Welcome
Good morning,
I would like to welcome you to your virtual transition day. Unfortunately, due to current circumstances
we cannot meet you in person, however we will endeavour to do so at the earliest opportunity. I
would like to take this moment to reassure you that we are working very hard to ensure that your
start to your secondary school adventure is as smooth and exciting as possible. We have provided
a variety of live and pre-recorded sessions for you to engage with from home. We will bring the
school to your home and hopefully provide you with an insight into what lessons will be like when
we welcome you through our doors.
The timetable is our recommended format to follow for the day but you do not need to follow this
exactly.
In this booklet you will find a number of useful resources and activities that will help guide you
through the day. You will also receive a booklet of subject specific activities for you to complete over
the summer.
I hope you enjoy your virtual transition day and hopefully we will meet in person very soon.

To get the fraction in its simplest form we divide both the numerator and denominator by their highest
common factor (HCF). We must make sure there are no other common factors between our numerator

The skeletal system TASK With another member of your household, label the bones with pieces of paper and selotape. Extension: Without looking at the diagram on the left, can how many bones can you recall?
Warm up There are three stages to a warm up. 1 – Pulse raiser (this increased the number of times your heart beats per minute). 2. Dynamic stretches (these are stretches that are completed whilst moving e.g. lunges. This helps to prevent ‘pulling a muscle’. 3. A sport/skill related activity. This should be linked to the main session e.g. in football, this could be completing passes with a partner.
TASK Complete a pulse raiser and measure your heart rate. Your pulse raiser could be high knees on the spot for 90 seconds. Extension: Complete some dynamic stretches from the list below- Lunges Squats Heel flicks Side steps
Movement at a joint Flexion – bending a joint. This occurs when the angle of a joint decreases. For example, the elbow flexes when performing a biceps curl. The knee flexes in preparation for kicking a ball. Extension – straightening a joint. This occurs when the angle of a joint increases, for example the elbow when throwing a shot put. The take-off knee extends when a high-jumper takes off (the other knee is flexed).
TASK Thinking about the elbow and knee, list sporting actions when flexion and extension would occur.

Research what is meant by the term ‘hyperextension’.

A map is a representation of the Earth's surface in a particular place. It shows how things are linked to each other by distance, direction and size. Maps are a way of showing many things
