that a book should be banned purely because people don’t believe in the ideas presented within it? Research banned books and the controversy around censorship in literature. Focus on one or two – should these have been banned or not? Keep a list of the articles you read and what research you complete. Present your findings as an article, blog post, mini news report etc.

Health & Social Care

‘Each one of you has a special gift from God. Use it serve others well’

Consolidation Work Read the two case studies and answer the questions in as much detail as possible. The negative impact of aggression Tony is 90 years old and has experienced a recent deterioration in his mobility. This has meant that Tony finds it difficult to mobilise (or move) in his flat on his own and is supported to do so by his sister, Molly who lives with him, and his son, Kevin, who supports him with his personal care tasks every morning and evening. Molly has arranged for a family meeting to discuss Tony’s current and future care needs. Kevin does not believe that there is a need for his two other brothers to be involved in his father’s care as they both live over 200 miles away and show no interest in their father. On the morning of the family meeting Kevin telephones Molly and starts shouting and making threats about the arrangements for the family meeting. Molly gets very upset at her nephews aggression and explains to Tony that she feels very anxious and unsure whether she can manage looking after him. Tony feels overwhelmed by this news and is worried that he may no longer be able to continue living in his flat. What were the effects of Kevin’s aggressive communications? Who has it affected and how? What are the short term effects and what could the long term effects be? How could Kevin have communicated more positively? Choosing a carer Ingrid has lived in the same village in England for over 40 years. She knows everyone in the local community and makes time to get to know every person who lives there and their family. Ingrid has a neighbour called Eric, whose long term partner has recently died. Eric’s partner used to manage the day-to-day running of their house and Eric is finding it difficult to manage in the house on his own. Due to difficulties with his mobility he finds it difficult to use the stairs as well as complete practical tasks such as changing the bed linen, vacuuming and putting the rubbish bins out. Eric has decided that he wants to employ a carer, and has asked Ingrid to help him with employing the right carer. Eric explains to Ingrid that he has a local care organisation and is due to meet with two potential carers for the first time on Friday. He would like Ingrid to be present when he does so. Ingrid is very happy to help and agrees to support him. Upon arriving at Eric’s house, Eric asks each carer to introduce themselves and tell him why they are the right person for the job. Read through both carers’ introductions and then answer the questions that follow. Carer 1 Good morning, I’m Mrs French and I think I’m the right person for the job because I have had many, many years of caring experience and I know what’s best when it comes to care. In terms of why I am the right person for the job, this is because I am a very hard worker and you can be sure that you can always rely on me to get the job done. Carer 2 Hello Eric, I’m Katy and I am very pleased to meet with you both today. I live very local to you and I think I may have even seen you a few times in the local shops. Thank you for giving me this opportunity for an interview for a job that I really enjoy. What I like most about being a carer is all the different people I meet and get to know. I am a very patient person and I think it is very important to always show respect and understanding. I enjoy supporting individuals to live their lives how they want to. Questions

1. Based on these introductions, which carer do you think Eric should employ?

2. Explain the reasons for your choice of carer.

3. How did each carer’s introduction make you feel when you read it through for the first time?

Consolidation Work Active Revision Using your own notes and the knowledge organisers on SHMW, have a go at some active revision. There is a PowerPoint with instructions on one way you could do this on SMHW. Quizlet Sign up for a free account and have a go at creating online flashcards to help you revise the topics that you have studied this year. You can also have a look at flashcards other people have created to help you. Make use of the knowledge organisers on SMHW as well as your class notes in your books.

Project Work Medicine Revision There are a number of different activities and resources on SMHW to help you revisit and consolidate your learning about Medicine. One example of something you could do is to use your notes and some of the materials on SHMW to create a big timeline of the Medicine topic. You could organise this by time period (Medieval, Renaissance, Industrial, Modern) or by theme (Causes of Disease, Treatments, Prevention etc). This will help consolidate what you have learned so far. Early Elizabethan England As this is the topic which we were working on before the school closure, it makes sense for you to continue your learning at home as best you can. With that in mind, use the variety of materials on SMHW to continue working through this topic. There are a couple of work books on there which you can use, as well as a variety of other materials. Have a look and choose something that works for you. A really good place to start would be to complete the Elizbeth Booklet which is on there as a publisher file and a pdf.

Something Different… Diary task We are living through a unique period in modern history. Never before has an interconnected global community had to isolate itself like this. People will be asking about what happened at this time for generations to come. So that your thoughts, experiences and feelings do not get lost, why not set yourself the task of creating a diary until we see each other again. Spend a few minutes each day reflecting on what you have done, and record it in a diary. You could include details on what you have done, and your thoughts or observations of how this has changed your everyday life. Maths

‘Each one of you has a special gift from God. Use it serve others well.’

1 Peter 4:10

Consolidation Work Each Month we will upload learning grids for units covered earlier this year and in Year 9. The learning grids will have links to Corbett Maths worksheets/Videos/Answers and details of the Hegarty Maths Video/Quiz. Some classes will have either Higher or foundation tier learning grids, and a few will have both as they are “crossover” classes and they will be expected to choose the work appropriate for them. If your child is unsure as to which is more appropriate for them then they should contacted their class teacher in the first instance. Corbett Maths allows for students to practice at a pace and level that it appropriate for them. The questions allow for lots of practice as well as extension and application. They can choose to answer all the questions on the sheet, or just a selection. Using Corbett Maths Worksheets

At the top of a Corbett Maths sheet is a link to a tutorial video (recommended).

At the bottom is a link to the answers (tick/cross symbol) to allow students to self-mark.

Students can choose to read the questions on screen or can print them out.

They are expected to self-mark. Hegarty Maths provides a detailed video tutorial on the skill and questions to assess how well the student has progressed. If a student gets stuck on a question then the clicking the “Get help” button will play the tutorial video from the appropriate place. It is recommended that students watch the video, make notes and then try the quiz. The quiz is self-marking and students can repeat the quiz as often as they wish. Please note that we will not be linking the quizzes to your child’s account. In order to access the correct work they have to type the clip number in the search bar at the top of the hegarty screen. See below for how to use Hegarty Maths. We will be monitoring usage on Hegarty and will be running competitions to see who in each year group completes the most questions correctly or has watched the most videos. Students must be in it to win it!

Project Work Each month a new project will be issued. These projects will be cross-curricular where possible so that students can see the links between Maths and other subjects. Ideas for project extension will be given but students can choose to extend the projects as they wish – let them use their imagination! Y10 Project for April – Thinking Mathematically – a collection of Mathematical problems

Music

‘Each one of you has a special gift from God. Use it serve others well’.

1 Peter 4:10

Consolidation Work Short listening tasks will be added every week to SMHW. They will include a set of questions and an extract of music for you to listen too. Try to keep these in a folder together.

Project Work Haydn Project – Research project and analysis. This will be set through SMHW. It will include listening and following/annotating the score. Composition Project – Some of you can work on your Year 10 composition at home. If you have nearly finished the year 10 composition and it is saved in school think about starting a new one. In Year 11 you will need to write another completely new composition. Start thinking of ideas now. Spend some time with your instrument and improvise until you come up with a melody or chord pattern that you like. Performance Project – Remember playing your instrument or singing will make up 30% of your GCSE. Now is the time to practice really hard and improve your skills. Try and set aside a small bit of time every day and work through you pieces your teacher has set for you. Also find some really fun pieces online and learn them. This will keep you focused and improve your skills at the same time.

Something Different… Try making your own music. Many of you have instruments at home and can practice and set yourselves challenges. Others may be able to use online music making software for example Garage Band (free on ipads or imacs) or musescore - https://musescore.org/en Or you could try your hand at songwriting - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z3dqhyc/articles/zrx3vk7

Other things you can do to consolidate your knowledge for the exam:

Create mind maps of topics covered and learn the acronyms

Create flash cards

Past papers (Click the OCR link above and these will be added to SMHW).

Unit RO53 Leadership in Sport This unit is about leadership and most Cambridge National classes have planned, led and evaluated a sports festival. Your teachers have set specific class work on SMHW because each group may be at different points in this unit. However, all classes should be completing or have almost completed learning outcome 1, which is the roles and responsibilities of a leader task. A task sheet has been uploaded by your teachers to SMHW. You need to complete all the tasks. Deadline has been set by your specific teacher and once you have completed you must email your work to your specific teacher or upload to SMHW.

Project Work The next topic is RO56 Outdoor Pursuit. Miss Adkins will put Flipped Learning on SMHW with the relevant task sheets for this unit. You are expected to complete all the notes and the coursework so that we can do consolidation work when we return on this particular unit. The coursework is very similar to the work you have recently completed for leadership in sport but the focus is on outdoor activities rather than types of leaders.

Personal Development

Each one of you has a special gift from God. Use it serve others well’.

1 Peter 4:10

Consolidation Work Use the personal development profiles on SMHW to remind yourself of the targets you set yourself for this term. Although you aren’t in school there are lots of elements which will be useful to you in organising your home learning. Remember that the profile is designed to help you prepare yourself to be successful both in school and beyond into the world of work so it is important to recognise areas you can improve on and to keep working on them at home. Please complete the Google Form on Show My Homework so that we can see which areas you feel you have developed and how. This would be helpful to give your fellow students ideas about how to improve their own target areas.

Project Work On Show My Homework there is a personal development challenge grid for you complete. There are a lot of activities for you to do which are designed to be fun, practical and also helpful to others. Try to see how many challenges on the grid you can complete before the summer holidays and cross them off. The 35 challenges include keepy uppies, Tik Tok dances, gardening, cooking, planning for your future career path and lots more! Photos, videos and other updates will be welcome, please send them to the email address below so that we can see what you achieve!

Something Different… Try to use the time away from school to find a new passion or learn a new skill. The internet is awash with inspirational stories, ‘how to videos’ and stories of people working together to help others. If you are inspired by any of these or by any of your completed challenges, try to find out more about how to pursue a passion or develop a skill. This is the perfect chance to show that you are curious and interested!

Online Learning Opportunities BBC Bitesize has a wide range of subjects to help support your personal development, particularly in the PSHE and Citizenship resource area. From April they will be updating content on a daily basis so why not log in and have a look? YouTube has countless videos for you to watch to learn how to do things. Use them wisely!

1 Peter 4:10

Consolidation Work Continue to use your revision guide and create your own crossword / word search for each topic’s key words. Complete the questions at the end of each unit that you have studied so far. Watch the clips from ‘Free Science Lessons’ on you tube that cover the units you have studied so far. ‘Primrose Kitten’ is also a great resource to review where you are up to.

Project Work Visit the new scientist, BBC science, environment or technology websites and choose a topic to research. Create a review, poster or filmed report of what you find out. Create a map of trees in your local area. Identify them and find out what animals rely on them for food, habitats etc. Make honeycomb – create a poster that explain the science behind this.

Spanish

‘Each one of you has a special gift from God. Use it to serve others well.’

1 Peter 4:10

Consolidation Work

Work through your KS4 Independence Booklet, looking up/ asking about anything you are unsure of. If you would like to purchase a workbook for extra grammar learning and GCSE practice, we recommend Viva! AQA GCSE Spanish Grammar & Translation Workbook (ISBN 9781292133195) (approx. £6)

Use the Vocab sheets for VIVA GCSE Modules 1-5 to create a Knowledge Organiser for each topic (Key Vocabulary and Grammar should be included). These Knowledge Organisers will be essential revision tools for you at GCSE so make sure that you have planned what you need to include and presented them as clearly as possible. Once complete, use them to self-quiz.

We recommend that you spend at least 10 mins per day (if you can) practising your vocabulary and grammar using Language Gym or Memrise (see details below)

Project Work You are going to complete a research project on Spanish Festivals. There are plenty to choose from, some religious, some cultural and some just totally bizarre! This can be completed in any format you like (or a mixture) – information board, scrapbook, Powerpoint /Vimeo, you could create quizzes, compare festivals with a mini-vlog … Be creative!

La Tomatina Las Fallas La Semana Santa Día de los Muertos San Fermin (Running of the Bulls) Feria de Abril de Sevilla Día de los Reyes Magos La Mercè Els Enfarinats El Colacho

Which of these festivals really capture your interest? Find out where they are celebrated on a map. Do more detailed research by watching any video clips or reading Spanish or English websites you can find about the history and the cultural events that take place during the festival. Whilst your project may be done in English – N.B. we absolutely DO NOT want you to use Google Translate to write lots of text that you do not know how to say in Spanish – you should think about how to use some of the Spanish that you know. Here are just a few examples:

Find a picture of the festival and label what is going on in the photo in 4-5 simple Spanish sentences, perhaps you could say what people are wearing or doing in the photo and what you think about it. (e.g. En la foto hay mucha gente. La gente está bailando en la calle. También las mujeres están llevando vestidos coloridos y bonitos. Creo que es el Carnival en Cádiz. Me parece muy emocionante.) Imagine you have just been to the festival and write a postcard to tell a friend about it. This will help you to recap when to use preterite and imperfect tenses! e.g. Fui a Sevilla con mi familia el abril pasado. Lo mejor fue cuando visité un festival en la región, que se llamaba la Feria de Sevilla. Había tanta diversión y me gustó el baile flamenco. Fue guay! ) Plan a visitor brochure to attract tourists to the festival – simple recommendations of where to stay (se debería + infinitive = ‘you should…’), what typical dishes to eat, what else could there is to do in the area.

Something Different… Cook some of the traditional food associated with these Spanish and Latin-American Festivals at home. Take photos of what you have made and send them in to us! Search up LanguageQuesters on YouTube for a selection of short Spanish stories with dual Spanish/English subtitles. (approx. 10 min each) Listen to Spanish music on YouTube (with English/Spanish subtitles) or try to fill in the gaps in some of your favourite Spanish songs on Lyrics Training (make sure you click Spanish– no need to create an account). Watch this Goya award-winning ‘cortometraje’ - a short animated film in Spanish (with English/Spanish subtitles) (approx. 10 mins) Do you want to find out more about Spanish football? Follow this up by watching Boca Juniors Confidencial, a documentary about the famous Argentinian football club, on Netflix. Alternatively, you can read Marca (the highest selling daily newspaper in Spain dedicated entirely to ‘el deporte rey’ or the beautiful game!) Try to work your way through the challenges on ‘The Great Spanish Language Challenge’ https://www.britishcouncil.org/sites/default/files/the_great_spanish_language_challenge.pdf A copy is also available to download from SMHW.
